Welcome to the Truro College Sports Academies Guide.
This will give you an idea of some of the activities we have
on offer and what the Academies involve. The College
is one of the newest and most innovative colleges in
the country. For a large percentage of young people in
Cornwall, Truro College is their first choice. The College
is able to offer purpose-built facilities with resources of
an exceptionally high standard not least of which are the
sports facilities.
All players wanting to join an Academy
will firstly be registered on a full-time
programme of study. This might be
a vocational course such as a BTEC
Level 3 Extended Diploma or an A
Level programme. The flexibility of
the Academy programme enables
students to access as much as
possible without interfering with their
academic studies.
It is important to understand that all
students will have the opportunity
to compete for places in any teams
fielded by the College. Players of
all levels will be considered as most
Academies cater for recreational
players through to elite performers.
Each of the Academies offer players
the chance to develop both their
team and individual skill together with
personal strength and conditioning and
an understanding of nutrition, training
and game analysis. Most players will
have up to ten hours per week of
specific sport related activities which
will include theory sessions, coaching,
fitness sessions, skills work and
matches.
The facilities include the Lynher
building, which opened in 2006. It is
the perfect centre for sports activity as
it provides a Multi Use Games Area
(MUGA), Resistance Training Area,
an exercise physiology laboratory
comprising analysing equipment and
sport testing resources as well as
classrooms and study spaces. It is
surrounded by purpose built sports
pitches including a floodlit astro turf
pitch. The newest addition to the sport
facilities is the Gannel Building - a
purpose built indoor cricket facility,
which is home to the Cornwall Cricket
Centre. It provides an all year training
facility along with analysis labs and
meeting rooms. There is also a
swimming pool on campus which the
Council runs.
I look forward to meeting you and
welcoming you to our department.
