MEN'S BASKETBALL Suitts suspends Johnson, Washington in their "best interest" by Jay Grob Junior guards Teddy Johnson and Tyrone Washington have been suspended from the Rice basketball team for the remainder of the season. The pair will miss the Owls' remaining 10 games this season, including Wednesday's game against Arkansas, and it is unclear whether the two will return to the squad next year. In a prepared statement given Monday, coach Tommy Suitts indicated that Washington and Johnson had broken a team training rule, but did not elaborate. "Our coaching staff feels that Washington and Johnson have let the pressure of our season adversely affect their behavior," said Suitts. "As a result, they haven't been able to function in the best interest of the team. We, therefore, feel that they shouldn't continue as members of the team for the remainder of the season." Suitts concluded his statement by stating that Washington and Johnson will retain their scholarships for the remainder of the season, and will immediately begin a weight training program. "We will help them and encourage them to do well in school, and we will meet with them after the season is completed to discuss the 1983-84 school year," said Suitts. Suitts added that the frustration of an 0-7 conference record had Tyrone Washington been detrimental to the pair's relationship with their teammates. Commented Suitts, "I want to make it clear that this was no blatant violation of the rules. The decision was made in the best interest of these two young men." Johnson disagreed with Suitts, commenting, "I don't know what he (Suitts) had in mind, but all he has done is belittle us in the eyes of our peers and cast a great deal of uncertainty about us." He continued, "I thought the punishment was pretty severe. Hopefully, I'll be back next year." Freshman Ivan Petitt will replace Johnson, who had been splitting time with Washington, in the starting lineup. Johnson and Washington had been averaging 4.2 and 5.8 points per game, respectively; Washington was considered the team's premier defensive player. The suspension marks the first such penalty levied by Suitts in his two years as head coach. The last player suspended from the basketball team was senior guard Anthony DeCello, removed from the team in 1980 by former coach Mike Schuler for a violation of "team rules." The loss of Washington and Johnson leaves the Owls, now 0-8 in conference and 6-12 overall, with only 11 scholarship players. Reeling from the loss of junior guards Teddy Johnson and Tyrone Washington, and playing one of the best teams in the country, Rice picked a bad time to play its worst game of the year, as the Arkansas Razorbacks ripped the Owls 70-43. The loss dropped the Owls to 0-8 in conference play, while Arkansas stayed in second place at 7-1. Quite simply, the Owls were massacred in every aspect of this game. Rice shot a dismal 30 percent from the floor compared to Arkansas' 43 percent, and the Owls only grabbed 27 rebounds compared to the Hogs' 51. Arkansas stole the ball from Rice's inept ball-handlers ten times, although it seemed like more. In addition, the Owls out-fouled the Razorbacks 29-20. Four Hogs scored in double figures. Darrell Walker scored 14 points, 6-11 center Joe Klein :counted for 13, while Leroy Sutton and Alvin Robertson had 10 apiece. Rice guard Tracie Steele scored 13 points before fouling out. Said a dejected Tommy Suits, "I'm embarassed for our players. We're not a very good basketball team right now, but there is a difference between when we don't play well in general and what happened tonight." Indeed, Wednesday night's performance was much worse than last Saturday's game against Houston when the Owls played reasonably well before being buried by 36 points. Arkansas dominated from the opening tip to the final buzzer, and was ahead eight to nothing after only three minutes of play. Not that Rice played any better the rest of the half, but the Owls did finally manage to get the ball past midcourt a couple of times, after being victimized repeatedly by Arkansas' zone press. The onslaught continued in the second half, as Rice's poor shooting worsened. The Razorbacks gained a 30-point lead at 6:19 on John Snively's jumper. But the Owls fought back, outscoring Arkansas' scrubs in the final minutes for the 70-43 loss. Though it is painful to look at WOMEN'S BASKETBALL Rice's individual performances, the public must know. Renaldo O'Neal continued to slump, hitting only two of fifteen shots and scoring eight points. Ivan Petitt, starting his first conference game in place of Johnson, also had eight points on three of nine from the field. The freshman guard was also guilty of four turnovers. The starting forward Tony Barnett did not score. Steele was the only Owl to hit half his shots as the Arkansas native canned five of 10 attempts. In a game that everyone agreed would be better forgotten, Suitts said, "There is only one Barnhill Arena and one Arkansas. Thank heaven we don't come back for another year." Hopefully the Owls will play better tomorrow night as Rice faces Baylor in Autry Court at 7:30 p.m. Owl hot shots to return for big Baylor game by Steve Bailey Rice dropped two games on enemy turf over the weekend, an 87-57 loss to Miami and a 95-60 loss to Florida International. "I'm very pleased with our inside play of Stone and Fisher," noted head coach Linda Tucker. "Ann had two real good back-to-back games. She's getting over her shyness, and learning to position more and more each game." Fisher hit 15 of 26attempts"from the field and grabbed 19 rebounds in the two games. Stone made 13 of 30 shooting attempts and added six-for-nine from the line for 32 points. "The teams (Miami and Florida) were strong and experienced," Tucker continued. "International was ranked ninth last year (AIAW Division II) and Miami is big, strong and fast. "Our bench will have the experience they'll need when we play S WC games. We're not giving in, and by Conference time (SWC Tournament) we might upset some people. "I can never complain about people not playing. When kids are playing as hard as they can, that's all a coach can ask. If we can just eliminate our turnovers, that will make us a much better basketball team." Most Rice players had at least one good statistical game in Florida, and all signs indicate that losing will soon be pastf for the Owls. Forward Pennie Goff and post Katie Osten are scheduled to play Saturday against Baylor, and if both players are at half strength, the Cubbies will have their paws full. "I'm going to bring them (Goff and Osten) along slowly at first. This will give everyone a positive lift," said Tucker. INTRAMURALS Cinzano romps to soccer crown by Ed Swartz Cinzano easily won this year's soccer intramurals by overpowering the Buzzards 4-0 in the championship game. Cinzano's only tough game came in the first round of the playoffs against an intimidating Warriors team. The Warriors were the only team to ever score against Cinzano, but it wasn't enough to win the tight game as they bowed out 2-1. Cinzano then erased E.S. Tylenol in an 8-0 effort, after the latter received a bye the first round. The Buzzards advanced to the finals by beating W.A.T.W. 4-1 in the first round, and squeaking past a scrappy Ipswich V team 3-2 in the semifinals. College soccer Although only one game has been played so far, Baker appears to be the team to watch this year in college soccer. Baker manhandled a solid Sid Richardson team 6-1 Saturday. Before Baker scored the first goal, the game looked like it might be close with both teams showing good ball control. Wednesday league Lisa Kay Mao's Fast Break team is out in front with a 3-0 record. One win was awarded by a forfeit from The Few who evidently were too few and had to withdraw from the competititon. Dana Mischlich, Kate Moynihan and Mao sparked the scoring. Fast Foods gave Fast Break some tough competition with Leslie Neblett and Wendy Brockman pumping in all the baskets only to lose 22-30. Sex Kittens, captained by Christy Moore, are tied with Fast Foods having 1-0 records. Thursday league Good Girls and Flaming Flamingos are tied with 2-0 records. Baker's Best and White Shadow Returns are both looking for their first win. High scorers for Flaming Flamingos were Mary Ellen Trunko, who garnered 16 points against Baker's Best, and Genie Lutz scoring 14 points in the same game. Good Girls led by Naomi Logsdon's 14 point effort and assisted by 8 points from Joan Pflugrath had a 38-10 victory over Baker's Best. February 4 is the deadline for women's tennis singles, doubles and mixed doubles, and women's softball.
