Timecare® HERITAGE 100% COTTON MUSEUM BOARD 

compact board / heritage 

Designed for conservation this Timecare® 100% Cotton Museum Board meets the highest standards 

of specification. It is laminated with EVA plasticiser-free adhesive which is more resistant to acid 

hydrolysis than normal PVA adhesives. It passes the silver tarnish test and is therefore suitable for 

all media including photographs. This board combines the utmost purity with excellent cutting and 

erasion properties. 

Surface absorption is appropriate for washline mounts because of the special sizing applied to the paper. For mounting certain types of photograph 

such as gelatine, albumen and dye transfer prints, which prefer a less alkaline environment, we offer TG Offwhite and Dull White in an 

unbuffered version of Timecare® Heritage 100% Cotton Museum Board. The standard alkaline buffered board is available in Cream, White, 

Black, Museum Cream and Warm Cream. 

The new unbuffered Dull White shade of Timecare® Heritage Museum board is designed to be a dirty dull white to blend with old photo 

albums or replace old mounts where a brighter colour would look too obviously new.

Timecare® Heritage Conservation Board is an acid and lignin-free board made from chemically 

purified woodpulp, lengthy washing removes all residues of chemicals. 

Providing a high degree of purity at an economical price, this board is suitable for all alkaline buffered board applications where a cotton fibre 

board is not essential, and is offered in special sheet sizes designed to minimise wastage in mount cutting. Cutting and washline properties are 

excellent and the board is available in six stock colours.

ARCHIVAL FOLDING PREMIER BOXBOARD 

compact board/boxboard premier 

A combination of strength and purity 

Designed to protect collections from the damage caused by handling, atmospheric 

pollution, fire and flood disasters. Boxes made from corrugated board do not offer 

this protection.This board meets the most stringent requirements of archival storage 

for convertion into folders or boxes. Archival Folding Premier Boxboard offers a 

controlled ‘mini-environment’ for books, papers, photographs and other fragile items 

adding to physical protection a slightly alkaline environment which helps to counteract 

any acidity in boxed materials. Reducible sulphur content of the board comfortably 

meets the American standard for the safe storage of photographic materials. Overall, 

the greatest care has gone into ensuring that this material meets detailed archival standards 

in terms of chemical composition whilst offering excellent folding strength and 

rigidity. The coloured outer surface of the board resists dirt, grease and abrasion, while 

the smooth white interior surface is designed to minimise abrasion of box contents 

and has passed the ANSI photographic activity test. 

Our white paper element has also been tested and approved by the British Museum for permanent use with silver, copper and lead.Supplied 

in long grain flat sheets, Archival Folding Boxboard is available in three callipers. We laminate this board in our factory and are able to offer 

other sizes and thicknesses to special order.

The waste created during laminating and boxmaking in our factory 

is used to ensure consistent quality and the finest specification of

A specification of this waste is given in our Archival Folding Boxboard literature, the basic construction being chemically purified 100% wood

ARCHIVAL FLUTED BOARD 

Premier Archival Fluted Boxboard is a corrugated board made from the same Acid and Lignin free long fibred conservation quality bleached 

Kraft paper we use in our Premier Archival Folding Boxboard. 

Because of its fluted structure, corrugated board has the advantage of being lightweight yet rigid. It is available in a variety of thicknesses, flutes 

and sheet sizes. It has many useful applications and is particularly useful for oversize boxes. It uses less paper and is therefore cheaper to produce 

than solid board and its lightweight, low-density construction means that it can be used on high-speed box making machines, which result in 

lower cost boxes. 

We use our Heritage Archival PhotoKraft papers to make the board.They meet European and American standards for Archival Long Life Papers 

and Boards. They are suitable for the long term storage and conservation of documents and photographs. These papers pass the P.A.T. Test and 

have excellent water resistance having been sized internally with AKD and externally with Starch. The high percentage of long Kraft fibres gives 

enhanced fold and tear strength to the board. See below for specifications. 

Water resistance and fibre strength is an important factor in an archival corrugated board. Our Premier Board comprises of 2 or more outer 

liners which enclose one or more fluted centres. Premier Archival Fluted Boxboard is a duplex Grey/White which means that one liner is a 

Grey colour and the other is White. The fluted core is White. The Grey colour is bleed proof and fade resistant.

pure cotton inters containing no chemicals whatsoever and because of this they are probably the purest of all photographic storage papers.

100% Cotton Archival Rag Endleaf is an exceptionally high quality paper developed primarily for conservation bookbinding, e.g. endpapers, guarding 

etc. It is manufactured from 100% cotton fibre.The paper has successfully been designed to meet the most stringent standards required by 

conservation binderies, libraries and museums. It has been made in white and cream, but other colours can be produced on request, subject to 

minimum quantity. It has a smooth wove surface, buffered with calcium carbonate and tub sized with a pure non-ionic oxidised farina starch to 

resist fibre picking when printing and to impart extra fold surface strength to the paper. The paper is specified to pass recognised silver tarnish

We are pleased to offer japanese papers from the paper source established by Naoki Sakamoto to promote traditionally made Japanese 

papers.They are of consistent quality, free of impurities such as mechanical wood pulp or iron particles caused by poor materials and drying 

methods common to cheaper Far Eastern imitations. The special properties of traditional Japanese paper in general have long been recognised 

by Western conservators: low weight, long fibre, porosity, translucence and also exceptional permanence deriving from the purity achieved in 

their manufacture. Paper Nao papers’ pH values range from 6.3 to 9.5.The Nao papers available from Arte & Memoria are made from the 

inner bark of two tree types peculiar to Japan: Kozo, a type of mulberry; Gampi and Misumata, both species of Ginchoge. Kozo pulp fibres are 

typically some three times longer than those found in traditionally made European papers. 


TEARING JAPANESE PAPER 


Because most Japanese papers are long fibred, they are strongest when torn Bibliotecas rather y than Museos cut.The best way to tear them is: 

1. Fold the paper where you want it torn. 

2. Draw a thin line of water along the fold with a brush. 

3. With one hand, hold a metal straight edge on the fold line. 

4. Lift the paper with the other hand, tearing the water weakened line up along the straight edge. 


• Kozo Fibre 

Very long fibre. Durable with its own special sheen. Most frequently used type in Japan. 

• Gampi Fibre 

Durable, thin almost transparent, excellent wet strength, lustrous surface. 

Traditional uses include gold and silver leaf productions. 

• Mitsumata Fibre 

Used particularly in smooth or soft papers, suitable for calligraphy. 

Relatively less durable than other papers. 

Mitsumata fibres are sometimes combined with others. 

APPLICATIONS 

• Twenty three of Paper Nao’s products available from Arte & Memoria are rolls produced on a unique stainless steel machine. 

These paper rolls are often preferred over handmade sheets for repairing or lining brittle machine made papers which 

have a definable grain direction. 

• Handmade Kozo Papers (K31 – 37) are all particularly suitable for conservation uses. 

• Urushikoshi K93 is the thinnest handmade Japanese paper available. 

• Mitsumata Hakuai Shi (M5) is very soft, and traditionally used for gold leaf backing and in decorative boxmaking.

art on paper. Chalk, charcoal and art mediums/text with poorly fixed surfaces (this may include some damaged photo-images) should not be 

protected directly by any Polyester Films. 

The use of Polyester is preferred by many curators because it allows visual access without requiring physical handling of the photograph or 

artifact. Polyester is an exceptional material but only in products which avoid certain issues. Inserting and removing film continues to require a 

design which permits free passage, to avoid scratching and abrasion. Polyester enclosed films must be stored in an area with reasonable climate 

control to avoid the possibility of ferrotyping. Ferrotyping is the result of condensation and can occur when fluctuating relative humidity exceeds 

65%. Stable high humidity generally will not cause condensation, so in using polyester for this purpose monitor changes at the higher levels. 

The frosting or matt finish on certain polyesters is an inorganic physical abrasive permanently embedded into the surface which will abrade 

both film base and emulsion. This type of material should only be used if single sided . The matt surface should be on the outside of any storage 

pocket and must not be in contact with the negative or print. Melinex Type O, Type 401, Mylar Type D or Melinex Type 516. 


• These polyesters are considered the safest of all archival plastics for film enclosures 

• Melinex 401 is available in cut sheets and are suitable for welding using the our Sealing 

Machine and Ultra Sonic Welders. 

• Melinex Type O and Melinex Type 401 are also available in rolls Other plastics can be 

safe but should be accompanied by detailed specifications and established test results 

to ensure that high quality virgin material is used in their manufacture.

Spunbonded olefin material , inert, gas-permeable, non abrasive , and water and dust proof, making it ideal for a variety of artifact storage and

Can be made with any type of material (papers, board, synthetic supports, etc) and can be made at any size and design. Most common for document 

protection are of single crease and made with 80 g acid free paper for bigger sizes we use thick papers 315 gr, 500gr or board when we make big 

folders per maps or posters there are also specific folders or envelopes manufactured to preserve different materials like glass plate. film negative, 

postcars.... . 

In addition to our standard envelopes and folders we offer a custom made design and production service. We can assist in desing and welcome the 

opportunity to quote on any special requirements. 

100% COTTON FOUR FLAP ENVELOPES 

Four Flap Enclosures are seamless and adhesive free for the storage of photographic glass plates. These envelopes 

are available in most common glass plate sizes. Photographic glass plates can be safely stored with no 

risk of pressure marks and can also be viewed, without being removed from their protective coating, by just 

unfolding the flaps and leaving the plateuntouched, safely on a flat surface eg. a light box. The same enclosures 

can also be used for the storage of film negatives or prints.

Die cut storage boxes made from our Premier Grade Grey/White Archive Board which is made to a detailed specification designed to give 

a safe storage environment for all types of archive material including photographs. The board is low in reducible sulphur and other oxidising 

elements, free from optical brightening agents, and is laminated with a specially produced pH 7 plasticiser free EVA adhesive. Lightfast, 5 to 6 on 

the blue wool scale, the paper is buffered with calcium carbonate and has an average pH value of 7.5 to 8.5. Our boxes are unique because the 

board for each box is specially laminated prior to the die cutting process. Die cutting when the board is still damp from laminating means that 

the board does not crack. Other boxes where the board is laminated and stored prior to being die cut are prone to cracking.

This is a three part system for storing 35mm, 120mm and 6 x 9 cm format roll film negatives. 

Negatives are stored in Polyester sleeves which offer easy access without scratching.

alpha-cellulose stock folders designed to incorporate insert tab and double scored flat

materials used in their construction. They are all designed to take four hole punched paper or a variety of polyester album sheets, for the safe 

storage and display of negatives, prints, postcards and ephemera. 

• THE Timecare® MUSEUM BOX 

This box is the top of the range offering maximum protection for the storage of especially sensitive material, such as photographic negatives, 

where the safest possible micro climate is called for. It is constructed using high quality acid free conservation board. Fully specified for photographic 

applications, this board contains less than 5 parts per million reducible sulphur and passes the ANSI PH 1.35 Photographic Activity 

Test.The box is covered in high quality black library buckram which is moisture and vermin resistant and extremely hard wearing. It is also the 

sturdiest of the three boxes because of the slightly thicker and more compressed board used in its manufacture.

TAKO-BAKE 

A small, thick-bodied brush made form hard deer hair. Used for brushing work in detail areas. 

Originally used by traditional Japanese Kite artists. The name comes from the Japanese word for kite, 

“tako”.The brush was used for painting black whiskers on the kite face.The thick body of the brush is

A specially formulated Neutral pH, Non Plasticised, Reversible Archival Paper Laminating Adhesive. 

Now available in small quantities.The adhesive was originally specified by Stuart Welch 

and designed by a leading adhesive chemist for laminating our Timecare Heritage Museum 

Boards, Conservation Boards and Premier Archival Die Cut Boxes and Envelopes. 

In 1983 Stuart found that there was no thoroughly specified laminating adhesive which took 

into account questions of pH, plasticisers, fungicides and acid hydrolysis. With the guidance 

of the late Fred Marsh and in conjunction with the adhesive chemist, it was decided that an 

EVA type adhesive best fulfilled the requirements of conservation with the practicalities of 

laminating. 

The adhesive is designed to be as safe as possible for all kinds of storage uses including photographs. It has passed the Silver Tarnish Test and is 

less susceptible to acid hydrolysis than the more common PVA adhesives which can break down and emit Acetic Acid Vapours. These vapours 

can be particularly harmful to boxed items trapped in a microclimate.The resistance to hydrolysis of the EVACON-RTM is probably due to the 

random blocks of ethylene which affect the stereochemistry of the system. 

The incorporation of a small quantity of calcium carbonate also helps to stabilise the system. EVACON-RTM adhesive, is a Water Soluble, Non 

Plasticised, pH 7.5, Ethylene - Vinylacetate Copolymer Emulsion suitable for laminating papers and boards, boxmaking, envelopes and general 

bookbinding work.

Book Support System designed by Christopher Clarkson to cater for books with a wide variety of structural variations. Thesystem is used in 

institutions throughout the world. The book support is built up from lightweight units of synthetic foam.Synthetic foam allows a book’s uneven 

board surfaces — even with bosses and side pins, to be equally supported over theirentire exterior surface.The particular density of foam was 

chosen for the important non-slip characteristic required and the greycolour was found preferable for a library environment.The concept of 

related units has dictated the use of generalised anglesand dimensions in the design. Simplicity and ease of storage — impossible to achievewith

A heat seal adhesive developed by Gustav A. Berger of New York which is widely used for the lining of oil paintings, heat seal facings and the 

making of laminates with fibreglass etc. BEVA 371 is non-aqueous and is dissolved in non-polar petroleum ractions known to be harmless to 

most paint films. It is applied cold. It causes no contractions, expansion or softening of the materials to which it is applied making its application 

possible on even the most delicate surfaces. Shrinking and distortion is minimal. Heat sealing can be done days or weeks after application. Since 

BEVA 371 is completly dry at room temperature, it is easy to reassemble fragments and secure them in the right position with a tacking iron. 

BEVA 371 was specially formulated to have an activation temperature of 65-70° which was considered best for the themoplastic treatment of 

old, distorted paint films and cellulose tissues.At this temperature old paint films usually become quite soft and can be bent to be brought back 

into intimate contact with the supporting fabric.At 65°C BEVA 371 becomes as tacky as a contact adhesive at room temperature.A firm bond 

can be achieved almost instantly and with minimal pressure so that even the most delicate textures do not suffer. 

BEVA 371 does not have to be adhered and is viscous at activation temperature, the smallest fragments can be put together atleisure without 

danger of soiling them. BEVA 371 is reversible and errors can be easily corrected even after heat sealing. It is easy to remove and can be remelted 

whenever needed. BEVA 371 has only limited solubility at room temperature though it absorbs solvents and forms gels which no longer 

adhere to the bonded materials. These gels permit removal without staining. A large proportion of low molecular substances with high melting 

points have been incorporated in the formulation, they make it fairly rigid and free from cold flow at room temperature.These qualities enable 

BEVA 371 to keep the painting straight after lining and to provide a film bond for facings.The large proportion of low molecular substances in 

the formulation enables it to maintain low viscosity when used hot or dissolved in harmless petroleum fractions. This makes impregnation and 

consolidation of paint layers and canvas possible at every stage of the lining process and afterwards if needed. BEVA 371 can be applied by 

brush, paint roller or spray without impregnation of solvents. It is possible to lower the heat sealing temperature by using BEVA 371 films half 

dry or moistened with sprayed on petroleum fractions.

CULMINAL® methyl cellulose derivatives are cellulose ethers which when dissolved in water, offer a variety of functional properties. CULMI- 

NAL® products are granular powders and are used as thickeners, protective colloids, stabilisers, suspending aids and water-retention agents in 

many industrial applications. CULMINAL® is easily soluble in cold water though not soluble in hot water. CULMINAL® is a non-ionic cellulose 

ether and is compatible with many surfactants and polymers such as starch, guar and alginates. Solutions of CULMINAL® are pseudoplastic, 

with some solutions showing thixotropy.The solution viscosity is a function of the temperature; as the latter increases viscosity decreases.When 

reaching the gel temperature gelling and flocculation of the polymer will occur. This process is reversible upon cooling. Viscosity is nearly independent 

of the pH over a wide range. CULMINAL cellulose ethers have many functional properties, such as water retention, thickening and 

stabilizing action, binding ability, adhesion, protective colloid, suspension effect and emulsion stabilisation and film formation. Detailed information 

on the physical and chemical properties of CULMINAL® methylcellulose derivatives are given in Booklet 22.001, which is available on request. 

According to the EC legislation on dangerous substances and preparations CULMINAL products are not hazardous. Further data on the safety 

aspects of CULMINAL MC are available from Safety Data Sheet 21,283.

Is a granular dry powder wallpaper adhesive soluble in water. Available in 1kg and 25kg bags and 5kg tubs. A 25 kilo bag is sufficient to make 

1300 litres of paste.The recommended concentration is 1.925% and a 25 kg bag should be sufficient to stick 1400 rolls of light weight paper. 

For blown vinyl papers it is recommended that the concentration be increased to 2.27 % which will make 1100 litres of paste and would stick
