critically needed items that will
sustain those who have gone
through a crisis.”
DeCA recommends customers
have the following items in their
“closet”:
• Water – at least one gallon,
daily, per person for three to seven
days.
• Nonperishable foods – canned
meats, fruits, vegetables, dried
fruits, nuts, raisins, cereal,
crackers, cookies, energy bars,
granola, peanut butter, and foods
for infants and the elderly.
• Paper goods – writing paper,
paper plates, paper towels, toilet
paper.
• Cooking items – pots, pans,
baking sheet, cooking utensils,
charcoal, a grill and a manual can
opener.
• First-aid kit – including
bandages, medicines and
prescription drugs.
• Cleaning materials – bleach,
sanitizing spray, and hand and
laundry soap.
• Specialty foods – diet and
low-calorie foods and drinks.
• Toiletries – personal hygiene
items and moisture wipes.
• Pet care items – food, water,
muzzle, leash, carrier, medications,
medical records, and identification
and immunization tags.
• Lighting accessories –
flashlight, batteries, candles and
matches.

Luncheon herald

acting commander, and Scott O’Neil,
executive director, hosted the annual
honorary awards luncheon at China
Lake on June 11. The audience was
welcomed by O’Neil and then burst
into laughter when Storch added,
“This in an honor for us. Through the
presentation of these annual awards,
you get to know us as more than
humorless bureaucrats!”
For many of the awardees, the
announcement of their names was
a complete surprise. Dan Carreno
acknowledged that his wife called
him to come home early from travel
because “the barn’s flooded,” but
thanked her for her creative effort to
keep the surprise.
The Michelson Laboratory Award’s
“key” desk plaque, first given in 1966,
went to Carreno, Kimberly Berard,
Vicki Brady, Timothy Broadley,
Dave Ganger, Gene Gibson, William
standing by to provide exceptional
customer service,” said Sakowitz.
“So don’t wait until disaster
strikes. Visit your commissary
today, and you will see that – it’s
worth the trip.”

respected, tenacious, unstoppable
forces, with joint vision for the future
and high standards with long-term
effects. “You’ve heard us use the term
‘horizontal integration,’” O’Neil said,
“which is how we work together to
achieve an effort. These Michelson
Lab awards show the breadth of that. It
takes a lot of work, but I want to thank
you and ask you to continue to work
within this target-rich environment to
continue to be successful.”
Established in 1956, the Dr. L.T.E.
Thompson Memorial Award for
outstanding individual effort went
to Don Blake, Dr. Dan Harris, James
McManigal, Bob Pyke and Scott
Smith. As he called their names,
O’Neil noted their “unparalleled
contributions address and meet
