Welcome to the Truro College Sports Academies Guide.
This will give you an idea of some of the activities we have
on offer and what the Academies involve. The College
is one of the newest and most innovative colleges in
the country. For a large percentage of young people in
Cornwall, Truro College is their first choice. The College
is able to offer purpose-built facilities with resources of
an exceptionally high standard not least of which are the
sports facilities.
All players wanting to join an Academy
will firstly be registered on a full-time
programme of study. This might be
a vocational course such as a BTEC
Level 3 Extended Diploma or an A
Level programme. The flexibility of
the Academy programme enables
students to access as much as
possible without interfering with their
academic studies.
It is important to understand that all
students will have the opportunity
to compete for places in any teams
fielded by the College. Players of
all levels will be considered as most
Academies cater for recreational
players through to elite performers.
Each of the Academies offer players
the chance to develop both their
team and individual skill together with
personal strength and conditioning and
an understanding of nutrition, training
and game analysis. Most players will
have up to ten hours per week of
specific sport related activities which
will include theory sessions, coaching,
fitness sessions, skills work and
matches.
The facilities include the Lynher
building, which opened in 2006. It is
the perfect centre for sports activity as
it provides a Multi Use Games Area
(MUGA), Resistance Training Area,
an exercise physiology laboratory
comprising analysing equipment and
sport testing resources as well as
classrooms and study spaces. It is
surrounded by purpose built sports
pitches including a floodlit astro turf
pitch. The newest addition to the sport
facilities is the Gannel Building - a
purpose built indoor cricket facility,
which is home to the Cornwall Cricket
Centre. It provides an all year training
facility along with analysis labs and
meeting rooms. There is also a
swimming pool on campus which the
Council runs.
I look forward to meeting you and
welcoming you to our department.
As part of the British Colleges Sport
(BCS) organisation performers will
be given the opportunity to represent
the South West region and England
Colleges in a variety of sports. The
highlight of the year is the annual
BCS National Championships held
at Bath University. Within the South
West Region, Truro College are strong
BasketBall
Basketball Academy
Enthusiasm and a commitment to improve are the only entry requirements for the Basketball
Academy.
Players may have up to ten hours a week of training and playing matches. We compete in the
British Colleges National Championships, British Colleges Cup, British Colleges League and
ESBBA Cup, as well as in the men’s county league. Three male teams and one female team
will be run to accommodate players of all standards.
Players are also educated on how to referee and table officiate, and are encouraged to
participate in EBBA Coaching qualifications.
Truro College’s Academy aims to not only provide training for enthusiastic basketballers,
but also to improve the standards of play, understanding, and officiating – to enable players
to make that step into playing League Basketball, either in the county or higher at National
League Level, or representative honours.
CriCket
Cricket Academy
Players need to be of a good club standard or county level and have a strong desire to
improve.
There will be up to ten hours of training, playing and practising per week. Coaching and
training sessions will take place in the new Cornwall Indoor Cricket Centre – a world class
facility and the most modern in the UK with 5 lanes of nets, 5 new bowling machines,
advanced video technology and a superb floor.
There is a very strong fixture list and during the year players will also have the opportunity to
train as umpires and coaches within the England and Wales Cricket Board structure. Annual
trips to the ECB Academy at Loughborough, First Class Academies and overseas trips also
take place.
Players will also receive theory sessions on mental, technical and tactical sessions and
undergo some lifestyle management training.
We are hoping to produce high quality players who will have the opportunity to maximise their
talents. There are currently several players showing the potential to play first class cricket and
we have close links with Somerset, Gloucestershire and Nottinghamshire academies.
elite
Elite Academy
This provides the opportunity for sports men and women from a range of sports including
Athletics, Surfing and Triathlon to receive specialist fitness/conditioning advice to
supplement the specific training and coaching they receive outside the college. Athletes are
required to be of at least county/regional standard to apply for this programme.
Training programmes will be produced where necessary in conjunction with relevant
coaches and athletes will be encouraged to train with each other depending on their fitness
requirements. There will be a specialist running coach to work with athletes and crosscountry
runners. Past successes of the Elite Academy include gold medals at the BCS
National Championships in Cross-country, International representation in Judo and a host of
county and regional athletes.
There will be three sessions a week that target specific training needs and an opportunity
for an open circuit training session one day a week that will target a variety of fitness
requirements.
This year Truro College has established a competitive Surfing Academy. The academy has
two elements to it which cater for all levels of ability. The recreational element caters for all
those people who just want to surf and learn to surf. We have two qualified coaches within
the College who will be on hand to teach beginners and guide them through their first steps
of surfing. Sessions will be held on a Wednesday afternoon.
The competitive element of the Academy aims to push and develop competitive surfers with
the use of regular competitions, internal competitions, video analysis, specific fitness training
sessions and high-level guest coaching. The College team is BSA registered to allow our
athletes access to high-level UKPST competitions as well as School and BCS competitions.
Expedition Academy
Launched this year after two successful years of Ten Tors training and participation. The
Expedition Academy provides the opportunity for students from throughout the College to
participate in Expedition Training, for both the Ten Tors Challenge and Duke of Edinburgh
Award Scheme.
The training will be at a standard enabling selection for the Ten Tors Challenge, and
participation in the Shelterbox Challenge (covering 30 miles in teams of four, on Dartmoor
over two days). We have been very successful within both the Ten Tors and the Shelterbox
Challenge over the past years, with teams completing the 45 and 55 mile Challenge and
finishing second out of 38 teams competing in the Shelterbox Challenge.
Students are not required to have any previous navigation or expedition skills as theory and
practical training are given throughout the training year.
Football Development Programme
The programme was devised in order to allow students to achieve their full potential in football
performance, as well as developing an extended knowledge of the game. We anticipate that the
programme will make a significant contribution to the development of 16-19 football within the
county. The introduction of a women’s team has also helped to expand the programme.
There are openings for players of all standards to become the best they can be. The first team
attracts players of county trial’s standard or better, however all students can compete for places
in every team. Those who want to play football to a recreational standard only are also welcome,
the Development Programme is for all levels.
Players will have up to ten hours per week of football related activities, which will include theory
sessions, coaching, fitness sessions, skills work and matches.
Progression in the Football Development Programme may lead to careers in Playing, Officiating,
Administration, Sports Therapy, Coaching (home and abroad) or Media.
Footballers aiming for the top of the game can work with top UEFA - A and B licensed coaches
and the best facilities without ever leaving Cornwall. Ex Aston Villa, European Cup winner and
Scottish international Allan Evans fronts Truro College’s coaching staff assisted by goal keeping
specialist Kevin Miller.
There are opportunities to enhance possible
future employment within Football by achieving:
• NVQ Level 2 in Football
• FA Assistant Club Coach Award
• FA Level 1 Club Coach Award
• FA Emergency Aid Course
• FA Basic Treatment and Management of
Injury Course
Truro College is developing a proud sporting
pedigree with increasing representation at
the British Colleges National Championships.
The College enters all major ESFA and
British Colleges competitions and is currently
British South West Colleges League and Cup
Champions and National Cup runner up.
Women’s Football Academy
Players will have up to ten hours per week of football related activities, which will include theory
sessions, coaching, fitness sessions, skills work and matches.
The College has completed a major new sports facility and the Academy is aiming to be the
development centre for Women’s football in Cornwall. It has already established links with the
Centre of Excellence and links are being made with several premiership clubs.
Women’s football has seen a rapid growth in recent years and a 49% growth in the past year.
At present there are over 3,500 teams and 45,000 girls aged U16 playing. The FA is proud to
boast that football is now the top female sport in England. Women’s Football has been present
at Truro College for many years. Mick Gale has been appointed as the Academy Director and
has established links with several premiership clubs.
The programme was devised for students to achieve their own potential in football performance
as well as related knowledge of the game and to heighten awareness of Cornish football. We
anticipate that the development programme will make a significant contribution to 16-19 football
within the county.
There are openings for players of all standards to become the best they can be, but a certain
level of commitment is expected from all players. Those who want to play football to a
recreational standard only are also welcome; the Academy Programme is for all levels.
Golf Academy
This year Truro College is proud to announce the launch of the new Golf Academy.
The Academy is looking to recruit single handicap players (initially) and those of county
standard or higher.
The Academy will support talented and gifted players and stretch those wishing
to pursue county level. Students will work on swing and biomechanical analysis,
short game development, fitness and psychology. Home and away fixtures will run
throughout the season in conjunction with the collegiate tour and national events.
Within the Academy we strive for excellence and enjoyment whilst adhering to the
etiquette of the game at all times. This Academy has been built on the ethos set out
by the Royal and Ancient (R&A) and all players will develop their knowledge of the
rules and regulations of the game and will be encouraged to undertake coaching
qualifications.
This year the college team have managed a successful top five finish in the BCS
championships held at St Andrews and are looking forward to next year’s fixtures.
The resident professional for the Academy is Jonathan Lamb formerly of Woburn Golf
Club (Buckinghamshire). Jonathan’s experience includes extensive competitive play
and diverse coaching methods used with golfers under his tuition.
The College Representative is David
Cousins, formerly Secretary to the
Shropshire and Hereford Junior Golf
Association. He has held many amateur
championship titles throughout Scotland
and the West Midlands.
HOCkey
Hockey Development Squad
Normally players will be of club or county trialist standard. Enthusiastic non club players
are welcome.
Players will have up to ten hours per week of Hockey related activities which will include
theory sessions, coaching, fitness sessions, skills work and matches. Coaching and
umpiring courses will be offered.
The College enters a range of league and cup competitions and they are currently the
British College league winners, they were finalists in the British Colleges Cup and are
County Champions in the outdoor and indoor competitions.
All players coming to Truro College who want to play hockey but do not want to join the
Academy group will be most welcome to do so.
There is a great depth of talent and enthusiasm for hockey in Cornwall. Students of both
genders play in schools and clubs, but this talent often goes undeveloped in the shadow
of other major sports. The Academy aims to nurture established players and identify
new talent. This initiative provides players with the opportunity of a first class education
coupled with top class hockey coaching.
Leadership Academy
If you are looking to continue or start leading or volunteering in sport we hope to provide you
with the opportunity and support to do so.
Students will be given the chance to develop their leadership skills in a sport of their choice,
coach and assist in as many sessions as possible and will be supported and mentored by
Academy staff.
Below are details of some of the activities that our elite leaders have been involved in over
the past year.
Dominic Edwards has been volunteering for over a year now and has gained his Level 1
football qualification and now has 50 hours logged over the past three months coaching
football. He recently attended a leadership coaching course in Taunton and has great self
motivation. His motivation has led him to start volunteering on Carrick Leisure’s programme
of holiday activities and this summer he has worked with Carrick Leisure and Cornwall
Football Association.
Josh Wright has been volunteering at Roseland Mountain Biking Club on Saturday mornings
for the past six months. He has been a great help to the club and at the same time has
ridden some great trials around Cornwall. Through his commitment and dedication he has
gained a free place on a Mountain Leader’s Award Level 1 and 2.
Paris Waller has continued to excel with his leadership. During this year he has been on the
FA Step into Sport programme which saw him coaching at Wendron Football Club where he
has worked within the youth programme as well as providing analytical support to the first
team.
Netball Academy
All students are welcome and we provide quality coaching for players of all levels.
All we ask is a commitment to the programme.
Our aim is to field three squads. We encourage players who have been involved in the
county development programme to join and would encourage all players to play club
netball outside of college. We also cater for players who have not had the opportunity to
be involved in the county programme. We are proud that many players have progressed
from 3rd team status to 1st team over the two-year programme.
Players have the opportunity of ten hours netball related activities including work on
skills, tactics, fitness, match play, and match analysis. The Academy is supportive, with
a friendly atmosphere where everyone is valued regardless of experience or ability.
Students are also encouraged to be involved in coaching and umpiring opportunities,
gaining awards along the way. In recent years the students have run a Little League for
pupils from local primary schools during the summer term, which all have found most
rewarding. We also work with local comprehensive schools providing education for their
Gifted and Talented netball players.
The Academy is strongly linked to Cornwall Netball’s development programme. Many
players who have been coached in the county’s Academies choose to attend Truro
College to continue their netball education. Cornwall’s Talent and Performance centre is
based at the college and many of the players have progressed into the College Netball
Academy. The Academy aims to nurture established players and identify new talent
providing players with quality coaching and opportunities whilst pursuing a first class
education.
The College has been recognised by Netball Southwest for the work it does to promote
netball. It has been given NSW Talent and Performance Status, one of only three
institutions in the region to receive this accolade.
The Academy currently has one England U19 player who also represents Team Bath
National Talent League Squad. Other talented players have represented South West
Colleges this season. Alongside the Academy programme selected students can follow
the NVQ Advanced Apprenticeship in Sporting Excellence (AASE), a course designed
particularly for students who wish to pursue a career in sport. Once again Truro College
is a pioneer in introducing this course and one of only two establishments piloting the
Apprenticeship in Netball. One student who has just completed this course is currently
on a placement in Australia as an assistant coach in a school in Melbourne.
Rugby Academy
in partnership with SW England Rugby Academy and Exeter Chiefs
In recent seasons the Cornwall RFU has been very successful in developing players in the
under 16 age groups. These players at post-16 have been faced with difficult choices. Often
they have left the county to continue with their rugby and their education. This joint initiative
between Truro College and SWERA (South West England Rugby Academy), in conjunction
with Exeter Chiefs, provides players with the opportunity of a first class education coupled
with first class Rugby Coaching, whilst staying in Cornwall.
Players will have ten hours per week of rugby related activities, which will include theory
sessions, coaching, video analysis, fitness sessions, skills work and weight training. An
extensive fixture list is played all over the Country at U18 and U19 levels.
Selected students will also be given the opportunity to follow the NVQ Advanced
Loughborough University, South West Colleges League champions and Colleges League
champions. The highlight of the academy has been winning the 2009 Daily Mail Cup
at Twickenham. Over 500 teams entered the cup with Truro College Rugby beating St
Normally swimmers will be of club or county standard. All enthusiastic swimmers keen to
develop their level of performance are welcome.
Truro College has been extremely successful in the development of its Academies. We have a
newly developed Swimming Academy, helping individual swimmers from across the county. The
Academy aims to develop the swimmers, focusing on technique and dry side training. We will
introduce swimmers to new forms of training, such as strength and conditioning and technique
analysis.
We have links with a large number of colleges and universities across the country and are
already part of British Colleges Sport. We also make full use of Truro Leisure Centre hosting a
number of home galas, building links with other clubs and colleges.
Student Profiles
Kim Davey started playing tag rugby at school and joined the College Academy
alongside her A level studies. She very quickly developed into a consistent
performer and was an invaluable player within the College team. She was
selected to represent the South West Colleges and England colleges’ teams
and then progressed through the talent development group to be selected to
play for England U20’s. After leaving college to study at St Mary’s, Twickenham
she has continued to develop and should be a player to watch out for in the full
England squad in the near future.
Taylor Williams is currently following an A level programme. He has played Cricket for Notts 2nd XI
and is part of their Academy programme. He was the youngest ever player to represent Cornwall Minor
County Team and is currently playing for Cornwall U21, having played for the county throughout the
age groups. He is quoted as saying that the Academy here at Truro College “has given me the chance
to practise daily in high class facilities and is the ideal opportunity to help me move onto the next level
and hopefully a professional contract”.
Becky Cantin joined Truro College from Wadebridge School
in order to follow the BTEC National Diploma in Sports
Performance and Excellence and develop her Netball
further through the Netball Academy. She is also studying
the Netball Advanced Apprenticeship in Sporting Excellence
(AASE) which is designed to develop skills that focus on
a career in sport. Becky has had a very successful career
in Netball since the age of 13 when she was part of the
Cornwall Development. As her skills developed she rose to
the England U17 Squad, acting as Vice Captain and she is
currently playing in the England U19 Squad and the Team
Bath Youth Squad.
Malcolm Hearn is currently studying a National Diploma in Sports
Performance and Excellence, along with an Advanced Apprenticeship in
Sporting Excellence in Rugby (AASE). His long term aim is to obtain a
professional contract on completion of his studies. He has represented
England Under 16s and Under 18s and is currently in training for the
forthcoming Six Nations Tournament. He has also played for the South
West region and local clubs at Redruth and Helston. Malcolm was
instrumental in the College’s success at Twickenham when they won the
Daily Mail Cup Final in 2009.
