20 18 Veritas Society The Veritas Society for Planned Giving recognizes benefactors who have remembered Marian Catholic High School in their wills and estate plans. The Veritas Society was established to provide continuing support to the Mission of Marian Catholic High School and invites the participation of alumni, alumni parents, current parents, students, faculty, staff and friends. Combined with the general state of the economy and other factors, need based tuition assistance remains an important priority. Consideration for aid is given to students in good academic and disciplinary standing who experience difficulty in paying tuition because of the sickness, death, or sudden unemployment of a parent. All Sr. Simeon Fund gifts are tax deductible to the full extent of the law, as they are gifted to Marian Catholic High School without restrictions. Some gifts to Marian Catholic don’t necessarily have a price, but are still considered priceless. These gifts and services are vital and serve the entire community by entertaining us, enhancing our buildings, or simply providing a service behind-the-scenes. FinAnCiAl ASSiStAnCe and enDoWeD SCholARShiP PRogRAM FUnDing SoURCeS Families apply for financial assistance by submitting documentation, including income tax information, to an outside agency which determines need. In addition, a letter demonstrating financial need is sent to the President’s Office. Student referrals are also advanced from within the Marian Catholic community. MINISTRY SUBSIDY GRANTS: DOMINICAN SISTeRS OF SPRINGFIeLD Financial assistance is largely made possible through the goodness of the Dominican Sisters who have established grants to subsidize the ministry of their Sisters. The administration of Marian Catholic has traditionally restricted their total gift to tuition assistance. in the 2009-2010 school year, the tuition of 210 students was subsidized in amounts ranging from $750 to $2,000, for a total of $207,767. The SR. SIMeON O.P. FUND FOR TUITION SPONSORShIP This program, an element of the Marian Annual Fund realizes the dream of Sr. M. Simeon McCoppin, O.P., MCHS Treasurer, who worked with many families to find emergency financial sponsorship to supplement the funds gifted annually by the Dominican Sisters. Students receive tuition assistance in amounts appropriate to the situation, the need, and the availability of funds throughout the year. in 2009-2010, tuition sponsorships totaling $172,006 were made available to 110 students. eNDOWeD SChOLARShIPS Endowed scholarships are gifted by benefactors and awarded annually using the interest earned on the principal invested in an endowment fund. All endowed scholarship funds are invested with professional managers and are restricted for annual tuition assistance in keeping with the criteria established by respective benefactors. Administration may divide accrued interest to assist more than one student. Endowed assistance in the amount of $208,298 was given in 2009-2010 to 80 students. ACTIVE SCHOLARSHIPS INCLUDE: MARIAN CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL ENDOWMENT GOLF CLASSIC SCHOLARSHIPS With the funds accrued from the Marian Catholic High School Endowment Classic golf outing, this fund now assists several students with partial tuition scholarships and is used for students in good standing whose families have suffered a loss or hardship. THE MORRISON FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP (3) Established by alumni parents J.M. and JoAnne Morrison, strong advocates for academic recognition, this scholarship requires academic excellence, selfless service, and involvement in school activities. The scholarship is restricted to those with superior academic performance. THE ERMAN C. SAVANT AND LAWRENCE J. CASSIDY FAMILIES MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP (2) Established by alumni parents Edward and Betty Savant in honor of their parents who labored to give their children an excellent education, the scholarship requires strong character and solid academics and gives first preference to students from single-parent families.preference being given to students from the East Side of Chicago. THE MICHAEL J. AND DOROTHY M. MC CAUGHEY, JR. SCHOLARSHIP Established anonymously by an alumnus of the Class of 1967, and later designated by him with the above title, the award is pre-conditioned on the willingness of the student to later assist others with similar need once s/he is established in a career. THE BERT W. AND RITA B. MEANS SCHOLARSHIP Established by an anonymous alumni parent in memory of her gentle but strong parents who supported the Dominican Sisters of St. Christina Parish and provided Catholic education for their own children, this scholarship is given to a young woman whose sense of Catholic service is demonstrated. THE MARGARET S. WRUBEL MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP Established by Frank Bracha in memory of his niece Margie who encouraged her family to achieve, this scholarship funds one student annually who evidences character and service, with first preference given to students from the East Side of Chicago. THE MARIAN CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL MOTHERS CLUB SCHOLARSHIP Established by Mothers Club officers and funded through memorials restricted to the Marian Catholic Mothers Club, and also by Marian Catholic annual gifts flowing from the Mothers Club Fashion Show, the scholarship gives first priority to students of Mothers Club members at the death of a parent. THE SR. CATHERINE O’NEILL, O.P., SCHOLARSHIP An anonymous donor is remembering her Dominican Sister grade school teachers through endowment, restricting the recipient to a young man of humor and kindness whose parents show a strong commitment to Catholic education. THE KEVIN E. BEUKEMA ’97 MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP Established by The Beukema Family in memory of Kevin, a young man of service, joy, and faith whose young life was cut short by a drunken driver, this scholarship that bears Kevin’s name requires that a student be willing to offer generous service in the context of academics and of faith. THE TIMOTHY AND MARY ANN ORMSBY O’HEA ’63 ’62 FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP As MCHS graduates whose five children also graduated from Marian Catholic, Tim and Mary Ann O’Hea ’63 ’62 designed this family scholarship to encourage the efforts and investment of families having three or more children at Marian Catholic at the same time. THE RICHARD AND ANNE POTTS ACADEMIC SCHOLARSHIP Established by former Student Council President and present Mercy Hospital Chief of Staff Dr. Steven Potts, M.D. ’77 in honor of his parents, this scholarship has traditionally been given to qualified students whose families have a medical emergency. 19
