<strong>Incest</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Pardon</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Marriage</strong><br />

Life for Life: The Proposed <strong>Marriage</strong> of the Duke <strong>and</strong> Isabella<br />

Our expectation of the political rebirth of Vienna is disappo<strong>in</strong>ted,<br />

at least at first, by the counterfeit Brother's unsettl<strong>in</strong>g marriage pro-<br />

posal to the novice Sister. This proposal figures both commerce <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>cest back <strong>in</strong>to the play <strong>and</strong> suggests that if Vienna is to be delivered<br />

truly it will first have to be liberated, one way or another, from all ex-<br />

ternal restra<strong>in</strong>ts on human sexual activity.<br />

Equal marriage, <strong>in</strong> which neither the husb<strong>and</strong>'s nor the wife's right<br />

to the mutual <strong>and</strong> exclusive use of the other spouse's genitals can<br />

rightly be traded away, would seem to solve the conflict between na-<br />

ture's requirement that we generate offspr<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> law's requirement<br />

that we keep track of parentage so that <strong>in</strong>cest will not destroy the po-<br />

litical order as we know it. But Measure for Measure shows that the k<strong>in</strong>d<br />

of equality presupposed by genu<strong>in</strong>ely reciprocal marriage is uncom-<br />

fortably close to both the commensurability underly<strong>in</strong>g commercial<br />

exchange <strong>and</strong> the <strong>in</strong>terchangeability of k<strong>in</strong>ship roles <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>cest. That is,<br />

the play shows marriage to be an exchange of persons similar to the ex-<br />

changes of persons that, <strong>in</strong> the course of the play, we learn to distrust.<br />

The series of exchanges motivat<strong>in</strong>g the plot of Measure for Measure<br />

is made possible by some common measure that makes two th<strong>in</strong>gs the<br />

same for the purposes of a transaction. Commercial exchange sug-<br />

gests one such measure; sexual exchange suggests another. Money<br />

turns all human be<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>in</strong>to wares, <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>cest similarly levels the dis-<br />

t<strong>in</strong>ctions k<strong>in</strong>ship roles create among them. If marriage, the loftiest<br />

type of "life for life" <strong>in</strong> Measure for Measure, is to solve the dilemma <strong>in</strong><br />

the play, it must somehow arrest the k<strong>in</strong>ds of human exchange typi-<br />

fied by sales of human be<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>and</strong> by <strong>in</strong>cest; it must <strong>in</strong>corporate <strong>and</strong><br />

transcend such exchanges. The pr<strong>in</strong>cipal step <strong>in</strong> this process of tran-<br />

scendence, the play has led us to believe, ought to be an act of pardon,<br />

or free gift, that breaks through the cycles of exchange <strong>and</strong> rises<br />

above them.<br />

Isabella's pardon of Angelo <strong>in</strong> the fifth act appears to be such a gift.<br />

Her pardon smacks of the k<strong>in</strong>d of economic <strong>and</strong> sexual commerce<br />

that has plagued Vienna from the beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g of the play, however, for<br />

when she lends Mariana her knees, she is not so much grant<strong>in</strong>g a free<br />

pardon of Angelo as repay<strong>in</strong>g a debt to Mariana. Or, like a usurer, she<br />

is strik<strong>in</strong>g a profitable barga<strong>in</strong>-she gets a whole life <strong>in</strong> exchange for<br />

part of a body. "Lend me your knees, <strong>and</strong> all my life to come," pro-<br />

nounces Mariana, "I'll lend you all my life to do you service" (5.1.429-<br />

30). Thus her kneel<strong>in</strong>g is yet another transaction <strong>in</strong> the cycle of<br />

exchanges begun when Angelo proposed the barga<strong>in</strong> of head for
