to writing several technical publications for an
international maritime audience, he proved himself
an astute businessman, founding in 1859 the fi rm of
J Sedgwick & Company, “purveyor of quality liquor,
tobacco and cigars”. After his death in 1872, two of
his sons, Charles and Alfred, continued the business
which grew strongly under their leadership and in
1886 they established up a distillery at Wellington
on the banks of the Berg River.
Th e facility’s life as a whisky distillery
started 20 years ago when production of the
Th ree Ships brand was relocated there. Since
then the distillery has seen some signifi cant
upgrades and in recognition of its high level
of innovation and for the whiskies produced
here, London’s Whisky Magazine bestowed its
Icons of Whisky award on Th e James Sedgwick
Distillery as Whisky Brand Innovator of the
Year in April 2011.
