Thursday, July 2, 2009 TRICARE and dependent parents By Tyler Patterson TriWest Healthcare Alliance One great thing about your TRICARE coverage is it not only extends to your spouse and children, but in some cases, also climbs up your family tree to dependent parents and parents-in-law. The process to register your parents or parents-in-law as dependents varies by service branch. The best way to get started is by visiting your local ID card-issuing facility and asking for help to register a dependent parent. In an effort to make shopping at the NEX even more convenient, customers can now purchase gift cards from various businesses and banks such as prepaid wireless minutes, financial cards from Visa, Master Card and American Express, Starbucks, Subway and After your parents’ dependent status is confirmed, they will be eligible to receive a military ID card. This ID card is required for your parent to access care at a military treatment facility (MTF) through your TRICARE benefit. Once you’ve received your ID cards, there are a few things to keep in mind when accessing care for your dependent parents: • Dependent parents and dependent parents-in-law receive care at an MTF on a spaceavailable basis. This means they may not be able to secure an appointment when the MTF does iTunes. These cards will be available for purchase in all NEXs in the continental United States as well as Hawaii beginning July 8. “We know that gift cards are a big gift-giving item, especially for our customers who may live far from loved ones,” said Loretta Lambert, not have available capacity. • Dependent parents and parents-in-law are not eligible for TRICARE outside of the MTF. Any claim submitted to TRICARE for care received outside the MTF will be denied. • Dependent parents and parents-in-law are not eligible for TRICARE pharmacy benefits outside of the MTF, either. They also cannot use TRICARE’s Express Scripts pharmacy benefit in the civilian sector. • Because they are not eligible for TRICARE outside the MTF, any care received from a civilian Navy Exchange Service Command (NEXCOM) divisional merchandise manager. “We wanted to give our customers the opportunity to purchase a variety of gift cards right here in their NEX.” The gift cards will be activated upon purchase and scanning at a provider must be covered by another form of insurance, Medicare, for example. Remember, dependent parents and parents-in-law are not eligible for TRICARE Prime, TRICARE Standard or Extra or TRICARE For Life. They may only access care at an MTF to be covered by their sponsor’s TRICARE benefit. NEXs now sell bank and other prepaid cards NEX cash register. The financial cards will include a fee which will automatically ring up when the card is scanned. The fees range from $3.95 - $6.95 depending on the amount of the gift card. The gift and prepaid cards cannot be returned or refunded. NEX offers back to school promotion on computers NEX customers heading back to school can purchase a computer taking advantage of a special promotion through the Military Star card. From July 8 through 19, customers using their Military Star card to purchase an individual computer valued at $699 or more will enjoy no down payment, no interest and no payments for 180 days. This special offer applies to all manufacturers and models carried in stock at your local NEX. The Military Star card offers many benefits including 10 percent off the first day’s purchases (up to the customer’s credit limit), no annual fee, low interest rate and 24-hour customer service including online access. Military Star card applications are available at any NEX. The application can be processed the same day at the NEX customer service desk. 1501 N.
