GENERAL<strong>Information</strong>DEAR FAMILIES,visitingHoursPediatricIntensive Care/Acute Care UnitPATIENT INFORMATIONF <strong>Information</strong> Via Telephone will only be providedto the parents. When you call you will be asked for yourchild’s Medical Record Number (MR Number), which islocated on your pink ID wristband.F All Patient <strong>Information</strong> is confidential and isonly provided to parents and those who are part of themedical team caring for your child.F A Telephone is located in each room. Press 9 toaccess an outside line. From outside the hospital, phoneyour child’s room directly by calling (954) 265-2020,then press 11 followed by the bed number and roomnumber.F Computer Access – You may use your personalcomputer in the <strong>PICU</strong> and you can access the Internetby using Internet Explorer and signing on as a “guest.”Also, there is a computer in the Family Support Centerfrom which you may access the Internet.F CarePages are free, private, personalized Web pagesthat help you keep in touch with family and friends.CarePages let your loved ones know how your child isdoing without numerous phone calls. You can receivesupportive messages and keep in touch before, duringand after hospitalization. To begin, go to jdch.com andclick on the CarePage logo.F Support Services are available in the hospital,including a social worker, family advocate, chaplain,child life specialist and Lotsy Dotsy, our resident clown.F Questions or Concerns – Please feel free to askas many questions as you need to feel comfortable aboutyour child’s care, and do not hesitate to share yourconcerns with the hospital staff. We are here to help you.F Help Alert – You know your child best. Talk toyour nurse or charge nurse if you see changes in yourchild that you feel need attention. If you are stillconcerned, dial 88 from your bedside phone. AHelp Alert team member will come as soon as possible.H aving a child in the PediatricIntensive Care Unit (<strong>PICU</strong>) isa scary and emotional time for allfamily members. We, as FamilyAdvisory Council members, knowhow difficult this can be, because wehave experienced this ourselves. Incollaboration with the wonderful <strong>PICU</strong>Team, we have put together this <strong>PICU</strong><strong>Information</strong> Guide to make your timehere as comfortable as possible.Remember, you are a partner in thecare of your child and we can worktogether with the hospital’s staff to helpprovide high-quality medical care.Visitors/visitationF <strong>PICU</strong> Access Card – When your childis admitted to the <strong>PICU</strong>, you will be given a<strong>PICU</strong> access card and will need to use this cardto get into the <strong>PICU</strong>. These <strong>PICU</strong> access cardsare obtained at the security desk on admissionand must be returned when leaving the floor orhospital. There will be three additional badgesfor your visitors.F Visitation Hours – Parents are welcometo stay with their child around the clock. Oneparent may sleep at the bedside. Pediatric Intensive Care/Acute Care UnitComfort and SafetyF Toys – You may bring familiar items from home,such as a blanket or toy for your child’s comfort.F Cleanliness – Please make sure that all visitorswash their hands before and after seeing your child.F Food – If your child is designated “NPO” (notallowed to eat or drink), please try not to eat in theroom.F Visitors – You may want to limit visitors andnoise while your child is in the <strong>PICU</strong>, since you andyour child need rest. Children who are visiting maygo to the playroom with adult supervision.F Counseling – A child life specialist is available toexplain what is going on to your child and to his orher siblings in words they can understand.F Bedside Rails – We ask that your child’s bedsiderails be up at all times, especially when you leave theroom. Please let your child’s nurse know when youare leaving.F Schooling – We have a full-time teacher in thehospital to continue your child’s education duringhis or her extended stay.F Valuables – Please do not leave any valuables inthe room (this includes, but is not limited to, purses,jewelry, cell phones, computers, etc.).F Emergencies – We may restrict visitors or blocka hallway due to an emergency situation.F Handwashing is the best way to prevent the spreadof bacteria and viruses. Please wash or sanitize yourhands when entering and leaving your child’s room.Foam hand sanitizers are in each room.F Visitors – To prevent the spread of infection,anyone who has a cold or viral infection is asked to visitby telephone, text message, get well cards or e-mail.NourishmentsF Cafeteria Discount – Upon admission, parents (orthe child’s legal guardian) receive pink ID wristbandsfor identification at the security desk and a 50 percentdiscount in the hospital cafeteria.F The Nutrition Room, located in the <strong>PICU</strong>, providescomplimentary coffee, tea and snacks for parentsthroughout the day. Bagels are provided every morning.F A Free Hot Buffet for Parents is served atlunchtime every day in the Family Support Center on thefourth floor. Be sure to wear your pink ID wristbands.F The <strong>Hospital</strong> Cafeteria, McDonalds andAu Bon Pain are located on the first floor.Sleeping AccommodationsF Parent Sleeping Arrangements – A sleeper chairis provided for one parent to sleep in the room with yourchild. This chair is kept at the back of the room awayfrom the bedside to allow medical staff access to your childand provide room for necessary equipment.F The Conine Clubhouse has a limited number ofcomplimentary rooms for parents of children in the <strong>PICU</strong>.See your child’s nurse if you need accommodations.F Shower Facilities are on the fourth floor next to theFamily Support Center. You can get personal hygiene itemsfrom your child’s nurse or Patient Care Assistant (PCA).F Visitor Bathrooms are located outside of the <strong>PICU</strong>.Infection ControlF Isolation – Your child may be placed on isolationprecautions while in the <strong>PICU</strong>. If an isolation sign is postedon the door, it is important that you follow the sign’s<strong>guide</strong>lines to prevent the spread of viruses and bacteriaoutside of your child’s room.Compassionate SupportF Family Advocate is available to you when needed.As an emotional and informational lifeline, the familyadvocate provides additional guidance and support tofamilies during a child’s hospital stay.F A Personal Notebook/Pad is a good way to keeptrack of your child’s medical routines. You can writedown questions for your physicians and/or physicianassistants, who will meet with you every day.F An Evening Bedside Report updating the night shiftstaff is done by the nurses during the evening change ofshift. As a parent, you are included. We welcome yourcomments and input.F The Nursing Staff works 12-hour shifts(7am to 7pm). Your child is assigned a nurse for eachshift. There is also a“charge nurse” availablefor any questions orsituations that you mayhave a concern about. Thisinformation, includingcontact phone numbers,is provided on the dryerase board in your child’sroom. If at any timeyou have an immediateconcern regarding yourchild’s care, please contactthe charge nurse.F Visiting Between Patients – To prevent the spreadof infection, there is no visiting between patient roomsand/or between patients from other floors.F Patient Bathrooms (in the patient’s room) – Inorder to prevent the spread of infection, these bathroomsare for patient use only.WORK RoundsWhatWork Rounds are conducted daily in the<strong>PICU</strong>. The purpose is for the team (includingfamily) to communicate significant events andtreatment plans regarding your child.WhenWork Rounds are conducted approximatelybetween 9am and noon each day. This time canvary depending on the number of children inthe <strong>PICU</strong> and the complexity of their cases.WhereWork Rounds are held in the hallway in frontof your child’s room. The doors of the adjacentrooms will be closed to protect you child’s privacy.HowThere will be discussion among the teammembers as to the best course of your child’streatment. With you present, the team willmake decisions and formulate the day’s plan.As parents, you are an important part of yourchild’s healthcare team. When asked, you mayprovide the healthcare team with information orask brief questions. Please understand that, infairness to all the patients and their families, thehealthcare team must complete Work Rounds onall of the children in the <strong>PICU</strong> on a timely basis.Work Rounds cannot be a time for a lengthydiscussion with you or other family members.We ask that you write down and save yourquestions until all Work Rounds are completed.Each afternoon the physician and/or physicianassistant caring for your child will come backand speak with you to answer any questions.We wish your child a short and successful stay.Our thoughts are with you throughthis journey.JDCH <strong>PICU</strong> Brochure tv4 10.indd 21/29/10 11:59 AM
