leave them fearful and withdrawn. Their speech and behavior can be so disorganized
that they may be incomprehensible or frightening to others.
Schizophrenia often interferes with a person's ability to think clearly, to
distinguish reality from fantasy, to manage emotions, make decisions, and relate to
others. Most people with schizophrenia contend with the illness chronically or
episodically throughout their lives, and are often stigmatized by lack of public
understanding about the disease. Schizophrenia is not caused by bad parenting or
personal weakness. A person with schizophrenia does not have a "split personality,"
they are not dangerous or violent.
2.5.1. Symptoms
The signs and symptoms vary from individual to individual, but all
people with the disorder show one or more of the following symptoms:
Delusions: these are false beliefs that a person holds on to, despite the
fact that there is strong evidence that the beliefs are wrong. People with
delusions often believe that a person or group of people is watching them
and wants to hurt them, believing other people can read their minds, or
beliefs that they have special powers or abilities.
Hallucinations: many people with schizophrenia experience auditory
hallucinations (hearing voices or noises that are not real). Sometimes people
with auditory hallucinations hear voices that insult them or tell them what to
do. Others might hear voices arguing with each other or might hear their
