Published: January 2004
Format: Hardcopy - 37 pages
This comprehensive report, illustrated with tables
and graphs, analyses emissions and their
measurement, compares and assesses the
different fuel technologies available - from fossil
fuels through various renewable options to
electrical energy - and gives a thorough evaluation
of the cost aspect, all based upon data collected
from real life operations. Compiled using the
combined knowledge and experience of the UITP
Bus Committee, it is designed to help achieve a
balance between ecological and financial concerns
when making fuel and fleet decisions. The last
report issued on clean propellants for the future
was in 1997 at the Stuttgart Congress.
Innovation in Road Public Transport
Maastricht, February 2001 - Conference
proceedings
Published: January 2001
Format: CD - 21 speaker presentations
In order to restore the image of the bus mode, it is
important to think in terms of a system that
integrates not only the vehicles, but the
infrastructures and operating policies as well. A
vision of the buses of tomorrow - in terms of design,
comfort, accessibility, passenger information, etc -
is presented in a ten-year perspective. Bus
infrastructure is compared with the infrastructure of
other modes of transport and experiences from
several cities are outlined. From an operation
perspective, double-articulated minibuses,
midibuses, standard, 3-axles or articulated buses
are assessed and other themes like reliability,
safety, are also addressed.
Guidelines for Tramway Modernization in CEE
and CIS
Final report Working Group of Tramway
Modernization
Published: February 2010
Format: CD
Purpose: The development of tramway systems in
Central and Eastern European Countries (CEEC)
started in the late 19th century and – contrary to
most other parts if the world – was heavily
promoted after World War II. After the fall of the Iron
Curtain, these systems suffered from a lack of
interest and funding and therefore were not
regularly maintained. However there is no doubt
that urban transport systems, especially in large
cities, cannot be properly developed to meet the
needs of citizens without the appropriate
participation of rail-based systems.
This report provides the reader with four
consolidated reports covering the main aspect of
light rail maintenance strategies. Furthermore it
holds a large number of case studies, which provide
real-life experiences and the lessons learnt by some
of the most advanced light rail systems.
Readership:
This report is aimed at both authorities from cities to
local municipalities and operators interested and
responsible for planning, financing and maintaining
light rail systems as well as looking for best practise
cases concerning refurbishment of rolling stock and
Format: CD - 20 speaker presentations
The pioneering "RUBIN" project in Nuremberg - to
convert the U2 and U3 lines of the city over to
automatic operation - and a wealth of speakers
bringing international experience in the field formed
the backbone of the conference. With driverless
metro lines already in operation in several cities
across the globe - and being constructed or
considered in several more - the information made
available at the conference covered a wide range
of experience. Technology, finance, organisation
and marketing were all touched upon across the
sessions. The potential of these new possibilities
were stressed as were improved safety and
reliability, new opportunities for the workforce, and
a more reactive and efficient service.
Next ?
Berlin, September 2004 - Conference proceedings
Published: January 2004
Format: CD - 14 speaker presentations
The 2nd UITP Regional and Suburban Railways
Conference provided a perfect opportunity for
experts to analyse the last ten years of
development in the sector and to understand the
future trends of regional railways. Essential topics
such as contracts, infrastructure, staffing policy,
rolling stock and asset management were
addressed by key speakers. Over the past ten
years, regional and suburban railway companies
have had to face new challenges, and adapt their
organisation and strategy to remain competitive in
the face of market liberalisation. In the future they
will need to refine new business models to offer
better services to customers.
Pricing and Fare System in Regional Transport
Published: June 2005
Format: CD
In September 2003 the UITP working group
'Pricing and fare systems in regional public
transport' was set up with a view to study, compare
and develop pricing and fare systems within low
density areas. Discussion was built around key
social, political and economic aspects. It was
composed of over 15 members representing
systems in Belgium, France, Switzerland, England,
Denmark, Italy, Spain, Germany, Austria, Portugal,
and Scotland. The Chairperson of the working
group is Mr Luc De Man, Director of De Lijn, West
Vlaanderen (Belgium). The working group met five
times over a one-and-a-half year period. The
meetings provided a valuable insight into the
theme of pricing and fare systems of various
structures in Western Europe, and aided by the
UITP questionnaire on pricing in regional transport,
the working group was able to develop its
knowledge on systems in countries across the
world. This information dossier brings together the
work that has been carried out over the last yearand-a-half
in the form of articles, presentations and
have contributed, and presents the official position
deep review has been conducted by a UITP
working group of current rules and observed
practices throughout Europe. It has come to the
conclusion that the diversity in the definitions and
the structure of tender documents used to date are
inefficient and complicate the tender process. From
this basis, the UITP working group created a model
for tender harmonisation, which the operators and
organising authorities are free, though strongly
encouraged by UITP, to use when issuing future
tenders. Any move towards a better balanced
relationship between all actors in the public
transport supply chain (authorities, operators,
manufacturers) is a step in the right direction,
opening up possibilities for decreasing costs whilst
maintaining quality for all the parties involved. This
recommendation is intended for the purchase/
offering of buses and related services.
The public it addresses is therefore both the bus
manufacturing industry on the suppliers side, as
well as the bus operators or public transport
authorities on the demand side. However, although
the observed business model in Europe is different
from one market to another, any parts of the
document can be used in all types of purchase
situations.
One Small Step...
railway companies who have to implement PRM
regional and local public transport authorities who,
in most cases, define and assign these duties to
the railway companies.
Furthermore this report is meant to raise
awareness of Accessibility, not only within the two
aforementioned groups, but with the whole
spectrum, from architects to politicians, law makers
and standardisation bodies.
As always, it is important to understand the
problem and to use the correct terminology. How
can you discuss Accessibility when you have not
defined what it is? Without a common vocabulary
the discussions can be endless and even become
between public transport service providers and local
authorities - along with a close sustained dialogue
with members of the disabled community - can
ensure better accessibility to public transport. With a
focus on experience in four cities: Gothenburg
(Sweden), Grenoble (France), Prague (Czech
Republic), and Liverpool (UK), the report identifies
the critical elements of partnerships between public
authorities at different levels of government and
public transport operators.
The Challenge of Urban Mobility
Published: January 2000
Format: CD
This work is intended to fuel the debate on planning
and urban transport policies and present the
solutions provided by public transport to the
problem of urban mobility from economic, social
and environmental perspectives. The aim is not to
produce an encyclopaedia on urban and regional
transport, but a document summarising the "state
of the art". It targets public transport professionals,
officials responsible for mobility policies,
international funding bodies, universities and
sections of the media interested in mobility issues.
operators/authorities have to ask themselves in
order to help them when they face the preparation
of large events.
Public Transit Security is a key concern world-wide.
Operational security issues such as vandalism,
petty crime, fraud and staff security are costly
issues which public transit organisations of all
shapes and sizes face on a daily basis. On top of
this, recent terrorist attacks show that public transit
systems continue to be vulnerable and potentially
attractive targets for terrorists. The conference
considered how public transit organisations across
the globe address these challenges to achieve a
balance between an efficient public transit operation
and appropriate security.
Public Transport Security in Stations
Prevention, responding and recovering in the face
of terrorism
Published: October 2007
Format: CD
Recent years have seen an increase in the violence
of terrorist activities. Public transport has become a
target. Whilst preventing terrorist activities as such
is the prime responsibility of governments, the
public transport sector also has to make concerted
efforts to protect its passengers and infrastructure.
This report focuses on security planning for
stations, which are crucial network elements, as
well as gateways into and out of the public transport
networks for both passengers and emergency
response forces. It summarizes current knowledge
and suggests a series of approaches and measures
Public transport in 2020 was the main theme at 56
th UITP World Congress that took place at the
beginning of June in Rome. Over five days more
than 2100 mobility and transport professionals from
80 countries discussed, during some 50 sessions
and with 120 high level speakers, the threats and
opportunities likely to impact on public transport in
the years ahead and the solutions in urgent need of
development in order to pre-empt or accompany
this change. During this Congress, experts deeply
analysed the external trends which will affect the
sector within the next 15 years such as the energy
challenge and global warming trend, demographic
changes, urban congestion and overpopulation or
the scarcity of public funds.
