grade conversion rebuild of Bowater’s<br />

PM 4 at Calhoun, TN. The equipment optimally<br />

meets our requirements and the<br />

<strong>Voith</strong> commissioning personnel was very<br />

knowledgeable. The start-up went very<br />

well, and we have already been able to<br />

run the machine at speeds and production<br />

rates exceeding the guaranteed values.<br />

Initial sheet quality parameters look good<br />

and we continue to get very positive<br />

feedback from customers regarding the<br />

quality of our paper.”<br />

In addition to the PM rebuild, Bowater<br />

also invested in a new bleaching<br />

plant.<br />

Stock preparation<br />

In order to handle production <strong>for</strong> the<br />

new hybrid paper grade, extensive<br />

upgrades were necessary to the<br />

stock preparation line <strong>for</strong> conversion<br />

to low consistency. These upgrades<br />

included new <strong>Voith</strong> MSA and MSS<br />

screens, new MultiSorters type MSM<br />

and a MultiDeflaker DF. For lowest<br />

gas content and, there<strong>for</strong>e, best<br />

paper quality, a new <strong>Voith</strong>Vac de-<br />

aeration system was installed in the<br />

new Low Consistency line.<br />

Wet end and press section<br />

The wet end upgrade of the paper<br />

machine included replacement of the<br />

Beloit Concept III Converflo headbox<br />

with a state-of-the-art <strong>Voith</strong> Master-<br />

Jet II F headbox with ModuleJet dilution<br />

water technology.<br />

The existing Beloit Bel<strong>for</strong>m top <strong>for</strong>mer<br />

was replaced with <strong>Voith</strong>’s well-proven<br />

DuoFormer D. In addition, new foil<br />

boxes, a new TriVac suction box as<br />

well as new ceramic bars were<br />

installed in the <strong>for</strong>ming table. With<br />

these changes, almost all elements in<br />

contact with the suspension/paper<br />

have been replaced.<br />

The press section configuration was<br />

optimized <strong>for</strong> shorter draws and improved<br />

runnability. The granite roll<br />

was replaced with a modern ceramic<br />

roll. These modifications were de-<br />
