Future/ Networking Plan
During the past three years of my study program I had the chance to meet and work with many
different people from different surroundings. Everybody could contribute on their own kind of
way, but always of high quality. That is how I started broaden my network and keep in contact
with friends and colleagues on a regular basis. It is always of great benefit for both parties to
exchange experience and knowledge about projects and companies. As a student of Stenden
University you learn and especially see how important it is to network your way up to good
chances.
To my biggest networking areas I would count LinkedIn, Stenden University, BMW Group
colleagues, Facebook and of course my family and friends and their friends.
Social networks are nowadays the most important platforms to connect with people worldwide.
I benefit a lot from Facebook because it allows me to stay in contact with friends even in New
Zealand, share some pinnacle moments with my family in Italy and get up-to-date information
about interesting topics such as bands and brands. LinkedIn on the other hand, helps me to build
and maintain my acquaintances in business life. It is an ideal platform to get information about
job vacancies, interesting discussions and simply inspiration and job opportunities. Stenden
University allows me to work on projects with companies and social organizations as well as
visiting Networking events and international conferences to get an insight of it and develop
further skills. Maintaining contact with my BMW Group colleagues is very beneficial because I
can always get updates about job opportunities in the department I did my internship in the
past. On the other hand I can offer them my help when it comes to really rough times. It is
important to keep a balanced degree of giving and taking.
Networking does not depend on the quantity of the contacts but on the quality of it. It is of great
importance to cultivate and intensify as well as getting in touch and relate to them. This will
benefit much more in the future and I can be sure that I will get more benefits out of it. For the
future this is what I want to focus on. I would like to do something for my contacts and
colleagues on Facebook and LinkedIn as well as for my family and friends. Either recommending
a company or an article or maybe introduce two of my contacts to each other for a collaboration
or because they simply have the same interests.
Though, there is also a downside of networking on social platforms which everybody should
take care of. It happened quite often in the past that privacy settings went wrong and this led to
transparency of the own profile. Those vulnerabilities in social networks allow the
reconstruction of the entire CV and private life. This is not just a threat for the private life of
every individual, but can also have a negative impact on the own reputation, especially because
nowadays it is more common that recruiters do research on their candidates on the Internet. Of
course I will not stop networking on social platforms, but with more prudence on what
information about myself is actually really important and what I can add during a face-to-face
conversation for a further stun-effect.

Self - Study Section
All worked out exercises can be found in the appendix. In the following the all other written
exercises can be found.
Self Study 3b
Exercise 4
Doing business is all about being successful. The most important part are the financial results.
Those results are obviously influenced by certain costs, which depend on the city or country a
company is doing their business. In the following, London and Beijing are being compared.
The factors to consider are the most essential costs, like costs for accommodation or renting an
office to have a place to do business. To stay one night in a five star hotel has almost the same
costs in both of the cities, even though Beijing is a little cheaper. As opposed to this fact, the
monthly rent for an apartment in Beijing is twice as high as in London.
One square meter of office space in Beijing, therefore, costs one tenth of the price a company
would have to pay in London. The wage for a bilingual secretary, who could work for the
company in this office in Beijing is 25% of the wage for a secretary in London. As this secretary
would do a five minute local phone call, the costs in London would be approx. 30% higher than
in Beijing.
Exercise 6
At meetings with Chinese, the leader of your group will be expected to enter first and will
generally be offered a seat beside the most senior Chinese person present. This person will
usually chair the meeting and act as a host. At the beginning of the meeting, all the people
present will greet each other and swap business cards, after which a period of small talk begins.
The host will then officially start the proceedings with a brief introduction to the Chinese
enterprise. The visiting team is then invited to speak. It is appropriate at this point for the
foreign participants to make their case and answer questions. Following the meeting, the
Chinese enterprise will probably arrange a special dinner for the overseas guests along with
other entertainment such as sightseeing. The guests should always accept these invitations as a
small talk in a social setting is essential for forging relationships with the Chinese.
Self Study 4b
Exercise 1
Self Study 5b
Exercise 5
When a company has a vacancy and wants to recruit a new employee, the headhunter sets up a
shortlist with possible candidates. Headhunters apply certain methods while looking searching
for people to be recruited, e.g. collecting information from the CVs of people, who still have a job.
They have an overview over the skills, qualities and performance of the person, who might fit to
the job description of the recruiting company.

A company, who wants to recruit new employees, can make appointments with agencies to find
candidates from a special sector of industry.
Self Study 6b
Exercise 2
The developments of the number of employees arises to be antithetic for the companies
Mustermann AG and Svensson AB. Starting in 1996, Mustermann had about 230 employees,
whereas Svensson only had 175. Already in 1997, the number of employees working for
Mustermann fell to 200. Svensson stayed with the same number of employees. In 1998, both of
the companies where employing the same number of people, namely approximately 180. This
meant a decresing number of employees for Mustermann and an increase for Svensson. At this
particular time, the relationship between the employment number of the companies was turned.
In the next two years, Mustermann managed to recover from the steadily decreasing number of
employees and reached a number of 190 in 2000. Svenssons staff increased continuously and
developed from 195 employees in 1999 to 215 in 2000.
Self Study 8a
Exercise 4
As competitors on the market of person computers and technical devices, Apple Computer Inc.
and the Microsoft Corporation are compared in the following.
The developments in this sector are really fast, so the description is going to be focused on the
time from July to November in 1999. Starting with share price of 90$ and even increasing to
100$, Microsoft decreased to less than 80$ by the end of August. By the middle of September,
Microsoft managed to reach a shared price slightly higher than 90$ and stayed at this level until
the beginning of October. Considering numerous ups and downs, Microsoft ended up with a
share price of 90$ by the end of November.
Apple started with a share price of 45$, but made its way up to almost 80$ by the end of
September. After a short decrease to 60$ by the beginning of October, the share price of Apple
steadily increased and reached 100$ at the end of November.
All in all, Apple managed to get ahead of Microsoft by the beginning of November.
Self Study 8b
Exercise 4
The percentage of workforce, which is unemployed divers from country to country. In the
following, the unemployment in Germany and Italy between 1993 and 1998 is compared and
described.
In 1993, Germany had about 8,5% unemployment. This percentage increased during the year
and in the first months of 1994 until nearly 10%. After a slight decrease to 9% by the end of
1994, the percentage increased steadily up to approx. 12% by the end of 1997, which is the peak
level for the German unemployment, shown in this chart. By the end of 1998, the unemployment
percentage decreases to 10,5%.

In Italy, the unemployment starts at 9% at the beginning of 1993. The percentage decreases
regularly at the middle of the years. Nevertheless, the number percentage itself grows until it
reaches its peak level of more than 12% by the end of 1998.

A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. Start an action list. (See examples on page 2 of
your booklet.)
Think about the gap between what your career is like now and how you would like for it to be. Think of
an area you would like to improve. List some steps to move yourself from where you are now toward
where you'd like to be. For example, you might decide to take a class, or volunteer to head a team for a
project, or learn a new computer language, or read books on the area you would like to improve, and so
forth.
• List some steps to move from where you are now toward where you' d like to be.
• Categorize the steps as immediate, medium-term, or long-term actions.
