January 17, 013 The Wilbraham-Hampden TIMES Page 1 Pehoviak double-double helps Lady Titans to victory WILBRAHAM - The Wilbraham & Monson Academy girls basketball team posted wins of a different fashion following winter break, winning a thriller and an easy one last week to improve to 6-2. The Titans topped the Kingswood- Oxford School in the closing seconds 49- 47 Jan. 9 before defeating the Gunnery School 58-9 Saturday. “I’m pleasantly surprised with how the kids have played since coming back from break,” coach Jess Rohan said. “It was as if they needed a little break to rejuvenate their basketball minds. We’re always playing hard, but now we’re playing smarter and making better decisions. We’re looking to make the right play: the smart play.” Megan Pehoviak of Monson has played great since the season resumed, averaging a double-double. She scored 17 points and had eight rebounds against Kingswood, and then added 14 points and 18 rebounds vs. Gunnery. “Megan’s really playing well,” coach Rohan said. “And the thing about Meg is, against Gunnery she could have had 30 points but she chose to really get everyone involved.” WMA’s most exciting game of the season was the win over Kingswood, with Helen Assefaw scoring on a transition layup with 1 second remaining to put the Titans ahead 48-47. “We wouldn’t have been able to do that last year,” coach Rohan added. Wegrzynek had eight points, six rebounds and four steals in a 46-40 loss to Eastern Nazarene on Thursday, Jan. 10. She also had a steal, an assist and a layup during a run in the second half of a 63-41 loss to Endicott on Tuesday, Jan. 8. WMA had its way against Gunnery. All nine players who were available for the game scored. Wilbraham’s Heather Little grabbed eight rebounds. The Pioneers 2013 tryouts a success Molinari happy with turnout and talent LUDLOW – With the initial tryouts nearly complete, the response has been better than expected. Pioneers head coach Federico Molinari was happy with the turnout and abilities of the players. The Pioneers were able to see over 40 players over the course of the two sessions. Players traveled from all over New England to show off their abilities for the Pioneers coaching staff. “We are fortunate that former players of the Pioneers are assistant or head coaches of teams throughout New England, and their ability to recommend quality players from their programs to potentially play for the Pioneers is exciting. They really care about the success of the Pioneers,” said head coach Federico Molinari. “We are hoping the weather cooperates so we can complete the new turf field at Lusitano Stadium to play outdoors,” said Pioneers general manager Greg Kolodziey. “Indoor training does not do the players justice as they do not have the ability to open up the field and use space the outdoor surface offers.” The WM Pioneers may add additional tryout dates in March or April for those who did not get a chance to participate this time around.
