DIRECTIONS FOR USE
USE RESTRICTION: Do not install CobraRods in wood which is
submerged or at a waterline i.e. not for use in marine or fresh water pilings.
CobraRods are for Remedial treatment of Utility Pole Structures
dimensional lumber (round stock, square stock). For protection of non-food
contact wood against fungal decay and insects. CobraRods can be used
for most wood species.
CobraRods are effective against some kinds of termites. The Cobra TM
Rod is to be inserted in wood with permanent or periodical moisture content
above the fibre saturation point (25%-30%) etc. The rate of application for
Cobra TM Rods is dependent upon the volume of wood to be treated. The
recommended load is up to 6 kg Boric Acid per cu. metre of wood
depending upon requirements for treatment. The loading should not be less
than 2 kg of Boric Acid per cu. metre of wood. Rods contain 1.45 times
equivalent Boric Acid (BAE).
For inserting the Rods, the three step process is as follows:
1. Drill 12.5mm holes to accommodate the rod size needed.
2. Insert the correct size and quantity of Cobra TM Rods needed into the predrilled
holes (determined from area to be treated.) Leave enough headroom
to accommodate a 1/16" oversize plug. Never hammer the Cobra TM Rod
during installation.
3. The headspace should have a 1.5mm oversized plug hammered into the
pole.
Inspections can be carried out every 3-8 years for Industrial wood
structures. If reuseable plugs are used new rods may be inserted into
existing holes during the reinspection process and the same plugs tapped
back into place. The angle at which the rods are installed is accomplished
by using a drill guide at the groundline zone. This will ensure the rods are
placed in the most advantageous location for best diffusion results. The
sapwood and heartwood interface in the outer shell is the best area,
ensuring chemical loads are sufficient to provide adequate decay protection.
If the wood is decayed sufficiently to cause diminished strength properties
beyond functional requirements, DO NOT install Cobra TM Rods. Be careful
during installation to not cause unacceptable structural damage to the wood
during installation of rods.
Note: Boring pattern selected shall comply with the Canadian Electrical
Association Publication 118-D-318A, 1990, "Development of an Application
Guide for the Use of Vapam" or if an alternative boring pattern is to be used,
the applicator must receive written confirmation from the owner(s) of the
pole stating that the selected boring pattern is acceptable and will not result
in significant pole strength loss. Bore hole diameter shall not exceed
12.5mm when treating poles with CobraRods.
Rates: Apply to achieve a loading of 6 kg of Boric Acid per m 3 of wood in
the treated zone. An average per pole will be approximately 0.144kg of
CobraRod.
The distance between the CobraRods should be a maximum 20-25 cm in
the zone to be protected.
DIRECTIONS FOR USE:
IMPEL (BORON) RODS are recommended for pre-treatment and remedial protection of non-food contact wood and wood products against decay and insects.
IMPEL is not effective against termites.
The IMPEL (BORON) ROD is to be used in lumber with a permanent or periodical moisture content above the fibre saturation point (30%), e.g. window frames, bottom sill members or logs.
The IMPEL (BORON) ROD is inserted in a drilled hole, 9.5-20mm. The hole is covered by a cap (plug). Never hammer the IMPEL (BORON) ROD during installation. By using a plastic cap
it is possible to carry out inspections, e.g. in conjunction with the maintenance of the surface treatment. If the IMPEL (BORON) ROD has dissolved, the timber has been subjected to a
moisture content above the fibre saturation point, and a new IMPEL (BORON) ROD can be inserted in the hole.
When the wood is dry, painting, or any other type of surface coating may be applied if desired. The remedial treatment is carried out at positions particularly susceptible to decay, e.g. end
grain, joints etc. In placing of the IMPEL (BORON) RODS use caution not to cause structural damage to window or casement etc.
The distance between the IMPEL (BORON) RODS should be 20 - 25cm in the zone to be protected.
PRECAUTIONS
DIRECTIONS FOR USE
IMPEL® (BORON) RODS II for Remedial treatment of Utility Pole
Structures are recommended for protection of non-food contact wood,
against decay and insects. IMPEL® (BORON) RODS II can be used for all
kinds of wood species.
IMPEL® (BORON) RODS II are not effective against all kinds of termites.
The IMPEL® (BORON) RODS II are to be used inside in wood with a
permanent or periodical moisture content above the fibre saturation point
(30%) for Poles, etc. The rate of application for IMPEL® (BORON) RODS
II is dependent upon the volume of wood to be treated. The recommended
load is up to 6 kg of Boric Acid per cu. metre of wood depending upon
requirements for treatment. The loading should not be less than 2 kg of
Boric Acid per cu. metre of wood. IMPEL® (BORON) RODS II contain
1.45 times equivalent Boric Acid (BAE).
For inserting the Rods, the three step process is as follows:
1. Drill 12.5mm holes to accommodate the rod size needed.
2. Insert the correct size and quantity of IMPEL® (BORON) RODS II
needed into the pre-drilled holes (determined from area to be treated).
3. The holes are covered by caps (plugs). Never hammer the IMPEL®
(BORON) RODS II during installation.
By using plastic or wood caps it is possible to carry out inspections perhaps
in conjunction with the regular maintenance maybe every 5-8 years. If the
rods have dissolved, new IMPEL® (BORON) RODS II are inserted into the
holes. The remedial treatment is carried out at positions particularly
susceptible to decay such as around groundline or other sensitive positions.
In placing of the IMPEL® (BORON) RODS II use caution not to cause
structural damage to the wood. If the pole is condemned, do not treat with
IMPEL® (BORON) RODS II.
RECOMMENDED
DRILLING PATTERN
Groundline
Spiral pole
drilling geometry
Note: Boring pattern selected shall comply
with the Canadian Electrical Association
Vapam” or if an alternative boring pattern is to
be used, the applicator must receive written
confirmation from the owner(s) of the pole
stating that the selected boring pattern is
acceptable and will not result in significant
pole strength loss. Bore hole diameter shall not
exceed 12.5mm when treating poles with
IMPEL® (BORON) RODS II.
Rates: Apply to achieve a loading of 6 kg of
Boric Acid per m 3
of wood. An average per
pole will be approximately 0.144kg of
IMPEL® (BORON) RODS II.
The distance between the IMPEL® (BORON) RODS II should be 20 - 25cm
in the zone to be protected.
PRECAUTIONS
May be harmful, avoid contact with eyes and skin, avoid breathing dust, use
only in a well ventilated area, wear freshly laundered clothes daily, store and
wash all protective clothing separately from household laundry, wash
clothes in detergent and hot water before reuse. May be fatal if swallowed.
PRODUCT INFORMATION
GUARDSMAN POST & POLE FUMIGANT is a fumigant solution. When used as directed, it will arrest internal decay and control insects present in poles, pilings and similar large exterior timber members.
During this sterilization of the treated area, a fungi-toxic residue is deposited in the cells of wood. Poles known to have internal decay should be scheduled for treatment before they have decayed to the
point where replacement is necessary.
PRODUCT LIMITATIONS: To be used only in the remedial treatment of utility poles, and piling, and outdoor construction timbers (bridges).
TREATED WOOD LIMITATIONS: GUARDSMAN POST & POLE FUMIGANT should only be used for treatment of wood having NO opportunities for: 1. direct contact with, or becoming a deleterious
component of drinking water; 2. use in residential construction, food/feed storage/production or animal housing and playground equipment; 3. prolonged skin contact.
DIRECTIONS FOR USE
APPLICATION METHOD
When a pole is detected with rot or insect damage, dig the soil away from the base of the pole to a depth of 30 cm. Drill 15 mm holes in each quarter of the pole at ground line. These holes should be a 45
degrees angle downward and to a depth equal to or slightly greater than the radius of the pole. Inject equal amounts of Guardsman Post & Pole Fumigant into all holes using a total of 600 mL per pole. In
severely diseased poles use 1.2 L per pole. Plug the holes with treated wood plugs, taking the precautions of wearing safety goggles to avoid splashing any of the liquid Guardsman Post & Pole Fumigant
into the eyes. When the Guardsman Post & Pole Fumigant treatment is for the control of insects, the pole should be wrapped over the treated area with 120 cm laminated kraft paper. Staple and seal the
seam and top edge with 2.5 cm masking tape. FOR THE CONTROL OF DECAY IN POLES. NO WRAPPINGS IS NECESSARY. Backfill and tamp the excavated area to form a seal against the kraft paper.
The kraft paper should be removed and disposed of, when convenient, after 2 months.
PROHIBITIONS
Do not contaminate water, food, or feed by storage or disposal. Open dumping is prohibited.
STORAGE
Keep container tightly closed when not in use. Do not store near seeds, fertilizers or foodstuffs. Protect from temperatures below -17deg Product crystalizes at lower temperatures. Warm or store at higher
temperatures and mix to redissolve crystal and assure uniformity before use. Do not warm above 30 deg C.
10. STABILITY AND REACTIVITY
Chemical Stability: Stable.
Hazardous Polymerization: Will not occur.
Conditions to Avoid: Metam Sodium decomposes, when diluted with water, to methyl isothiocyanate (MITC, a
lachrymator and moderate poison) and/or to hydrogen sulfide (a highly poisonous gas). It can also decompose to carbon
disulfide and monomethylamine (both highly flammable) if contacted with strong acid. Use the solution promptly after
mixing. Do not allow the sodium to stand. As originally packaged, it is stable under normal conditions for up to 2 years.
Materials to Avoid: Additional water and strong aqueous acids. Corrosive to copper, brass, and zinc and may soften and
or discolour iron.
Hazardous Decomposition Products: Toxic fumes. Methyl isothiocyanate (MITC). Hydrogen sulfide. Oxides of nitrogen.
Additional Information:
If treated with strong acids, fumes of carbon disulfide and monomethylamine will be given off.
11. TOXICOLOGICAL INFORMATION
Eye Contact: Causes moderate eye irritation.
Additional Information: As a result of use of the product, applicators and other persons present in the area of the
application can be exposed to MITC and/or hydrogen sulfide. These chemicals can be evolved as gases from the soil of
an application. MITC has a horseradish like odor and can be very irritating to the eyes. Hydrogen sulfide has a rotten egg
odor and can be very offensive. The nose becomes deadened to a hydrogen sulfide odor, so not being able to detect the
odor any longer does not mean the exposure has ended. Over exposure to MITC may result in strong skin and eye
irritation, running nose, dizziness, cramps, nausea, vomiting and mild to severe irritation to the mucous membranes. In
addition, laboratoy studies hav eshown that exposure to the active ingredient, followed by ingestion of alcohol, may cause
an adverse reaction, including low blood pressure, rapid hear beat, and flushing of the skin. Consumption of alcohol during
and after exposure to this product should be avoided.
