Lakeview Cemetery Diagram - Town of Wayland

Wayland Board of Public Works, acting also as the
Cemetery Commissioners according to Town Bylaws,
have established these rules as a guide to
proper use of Town Cemeteries. These rules may be
adjusted by the Commissioners, as necessary, to
carry out their duties. The Commissioners stand
ready at all times, to answer all questions regarding
these established rules.
General Rules
1. Town cemeteries are open from 7:15 am until
sunset.
2. Visitors must respect the solemnity of the
cemeteries at all times.
3. Alcoholic beverages, firearms, and dogs are
prohibited in all town cemeteries.
4. The following activities are prohibited in all
town cemeteries: rollerblading, skateboarding, the
use of mini-bikes, horseback riding, solicitation of
any kind, the sale of any items, instructing persons
in the use and operation of a motor vehicle.
5. The Cemetery Commission shall make
reasonable efforts to protect all trees, flowers,
shrubs, commemorative memorials and other
property. However, the Cemetery Commission is
not responsible for the protection or replacement
of any property or landscape.
6. Only residents or former residents of the Town
of Wayland, Massachusetts, shall be entitled to
purchase a lot or single grave.
7. Any lot owner who wishes to assure burial
privileges to a specific individual, must notify the
Cemetery Commission in writing. This documentation
must be signed, dated, and notarized.
8. No lot (or portion of a lot) may be sold or divided,
without first obtaining written permission from the
Cemetery Commissioners.
9. The cost of “Perpetual Care” is included in the
total price of lot sales. Perpetual care covers all lot
and grave surface maintenance, such as mowing the
grass, or removing leaves. It does not include the
maintenance of markers, monuments, flowers,
shrubs, or any other plants.
10. Cemetery lots shall not be used for any purpose
other than as burial sites for human remains.
11. No lot owner shall allow the remains of any
person to be deposited within the bounds of his or
her lot, for profit.
12. No tomb, mausoleum, crypt, or other structure
(intended for above ground interment), may be
constructed within the bounds of town cemeteries,
without written approval from the Cemetery
Commission Director.
13. No trees or shrubs within all cemetery bounds
may be cut down, destroyed, or altered. Lot
owners who desire any landscaping changes must
first obtain written approval from the Cemetery
Commission. The Commission reserves the right
to make any landscaping changes as they feel
necessary, for the overall improvement and safety of
town cemeteries.
All deeded lots give access to the cemetery, and
convey the right to use cemetery roadways, where
consistent with the other rules contained herein.
All motor vehicles are required to stay within the
designated paths marked on the town’s cemetery
diagrams.

Traffic Rules
1. The speed limit in town cemeteries is five (5)
miles per hour.
2. Horses are specifically prohibited from town
cemeteries, unless they are part of a funeral cortege
or authorized activity.
3. All pedestrians have the right-of-way. Additionally,
motor vehicles must yield to funeral
processions.
4. Any person who causes damage with a motor
vehicle in town cemeteries, shall be held liable for
the cost of damages.
Glossary of Terms
LOT - Land area is assigned a numbered division,
according to the town cemetery record card, and
may consist of one (1) or more graves.
GRAVE - Area within a lot, that is of sufficient size
to accommodate one full size interment and/or up
to six (6) cremated remains.
INTERMENT - The permanent disposition of a
deceased person's remains, through burial.
CREMATION - The technical process by which
human remains are reduced to bone fragments.
DEED - The original conveyance document
provided by the Cemetery Commission to the
original lot purchaser.
MEMORIAL - Includes any monument and/or
marker, used for identification on a cemetery lot.
MONUMENT - Includes any tombstone or
memorial consisting of granite or marble, which
shall extend above the surface of the ground.
MARKER - A memorial flush with the ground,
usually located at a grave site.

The Town of Wayland Cemetery Commission
has the right to expel from the grounds, and
issue an arrest warrant for anyone who violates
these rules and regulations. The Commission
shall have charge over all town cemetery grounds
and buildings, including the conduct of
funerals, traffic, employees, lot owners, and
