Alex Constantinescu, MD, Pediatric Nephrologist
Medical Director
Pediatric Nephrology and Hypertension Program
Dr. Constantinescu is a board-certified pediatric
nephrologist who joined the medical staff at Joe DiMaggio
Children’s Hospital in 2003. A graduate of the Victor Babe
University of Medicine in Timisoara, Romania, he completed
internships and residencies at hospitals in Romania and
New York. He was a fellow in pediatric nephrology at
Montefiore Medical Center/Albert Einstein College of
Medicine in New York. Dr. Constantinescu was an associate
professor of pediatrics and medical director of the pediatric transplant nephrology
program at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey/Robert Wood
Johnson Medical School.
A respected educator, Dr. Constantinescu is a clinical associate professor at the
University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and Nova Southeastern University.
Ivy Boydstun, MD, Pediatric Nephrologist
Dr. Boydstun is a board-certified pediatric nephrologist
who joined Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital in 2008.
She is a graduate of the University of Texas Medical
School, and completed a residency in pediatrics at Brown
University/Rhode Island Hospital and a fellowship in
pediatric nephrology at Yale University School of Medicine.
Dr. Boydstun was an assistant professor of pediatrics at
Baylor College of Medicine, and practiced nephrology at
Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston. She was an associate
professor of clinical pediatrics in the Division of Pediatric
Nephrology and Hypertension at Stony Brook University Medical Center in
New York.
Her clinical interests include kidney diseases of newborns, infants and children,
with special emphasis on nephrotic syndrome, and renal involvement in systemic
diseases, including lupus, HIV infection and diabetes.

Pediatric Nephrology, Dialysis
and Hypertension Program
Kidneys work like a 24-hour cleaning machine, removing waste from
the blood, maintaining a balance of salt and water in the body,
and helping to regulate blood pressure and red blood cell counts.
When kidneys fail to function properly, physicians may treat the patient
with various forms of dialysis and, possibly, replacement of the kidney.
Recent advances in medicine have resulted in very high success rates for
kidney transplantation.
Advanced, Compassionate Care
The Pediatric Nephrology, Dialysis and Hypertension Program at Joe DiMaggio Children’s
Hospital is the only program of its kind in Broward County. The multidisciplinary team of
highly qualified, caring medical professionals includes physicians who are board certified
in pediatric nephrology (the study of the kidneys), and nurses who are certified and
experienced in pediatric kidney dialysis.
Conditions treated:
• Electrolyte abnormalities
• Hematuria and/or proteinuria
• Hypertension
• Kidney stones
• Metabolic bone disease
• Renal failure or renal insufficiency
• Voiding problems (in conjunction with our Pediatric Urology colleagues)
A full range of highly specialized services are available, including:
• Percutaneous renal biopsy
• Continuous Venovenous Hemofiltration (CVVH)
• Continuous Venovenous Hemofiltration with Dialysis (CVVHD)
• Inpatient and outpatient dialysis (hemodialysis) in the hospital, or training for
overnight at-home dialysis (peritoneal dialysis)
• Coordinated treatment plans that include your child’s pediatrician, as well as pediatric
endocrinologists, pediatric urologists, child life specialists, social workers, dietitians and
other medical professionals
• Monitoring and evaluation of your child’s overall health, growth and development
• Initial testing, preparation and referrals for kidney transplantation, along with postsurgical
follow-up
• Referrals to a variety of community resources that can expand your knowledge of
kidney disease and assist you in managing it
Because Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital is a facility of Memorial Healthcare System,
our medical team has full access to the system’s technology and medical expertise.
Treating the Whole Child
Living with kidney disease can be overwhelming. Both hemodialysis and peritoneal
dialysis are time-consuming and present changes in activities, diet and other aspects of
daily life.
In addition to advanced medical services, the Pediatric Nephrology, Dialysis and
Hypertension Program provides essential emotional support. A child-friendly
environment, including televisions, games and other activities, helps provide
entertainment during lengthy dialysis treatment. In addition, a teacher is available
on-site to assist children who have extended school absences.
