Our Mission 

Marian Catholic High School is a Catholic, coeducational, college preparatory high school within the 

Dominican tradition of study, prayer, community, and preaching. Marian Catholic students seek truth, exhibit 

personal responsibility, cultivate their individual talents, and demonstrate ethical leadership and Christian service. 

Marian Catholic is proud to recognize in this Annual Report the generosity of all individuals and organizations who have so graciously given from July 1, 2009 through June 30, 2010. Every effort

Letter from the President 

Dear Marian Catholic High School Community, 

There’s strength to be found in the meaning of the word “annual.” Annual occurrences invite us into more than 

one-time participation; they engage us in cyclical experiences that take place repeatedly, moving us forward 

into time and space with all the potential that momentum has to offer. It is with this sense of expectation for the 

future, that we present to you the Marian Catholic High School Annual Report of investment for 2009-2010. 

Marian Catholic High School is an educational institution of which you are an extremely vital participant. 

This report demonstrates the generosity of our investors and the stewardship of these gifts. As investors and 

stakeholders, you provide an ever-expanding horizon for our students as they seek an academic and spiritual 

education grounded in ethical leadership and social responsibility. 

We think of the word annual as related to recurring events, but we define it also as completing a life cycle during 

one season of growth. For most students, the growing season of a high school education is four years, and how 

quickly those years slip by in the flurry of activity that defines a Marian Catholic education. 

The annual celebration of graduation is a recurring reminder that while the growing season of a high school 

student is very brief, it is rich in producing seed for the future. We are filled with awe and wonder as we witness 

the transformation of so many children into young men and women during their season of growth at Marian 

Catholic High School. 

With sadness we recognize that not every student is 

granted the full measure of the expected four years. 

Death came too quickly for Michael DeBonfioli, 

Paige Kuersten, and Alex Staniec to complete their 

growing season at Marian Catholic. We mourn their 

loss and keep them forever in prayer. 

We are grateful to all those who give support and 

guidance to our students, serving as investors, 

parents, teachers, administrators, coaches, and 

mentors. You are faithful partners in the Dominican 

Mission of “Teaching Scholars with a Soul” and 

we thank you for helping us to move forward 

into time and space with all the potential that 

momentum has to offer.

Dear Marian Parents, Alumni and Supporters: 

It’s been a very exciting and productive year for the Board of Directors. Last fall, we began a 

two-year period of transition from an Advisory Board to a Governing Board by participating in a 

Board retreat. During that retreat, we were enlightened about Dominican values, so we would 

better understand how Marian Catholic can 

be a “Dominican” school, and we were 

offered opportunities to collaborate with 

the Sisters in our new role as a Board of 

Directors. 

The Board has strong and vibrant 

committees, each of which hit the ground 

running and went right to work for the best 

interests of our school. 

I am proud to say Marian Catholic runs a 

tight financial ship and the ship is sound. 

Advancement works to secure the resources 

needed for the school to realize its mission 

and vision. Facilities determines current and 

future needs of the school. Security focuses on the policies, procedures and emergency planning 

necessary for the campus. Technology addresses current and future needs to ensure Marian’s 

ability to offer the best technical environment to the students and faculty. Public Relations and 

Marketing assists in efforts to carry the Marian message to its constituencies and beyond. 

Mission Integration focuses on ways to keep the Marian Catholic High School community 

grounded in Gospel values and the Dominican charism. 

The people who make up the Board of Directors are passionate and dedicated to the Mission 

of Marian Catholic High School. It is a privilege and honor to serve among them and an exciting 

time for all those in the Marian Catholic High School community. As we respond to current 

needs, we remember with gratitude our fifty year history, and confidently look ahead to where 

we want to be in the future, dedicated always to developing “Scholars with a Soul.”

institutional advancement overview 

As reflected in the listing of achievements of the graduates 

and the financial support of our alumni, parents, past parents, 

faculty, and friends, we are compelled to celebrate the legacy of 

Marian Catholic High School. 

With a strong enrollment of over 1,500 we are blessed with 

families and students who make Marian Catholic their college 

preparatory choice at a critical stage of human and spiritual 

development—embarking upon a life changing experience. 

More than 2,000 people have gifted the school through 

programs of annual giving, endowment, and events as well 

as in-kind. Marian Catholic advancement is further supported 

by the efforts of parents and alumni volunteer organizations 

whose involvement generates income for special projects, 

extracurricular activities, academic programs, scholarships and 

financial assistance. These collective gifts and proceeds provide 

a significant boost to the tuition-driven operating budget. 

As part of the advancement narrative it is important to note that 

our TC2L Capital Campaign income is declining as expected, 

reflecting fulfilled pledges; however, to the credit of our 

constituents, major gift decisions in annual giving continue to 

increase. The success of our annual and capital initiatives is 

also measured by the number of people who invest in Marian 

Catholic. We are a grass roots community–every investor 

is important. 

This Annual Report is delivered to you with pride and heartfelt 

thanks. In a year that some economic pundits refer to as part 

of “the lost decade,” you have helped us to realize a modest 

four percent increase in our annual and endowment funding. 

The Advancement Team pledges to continue to partner with the 

Board of Directors, the school administration, faculty, volunteer 

leadership, and the greater Marian Catholic community to 

continue to position our programs to realize intentional strategic 

growth as the opportunities are presented.

totals for the past two fiscal years reflects a steady rate of participation, while overall annual giving increased 

by four percent.

Marian Catholic Volunteer Groups are integral to constituent driven fund raising directed

our bottom line is experienced beyond revenue as it reflects the dedication and loyalty of

The Marian Annual Fund flowed directly into student life for the 2009-2010 year through several

On behalf of the class of 2010, I would like to thank all of our parents 

for being a constant source of encouragement throughout the past four 

years. You have seen us struggle through late nights of homework and 

studying, and you have driven us to countless school functions, band 

practices, and sporting events. Even though we may not always realize 

it, your sacrifice of paying for four years of a Catholic high school 

education proves that you have high hopes for our futures and want 

what is best for us. 

Also, I would like to thank all of the faculty and staff, especially the 

teachers, who have guided us throughout our journey here. Even when 

we fell short of your expectations, you encouraged us and helped 

us get to where we needed to be. You gave us the confidence, hard 

working nature, and strong faith in God that will carry us through our 

next phase of life. 

What Marian has taught us above all is the power that faith can have 

in our lives. We have been strengthened in our faith through all-school 

Masses, prayer services, Kairos, and four years of religion classes. 

We have continually been taught what it means to be followers of 

Christ. If we live by Jesus’ example of love and service, we can be 

sure to live a meaningful, successful life. God put each of us on earth 

for a reason, and He blessed us with many gifts and talents. I really 

believe Marian has helped us discover these talents and has given us 

the faith and courage to find our purpose. 

All we can do is trust in God 

and know that He will guide 

us. As we have heard all year, 

we can do all things through 

Christ who strengthens us. He 

will keep us humble during our 

successes and confident during 

our failures. With a little help 

from God, all of our dreams can

The need for emergency tuition sponsorship arises many times each school 

year, 2009-2010 was no exception. Combined with the general state of 

the economy and other factors, need based tuition assistance remains an 

important priority. 

Consideration for aid is given to students in good academic and disciplinary 

standing who experience difficulty in paying tuition because of the 

sickness, death, or sudden unemployment of a parent. 

All Sr. Simeon Fund gifts are tax deductible to the full extent of the law, as 

they are gifted to Marian Catholic High School without restrictions. 

Some gifts to Marian Catholic don’t necessarily have a price, but are still considered priceless. These gifts and services are vital

Families apply for financial assistance by submitting documentation, including income tax 

information, to an outside agency which determines need. In addition, a letter demonstrating 

financial need is sent to the President’s Office. Student referrals are also advanced from 

within the Marian Catholic community. 

MINISTRY SUBSIDY GRANTS: DOMINICAN SISTeRS OF SPRINGFIeLD 

Financial assistance is largely made possible through the goodness of the Dominican Sisters who 

have established grants to subsidize the ministry of their Sisters. The administration of Marian 

Catholic has traditionally restricted their total gift to tuition assistance. 

in the 2009-2010 school year, the tuition of 210 students was subsidized in amounts ranging 

from $750 to $2,000, for a total of $207,767. 

The SR. SIMeON O.P. FUND FOR TUITION SPONSORShIP 

This program, an element of the Marian Annual Fund realizes the dream of Sr. M. Simeon 

McCoppin, O.P., MCHS Treasurer, who worked with many families to find emergency financial 

sponsorship to supplement the funds gifted annually by the Dominican Sisters. Students receive 

tuition assistance in amounts appropriate to the situation, the need, and the availability of funds 

throughout the year. 

in 2009-2010, tuition sponsorships totaling $172,006 were made available to 110 students. 

eNDOWeD SChOLARShIPS 

Endowed scholarships are gifted by benefactors and awarded annually using the interest earned 

on the principal invested in an endowment fund. All endowed scholarship funds are invested with 

professional managers and are restricted for annual tuition assistance in keeping with the criteria 

established by respective benefactors. Administration may divide accrued interest to assist more 

than one student. 

Endowed assistance in the amount of $208,298 was given in 2009-2010 to 80 students. 

ACTIVE SCHOLARSHIPS INCLUDE: 

MARIAN CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL ENDOWMENT GOLF CLASSIC SCHOLARSHIPS 

With the funds accrued from the Marian Catholic High School Endowment Classic golf outing, this 

fund now assists several students with partial tuition scholarships and is used for students in good 

standing whose families have suffered a loss or hardship. 

THE MORRISON FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP (3) 

Established by alumni parents J.M. and JoAnne Morrison, strong advocates for academic 

recognition, this scholarship requires academic excellence, selfless service, and involvement in 

school activities. The scholarship is restricted to those with superior academic performance. 

THE ERMAN C. SAVANT AND LAWRENCE J. CASSIDY FAMILIES MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP (2) 

Established by alumni parents Edward and Betty Savant in honor of their parents who labored 

to give their children an excellent education, the scholarship requires strong character and solid 

academics and gives first preference to students from single-parent families.preference being given 

to students from the East Side of Chicago. 

THE MICHAEL J. AND DOROTHY M. MC CAUGHEY, JR. SCHOLARSHIP 

Established anonymously by an alumnus of the Class of 1967, and later designated by him with the 

above title, the award is pre-conditioned on the willingness of the student to later assist others with 

similar need once s/he is established in a career. 

THE BERT W. AND RITA B. MEANS SCHOLARSHIP 

Established by an anonymous alumni parent in memory of her gentle but strong parents who 

supported the Dominican Sisters of St. Christina Parish and provided Catholic education for their 

own children, this scholarship is given to a young woman whose sense of Catholic service is 

demonstrated. 

THE MARGARET S. WRUBEL MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP 

Established by Frank Bracha in memory of his niece Margie who encouraged her family to achieve, 

this scholarship funds one student annually who evidences character and service, with first preference 

given to students from the East Side of Chicago. 

THE MARIAN CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL MOTHERS CLUB SCHOLARSHIP 

Established by Mothers Club officers and funded through memorials restricted to the Marian 

Catholic Mothers Club, and also by Marian Catholic annual gifts flowing from the Mothers Club 

Fashion Show, the scholarship gives first priority to students of Mothers Club members at the death 

of a parent. 

THE SR. CATHERINE O’NEILL, O.P., SCHOLARSHIP 

An anonymous donor is remembering her Dominican Sister grade school teachers through endowment, 

restricting the recipient to a young man of humor and kindness whose parents show a strong 

commitment to Catholic education. 

THE KEVIN E. BEUKEMA ’97 MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP 

Established by The Beukema Family in memory of Kevin, a young man of service, joy, and faith 

whose young life was cut short by a drunken driver, this scholarship that bears Kevin’s name 

requires that a student be willing to offer generous service in the context of academics and of faith. 

THE TIMOTHY AND MARY ANN ORMSBY O’HEA ’63 ’62 FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP 

As MCHS graduates whose five children also graduated from Marian Catholic, Tim and Mary Ann 

O’Hea ’63 ’62 designed this family scholarship to encourage the efforts and investment of families 

having three or more children at Marian Catholic at the same time. 

THE RICHARD AND ANNE POTTS ACADEMIC SCHOLARSHIP 

Established by former Student Council President and present Mercy Hospital Chief of Staff Dr. 

Steven Potts, M.D. ’77 in honor of his parents, this scholarship has traditionally been given to 

qualified students whose families have a medical emergency.

THE FLANAGAN FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP 

Established by Hall of Fame inductee Terry Flanagan ’62 and his wife, Patricia LeRose Flanagan ’64, 

the fund recognizes the average student who evidences extraordinary effort in every area of school life. 

THE KEVIN F. MAHER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP 

Given in memory of their son Kevin who was killed as a high school senior in an automobile 

accident, B.K. and Frank Maher established this award which requires at least average academics 

and a positive attitude reflected in involvement and service. 

THE ARTHUR AND LA VERNE WELSH SCHOLARSHIP 

Designated by the Welsh sons and daughters in honor of their parents’ 85th and 75th birthdays, 

the scholarship is restricted to a good student whose parent is expending extraordinary effort to 

retain the student in a Catholic high school. 

THE ELIZABETH AND JOHN BITUNJAC MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP 

This scholarship was established by alumni parent Jean Fuehrmeyer in memory of her parents 

whose fidelity and commitment to Catholic education were extraordinary, especially in light of John’s 

blindness from World War ii. 

THE VINCENT PASCALE ’63 MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP 

Given in memory of Vince, well-loved MCHS alumnus of the Class of 1963, by his parents Dr. Luke 

and Elsie Pascale, this scholarship is restricted to a solid student whose family evidences courage 

in the face of illness. 

THE LT. COMMANDER PATRICK J. MURPHY ’81 MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP 

This scholarship is in honor of Lt. Patrick J. Murphy ’81 whose life was taken in the terrorist attack 

on The Pentagon on September 11, 2001. Established by classmates of Patrick Murphy who 

sought a living tribute, a yearly reminder of lives lived with courage, this ongoing scholarship is 

given to a student who evidences service to God, country and family. 

THE GEORGE KLUPCHAK FAMILY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP 

An ardent fan of every activity in which his children were involved, alumni parent George Klupchak 

appreciated both effort and talent. The scholarship was established in George’s name by the 

Klupchak family, as well as by friends led by Tom Kubisak ’69. 

THE AMADIO (STU) AND JO ANNE BRUNI SCHOLARSHIP 

With the sudden and tragic death of Amadio “Stu” Bruni, his family and friends directed memorials 

in his name to Marian Catholic. Stu’s family later funded this endowed scholarship to be given to a 

student who lives in Stu’s spirit-with energy, integrity, hard work, and personal poise. 

THE ANNE NOVAK ’08 MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP 

Established by her family in memory and honor of Annie who lost her life in a car accident as 

a Sophomore at Marian Catholic High School. in keeping with Annie novak’s joyous spirit, the 

Scholarship recognizes a young student whose faith makes God’s love known to others. The novak 

Family has endorsed the direction of other gifts into this special fund. 

THE DEAN PEROZZI, JR. ’94 MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP 

Established by family and friends in memory of Dean whose young life was cut short by a tragic 

accident while working, the scholarship honors Dean’s love of music and the arts. 

THE NICOLA AND MARIA M. PASCARELLA MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP 

Given by alumni parent Philip Pascarella in memory of his parents, faith-filled Catholic individuals 

who valued hard work and integrity, the fund is restricted to a student with a strong work ethic 

who lives the Catholic faith. 

THE GEORGE AND SHIRLEY KLINE SCHOLARSHIP 

Shirley and George Kline (Kline’s Department Store of Chicago Heights), local residents for more than 

50 years, believed education is the biggest key to success and wished to maintain their commitment 

of helping young people to pursue their college prep educational goals. Through the initiative of 

Shirley, the Klines established a scholarship to benefit children of noble, working families in Chicago 

Heights and locally who want to achieve and give back to their community in return. 

THE DIANE FUSHI DEFRIES ’64 SCHOLARSHIP 

Given in memory of Diane DeFries ’64 by her friends (led by Mary Ann Balfour Carlstead ’64), 

the scholarship is restricted to a student sharing Diane’s love of service and/or a family who has 

suffered from cancer.

career and family, commit to “leading” and assisting another family in similar circumstances. 

THE KRONER FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP 

Established by alumni parent Peter A. Kroner, Jr., The Kroner Family Scholarship reflects passion 

for increasing a student’s opportunities through completing post-secondary education at the 

appropriate college/university and is offered to seniors through essay application. 

THE LUCILLE AND ARTHUR FERRARI FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP (2) 

Established by the children of Lucille and Arthur Ferrari to honor the memory of parents whose 

energy, hard work, and vision created in their family a culture of entrepreneurship, integrity and 

responsibility, this scholarship is especially targeted for students trained to work in The Lucille 

Ferrari Spartan Shop. 

THE JACK GALLAGHER FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP 

Established in the spirit of an entrepreneurial and loving family, The Jack Gallagher Family Scholarship 

is awarded to a student who is distinguished by a strong work ethic, integrity, humor, and initiative.

THE GRIFFIN FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP (3) 

Established by current parents Dan and Holly Griffin as a response to young people called to service 

and leadership, this scholarship recognizes that students and families form the key to Marian 

Catholic’s future in their willingness to share with others what has been shared with them. 

THE MCQUADE FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP (Also called the “Spunk and Spirit Award”) 

Through the gift of this scholarship, The McQuade Family affirms that average students with 

“spark” can light fires of humor, kindness and courage. Special preference is given to a student 

whose family is facing illness. 

THE FRED W. AND LA VERNE BRZOZOWSKI FAMILY SCHOALRSHIP 

Given by the family of alumni parent, Fred W. Brzozowski, whose generosity, humor and kindness were 

known to all who knew him, this scholarship is intended to benefit single parent families in financial 

needs whose sons or daughters are willing to seize the opportunity of the dream of a Catholic education. 

THE LAWRENCE AND GENEVIEVE FRAZZINI MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP 

Created by William and Carol (Frazzini) ‘74 Elliott in honor of Carol’s parents, in keeping with the 

kindness, simplicity, and genuine refinement of Lawrence and Genevieve Frazzini, the scholarship 

calls for a student who mirrors their humility, gentleness and simplicity. 

THE HOGAN-KING FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP 

initiated by alumni parent Dick King in honor of his wife, Mary Kay Hogan ’78 King, this scholarship 

celebrates families with a proven commitment to Catholic education, even in the face of adversitythe 

loss of a parent in death, the illness of a parent which incurs crushing medical expenses, or the 

loss of employment by a parent. 

THE HELEN AND HARRY HOWISEN FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP 

Gifted by alumni parents who value the Catholic faith, this scholarship is given to a young person 

with hard work and courage who faces chronic health issues or difficulties. 

THE RIPPEY FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP 

Established and funded by alumni parents Michael and Cherie Rippey, this scholarship was 

established to assist qualified students having financial need to attend Marian Catholic High School 

without constant concern about how to meet the cost of such attendance. 

THE KEVIN RIPPEY ’05 SCHOLARSHIP 

Established and funded by Kevin’s parents, Michael and Cherie Rippey, this scholarship recognizes the 

value of a Catholic high school education and is based on the beliefs of The Rippey Family Scholarship. 

The scholarship, in the spirit of all scholarships emerging through The Courage to Lead, speaks to a 

moral obligation of giving freely to another what we have been freely given: opportunity. 

THE FLAMINI FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP 

Flowing from an understanding of loss and the memory of a friend, this scholarship honors Marian 

Catholic High School alumna Gail Amos ’68 whose death came too soon, and whose gifts intersect 

with the values of The Flamini Family and their own journey of caring, of children, of laughter, and 

of good mischief. The scholarship is restricted to families who have experienced loss.

As a legacy to their parents, this scholarship was established by the children of Stanley and

in honor of Mark’s mother, Leona, and in memory of his father, Paul, this endowment celebrates 

the action of God in the lives of students, especially in those moments spent present to God in the 

Marian Catholic Student Chapel. This endowment is intended for the up-keep of the Student Chapel 

and to support Campus Ministry Retreat Programs. 

THE SR. M. PAUL ENDOWMENT 

Through a grass roots effort, the Marian Catholic community established The Sr. Mary Paul 

Endowment in September 2008 to honor what is closest to her heart—the students, faculty and 

families of Marian Catholic High School. At the discretion of Sr. Paul, funds may be channeled 

toward faculty development or student scholarship. 

THE LOESCH FAMILY VOCATION FUND is an endowed scholarship established by Loesch alumni, 

in honor of their parents, Connor and Anne Loesch on the occasion of their being inducted into 

the Marian Catholic High School 2008 Hall of Fame for Lifetime Achievement. The Loesch Family 

Vocation Fund will provide revenue for the promotion of religious vocations, especially to the 

consecrated life of the Dominican Sisters of Springfield.

In its 20th year, the Marian Catholic Endowment Golf Classic has 

focused on building a future of scholarship. By investing the proceeds 

from the Endowment Golf Classic and holding them in perpetuity, the 

interest generated from the principal has supported qualified students 

who otherwise could not afford to attend Marian Catholic High School 

students with the spunk and spirit of our golfers, young people 

who value the privilege to become scholars with a soul. The 2009

Archdiocese of Chicago’s Office for Racial Justice to receive the St. Katharine Drexel Racial 

Justice Award. His Eminence Francis Cardinal George, O.M.I., presided over the ceremony.

appearances to the values of a person and beyond surface information to arrive at justice for all. Relying on critical
