Application Data
SURFACE PREPARATION – Surface must be clean, dry, and free from old finish, wax, grease and dust. Sand area smooth,
progressing in sandpaper grit from rough to medium to fine. Use a fine grit screen for final sanding. For hardwood floors, use NOFMA
or NWFA accepted. After sanding and screening, vacuum surface to remove dust. Final wipe surface with a clean, lint free cloth.
WARNING! If you scrape, sand or remove old paint, you may release lead dust. LEAD IS TOXIC. EXPOSURE TO LEAD DUST CAN
AUSE SERIOUS ILLNESS, SUCH AS BRAIN DAMAGE, ESPECIALLY IN CHILDREN. PREGNANT WOMEN SHOULD ALSO AVOID EXPOSURE.
Wear a NIOSH-Approved respirator to control lead exposure.
Clean up carefully with a HEPA vacuum and a wet mop. Before you start, find out how to protect yourself and your family by contacting
the National Lead Information Hotline at 1-800-424- LEAD or log on to www.epa.gov/lead.
Application Conditions – Apply when air and surface temperature is between 60° and 80° F (10° and 32° C) and relative humidity is
less than 70%.
Staining Before Finishing – Oil or water-based stains may be used prior to finish application for custom coloring. Allow stain to dry
thoroughly. Test a sample area for product compatibility. If applying stain, it is not necessary to use a sanding sealer. Bulls Eye
Polyurethane may be applied directly over thoroughly dry stain.
Sealing Before Finishing – A sanding sealer may be used as an option to initially coat bare wood surface. It penetrates and seals the
wood and dries quickly. Bulls Eye SealCoat Universal Sanding Sealer is recommended because of its superior adhesion and extremely
fast dry time. Sealer must be completely dry before applying finish.
Application Methods – Stir satin and semi-gloss products before and often during use. Gloss does not require stirring. Do not shake
container or bubbles will form. Multiple containers of product should be intermixed (boxed) to ensure sheen uniformity. Apply using a
synthetic or lambs wool pad applicator, natural bristle brush, short nap roller or weighted Tbar. Apply in direction of wood grain in
smooth, level strokes. Apply thin, even coats at a rate of approximately 700 square feet per gallon. Allow product to dry 8 to 10 hours.
Note that moisture related jobsite conditions or heavy application of finish will prolong dry times. Heavy application of finish is not
recommended. After first coat has dried, abrade the surface with oscillating buffer using 120-150 grit screen or sandpaper. Vacuum
and wipe clean. Follow this procedure for successive coats. A minimum of 2 coats is recommended. Allow final coat to dry overnight
before permitting light traffic or use of surface. Finish will take 7 to 14 days to totally cure. Do not place area rugs on floor, and avoid
heavy traffic for approximately 1 week.
Refinishing a Previously Finished Floor – If existing finished wood surface or wood floor is in good condition and free from wax or
other contaminates, you may recoat without totally sanding surface to bare wood. A thorough cleaning and abrading of pre-finished
surface is required. If compatibility with the old finish is unknown, a sealer coat of Bulls Eye SealCoat Universal Sanding Sealer will
minimize potential adhesion problems.
Thinning – If thinning is necessary, add no more than 10 fl. oz. (296 ml) mineral spirits per gallon and stir thoroughly. Do not thin
product in excess of local VOC regulations.
Dry Time – In most cases Bulls Eye Oil-Base Polyurethane will dry tack-free in 6 hours and can be sanded/recoated in 8 to 10 hours.
The dry film develops full cure after 7 days. Lower temperatures, higher humidity and the addition of tint will prolong dry and cure
time.
Coverage – Approx. 700 sq. ft. (65 m²) per gallon on smooth, dense woods such as maple; 650 sq. ft. (60 m²) per gallon on porous
woods such as oak. Application losses may vary according to the porosity of the substrate and the method of application and should be
taken into account when estimating the quantity of product needed.
Cleanup – Clean up spills and drips with mineral spirits (paint thinner). If spills or drips have dried carefully remove them with a
proprietary paint remover formulated for this purpose. Clean application tools with mineral spirits immediately after use. If dried on
tools use a solvent-base brush cleaner. Follow manufacturer’s instructions when cleaning spray equipment. Dispose of unused or
unwanted product in accordance with local laws regulating solvent-based coatings.
