The new AQUA <strong>3000</strong> <strong>open</strong> water management system provides a wide range of<br />

automatic water control options even at the fittings level – such as thermal<br />

disinfection, hygiene flushing and peak-load optimisation – thus offering optimum<br />

hygiene and economy.<br />

Managing water intelligently<br />

The new AQUA <strong>3000</strong> <strong>open</strong> water management system is based on an innovative<br />

platform of electronics. Due to its state of the art architecture, installers and operators<br />

will find that the system is now considerably easier, operationally more reliable, more<br />

functional, hygienic, economical and even easier to incorporate into host networks than<br />

previous generations of water management systems.<br />

AQUA <strong>3000</strong> <strong>open</strong>, the third generation intelligent water management system is now<br />

subdivided into two levels – fittings and network – which communicate with each other<br />

via standardised data technology. The most important water delivery functions are<br />

controlled at the fittings level. The network level, with its' PC and software, provides<br />

additional functionalities and system expansions.<br />

At the fittings level, an intelligent electronic module provides a wide range of control<br />

functions such as time-scheduled hygiene flushing, thermal disinfection, peak-load<br />

optimisation and saving of system settings. By combining the system with the ECC<br />

(ECC = Ethernet-Can-Coupler) function controller, additional supplementary functions<br />

are enabled: automatic thermal disinfection for groups of fittings, shut-off for cleaning,<br />

individual hygiene flushings, day/night/holiday programs and data recording on an<br />

optional SD card module. At the network level, innovative software provides the system<br />

with facilities to centrally control and manage any number of sanitary fittings.<br />

With its intelligent, electronically controlled water delivery functions, the AQUA <strong>3000</strong><br />

<strong>open</strong> system can be used wherever hygiene, user convenience and economical operation<br />

are of prime importance.<br />

Electronic module optimises water delivery functions<br />

The intelligent electronic module is the core of this new development. Even at the<br />

fittings level it combines water delivery and control functions that are independent of a<br />

host control unit or a network control system.<br />

The factory-programmed electronics module enables easy plug-and-play commissioning<br />

of the fittings. The electronic module integrated in each fitting is provided with a<br />

fitting ID that has a function program for all water delivery functions relevant to the<br />

particular field of application. Additionally, a fixed serial ID assignment provides a<br />

unique serial number for other overriding control functions such as special disinfection<br />

programs.<br />

Switching program modes:<br />

All fittings are provided with 2 alternative control programs<br />

(water delivery functions) backed up in the electronic module. To<br />

select the different modes, e.g. day/night, school/association,<br />

paid/unpaid water delivery, classes/holidays, stadium/<br />

intermission, room occupied/vacant etc., the respective<br />

programs can be switched via an ECC function controller or the<br />

service software.<br />

Peak load optimizations:<br />

The peak-load optimization programs are backed up in the<br />

electronic modules and can be activated with the system<br />

software. The program for a user-dependent reduction of the<br />

flow-duration controls water delivery as a function of the


frequency of usage of the fitting. The higher the frequency of<br />

usage, the shorter the water-flow duration will be made in a total<br />

of 4 steps. When a large number of fittings are used at the same<br />

time (for example during intermissions at theatres or stadiums) it<br />

is also possible to have time-shifted water flow, so called<br />

suppressed concurrency.<br />

Automatic hygiene flushing:<br />

Three control functions specific to the facility can called up with<br />

the hygiene flushing programs backed up in the electronic<br />

modules:<br />

- Automatic hygiene flushing within a fixed interval is performed<br />

for the fitting (factory programmed to a 24 hour cycle).<br />

- Dynamic hygiene flushes are performed after a<br />

fixed period of time after the fitting was last used.<br />

- Temperature-controlled hygiene flushes are performed in<br />

conjunction with optional temperature sensors via cold<br />

and/or hot water temperature control.<br />

The different types of hygiene flushes are initiated by means of<br />

the system software.<br />

Thermal disinfection programs:<br />

The most important parameters (treatment time within the<br />

circulation, water flow duration, temperature control) of the<br />

thermal disinfection process are backed up in the electronic<br />

module of each individual fitting. The temperature protocols are<br />

stored there as well. The disinfection measure is started via the<br />

ECC function controller or a PC. Operators can choose between<br />

a dynamic temperature-controlled program or a time-scheduled<br />

disinfection program. Furthermore, the optional water delivery at<br />

the last fitting in the circuit ensures the speedy flow of hot water<br />

through the circulation pipe, and the thermal disinfection can be<br />

performed in a time efficient manner.<br />

Safety shut-off:<br />

In the event that a fitting is actuated while a thermal disinfection<br />

is being conducted, the TD program is interrupted<br />

immediately.<br />

In the same way, the safety shut-off also intervenes to switch off<br />

water flow when, for example, the system is used improperly.<br />

Statistics functions and temperature protocols:<br />

Each actuation of a fitting is counted, also the time since the last<br />

hygiene flush and the last thermal disinfection.<br />

The electronic module has 3 protocol memories, cold drinking<br />

water (DW), hot drinking water (HDW) and thermal disinfection<br />

(TD) for controlling the water temperatures, provided that the<br />

fitting is equipped with the optional temperature sensors on the<br />

hot and cold water side.<br />

The temperatures measured during the last 90 minutes (DW and<br />

HDW) are saved in one-minute intervals. During thermal<br />

disinfection the temperatures are stored at 10-second intervals<br />

for 20 minutes. The ECC function controller, which also serves<br />

as a power supply, can read these data and store them on an SD<br />

card module or it can serve directly as an interface to the PC or<br />

the computer-aided facility management system.<br />

When fittings are connected to the ECC function controller via<br />

the system cable, this function controller takes over as a power<br />

supply and also provides data communication within the CAN<br />

island network. The multi-functional unit also offers the choice of<br />

an emergency power supply as well as programs for thermal<br />

disinfections, hygiene flushing, program-mode switching and<br />

shut-off for cleaning.<br />

Communication via Ethernet:<br />

The ECC function controller has an advanced Ethernet communication<br />

interface for connecting to a PC or a computer aided<br />

facility management (CAFM). As a data network technology for<br />

local data networks, Ethernet today represents the largest<br />

standardised communication platform worldwide.<br />

System connection for fittings:<br />

Two system cables can be connected to the ECC function<br />

controller for providing power and data communication, with a<br />

total length of up to 200 metres and a total number of 32<br />

fittings.<br />

Power supply function:<br />

The ECC has an integrated power supply unit providing<br />

24 V DC / 2.5 A. All fittings connected to the ECC function<br />

controller are powered via this supply unit.<br />

Emergency power supply:<br />

When a separate emergency power supply unit (lead gel<br />

accumulator with automatic charge control and an output of<br />

24 V DC / 3.2 Ah) is connected to the input provided on the<br />

ECC function controller, an uninterrupted power supply is<br />

assured in the event that the mains supply fails.<br />

Shut-down for cleaning:<br />

A contact input on the ECC function controller can be used to<br />

deactivate the fittings within an island group of fittings for the<br />

duration of a cleaning process. This deactivation will take place<br />

for a fixed period of time (automatic reactivation after a certain<br />

time) or when a contact pulse triggers reactivation, for example<br />

by means of a key switch.<br />

Switching program modes:<br />

An integrated contact input on the ECC function controller can<br />

be used to toggle between the program alternatives backed up<br />

on the fitting (e.g. day/night, school/after-school, paid/unpaid<br />

water delivery, classes/holidays, stadium/intermission, room<br />

occupied/vacant ...) e.g. via a timer and/or a key switch. Time<br />

and usage-dependent control functions can be called up with<br />

this facility.<br />

Hygiene flushes:<br />

The control programs for the 3 different types of hygiene flushes<br />

(fixed, dynamic and temperature controlled) are backed up in the<br />

electronic module and need to be activated via the system<br />

software. Additionally, the ECC function controller provides a<br />

fixed-value control program via which customised flushing can<br />

be performed. The function is triggered via a floating contact at<br />

the input of the ECC, e.g. via a separate switch. To prevent a<br />

high level of simultaneity, hygiene flushing for individual fittings<br />

is performed consecutively.<br />

Program processes in thermal disinfection (TD):<br />

The ECC function controller starts, controls and checks thermal<br />

disinfection processes in 7 phases:<br />

1. Start signal via external input contact or Ethernet<br />

2. Heat up hot water tank in conjunction with electronic<br />

module for drinking-water heater<br />

3. Hot water enabled in conjunction with electronic<br />

module for circulation line<br />

4. Thermal treatment of circulation line<br />

5. Thermal treatment of fitting<br />

7. System reset to normal operation<br />

Data storage via SD card module:<br />

An SD card module can be connected to the ECC function controller<br />

to save data externally.<br />

The intelligent fitting technology and the <strong>open</strong> system structure of AQUA <strong>3000</strong> <strong>open</strong><br />

facilitates customised water delivery functions and ready adaptation or expansion to accommodate<br />

facility-specific conditions.<br />

Levels of Communication<br />

The newly developed AQUA <strong>3000</strong> <strong>open</strong> system software makes it considerably easier<br />

to operate the system. Any number of electronic sanitary fittings can be centrally controlled<br />

and managed via a PC connected to the optionally installed network level. It is<br />

the first sanitary fittings system that facilitates worldwide <strong>open</strong> communication via a<br />

standard Ethernet connection (10/100 Mbit). With the AQUA <strong>3000</strong> <strong>open</strong> system it is<br />

possible to connect any sanitary room to an industry standard Ethernet system, thus<br />

facilitating access via the intranet or Internet.<br />

The system is controlled via the AQUA <strong>3000</strong> <strong>open</strong> system software. However, due to<br />

the <strong>open</strong> architecture of the programming and the Ethernet data structure, the water<br />

management system can also be connected to different systems within the<br />

computer aided facility management (CAFM) technology. The system adaptations that<br />

may be necessary for this must be provided by the client.<br />

The ECC function controller serves as the transfer point into the Ethernet. The corresponding<br />

island networks are controlled via CAN Bus technology. The serial CAN-Bus<br />

system (Controller Area Network) provides a speedy, reliable and cost-efficient system<br />

for networking fittings. The network incorporates several peer-to-peer control units<br />

(Bus participants) linked to each other to provide fast data transmission.<br />

The CAN-Bus system was developed in 1983 by Bosch and is designed to network<br />

control units in automobiles to reduce the amount of cables in cable harnesses and<br />

to minimise weight. CAN Bus systems are used particularly in safety-relevant environments,<br />

where a high level of data reliability is required (automation, medicine,<br />

aircraft technology).<br />

The AQUA <strong>3000</strong> <strong>open</strong> system software facilitates fitting based parameter setting and<br />

status monitoring for all system components working in a group with an ECC<br />

function controller. These island networks are mapped out in fittings overviews. With<br />

its easy to use touch operation interface, the software offers a large number of control<br />

functions.<br />

Besides being able to set media-flow durations (water, soap, air, etc.) as well as<br />

communication parameters, it is possible to perform and record hygiene flushes and<br />

thermal disinfections. With the help of virtual island fittings (all fittings that are connected<br />

to an ECC function controller), which can be grouped, shifted and reassigned,<br />

the software uses a PC to map out the entire real-life sanitary system. Additionally,<br />

the AQUA <strong>3000</strong> <strong>open</strong> system software provides a large number of recording functions,<br />

such as recording and saving temperatures (hot and cold), usage and function statistics<br />

as well as event protocols (alarms).<br />

The network overview shows all the ECC<br />

system. Within this overview it is possible<br />

to select an ECC island network and<br />

display it as a fittings overview. Within<br />

the fittings overview the user can read<br />

the operating status of every sanitary<br />

fitting, e.g. temperature, mode of<br />

operation as well as the condition of all<br />

connected sensors and actuators. At the<br />

fittings level it is also possible to<br />

configure thermal disinfection processes.<br />

An automatic overview is generated for<br />

each fitting; this overview displays all<br />

parameters that are necessary for<br />

operation. Thus the fittings function – e.g.<br />

shower with Piezo button – is shown with<br />

an easy to understand pictogram.<br />

The individual basic settings can be used<br />

to set each fitting optimally for its specific<br />

application. Thus, for example, hygiene<br />

flushing can be configured in many<br />

different ways. Besides peak-load<br />

also possible to set thermal disinfection<br />

parameters such as treatment time and<br />

treatment temperature for each individual<br />

fitting.<br />

The statistics display of each fitting<br />

shows all numerical values (e.g. number<br />

of times that a solenoid valve was<br />

triggered), operating hours, temperature<br />

changes as well as the time lapsed since<br />

the last hygiene flush. Also status<br />

information relating to the last thermal<br />

disinfection. When automatic long-term<br />

data saving is activated, for each day and<br />

each fitting the system displays a graphic<br />

showing the course of temperature and<br />

the frequency of usage across the entire<br />

day.<br />

Building-optimised planning and examples of installations<br />

In institutional applications, demands for economy, user convenience and hygiene for<br />

sanitary facilities are continually growing. Shower areas are increasingly the focal point<br />

of consideration with respect to possible sources of infection from the drinking-water<br />

system. Methods of thermal disinfection have emerged as being the recognised,<br />

state-of-the-art means of preventing such infection. In bus-networked fitting systems,<br />

hygiene requirements can be ideally complied with.<br />

AQUA <strong>3000</strong> <strong>open</strong> presents itself as a flexible sanitary system that is adapted to the<br />

individual needs of specific application conditions; its components can be set up from<br />

a building-block system. The type and structure of a building define the conditions of<br />

application and the type of usage. Application examples and system representations<br />

provide a basis for detailed embodiments and sample installations of AQUA <strong>3000</strong> <strong>open</strong>.<br />

The fittings are simply installed in series<br />

along a system line providing a 24 V DC<br />

power supply. Due to power consumption<br />

and the line lengths involved, in this<br />

installation type the number of fittings<br />

With the help of a separately installed<br />

lines. This assembly consists of a special<br />

One method of performing thermal<br />

disinfections (TD) on mixed-water<br />

systems is to incorporate a 3-way valve.<br />

While performing this method of thermal<br />

disinfection, high-temperature water is<br />

supplied to the hot and cold water inlet<br />

sides of the mixed water facility; this<br />

water then flows directly into the mixed<br />

water line to flush the fittings. Thermal<br />

disinfection is started via the ECC function<br />

controller, which controls the<br />

3-way valve via an electronic module<br />

As easy as possible – as flexible as necessary<br />

The AQUA <strong>3000</strong> <strong>open</strong> system is based on the principle of a clear and simple system<br />

architecture. To accomplish this, only those components are used that are actually<br />

necessary for the specific application requirements. An optimised water management<br />

system can be accomplished with just a few system components.<br />

The main components of AQUA <strong>3000</strong> <strong>open</strong> are the fitting units; with their intelligent<br />

electronic modules these components can completely independently provide all the<br />

basic functions necessary for water control. A system is expanded to a network with<br />

the components of the system cable and its connections, an ECC function controller,<br />

and the operating software for controlling and monitoring the overall system. Additional<br />

system electronic modules for hygiene flushing and for incorporating drinking-water<br />

heaters for thermal disinfection supplement the system.<br />
