PAINT WITH THE ENVIRONMENT IN MIND
WHAT IS THE ECHO PROGRAM?
Interlux ® and Awlgrip ® have made a commitment, as part of the overall AkzoNobel commitment,
to be a world leader in environmental issues; The Echo Program is this commitment.
WHY DO WE CARE?
Reducing our impact on the environment while continuing to supply products with superior performance
will ensure a clean, safe environment for us all to enjoy our passion for boating – now and in the future.
THE SCOPE!
The Echo Program covers everything Interlux and Awlgrip are doing as a Yacht Coatings business to
reduce our impact on the environment; our policies, the reduction targets we have set ourselves for
VOCs, biocides and factory emissions, the initiatives we have underway in our factories, warehouses,
laboratories etc. You can find the full details at echoprogram.com.
THE TARGETS
1
Volatile Organic
Compounds
(VOCs) 2
We will reduce the
average amount
of VOC emitted per
gallon of paint sold
by a minimum of
15% by 2020.
Biocides
We will continue to
supply antifoulings with 3
excellent performance,
while reducing the
average amount of
biocide emitted per
square foot coated
with antifouling per
year by 20% by 2020.
Product
Interlux and Awlgrip have identified three key areas of focus for reducing our environmental impact.
Each focus area has a clear set of defined targets which are briefly set out below. Further detail on
the focus areas and how these targets will be achieved can be found at echoprogram.com.
manufacture
and warehousing
We will reduce all
waste generated from
our facilities by at least
20% by 2015.
Did you know?
£ It is not the weight of copper or other biocides in an antifouling that determines how well it will
work! The rate at which the biocide is released is what matters and this is mainly influenced by
the types of resin used and how the product is formulated.
£ If too much biocide is used in an antifouling formulation it will simply be wasted! Our large and
experienced team of yacht antifouling chemists develop products with optimized biocide levels,
giving the boat owner the performance they want without unnecessary emissions into the
environment.
HOW DOES THIS AFFECT THE PRODUCTS?
Having identified and published our aims,
policies and targets we can now help those
customers interested in selecting products
from our range based on their relative overall
environmental impact.*
In order to ensure transparency, International
Paint LLC has developed an Environmental
Scorecard tool as a scientifically credible route
for assessing and scoring products in terms
of their environmental impact.
The Scorecard, unique and only available
to International Paint LLC and our products,
assesses the environmental impact of a
product across its entire life cycle, from raw
material sourcing to waste disposal.
Each product is assessed against 9 criteria
including solvent emissions, eco-toxicity and
climate change (full details at echoprogram.com).
The scores for each criterion are then
aggregated to give a total weighted impact
rating versus a baseline product which scores
1.0. The baseline product is the largest volume
selling product from our range in the category
being looked at (e.g. Finishes, Primers, etc.)
This score is then simply converted into an
‘Echo Rating’ as shown – the lower the rating
a product has, the lower the relative impact
on the environment.
* Impact is relative to OUR products only. No comparison can
be made to products from other suppliers.
Important Note: A product with a high Echo Rating doesn’t
automatically mean it is bad for the environment, it simply
means that it is not as good as the largest selling product
in OUR range.
Did you know?
2
£ Our US factory invested in a biotreatment
system that uses microbes
to digest carbon based solvent vapor.
Thanks to these ‘bugs’ or tiny organisms,
95% of the input is destroyed,
dramatically reducing VOC emissions.
£ In 2010 our UK production site sent
42% less non-reusable waste* to
landfill than we did in 2008.
TRANSPARENCY
Our Scorecard tool and Echo Rating system
are designed to give clarity and scientific
credibility to how Interlux assess and rank the
environmental impact of our product ranges.
Giving you, the customer, this clarity allows you
to identify the most environmentally suitable
product for you from our range.*
In an era of environmentally-friendly claims
and so called ‘green washing’ it is our mission
and goal to be as transparent and open about
environmental issues as we can. Ask yourself
this: who else gives you the facts and the tools
to allow you to choose for yourself and who
just claims to be ‘environmentally friendly’...?
We are committed to the environment
and this is our commitment to you.
WHAT ECHO RATING
A PRODUCT HAS?
The ‘Echo Rating’ of each product will
be displayed via a color coded system.
The rating for each product and more detailed
explanations of the Echo Rating allocations
can be found at echoprogram.com, ensuring
our customers have all the information they
need in order to make a considered product
choice.
*All ratings are relative to OUR largest selling product.
No comparison can be made to products from other suppliers.
