<strong>Earned</strong> <strong>Time</strong> <strong>Off</strong> (<strong>ETO</strong>) <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>Short</strong>-<strong>Term</strong> <strong>Disability</strong> <strong>Bank</strong> (<strong>STDB</strong>)<br />

Instead of rigid allotments of vacation, holidays <strong>and</strong> sick time, BJC’s<br />

paid time off programs give you more flexibility to use your paid time<br />

off as you want it <strong>and</strong> need it. BJC recognizes the diverse needs of our<br />

work force <strong>and</strong> the special dem<strong>and</strong>s of the health-care field.<br />

Who’s Eligible for Coverage*<br />

■ regular full-time employees working<br />

35 hours or more a week<br />

■ regular part-time employees working<br />

15 hours or more a week<br />

When You Start Earning<br />

<strong>ETO</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>STDB</strong><br />

■ the date you are hired or attain<br />

eligible status<br />

Earning Your <strong>Earned</strong><br />

<strong>Time</strong> <strong>Off</strong> (<strong>ETO</strong>)<br />

■ you earn <strong>ETO</strong> for hours paid, or<br />

scheduled <strong>and</strong> canceled due to lack<br />

of work, but not on hours cashed in<br />

(payout) or severance pay<br />

■ a maximum of 2,080 hours worked/<br />

scheduled per calendar year is taken<br />

into account<br />

■ you have “Available” <strong>and</strong> “Accrued”<br />

<strong>ETO</strong> hours (shown on your paycheck)<br />

■ “Available” <strong>ETO</strong> = <strong>ETO</strong> hours you<br />

can use after the pay period in which<br />

they are earned (maximum of 104<br />

hours per year)<br />

■ “Accrued” <strong>ETO</strong> = additional<br />

<strong>ETO</strong> hours that are added to your<br />

“Available” <strong>ETO</strong> bank on the<br />

anniversary of your hire/eligibility<br />

date; amount depends on your length<br />

of service <strong>and</strong> position. You can use<br />

the “Accrued” <strong>ETO</strong> after the pay<br />

period those hours are added to your<br />

“Available” bank.<br />

■ additional bonus <strong>ETO</strong> hours—40<br />

hours for full-time employees, 20<br />

for part-time—are added to your<br />

“Available” <strong>ETO</strong> upon completion<br />

of 20 years of service <strong>and</strong> every<br />

fifth year afterward (except certain<br />

employees with “gr<strong>and</strong>fathered”<br />

accrual rates)<br />

■ you may accumulate a maximum of<br />

750 hours of “Available” <strong>ETO</strong>; any<br />

additional hours are forfeited<br />

For use after being absent three<br />

consecutive work days or 24 consecutive<br />

scheduled work hours, whichever occurs<br />

first. Must use <strong>ETO</strong> for first three days<br />

May accumulate a maximum of<br />

520 hours<br />

<strong>ETO</strong> Advance<br />

■ you will be advanced up to 16 hours of “Available” <strong>ETO</strong><br />

upon hire (pro-rated for part-time employees)<br />

■ you can be advanced up to 16 hours of “Available” <strong>ETO</strong> if<br />

you change from benefit-ineligible status to benefit-eligible<br />

(pro-rated for part-time employees)<br />

■ your <strong>ETO</strong> advance eventually will be zeroed out as you<br />

accrue “Available” <strong>ETO</strong> each pay period that you work<br />

Using <strong>ETO</strong><br />

■ you must use at least 80 hours of “Available” <strong>ETO</strong> each<br />

calendar year if you are a full-time employee<br />

■ you must use at least 40 hours of “Available” <strong>ETO</strong> each<br />

calendar year if you are a part-time employee (or switching<br />

from full-time to part-time or vice versa)<br />

■ use of <strong>ETO</strong> should be scheduled in advance if possible <strong>and</strong> is<br />

subject to approval by your supervisor<br />

LEVEL YEARS OF SERVICE<br />

Using <strong>Short</strong>-<strong>Term</strong> <strong>Disability</strong> <strong>Bank</strong> (<strong>STDB</strong>)<br />

■ <strong>STDB</strong> works like a short-term disability plan. You use<br />

<strong>STDB</strong> for your own short-term personal injury or illness<br />

after being absent three consecutive work days or 24<br />

consecutive scheduled work hours for employees who do<br />

not work 8 hour shifts (must use “Available” <strong>ETO</strong> for the<br />

first three days/24 hours missed)<br />

■ if your <strong>STDB</strong> is exhausted, you must use “Available” <strong>ETO</strong><br />

■ after 90 days of illness or injury, eligible employees may be<br />

covered by BJC’s long-term disability benefit<br />

■ <strong>ETO</strong> time is paid based on your primary rate of pay in<br />

effect when the hours are used, <strong>and</strong> does not include shift<br />

differentials or bonuses<br />

Your <strong>Short</strong>-<strong>Term</strong> <strong>Disability</strong> <strong>Bank</strong> (<strong>STDB</strong>)<br />

■ the company provides <strong>STDB</strong> based on your hours paid, or<br />

scheduled <strong>and</strong> canceled due to lack of work, but not on<br />

hours cashed in (payout) or severance pay<br />

■ a maximum of 2,080 hours worked/scheduled per calendar<br />

year is taken into account<br />

■ up to 64 hours (8 days) of <strong>STDB</strong> per calendar year will be<br />

added to your bank<br />
