THE FIRST CATALOGUE OF THE HUNTER COLLECTION’S GREEK COINS
NB003 Combe, C. Nummorum Veterum Populorum et Urbium Qui in Muso
Gulielmi Hunter Asservantur, Descriptio Figuris Illustrata. London, 1782. Large
quarto, pp. xi, 354, corrigenda, 68 engraved plates. Bound in half calf with
clean. £295
William Hunter, Physician-Extraordinaire to Queen Charlotte in 1764 and First Professor of
Anatomy at the Royal Academy in 1768, was an avid collector during the latter half of the 18 th
Century and whose collection was second only to that of the French Royal Collection. In 1781
he donated a substantial quantity of Scottish gold to the Museum of the Society of Antiquaries
in Glasgow, and then went on to bequeath “a cabinet of coins and medals ancient and modern,
of which the different series are confessedly the most complete and best connected of any in
Europe”, to Glasgow University, along with £8,000 (over £500,000 in today’s money) to support
and house it. It was from these collections that the Hunterian Coin Cabinet was founded and is
today one of the world’s greatest collections.
5,000 pages. A monumental work and invaluable to anyone with an interest in historical medals. Rarely seen as a
A VERY RARE BOOK ON THE MEDALLIC HISTORY OF NAPOLEON
NB022 Scargill, Miss A. M. Medallic History of Napoleon Bonaparte, Translated by Miss Anne Mudie Scargill From
the Original Manuscript, Intended to have been published by the late Government of France. London, 1820. Quarto, pp.
xvi, 182 pages. Contemporary (?) boards, rebacked with label laid on, pages untrimmed with some foxing towards
the back of the book. Rather worn but fully intact with manuscript notes throughout the text. £345
Although relatively little is known of Miss Ann Scargill, it would appear that she was the step-daughter of the infamous James Mudie,
described by Michael Dolley as being a “rascal of the first order, broken from the Royal Marines in 1810, bankrupted in 1821 and horse
whipped on the streets of Sydney in 1840.” (Manville’s Biographical Dictionary p.193). Indeed his story is a fascinating tale and it would seem
that Anne was not only his step-daughter but also the mother to three of his children. Mudie did himself have an interest in medals and was
responsible for the series of ‘National Medals’ produced between 1817 and 1820 which commemorated British victories over the French during
the Reign of George III and eventually bankrupted him – for the second time. For the whole sordid story see Michael Dolley’s fascinating
article in the 1979 Spink NC p.337-339.
