When Cointreau invited burlesque star Dita Von 

Teese to be its brand ambassador for a special 

project, it was a suitable pairing. After all, one 

of her most famous routines of the past few years 

was a performance taking place in an outsized 

martini glass. 

With an image which harks back to the 

glamorous 1940s, the performer is helping to 

promote a special collectors’ item called My 

Cointreau Travel Essentials. Inside a luxury hat box 

you’ll find vintage-style glasses, a silver cocktail 

shaker and a limited-edition bottle of the orange 

liqueur – all inspired by Von Teese’s globe-trotting 

adventures in some of the world’s best hotel bars. 

“The Hemingway Bar in Paris makes divine 

drinks. They even make my Cointreau Teese 

[Cointreau, apple juice, lemon juice and violet 

syrup],” says Von Teese, who used to be married to 

goth rocker Marilyn Manson and names the Père 

Lachaise cemetery as her favourite Parisian 

hideaway because “it’s very beautiful”. 

While connoisseurs pay £399 for the Travel

BLUES AT MOONLIGHT, MALAGA 

A three-night festival, Blues At 

Moonlight lays on the rhythm and 

blues until sunrise. Held at the

In fact, it’s one of Spain’s most mouth-watering 

festivals and it’s now spread over two weeks. Around 

90 restaurants in the province (and 20 in the city of 

Alicante itself) are offering bargain-hunting gourmets 

the chance to try three of their most interesting dishes 

for just over £1. 

This includes restaurants such as the wonderful 

Nou Manolin (3 Calle de Villegas, Alicante, +34 

965 200 368) where, as a rule, £1 wouldn’t even 

get you a napkin. Last year they offered, among other 

things, a wonderful pulpo (octopus) dish that made it 

easy to see why critics now call the province of Alicante

Cathy Come Home 

A new adaptation of Wuthering Heights returns the 

story to its roots on the rugged Yorkshire moors 

BIG SCREEN 

Remember the kitsch West End musical starring 

Cliff Richard? Or Kate Bush prancing around in 

a muslin dress warbling? Emily Brontë’s 1847 

novel Wuthering Heights has been subjected to 

its fair share of abuse over the years. 

Now the gothic tale of the illicit love and 

mutual destruction of farmer’s daughter 

Catherine “Cathy” Earnshaw and her 

brooding foster brother Heathcliff is being 

given a new treatment. The adaptation from 

up-and-coming British director Andrea 

Arnold (Fish Tank, Red Road), while 

controversial, returns the story to its 

earthy, elemental origins. 

“The characters are defined 

by nature and by this very 

wild, rugged landscape where 

they live,” says Arnold. 

“That’s why the film feels 

animalistic at times. 

But when you get right 

down to it, we are all 

basically animals.” 

Accordingly, it’s the 

Yorkshire landscape 

that’s the real star of 

the film. Shot on location with handheld 

cameras near Thwaite, on the Yorkshire Dales, 

at a farmhouse without electricity or running 

water – and liberally salted with sex, violence 

and swearing – it’s a different animal to the 

chintzier adaptations of times past. 

“I really wanted to honour 

Brontë,” Arnold continues. 

“Wuthering Heights is 

a strange, dark and profound 

book and I wanted to capture 

that spirit.” It wasn’t all 

trudging the rain-swept moorland, 

though – during the arduous 

shoot, the cast holed up at the 

£85-per-night King’s Head 

Hotel (kingsheadrichmond.

nearby Richmond. 

The authentic locations 

aren’t the film’s only 

Yorkshire connection. 

Wuthering Heights has been 

chosen to open the 25th 

Leeds International Film 

Festival at Leeds Town Hall.

James Howson (left) is the latest actor to play 

glowering antihero Heathcliff, after the likes of 

Laurence Olivier in William Wyler’s 1939 

adaptation, former 007 Timothy Dalton in 

a later 1970 version and, more recently, Ralph 

Fiennes (in 1992) and Tom Hardy (on TV). 

Starring opposite Kaya Scodelario (Effy from 

gritty teen drama Skins) as Cathy, Howson was 

plucked from the streets of Leeds by the film’s 

casting director. Why? “Fresh start,” he says, 

“Came across me in the job centre, I suppose. 

People said I had the face of an actor. I had 

nothing to lose.”

From Mexican freedom fighter to animated feline, sexy Spaniard 

Antonio Banderas has clawed his way to the top of the 

Hollywood tree. James Mottram meets the man from Málaga 

The last time I met Antonio Banderas, 

during the Berlin International Film 

Festival in 2007, he was in a bind. About 

to reprise the role of Puss in Boots, his 

scene-stealing, swashbuckling feline from the Shrek 

movies, he knew he had created a monster. “I hate 

that cat!” he grumbles to me when we chat in a hotel 

suite. “Ever since I did that cat, I disappear. It’s all 

about the cat. Women just come up to me and go 

[adopting a shrill female voice], ‘Oh, we love your 

pussycat!’ Before they used to say, ‘We loved your 

Zorro!’ Bloody cat! It stole everything from me.” 

He’s joking, of course. The Spanish star has seen 

his Hollywood stock rise immeasurably thanks to 

the success of Puss in Boots, a character inspired by 

his own portrayal of the eponymous swordsman in 

The Mask Of Zorro. So it’s no surprise to discover 

that Banderas’ furry alter ego has been promoted 

from supporting player to starring role. Without 

an ogre in sight, Puss In Boots tells the story of the 

cat before he met Shrek, as he hunts down the 

murderous Jack (Billy Bob Thornton) and Jill 

(Amy Sedaris), and wrangles with a devious 

Humpty Dumpty (Zach Galifianakis). 

When we meet again, at the Cannes Film Festival 

earlier this year, Banderas has just enjoyed a longawaited 

reunion with Spain’s number-one director 

Pedro Almodóvar for The Skin I Live In, in which he 

plays a demented plastic surgeon. After such a serious 

role, the Shrek spin-off was just what the doctor 

ordered. “Making people happy, especially kids, is 

very rewarding for an actor,” says Banderas. “I’ve 

seen that for many years with Shrek. It’s good to 

entertain people, and not have to always reflect 

on the meaning of life.” 

Wearing a white shirt and beige chinos, Banderas 

may now be 51 but it’s not hard to see why his 

dark-brown eyes still induce swoons wherever he 

goes. There’s been no need for nips or tucks either 

– “I wouldn’t have that,” he swears – he’s in great

shape. “I feel better than ever,” he says. “I’m totally 

happy. I feel good with life.” It helps that he’s just 

celebrated his 15th wedding anniversary with actress 

Melanie Griffith. Having met her on 1996’s Two 

Much while still married to Spanish actress Ana Leza, 

it’s a union that few people gave any chance of 

surviving. So what’s their secret? “It’s very simple,” 

he whispers. “It’s love.” 

Living with their 14-year-old daughter Stella in 

California, Banderas maintains the couple has “a very, 

very normal life”. Then again, “normal” in Hollywood 

means something else. Perching on a white-cushioned 

sofa, Banderas tells me about Griffith’s mother, Tippi 

Hedren, the star of Alfred Hitchcock’s 1960s films The 

Birds and Marnie, who now operates an exotic animal 

sanctuary. “My mother-in-law has 72 lions – this is 

absolutely true – an hour and 25 minutes north of 

Los Angeles,” he says. “Is that crazy or what? She 

used to have two elephants, but they died.” 


For Banderas, Griffith’s Hollywood upbringing was 

light years away from his own childhood in Málaga. 

Growing up in the repressive twilight years of Franco’s 

regime, his mother was a schoolteacher and his father 

a member of Franco’s secret police, which was not 

quite as dramatic as it sounds – he worked in the 

customs department. “In fact, he voted socialist the 

moment the party was legalised.” 

As a child, Banderas dreamed of becoming a vet, 

then a lawyer, and finally a professional footballer, 

until a broken left foot ended his hopes. Then, when 

he was 13, he saw a production of the musical Hair 

and his life was transformed. “When I was a teenager, 

everybody else was into rock’n’roll. I was theatre, 

theatre, theatre.” Even so, his emotions were in 

turmoil. “I don’t remember those years as being 

happy at all. I remember a lot of confusion, emptiness, 

not knowing what to do. What am I going to do 

with my life? Am I going to be an actor?” 

It wasn’t until he and some friends formed a theatre 

group – named Dintel – that his confidence began 

to swell. “I started relaxing in a certain way and just 

giving my life a certain perspective that I didn’t have 

at the time at all,” he says. “It’s very interesting in 

a country that was not allowed to dream that we

dared to do that and fulfil our dreams.” When Banderas 

was 19 he moved to Madrid. His parents sent him on 

his way with 15,000 pesetas, though they were 

anything but happy at his departure. “I remember 

when I said I wanted to be an actor, that was quite 

something. My father wanted to kill me!” 

He was just 22 when he got his big-screen break 

thanks to Almodóvar, who cast him as an Arab terrorist 

in 1982’s Labyrinth Of Passion. They made a further 

four films together – including the Oscar-nominated 

Women On The Verge Of A Nervous Breakdown – before 

Banderas made a bid for Hollywood stardom. Unable 

to speak a word of English, he learnt his lines 

phonetically to play a trumpet player in 1992’s The 

Mambo Kings. Perhaps even more impressively, he 

also learnt the exact hand positions on the trumpet 

valves for every note his character performs on screen. 

The film helped cultivate his image as a Latin lover 

– something he’s never quite managed to shake off. 

“I never had a problem with it,” he shrugs. “But you 

cannot play the Latin lover at 60 years old. I don’t see 

myself this way. For example, I don’t have anything 

against firemen. But if I play a fireman five times in 

my life, I don’t like them anymore. It’s that simple.” 

Next up are roles in Jean-Jacques Annaud’s 1930s-set 

Arabic oil drama Black Gold and Steven Soderbergh’s 

CIA thriller Haywire, which sees him rocking a bushy 

white beard (a further step away from the Latin lover 

image). But he still seems bursting with pride at his 

status as a Hollywood trailblazer, leading the way for 

Spanish stars such as Javier Bardem and Penélope 

Cruz. “I never pretended to be a guy from anywhere 

else when I first went to Hollywood,” he says. “I am 

what I am.” 

Banderas remains deeply attached to Spain, with 

business interests including a vineyard, a Granada-based 

animation firm and Green Moon, the production

of-age drama, his second film as director (following 

1999’s Crazy In Alabama, made with Griffith), took 

him – gladly – back to Málaga, and he hopes to shoot 

his third effort, the sci-fi thriller Solo, there next year. 

“I am Andalusian!” he cries. “I have been raised in 

between flamenco players and bullfighters, and in my 

land they carry virgins that look like puppets on 

thrones of gold baroque! That is my story.” 

He’s referring to the fact that every Easter during 

Holy Week he returns to Málaga to lead the Virgen de 

Lágrimas y Favores (“Virgin of Tears and Favours”) 

procession. In 2008, while he was filming The Other 

Man in London, he even had it written into his 

contract that he must be allowed to leave the set to 

take part in the ceremony. “It’s important to make

An icy mountain paradise just 120km from Chambéry, Val Cenis is the 

perfect place to try your hand at dog sledding and snowshoeing.

Dog Sledding 

The four huskies that pulled my sled across the 

mountains of Val Cenis made me jealous. Sure, 

they were doing all the hard work, valiantly 

dragging me up hills. But although the sun was 

shining, the bracing winds cut through my gloves 

and I couldn’t help but envy the dense, furry coats 

shielding them from the cold. After ten minutes 

on the trail, my digits were no longer functioning 

– a major problem when you’re rattling down 

a slope at terrific speeds. I fell off my sled with 

predictable regularity. 

I hadn’t been expecting such a rollercoaster 

ride. Naively I’d imagined a relaxing excursion 

with my canine chauffeurs, a chance to soak up the 

spectacular scenery. As the trip got bumpier and 

the bars upon which I placed my feet got ever more 

slippery, just staying on became mission impossible. 

To steer, I had to lean in my desired direction, 

which nearly landed me in frozen water every time. 

I understood the importance of developing a rapport

with the huskies. I smiled at them pre-ride and 

shouted instructions in schoolboy French (rather 

than confuse them with a foreign language), but 

my canine companions seemed to have their own

At its speediest moments sledding was windin-the-hair 

exhilarating, like skiing downhill on 

a bucking horse. But it also had its challenges. 

On one occasion the huskies turned right instead of 

left and I had to be rescued by our tour leader while 

everybody else in our convoy waited for me to catch 

up. With a bit of guidance I somehow made it to the 

end of the circuit. The beleaguered quartet doing 

the driving returned to a tent marked “Dortoir 

Chiens”, a dormitory for dogs, while I went over to 

the fire to warm up again and reflect on what had 

been – despite all the tumbles and spills – a unique 

and memorable experience.

Snowshoeing 

When we stood still there was a glorious 

silence, but when we walked our snowshoes 

clicked and clacked, a steady beat backing 

the industrial grind of the snow underfoot. 

We were in the middle of a forest and the 

scenery was magnificent. It was early 

evening and the pristine landscape was 

breathtaking - the fields, mountains and 

trees all shades of blue, gold and white. 

We were wearing footwear specially 

designed to make walking on deep snow 

a cinch. Snowshoes look comically 

oversized, even clownish, but the larger 

surface area means that your feet don’t 

penetrate the show. After making light 

work of the deep snow we reached the 

village of Bessans. Our guide showed us 

some glorious 16th-century churches and 

told us about the village’s rich history. 

ALPINE A LPINE PURSUITS 

By the time we’d reached La Grange 

du Travérole, a little restaurant so isolated 

that it’s a wonder anybody knows of its 

existence, we were starving. The remedy 

was some hearty, warming food typical of 

the region – a stew of polenta and sausages 

served with bread and beer. Not haute 

cuisine, but exactly the kind of fuel 

required for the long snowshoe back 

to the hotel.

Bessans is only a tiny place, but it boasts a worldclass 

winter sports stadium. The venue was built 

to host the unorthodox activity of biathlon, 

a cross-country skiing race punctuated by regular 

visits to the shooting range. If you misfire with 

your rifle and fail to hit the target, you are 

penalised by having 20 or so seconds added to your 

overall time. This long-established combination of 

skiing and shooting seems crazy until you learn that 

it was invented as a form of military training for 

Norwegian soldiers, who presumably need to be 

able to both shoot enemies and quickly ski away 

from enemies trying to shoot them. 

Getting into the spirit of things, I considered 

Stade De Biathlon Bessans my battlefield and 

prepared to outrun and outshoot the opposition. 

But things didn’t work out as planned. Being 

a proficient downhill skier hadn’t prepared me 

for cross-country skiing. The skis are longer and 

narrower than those used for downhill, and only 

the front end of the foot is attached to them. 

I struggled to pick up speed, and when I did get 

moving it was all I could do to stay upright. 

Considering I’ve never fired a rifle before, the 

shooting part of the event went surprisingly well. 

It probably helped that the targets weren’t 50m 

away – the standard distance in biathlon – but 

more or less right in front of me. As long as I kept 

a steady hand, I hit the target. After a little more 

practice, we were ready to race. The initially fiddly 

cross-country skis began to make sense. The curved 

tips made it easy to glide through lumpy snow and 

the poles became important not just for maintaining 

balance, but picking up speed. 

I skied, I shot, the points were tallied up and... 

I came second! I’ve sent a copy of my CV to the 

Norwegian army just in case...

THE PAINFUL KNEE 

If you have a knee problem that stops you from enjoying life, it is probably 

time to seek specialist advice. Knees can wear out over time, and sports 

such as golf may place extra strain on the knee. 

Damage to either the smooth articular cartilage (joint surface) or the 

meniscus (shock absorbers) can lead to osteoarthritis or a meniscus tear. 

These can be painful and restrict activities. 

Although meniscus tears often occur in pivoting sports, they may occur 

simply when standing up from a sitting position. Treatment initially is 

rest, anti-inflammatory medicine and physiotherapy, but if it fails to 

settle, arthroscopy (keyhole surgery) is a safe and reliable procedure to 

treat the torn fragment. 

Osteoarthritis is the wear and tear of a joint beyond its capacity for 

repair. It is a chronic condition that can be very painful and disabling. 

If problems persist after simple pain relief and modifying activity, a 

surgical treatment may be considered. The most common surgical 

procedure for severe osteoarthritis is a knee replacement, which is a 

reliable and successful operation.

KNEE INJURIES ON THE SKI SLOPES 

A third of all skiing injuries affect the knee. Of these, the most common 

problem is a ligament injury. 

A rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), the most serious 

ligament injury, can cause the knee to become unstable particularly 

when twisting – a key action for turning on the slopes. Longer term, it 

increases the risk of the knee wearing out early (osteoarthritis). 

There are some simple things you can do to reduce the chances of 

injury:

their one-week’s skiing is the most intense exercise they will do all

If you are unlucky enough to sustain a knee injury, early specialist 

advice is critical to make the best possible recovery but beware of

rinking aperitivos in the early evening, 

having a late dinner under the stars and 

then hitting the hotel bar for a nightcap: 

that pretty much summed up the last 

holiday I had in Rome with friends a few years 

ago when I was single. 

Fast forward and I’m returning to the city of 

la dolce vita, not only with a bloke in tow, but 

a one-year-old baby, aptly named Roman. 

So how can you make the most of a city 

break with baggage (in the nicest possible way) 

of a different kind? And how best to adapt your 

itinerary to fit the needs of a young family while 

still making the most of Rome? 

The stereotype of children-loving Italians is so 

true that it kicks off right from the start: a nun in 

the queue for the taxi rank helped with our luggage 

(we had God on our side). Then came our macho 

taxi driver (a former policeman whose official 

vehicle used to be a Lamborghini – only in Italy 

would this be normal) who couldn’t do enough to 

help us. Frankly, why go anywhere else with a 

bambino? In the Eternal City, you’re on safe ground 

to do the following: 

Eat Out 

It’s so much easier to do here. Italian restaurants are 

not only cool about having little ones scampering 

around; they often actively engage with the kids 

while you chow down pasta. 

In the centre of town near the Piazza Navona 

is a gem called Ristorante Maccheroni (44 Piazza 

delle Coppelle). Even non-Roman Italians make 

a point of visiting this former butcher’s shop which 

has retained the meat hooks and white tiles. The 

basic-looking interior belies the amazing food, 

priced around £8-£10 for main courses. While we 

tucked into plates of (you guessed it) macaroni with 

provolone cheese and trofie with courgette flowers 

and saffron, the baby was whisked off into the 

kitchen by the staff. He returned uncooked. 

For one of the best pizzas in town, check out 

the Al Forno della Soffitta (62-64 Via Piave), with 

its huge wood-burning oven taking centre stage. 

On the bar are cured hams which the silver-fox 

owner carves carefully as you can see on its 

interactive website, alfornodellasoffitta.it. It 

looks like a cosy neighbourhood restaurant 

but people come from all over the city for its 

award-winning pizzas priced at £8-£9 (it was 

a semifinalist in a national pizza competition).

seafood restaurant Chinappi (19 via Valenziani). 

Despite its elegant dining room and candelabra, the 

staff are relaxed about toddlers zooming around 

the floor. The trick is to go early; Italians rarely 

sit down for dinner before 8.30pm so a 7pm 

reservation means you can have a leisurely meal 

in what is effectively a private restaurant. 

Say Cin-Cin! 

Admittedly, going out for drinks can be tricky with 

little ones in tow. But this is the city that invented 

the art of making a drink last a long time – and 

elegantly – so you don’t feel guilty. 

The culture of the aperitivo here, where bars 

offer a free buffet of snacks with your drinks 

during happy hour, means that your tummy is 

always lined. Fun options include the Friends bar/ 

clubs (citywide branches include trendy Trastevere 

and Via Piave). These attract a younger crowd 

drinking beers and cocktails while nibbling on 

salami, bruschetta or mini pizzas. 

Cheat At Art 

Be honest, how many small children enjoy traipsing 

round art galleries or museums? And once you’ve 

paid the entrance fee you feel cheesed off for 

sneaking out early. Relax. Check out some amazing 

– and free – art by popping into the Santa Maria del 

Popolo church, on the north-facing corner of the 

Factbox

walk away from the Borghese Gardens in

They’ve had their treat, now mums can treat 

themselves to the Cavalieri Grand Spa Club

treatments to non-residents too. It’s seriously 

five star, so most things are extravagant, but the 

pampering manicures are a do-able special luxury 

at about £35 – almost reasonable given what it 

costs on the high street – yet this place was recently 

named among the world’s top five by an American 

glossy. You’ll feel like Sophia Loren at the end of it. 

Venture Outdoors 

The Borghese Gardens are Rome’s answer to 

New York’s Central Park, giving active kids the 

chance to have some breathing space and room 

for a kickabout among its impressive statues – at 

certain times of the year there are even carousels. 

The park at Villa Doria Pamphili, meanwhile, 

has popular puppet shows in the afternoons. 

Skipping around the old stones of the Forum 

– there are two either side of the Via de Forii 

Imperialii – will make ancient history come 

alive for the little ones. Older children will be 

mesmerised by the Colosseum, or you can take 

them down to the beach at Ostia for a few days 

though, ultimately, they’ll want to return to the 

capital. Don’t all roads lead to Rome?

didn’t seem very promising as my guide 

Juan rapped on it authoritatively. But 

when it finally swung open, however, 

the air filled with a heavenly fragrance of charred 

rosemary, braised pork and something that smelled 

like roasted apples. This was the last stop on my 

weekend tour of Tenerife’s guachinches (pronounced 

“gwa-chin-chis”), local restaurants for in-the-know 

gourmet diners. 

These no-frills venues are found in backyards and 

garages all over the island and derive their name 

from a corruption of “watchingye” (or “I’m 

watching you”), a phrase used by English merchants 

in the 16th century when they wanted to try the 

local malmsey wine with a view to purchasing. 

Originally just a backroom in the local vintner’s 

house where the wife served tapas of chickpea stew 

and broiled goat’s meat to wine buyers, guachinches 

have evolved into strictly controlled, good-value 

eateries serving homemade food and homegrown 

wine. Often overlooked by visitors, many guachinches 

are situated in the north of the island, an hour’s 

drive from Reina Sofia Airport (Tenerife South) 

The air fills with the 

fragrance of charred 

rosemary, braised pork 

and what smells like 

roasted apples 

and home to several wine-producing regions, but 

there are also excellent ones in the south, where 

I started my tour. Since they are often hidden down 

alleys or along winding country lanes, I took local 

Juan Castellanos along as my guide. 

We drove through dappled autumn sunlight to 

the provincial capital of Granadilla, where a wiggly 

road hedged with prickly pears (perfect for jam) 

climbed to Cruz de Tea, a scattering of brightly 

coloured houses spread over the foothills of the 

2,700-metre-high Guajara mountain. 

En route we discussed the staples of Tenerifian 

home cooking: brine-fresh fish soup sancocho, 

chickpea stew potaje de berros, sweet blood sausage 

morcillas dulces and hearty pimiento sauces known 

as mojos. “Every family has their own special mojo 

recipe,” Juan told me. 

All this talk of food gave me a good appetite by 

the time we reached our first guachinche at noon. We 

entered through a plain wooden door into the cool 

and cave-like dining room of Cumbres de Abono

TENERIFE BITES 

(Cruz de Tea, Vilaflor) where, Juan assured me, they 

serve the best escaldon on the island. Gofio – a flour 

made from roasted wheat grain – is mixed with 

meat juices to produce this Tenerifian speciality, 

which has been on the menu since the island was 

first inhabited in around 200BC. Eaten on its own 

this creamy, meaty, porridge-like dish is slightly 

bland, but with chorizo, red pepper and raw onion 

mixed in – and served with a carafe of red wine – 

it’s filling and delicious. Best of all, our hearty lunch 

cost us a very affordable £14 for two. 

The winding road led us on to Vilaflor, a hamlet 

overshadowed by the Teide volcano. We took 

a stroll through the narrow, shaded streets of 

this pretty village before heading for guachinche 

Hermano Pedro (16 Carretera Hoyo, Vilaflor) that 

evening. A nondescript concrete cube painted pastel 

pink and fronted with plastic chairs and tables 

butting onto the sidewalk, Hermano Pedro was 

disappointing at first glance. The earsplitting buzz 

of diners inside, however, told a different story. 

Juan explained that each guachinche has its 

speciality – here at Hermano Pedro’s it’s that 

Tenerifian favourite, carne fiesta. Bustling out of 

the kitchen, Pedro briskly spread a chequered 

paper cloth over our table, banged down two 

tumblers and a carafe of red wine, then returned 

to the kitchen for our food. Brought to the table 

in an old iron skillet that had obviously seen 

better days, the garlicky pimiento pork, which 

is cooked in a slow oven with lashings of local 

white wine, was so moist and fragrant it brought 

a grin of pleasure to our faces, and we were 

still grinning when the bill – about £16 

for two – arrived. 

The next morning we left our parador at 

Las Canadas del Teide and zigzagged down along 

the road towards La Orotava, where we turned 

off for Aguamansa. 

Surrounded by Canary pines, Aguamansa’s 

atmospheric guachinche (+34 922 330 638) has 

large wooden tables and terracotta walls covered 

with old agricultural implements. We ordered 

the grilled freshwater trout at £9 – a dish for which

this eatery is justly renowned. Served on a large 

wooden platter, it was tender and slightly sweet, 

and married perfectly with a side dish of papas 

arugadas: buttery boiled potatoes basted with 

a garlicky mojo sauce. Lined with renaissance 

mansions, churches and gardens, La Orotava’s 

streets were the perfect place to stroll off our 

lunchtime calories and work up an appetite for 

the last guachinche of our two-day trip. 

And so to where we came in, behind that 

nail-studded door. Inside, guachinche Nunca es 

Lejos (Calle de las Turcas, La Corujera, Santa 

Ursula, +34 609 961 315) was packed to the 

rafters with locals and out-of-town diners. Since 

it only opens for a few brief months during the 

wine-producing season, we were lucky to get 

a table. And as we tucked into the hunks of 

rosemary-barbecued goat’s meat for which, 

once again, we paid a pittance, we congratulated 

ourselves on discovering Tenerife’s little-sung 

gastronomic gems.

The best and second best triathletes in the world can’t help but stand out from 

the crowd – they’re brothers. Neil Squires meets sibling rivals the Brownlees 

Alistair Brownlee, who was crowned the 

world’s triathlon champion ahead of his 

brother, Jonathan, in Beijing this September, 

thinks back to the first time he felt the sport’s iron 

grip on him. He was ten years old and trying out 

a mini-version of the event his uncle enjoyed. 

He can still recall the thrill of competition and the 

buzz of swimming, cycling and running one after 

the other, but his abiding memory is of the part in 

between. “When you’re ten, trying to put your 

shoes on fast is interesting itself,” he points out. 

Now, 13 years on, what inspires one of Britain’s 

hottest prospects for Olympic gold next summer 

is the perverse satisfaction he derives from pushing 

his body to its limits. Completing a 1.5km swim, 

a 40km cycle ride and then a 10km run is tough 

enough in a week, never mind the 110 minutes it 

takes Brownlee. 

“There is pain,” he admits. “When you’re having 

a bad day everything is painful in an endurance sport. 

If you’re having a really, really good day you can 

sometimes come out of it and hear the crowd or

music, but that happens very rarely. Most of the time 

you just focus on the race, the person next to you, and 

beating them. 

“One of the best bits is when you finish, but it’s 

still a lot of fun and it’s an interesting sport to train for. 

Yorkshire is a beautiful place to train. We ride up 

Wharfedale most days, run on the Chevin and Ilkley 

Moor, and swim at the John Charles pool in Leeds.” 

It would be a lonely existence were it not for the 

fact that Alistair has a partner for his 35-hour-a-week 

training schedule: his younger brother Jonathan. 

While older bro is one of Britain’s Olympic bankers 

next summer, his sibling is also a medal prospect for 

London 2012. The 21-year-old took bronze at the 

world championship series event in Hyde Park in 

August behind his victorious brother in what was 

effectively a dry run on the Olympic course. 

Well matched at swimming, Alistair tends to have 

the edge in the cycling and running stages, but that 

did not prevent his younger brother beating him this 

summer in Lausanne, a shorter event billed – with 

no irony intended – as a “sprint triathlon”. 

“Beating Alistair was a bit weird – it doesn’t 

normally happen,” says Jonathan frankly. “But it 

wasn’t the full distance and he was suffering from 

an illness so I still haven’t beaten him properly.” 

Their joint assault on the Olympic rostrum is being 

plotted from the house they share in the leafy north 

Leeds suburb of Bramhope, a stone’s throw away 

from Jet2.com’s headquarters at Leeds Bradford 

Airport and five minutes away from their parents. 

“Neither of us can cook so we tend to go round 

to mum and dad’s a lot,” laughs Jonathan. Both 

doctors, the senior Brownlees had ideal triathlon 

DNA to pass on. Mum Cath was a strong swimmer 

and dad Keith a good club runner. A county 

cross-country champion at Bradford Grammar 

School, Alistair led the way into triathlon and 

Jonathan soon followed. However, after flirting with 

his parents’ calling by reading medicine at Cambridge

University. This gave him 

the time he needed to 

devote to triathlon. 

The decision helped him win a place at the Beijing 

Olympics four years ago where he came 12th. And it 

gave him another insight too: “Triathlon is one of the 

sports where the Olympics really is a big step above 

everything else. It’s massive, and with it being a home 

Olympics this time we’ll never have a chance like this 

again. It’s still a long way away but I’m excited.” 

Jonathan, like Alistair a member of the triathlon 

club at Leeds Metropolitan University’s Carnegie 

High Performance Centre, was in China as a spectator. 

“It was good experience for me. What I learned was 

that, though the Olympics is massive all around the

world, at the end of the day for us it’s just another 

triathlon. We swim, bike and run – and that’s it.” 

Their countdown to London 2012 began with 

a return to training at the end of October. It’s a regime 

which will, for the most part, be conducted together 

around the hills and dales of Yorkshire. Visit a café 

near Bolton Abbey or Gargrave this winter and you 

might catch the Brownlees taking a breather. 

It’s not all about shivering through a Northern 

winter though – the pair will hop aboard a Jet2.com 

flight from Leeds Bradford to Lanzarote in December 

for the first of two warm-weather training breaks. 

The idea is to sculpt a titanium physique capable 

of coping with the contrasting demands of the three 

sports. It pays to be light – both are just under 6ft 

and weigh a few pounds either side of 10 stone – but 

they need the muscle strength of men twice their 

size. “You need a balance. If you’re too skinny you 

sink and if you’re too heavy you can’t run. We’re 

quite lucky in that we seem to stay just skinny 

enough,” explains Jonathan. 

The fitness regime, which involves burning 5,000 

calories a day, has to go to plan or the results can be 

alarming. In June 2010 Alistair’s tank ran dry during 

the closing stages of the Hyde Park event. From 

being part of the leading trio with his brother and 

Spain’s Javier Gomez, his main rival for Olympic 

gold, he dropped back to 10th. As exhaustion hit, 

he staggered over the finishing line, collapsing into 

the arms of medical staff.

A triathlete’s life is never dull. In June this year, 

Alistair took the European championship gold in Spain 

despite losing 90 seconds to a puncture. “We were 

both in the leading group of cyclists when I got 

a puncture,” he recalls. “Jonny slowed down, which 

slowed the front pack down, and that gave me the 

chance to change my wheel and catch up again.” 

This act of sibling loyalty was remarkable in a sport 

built on the single-mindedness of its competitors. Says 

Jonathan: “It happens all the time in cycling but I’ve 

never seen it happen before in triathlon. It was just 

instinct. Getting a puncture is unfair and I didn’t 

want to beat him by something going wrong for him. 

There’s never really been a team culture in triathlon 

but it’s starting to get one now. We work together.” 

This unique double act is one which could make 

headlines around the world next summer. One 

Olympic medal is rare; two in the same Olympics 

for the same family would be the stuff of fantasy. 

“It would be absolutely incredible,” says Jonathan. 

“The chances are small because so much can happen 

in triathlon, but the unpredictability is what makes it 

exciting. We’ll have to wait and see – and hope.”

How has travel influenced your work? 

“On my trips abroad I always take a sketchbook 

to document the ideas that inspire me – whether 

it’s the people or the surroundings. When 

I travelled to Paris, the art nouveau architecture 

stood out for me and I imagined incorporating 

some of the details into my personal designs. 

“I also have a future collection based on the 

architecture in Barcelona, which I’ve visited 

a number of times, both in summer and winter. 

Gaudí’s work is all over the city and it’s based 

on organic forms that I find very inspiring.” 

What tips would you give people thinking of 

packing jewellery for their holidays? 

“I always carry my jewellery in velvet display 

pouches, with separate ones for necklaces, 

rings, earrings, bangles etc. These are great 

for showing off my collection, and when I’m 

travelling they act like portable jewellery boxes 

because you can see every piece clearly rather 

than rummaging through your bag. Plus it avoids 

your necklace chains getting tangled together – 

it used to take me hours to entangle them!” 

How should you look after your jewellery abroad? 

“Avoid wearing jewellery in the sun as suncream 

can add cloudiness to a stone. Also, I remove my 

jewellery when swimming in the pool to avoid 

any damage from chemicals and before going 

into the sea as this can cause reactions with 

some metals and stones. Use a cotton cloth to 

remove any dust, then give it a proper wash with 

a toothbrush and soft soap.”

PRAGUE CIDER 

You wouldn’t go to Peru for 

pizza or Sierra Leone for sushi, 

right? After all, there are 

certain delicacies that specific 

countries are known for and some that 

just seem odd. The Czech Republic is 

practically synonymous with beer. So how 

did a beer-drinking local introduce cider 

to the nation? As that famous drinker 

Ernest Hemingway said: “Always do sober 

what you said you’d do drunk. That will 

teach you to keep your mouth shut.” 

So meet Vaclav Beran, a studiouslooking 

29 year old, who, along with 

his sister Lenka Beranova and long-time 

friend Petr Fila, launched Mad Apple cider 

a couple of years ago. “It was an eveningat-the-pub 

idea,” admits Lenka, 30, who 

looks after the business and marketing. She 

and Petr spent three years in the hospitality 

industry in Bournemouth, where they first 

discovered cider at a local pub. 

“Our first contact was funny – we 

didn’t know what it was,” she adds. 

“So Petr threw it away.” 

After trying out the drink a few 

more times, they eventually developed

Refresher Course 

Mad Apple’s founders hope to educate the Czech Republic’s 

drinkers about their cider’s thirst-quenching charms. But can 

Prague’s coolest drink compete with the local beers?

a fondness for the stuff. When Vaclav came 

for a visit in summer 2007, they couldn’t 

wait to introduce him to it. 

“After a few pints, we had the idea to 

go back to the Czech Republic and make it 

there, because there’s nothing like it,” she 

says. “The next day we thought, is this 

really what we want to do?” 

But the idea took hold and began to, 

well, ferment. At school Vaclav had studied 

chemistry, biology and, more unusually, 

viticulture – the perfect bases for creating 

alcohol – so the process of making cider 

appealed to him. When Petr and Lenka 

returned in 2009, they went back to the 

wine shop in Znojmo (a major winegrowing 

region of the Czech Republic), 

where Vaclav also worked. They still run 

the shop; Vaclav is Mad Apple’s only 

full-time employee. 

“I visited smaller cider houses in the 

UK, ones that grow apples and make cider 

on site, to look at the technology they 

used,” he explains. “There are so many 

different types of cider: still, sparkling, 

dry, medium, sweet, cloudy, clear…” 

They started small, in their garden, 

brewing 1,000 litres of cider using an 

apple press they made themselves. Family 

and friends were invited to an apple taste 

test, where Vaclav eventually settled on 

eight varieties. Fermentation took about 

two months, and then they left it in the 

barrels to mature. They eventually found 

a brewery in Uhersky Brod, 100km away, 

to pasteurise, carbonate and bottle it. But 

then came the key question: would people 

actually drink it?

‘With beer we can’t compete – 

the tradition here is too strong, 

but cider will find a niche’ 

“The reaction was very good, people liked it 

and the bottles [3,000 in the initial batch] were 

gone quite fast,” recalls Vaclav. He and his partners 

spent a lot of time passing out bottles across the 

country, trying to get a handle on the potential 

market. This was autumn 2009. Thanks to the 

positive response, one year later they decided to 

make it “for real” by renting a fermentation tank 

to stir up 20,000 litres. 

“We were doing it all ourselves – visiting bars, 

cafés, restaurants, teaching people what cider is and 

persuading them that it is a good, natural, healthy 

drink,” says Lenka. “We were pleased when people 

started coming to us asking for more.” 

As Mad Apple was the only cider people had 

heard of, it’s the only name they associate with the 

drink. Petr thought it up when travelling in Asia 

and suggested it to Vaclav, who loved it. He says 

it’s “people like them” who Mad Apple appeals to: 

younger, well-travelled Czechs who have discovered 

cider abroad and are looking for it at home. 

Lenka adds: “With beer we can’t compete, 

the tradition here is too strong, but cider will find 

a niche.” Ever the optimist, Vaclav thinks: “It could 

catch on in parts of the country where wine isn’t 

made, like Bohemia – there are lots of apples in the 

Czech Republic.” 

Currently the only place that serves Mad Apple 

on tap is Zubaty pes, a specialist beer bar in 

Prague’s Vrsovice neighbourhood. Owner Mike 

Cole says he’s seen all types of people trying Mad 

Apple, although the regular drinkers tend to be 

women. The company is also exporting to Poland 

and Slovakia, and it won a bronze medal at Drinks 

International magazine’s first International Cider 

Challenge last year. 

“We were so shocked,” says Vaclav. “We never 

expected our first big batch of cider to get an 

award in the UK.” 

Vaclav says Mad Apple’s future plans include 

improving the cider-making technology and 

spreading the word. The trio visits festivals across 

the country, handing out samples and selling bottles 

from the back of their van. “We want to drink 

good-quality cider in the Czech Republic and 

create many other cider lovers,” says Vaclav simply. 

“This is like a child we are raising and it 

is still a challenge to realise our dream.”

Play it safe 

Enjoy an injury-free ski season with 

some quick tips from orthopaedic surgeon 

Steve Bollen of The Yorkshire Clinic 

PROMOTION 

Mr Bollen has found that ski-related 

anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) 

injuries have tripled over the last 10 

years, with women over the age of 

40 accounting for 90% of them. The story is 

usually the same: a twisting injury where the 

bindings don’t release. This often occurs at slow 

speed, when getting on and off chairlifts – you 

feel a pop or snap and immediate pain. Usually it 

results in the indignity of being tobogganed down. 

Ski resort clinics can pressure patients to have 

surgery in the fi rst 24 to 48 hours, but this isn’t 

usually necessary unless there’s an associated 

fracture. In fact, there’s considerable evidence it’s 

better to wait three to four weeks before having the 

ligament reconstructed, to avoid the complication 

of scar formation in the joint. Even complex knee 

injuries involving several ligaments can be left up 

to 10 to 14 days before reconstruction. A brace, 

crutches, regular icing and anti-infl ammatories 

(providing there are no contraindications) will 

suffi ce until you return home, when you should 

get a specialist opinion urgently. 

Minimise your risk through at least six to eight 

weeks of muscle-building training. There are plenty 

of ski-fi tness programmes around, and leg-press 

machines most closely mimic the action of skiing 

and snowboarding. For snowboarding, wrist guards, 

coccyx and back protectors, and learning to fall 

correctly may help – and always wear a helmet. 

Knee braces have not been shown to prevent injury. 

All sports have risks, and there is nothing quite 

like mountains, blue sky and fresh snow. If the 

worst comes to the worst, the Yorkshire Clinic can

“I’m a serial entrepreneur,” says fearless 

businessman Iain Burton. “I wouldn’t say 

I could turn my hand to everything, but I think 

serial entrepreneurs can try most things.” Before 

becoming chairman of the stylish stationery and 

accessories house Aspinal of London, Burton, 

58, had run companies in other sectors. 

“My big claim to fame is that Simon Cowell 

and I worked together in the music industry in 

the 1980s and early 1990s. And no, I’m not 

going to tell you what he was like even back 

then!” laughs Burton. 

He is now best known for transforming what 

was originally a small leather goods 

business – think diaries, photo 

albums, passport covers – 

into a highly successful

at affordable prices and we’ve achieved that. For 

instance, a pure leather Aspinal passport cover 

with a beautiful finish costs £25, so why is 

a similar product sold for £100 by our rivals? 

“What’s important to us is that we make 

40-50 per cent of our products in the UK – I’m 

very proud of that ratio and I intend to 

keep it that way, instead of moving to 

the Far East where it would be cheaper.

quality is impeccable.”

at the outset, Burton, who owns 100 per cent

£150,000 in the first year. By the time Aspinal 

was stocked in Selfridges and had launched

to £8m-£10m. It’s a real achievement – 

particularly as Burton has never turned to 

outside investors. Next up is a standalone store 

in New York “by this time next year, followed 

by China, Japan and the Middle East”. 

So what’s his secret? “Just keep going, don’t 

take no for an answer and be a workaholic. I’m 

a worker bee! I really believe it is in our DNA to 

be the next big British luxury house. Burberry 

and Mulberry are doing amazingly but Burberry 

has been around for more than 150 years, 

Mulberry for 40. We’ve only been going for 

10 years but look at what we’ve done so far.

Spain’s Hot New Deals 

The Spanish government recently announced 

that it had slashed VAT on property by 

50 per cent with the aim of reducing the 

country’s unsold houses. Buyers have until 

the end of the year to take advantage of 

this policy change. 

In addition, leading developer Taylor 

Wimpey de España declared that it would 

match the reduction on new homes, so that 

prospective buyers can buy them VAT free 

until the New Year. This means new homes, 

complete with electrical appliances and 

construction guarantees, will cost the same 

as ones that have been previously lived in.

If you want a holiday home with character and year-round sun, 

a self-build in Lanzarote is a good bet, says Laura Latham

One of the most popular winter sun 

destinations for British holidaymakers, 

the Canary Island of Lanzarote offers 

a mix of great beaches, bustling resorts, 

rural villages and dramatic, volcanic scenery. And 

if you want to buy a little piece of it for yourself 

you’ll find that the holiday-home market has 

properties to suit all tastes. 

In the main resort areas such as Playa Blanca and 

Puerto Del Carmen there are plenty of nice and 

affordable “lock and leave” apartments and villas in 

serviced developments. These work perfectly well 

for those who want something easy and secure for 

a few weeks or months a year. 

A reasonable two-bedroom apartment or 

bungalow in a popular location will cost from 

around £130,000, though it is possible to find small 

one-beds for under £90,000. Attractive three- to 

four-bedroom homes cost from around £220,000 

upwards, depending on size and location. 

However, for those looking for something they 

can put their personal stamps on, self-builds or 

renovations are good alternatives. Whether you 

plan to relocate from the UK, or use your new 

home for holidays and rentals, these options offer 

character as well as contemporary comforts. 

Martin Sargent moved to Lanzarote from Kent 

just over 25 years ago and lives there with his wife, 

Natalie, and 19-year-old son, Luke. “I love the slow 

pace of life in Lanzarote and the friendly people,” 

Sargent says. “The winters here are fabulous, sunny 

and mild, and we have a very outdoors and 

family-friendly lifestyle.” 

Sargent took his first steps in the local property 

market when he bought and renovated an old 

farmhouse in the early 1990s. Since then, he’s built 

several family homes on the island and he now has 

his own construction and renovation firm, Natura 

Design (naturadesign.net). 

Thanks to early campaigning by famous local 

architect César Manrique, building regulations on 

Lanzarote are quite rigid in order to preserve the 

native environment and architecture. 

Sargent says it isn’t difficult to do up or build 

a traditional-style place but it helps if you understand 

the red tape and can oversee the work, otherwise 

you need a project manager. “It’s difficult without 

having someone on site in case there are problems,” 

he says. “And you really need someone with local 

knowledge of contractors and regulations.”

so you can only build in designated areas, and old

houses must be renovated in the traditional style 

within the footprint of the original building. 

“Building your own villa will cost around £900 per 

square metre and take about two years. Renovations 

are less cost effective so will be about £1,000 per 

square metre,” explains Sargent. “You can buy 

a 1,000 square metre plot for around £130,000, so 

you can get a bespoke villa for around £220,000.” 

Sargent is currently selling a lovely fourbedroom 

house with a pool that he designed and 

built six years ago in a village near Puerto Del 

Carmen. The traditional-look property is on the 

market for £415,000 and rents well year round. 

Another die-hard Lanzarote fan is Benn 

Atkinson, who came to the island 18 years ago 

from Surrey, with his wife, Zoe. The couple have 

two children, Talulah Ruby, 14, and Noah, 12,

“The old farmhouses make good family 

homes, they’re often large and in places where 

new properties can’t be built, so they are usually 

more peaceful and secluded,” says Atkinson. 

“They’re also designed to be cool in summer 

and warm in winter.” 

Atkinson has completed several renovations 

and always starts by gutting the properties, leaving 

any interesting or original features. He then 

re-renders and re-roofs the building and adds all 

the necessary utilities before redecorating. “It’s 

effectively a new-build in an old style,” he explains. 

Atkinson says you can still find larger 

farmhouses with land for renovation, though 

they are becoming rare. These tend to cost from 

£350,000, but you’ll need to add on the cost of 

renovation work, which can amount to £175,000.

He also advises using a lawyer when purchasing 

land, as ownership in rural areas can be split

The Atkinsons love the easy-going pace of life 

in Lanzarote and have worked hard to establish 

themselves here. They recently bought a farmhouse 

to renovate into a small hotel for outdoor-pursuits 

enthusiasts, and last year they took over La Cantina

the centre of a village called Teguise. The building 

is a 400-year-old house that has been partially 

restored by Atkinson. 

“We’re very happy in Lanzarote,” says Atkinson,

One Year On 

In September Jet2.com celebrated 

our first year at Glasgow Airport by 

adding extra flights to Dalaman 

in Turkey, plus increasing our 

capacity to Nice in the South of 

France for the peak holiday period.

Glasgow Airport from Easter 2012,

Becky Midgley took to 

a different kind of runway 

recently. Her mission was to 

model a bespoke dress that had 

been specially created by the 

airline to celebrate the official 

launch of the Leeds Loves 

Shopping festival. 

Up-and-coming Leeds 

designer Mandy Hudson created 

a fabulous red evening dress 

made from the very same 

e-leather that Jet2.com uses 

on its ergonomically designed 

aircraft seats – the first ever 

item of clothing to be made 

from the material. 

The dress was emblazoned 

with “22kg” – Jet2.com’s 

generous baggage allowance – 

which is important to travelling 

fashionistas and those who live 

to shop. Becky modelled the 

design at an exclusive fashion 

show at Leeds Bradford Airport.

Most of the following guidelines are 

mandatory under Civil Aviation Authority 

Regulations to make sure your flight is safe, 

comfortable and enjoyable 

SAFETY ONBOARD 

Knowing what to do in the unlikely event of an emergency could 

make all the difference to you and your family. The safety 

information card in your seat pocket and the cabin crew’s safety 

briefing gives you vital information on the location of exits and 

emergency equipment. As this can vary from one airline to 

another it is important to pay attention to the safety briefing and 

read the safety card each time you fly. Our crew are specially 

trained to ensure your safety and security at all times. It is an 

offence to refuse to obey any lawful command of the captain or 

cabin crew. Our primary concern is YOUR safety at all times. 

MOBILE PHONES 

To prevent interference to the aircraft communication and 

control systems the use of mobile phones or any other wireless 

communication devices is restricted onboard. Mobiles must not 

be used for internet access, text messaging or voice calls while 

onboard the aircraft. If your device is fitted with a “flight mode” 

or something similar you should switch it to this before the 

aircraft doors are closed to prevent any accidental transmission 

or reception. 

SEATBELTS 

Seatbelts protect you from injury and you are recommended to 

keep your belt fastened throughout the flight, and must do so 

whenever the seatbelt sign is switched on (during taxi, take-off, 

landing and turbulence). Adjust the seatbelt so that it is tight 

but comfortable with the buckle the right way around so that it 

can be easily released. Infants travelling on a passenger’s lap 

will require an infant seatbelt, which our cabin crew will happily 

fit for you. 

SMOKING 

Smoking is NOT PERMITTED on any of our flights, and for the 

safety of all our passengers the toilet compartments are fitted 

with highly sensitive smoke detectors. Violation of this law may 

lead to prosecution and a substantial fine. 

ALCOHOL 

Please bear in mind the fact that high altitude increases the 

physical effects of alcohol, so moderate consumption is 

recommended. It is illegal to be intoxicated onboard an aircraft.

The consumption of any alcoholic beverage onboard other than 

those that have been supplied from the in-flight bar is not 

permitted and the crew are authorised to remove alcohol from 

passengers drinking from their own supplies. 

PASSENGER BEHAVIOUR 

Jet2.com expects our passengers to behave in a responsible 

manner and we will not tolerate unacceptable behaviour. This 

includes foul language and any other behaviour that reduces 

other passengers’ enjoyment of the flight and causes them, 

or our staff, any degree of distress, discomfort or unnecessary 

inconvenience. We reserve the right to ban passengers from 

future flights if their behaviour is a threat to the safety of our 

passengers or crew. 

HAND LUGGAGE 

One small piece of hand luggage is allowed per person, providing 

its weight is less than 10kg and it is no larger than 56cm x 

45cm x 25cm including wheels and handles. Any piece of 

baggage that does not meet these requirements will be placed in 

the hold and the relevant fee will be charged. Any other excess 

hand luggage will be placed in the hold. Light or soft articles 

should be stowed in the overhead luggage compartments, 

heavier items under seats. Items lying loose on empty seats or 

obstructing the aisles or emergency exits are dangerous and you 

will be asked to remove them. 

ELECTRONIC EQUIPMENT 

Once the aircraft is at cruising altitude and the captain has 

turned off the “Fasten Seat Belt” sign, you are free to use 

laptops, CD players, MP3 players, computer games and most 

other electronic items. The use of electronic equipment of any 

kind is not permitted during taxi, take-off and landing. 

COMFORT 

Changes in the cabin air pressure may cause some slight 

discomfort in your ears. You can relieve this by swallowing hard, 

yawning or holding your nose while gently breathing out with 

your mouth closed. Flying also causes your body to dehydrate so 

you are advised to have something to drink that is not alcoholic. 

For your further comfort, please try to stretch your legs and arms 

as much as possible throughout the flight.

hot and cold drinks as well as a selection of delicious snacks,
