Limelight in Full Force in Mississauga! Written by MAC Youth Program Coordinator, Heather Brissenden 18 Limelight is on a roll! Our Association of Young Artists is growing and gaining momentum day by day. Celebrating the themes of education and collaboration, Limelight has been dedicated to empowering young artists with the tools necessary to achieve their dreams. We have been very fortunate to have been welcomed with open arms by numerous companies, groups and artists from our fair city. Heather Brissenden It’s clear that Limelight plays an important role in our community and we are here to stay! Over the past year and a half, Limelight has performed for thousands, set-up over 35 unique collaborations and attracted new members from all disciplines including visual art, literary art, media arts and performing arts. We’ve had an awesome year and we are looking forward to an even bigger and brighter year in 2013! In a nutshell, here are a few of the programs which we produced over the past few months: -New Year’s Eve Block Party (performing to an estimated 30,000 at Celebration Square). The event included an Open Mic, interactive mural painting activity and live mainstage performances by the Sheldon DeSouza Drum and Dance Collective and I Rock With The ONE; -Limelight Magazine; -Anti-bullying Open Mic in collaboration with Whole Foods Market Square One; -Black History Month Open Mic in Malton featuring poet. Kofi Sankofa; -Artist Empowerment Workshop with Canadian Playwright, Darren Anthony; -Grant Writing Workshop featuring the Ontario Arts Council; -Urban Dance Workshop featuring the Gadfl y Dance Company at the Living Arts Centre. In the midst of all of these exciting endeavours, our Limelight Committee has been meeting on a monthly basis. With the help of our excellent sponsor, Boston Pizza Square One, we are fortunate to eat delicious hot pizza at every meeting. Thank you BP! Our former Limelight Chair, Jeff Pike has stepped down from the Limelight Committee and we wish him all the best in his future endeavours. We are happy to welcome our new members Stoo-ie and singer/songwriter Sarah-Jean Villa to the committee. Welcome aboard! So with the promise of spring comes the fresh and uplifting theme of growth and change. We look forward to an active season complete with the following programs which we encourage you to take part: -Rebel 2013 Talent Show presented for National Youth Arts Week. Business Opportunities for Artists Written by Limelight Committee member, Arlene Paculan As an emerging artist, I’m sure you are developing your craft and are very eager to get a “big break” or that “lucky shot.” For most people starting out, it’s common to think that things are going to be easy, because the hard work is usually not exposed. Perfect example: a lot of people believe Justin Bieber’s success was overnight. Just simply put videos on YouTube, that’s what you’re thinking right? Everything worth doing requires WORK. Nothing happens overnight. There was work put behind Bieber’s success. For those of you who don’t know, he’s been practicing his craft since he was very little. You need to PRACTICE and PROMOTE your craft. Main things needed are: work, contacts, VISION and DESIRE. Among those things, here are some things I’ve used to get me to where I am so far. I’ve still got a long way to go. Ideas and Tips in Starting Out into the ‘BIZ’ of your Art form: *Research the places/festivals/opportunities that your artform is recognized- Booking your own gigs! For example, if you’re a painter, you can research different festivals where those painters show their work. Contact them to fi nd out how you can submit your artwork. If you’re in music, fi nd out what shows or festivals are coming up. Google is perfect for that. Attend the shows and see what the vibe is like. You’re bound to meet people who are either fans or in the industry. *Tip: If you don’t get a hold of them right away, or if they haven’t responded in a while, don’t fret! FOLLOW UP with them. Chances are they have other eager applicants they are dealing with. *Find out who your infl uences are performing for and where they’re performing at! As artists, we’re infl uenced by so many people who creating the same kind of art we are. If a particular singer or band has infl uenced your music, or you have often been compared to them, fi nd out where they are playing and who they are playing to. Chances are you may share the same fanbase as them. One thing I learned is to fi nd out the market you’re gearing your artwork towards and fi nd out how to get them to hear or see your stuff. *Tip: If you have the opportunity to contact those people you look up to, CONTACT THEM! But not to a point where it can be unhealthy. Mainly state that you look up to them and are looking for their mentorship and guidance. *Market yourself! Be your own commercial. Yes, as Canadians, most of us would rather not talk about ourselves. Or maybe it’s just me. However, when you market yourself, make sure you do so in a professional manner. Industry people will automatically be turned off if you present yourself as arrogant or pushy. *Tip: Treat people the way you want to be treated and be the kind of person you would want to work with. *Network! Network, network, network. It’s important knowing the right people who can lead you to more of the right people. You never know who you’re going to meet, so remember to be kind to everyone. The industries are small and word can get around if you’re not at your best behaviour. *Tip: Have business cards at ALL times. *Create opportunities for yourself! Often times, artists become stagnant and less motivated when their work is not being recognized by other organizations, events, or festivals etc... So what I’ve come up with is: Hey, if someone doesn’t give you a break, you might as well give yourself one. Create a show that will showcase your work and your colleagues work. Create a fi lm that you can be the lead actor in. Create a documentary that you can point and shoot yourself. Create a concert where you decide where you play and who will play with you. Once you create opportunities for yourself and for others, people will start to see that you’re working on your art and that you’re going that extra mile. When your show or fi lm or event is complete, you’ll feel empowered to continue to create more! *Tip: If you are the one organizing the event (or fi lm etc..), make sure you COMMUNICATE with them. And have people on your team who have the same vision as you. *Remain POSITIVE! You are going to be hit with the word ‘no’ many times, and you have to accept that it is something you can’t control. What you have to accept is that you CAN control your attitude about it and your future. ‘No’ doesn’t mean for you to stop. Your desire should be so great that you keep driving through those ‘no’s and keep heading towards your vision. I believe that we are not only creators of our own craft, but we are creators of the biggest and most beautiful creation: our own life. The more you create opportunities for yourself, the more you can get your name out there. *Tip: Keep you head up and a big smile on your face and in your heart.
