but <strong>in</strong>vestment <strong>in</strong> the orig<strong>in</strong> country is still more significant. Figure 9 shows that hous<strong>in</strong>g<br />
st<strong>and</strong>s out as the ma<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>vestment <strong>in</strong> the home country. Khachani (2005) argues that<br />
<strong>in</strong>vestment <strong>in</strong> hous<strong>in</strong>g is essential <strong>in</strong> <strong>Morocco</strong> because it is a sign of higher social status<br />
<strong>and</strong> success for migrants <strong>in</strong> the eyes of their community.<br />

• It is also observed that the economic remittance <strong>in</strong>flows <strong>in</strong>crease significantly dur<strong>in</strong>g<br />
summer months, when many Moroccan migrants return home for their holidays (Sas<strong>in</strong>,<br />
2008).<br />
• Some research evaluat<strong>in</strong>g the motivations beh<strong>in</strong>d these remittances has shown that<br />
altruism <strong>and</strong> attachment to homel<strong>and</strong> are important factors beh<strong>in</strong>d remittances to<br />
<strong>Morocco</strong> (Sas<strong>in</strong>, 2008).<br />
6.2.2 Moroccan Government’s Role <strong>in</strong> Remittances & Use of Formal Channels<br />
It is important to mention that, <strong>in</strong> addition to <strong>in</strong>dividual motivations, the<br />
Moroccan government’s careful management of remittances transfers also created a<br />
suitable context for remittances. Accord<strong>in</strong>gly, one of the aspects characteriz<strong>in</strong>g<br />
remittances sent to <strong>Morocco</strong> is the use of formal channels to transfer money. The official<br />
