The Junior Leigh, Agnes-William de Venables, line has been corrected as of 10/7/07. I was informed of an error by Dale
Scott on October 3. I had followed Stirnet too closely and not included data available in The Visitation of Cheshire in 1580.
Piers Leigh of Hanley, the man beheaded by Henry IV in 1399, is the ancestor of the Leighs of Stoneleigh but not by his
wife Margaret Danyers. Instead, they are descended from Piers' marriage to Cicely Hagh. This correction is now incorporated
in the Junior Leigh line.
The illustration on the title page is of the Arms of Baron Leigh of Stoneleigh.
Contained in this genealogy report are the family lines of the Leghs of Lyme Park and also of the Middleton Leighs. The line
of Baron Newton of Lyme Park is also given separately.

the Leighs spelled it Legh. At least they did at the time the branch poduced Baron Newton (1892). I have changed many
Peter's in the Stirnet line to Piers to conform to the terminology in the Cheshire Visitation of 1580. A descendant's husband
says he died in 1422.

This marriage is an interlock with the Spencer line whose later interlocks produced an intermarriage with John Churchill's
daughter, Anne. John Churchill was the first Duke of Marlborough whose campaigns defeated Louis XIV during the reign
of Queen Anne. This Churchill Spencer line produced Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill.
The Spencer family also produced Diana, Princess of Wales, the mother of a presumed future King of England.

of Leicester (Elizabeth I). After his father's death Dudley tried to make himself Earl of Leicester and
Earl of Warwick. This failed and he left his wife and ran off to Italy with a maid of honor to the
Queen, Elizabeth Southwell.

Elizabeth Stanley was born in Ewloe Castle, Hawarden, Flintshire Wales. She was maid of honor to Elizabeth I. It is not yet
clear who her father was but he was of the Derby Stanleys. I think the Elizabeth, daughter of the 3rd Earl, married a Baron
so it is not her.
This wife is marked "repudiata" which probably means divorced or annulled.

Marriage to Margery Cartwright is listed as occurring in 1601 in Pavers. It is also noted that Ferdinando's father, Thomas L.
is deceased at the time of the marriage. Marriage to Mary Pilkington is taken from Pavers marriages for year 1609 in
Yorkshire on Genuki. Marriages for Yorkshire. There is a burial of Ferdinando's previous wife listed as 27 Jun 1609 so he
wasted no time re-marrying. According to another Ancestry,com entry he married 4 times as given herein with editing.
He apparently inherited large tracts of land from his father and was a strong Royalist in the Civil War and almost lost it. His
son Francis, born in 1634, might have gone to Virginia about the time (1650) that Parliament was threatening to confiscate
Ferdinado's lands. John is said to be his eldest son and acted as Captain under his father in the Civil War. I think this must
have been Thomas, not John. Even so there would be nothing for Francis to inherit. This is the line with several Francis,
Ferdinand(o)'s, and Gilbert's.
The Dictionary of National Biography states that he had 8 children. I can find only 7. It also states that his eldest son John
inherited his estates and fought with him as his Captain during the Civil War. Charles I raised his standard at Nottingham on
Aug 22, 1642, John would not quite have been 13. He had another son, Thomas born in 1619 who would have more nearly
fit the role. This son did not survive his father to inherit.
Francis was born before June 1634. He would have been eligible to emigrate to Va. by 1650 when his father was having
financial difficulties. Not only was Ferdinando having difficulties but their sponsors, the Stanley family, were also having
difficulty coping with the parliamentary forces. Francis' grandmother probably was Elizabeth Stanley, daughter of the 3rd
Earl of Derby. An argument can be made that it is possible this Francis may have emigrated to Virginia in the 1650-1655
period. If so he certainly had the family credentials to be appointed to the Governor's Council afterhe Stuart restoration in
1660.
This line descends from the Leighs of Baguley and thus would be a product of Agnes de Legh's marriage to William
Venables.
