Woman publishes 

book on adoption

WILBRAHAM - Christine 

M. Moran of Wilbraham 

has written a new children’s 

book about adoption titled 

“The Legacies of Trees”. Moran 

has served as PTO president 

for Mile Tree School and 

has provided free search angel 

services since 1996 for adopted 

adults and mothers looking 

to reunite. “Adoption Search 

Angels” generally volunteer 

their time and talents to help 

families touched by adoption. 

They seek answers for a birth 

mother or an adoptee reaching 

out to birth parents. 

Moran says she believes 

openness, honesty and family 

connections in adoption is 

detrimental to the psychological 

well being of adoptees and 

their descendants and that all 

adopted adults should have access 

to their own birth certificate. 

Unfortunately, she says, 

this is not always the case. 

During most adoption 

process the original birth certificate 

is sealed for 99 years 

and can only be opened with 

a judge’s order which requires 

a special hearing to attain and 

even then it will only be awarded 

in special circumstances, 

such as the release of medical 

records. “Adopted children 

face loss even in the most loving 

of homes. Our ancestors 

and family history help give 

us a sense of belonging and 

define who we are. Adoption 

is a life-long issue that deals 

with identity and the broken 

thread of family continuity,” 

commented Moran.

people in town know by now, 

Wilbraham will be celebrating 

its 250 th anniversary next year. 

And two people on the Wilbraham 

250 th Celebration Committee, 

Roberta Albano and Pat 

O’Connor, want to make sure that 

local students are involved in 

the celebration. 

Albano and 

O’Connor have been 

friends for years, and 

both are educators; 

Albano teaches at 

Springfield Technical 

Community College, 

and O’Connor 

worked for years in 

the Wilbraham elementary 

schools, where she currently still 

acts as a substitute teacher. 

Their friendship and background 

in education led them to

Ken Furst’s fascination 

with global events led 

him to the office of 

Afghanistan President 

Hamid Karzai. The journey to 

Kabul also opened his eyes to little-known 

realities in one of the 

world’s most volatile regions. 

President of the Momentum 

Group and former Wilbraham Finance 

Committee member, Furst 

was one of six Americans chosen 

to travel to Afghanistan, a trip 

sponsored by U.S. Ambassador 

to Afghanistan Ryan Crocker. 

All six people are members 

of the World Affairs Council of 

America, an independent organization 

whose aim is to keep 

the American public informed 

about what is happening around 

the world. Furst, a member of 

the World Affairs Council of 

Western Massachusetts, represented 

the Northeast, with other 

delegates coming from Virginia, 

North Caroline, Florida, Texas, 

and Utah. 

The six-day trip endeavored 

to cultivate grassroots diplomacy. 

When he returned earlier this 

month, Furst was eager to share 

what he learned. 

Before being selected to go 

to Afghanistan, Furst had already 

read seven books about it. He felt 

he had an understanding of the 

country and its culture, but going 

to Afghanistan showed him 

he had more to learn, especially 

about the current climate. 

Events in the past six to eight 

months, such as the burning of 

brainstorm about how 

they could involve the schools 

and students in the upcoming 

town milestone celebration. 

What they came up with, after 

Korans and the U.S. Marine staff 

sergeant alleged massacring of 16 

civilian men, women and children, 

have strained relations and 

prompted many here at home to 

urge quick withdrawal, Furst said. 

He expected Afghan public sentiment 

to resent Americans. 

“We met with 60 to 65 Afghans 

in depth. Some were in the 

government; some were not. To 

a person, they don’t want us to 

walk out,” Furst said. If we leave 

right now, the Taliban will regain 

its hold, and the social and economic 

progress will not just halt, 

but reverse, Furst said. If the Taliban 

regains its power, they will 

invite terrorists in, a real national 

security risk for our own country, 

Furst said. 

“The people don’t want us to 

stay forever and establish a colony, 

but they still don’t want us to 

leave precipitously,” he said. “I 

don’t think we know from here 

how much progress has been 

made.” 

Night Raids 

Even an individual who was 

most angry about the massacre 

told Furst that the Americans and 

international forces shouldn’t 

stop their night raids or leave 

Afghanistan, Furst said. In addition 

to American military troops, 

there are many international 

forces in Afghanistan, as well as 

private companies and individuals 

contracted to help build and 

maintain security and strengthen 

the country’s weakened governmental 

agencies.

Rotary Club’s Wine & Beer Tasting a delight 

Wilbraham Art League to 

add culture to the event

WILBRAHAM – The Wilbraham- 

Hampden Rotary Club has for years 

presented community service projects 

to make the quality of life enjoyable for 

town residents. From the sold-out 250person 

Senior Picnic they hold at Spec 

Pond in August, to the Town Christmas 

Tree Lighting hosted by Santa, they have 

worked tirelessly for young and old people 

alike. 

To support the many community service 

projects and seven scholarships given 

to high school seniors each May, the club 

is holding a Wine & Beer Tasting on Saturday, 

April 21 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at the 

Country Club of Wilbraham. For tickets

221-9122. There will be food items that 

complement wines and a silent auction, to 

complete the fundraiser. 

“This is the first year that the club 

has collaborated with the Wilbraham Art 

League to mix culture with oenology (the 

science of wine) delighting the senses,”

President Ann Marie Ottoson. “The Art 

League will display their work for viewing 

and for sale at the country club during 

the event,” said Ottoson. Wilbraham Art 

League and Rotary member Linda Lastoff 

is coordinating the art exhibition.

Russell Mitchell as its candidate

Wilbraham Board of Selectmen at 

the Democratic Caucus April 5 in 

the Brooks Room of the Wilbraham

Mitchell is a Wilbraham Firefighter/EMT 

and Potentate of the 

Melha Shriners. The Democrats 

also endorsed Gilles Turcotte for 

re-election to the Regional School 

Committee; Beverly Litchfield for 

Town Clerk and Jean Canosa-Al- 

bano for Library Trustee. The town ballot won’t be official 

until April 18. 

Wilbraham to get $552K in 

roads and bridges money 

BOSTON – State Rep. Angelo J. Puppolo Jr. (D- 

Springfield) announced last week the Massachusetts 

House of Representatives has passed legislation that 

will provide $552,727 for the maintenance of roads and 

bridges in the town of Wilbraham for the upcoming fiscal 

year. 

Overall, the bill authorizes $200 million for the 

maintenance and upkeep of municipal roads and bridges 

across the state. Puppolo said the Chapter 90 funding, 

“Recognized the importance of support for local infrastructure 

improvements and getting the funding to the 

cities and town as soon as possible, so construction can 

begin.”

State releases unemployment 

estimates 

BOSTON – The Executive office of Labor and 

Workforce Development reports that the February, 2012 

seasonally unadjusted unemployment rates were down in 

16 labor areas, up in four and unchanged in two. The unadjusted 

rate in Feb. 2012 was 7.5 percent, down .2 from 

January and down .7 from Feb. 2011. 

Planning Board to hold hearing 

about former Rice’s store 

WILBRAHAM – In a move aimed towards the purchasers 

of the former Rice’s Fruit Farm store, the Wilbraham 

Planning Board will hold a hearing on Wednesday, 

April 18 at 7:30 p.m. in Town Hall to air proposed zoning 

changes for Heritage Farm Stand development. 

According to planner John Pearsall, since the store 

is no longer connected to the orchards across the street, 

zoning bylaws need to be changed so that the new owners 

can sell agricultural and nonagricultural products. Details 

of the proposal are available in the Town Clerk’s Office.

Hampden Bulk Disposal Day 

April 28 

HAMPDEN - The Town of Hampden will be offering 

a Bulk Disposal Day at the Transfer Station on April 

28 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Residents will be allowed bulk 

items at a nominal fee per item, cash preferred. Air conditioners, 

refrigerators, freezers, dehumidifiers, TV’s and 

computer monitors will be accepted as well as construction 

materials and light bulbs containing mercury (fluorescent

shops and prepares the meals. This Easter she

Editorial 

Only you can prevent brush fires 

The unseasonably warm weather in March coupled 

with high winds and dry conditions has 

made the threat of brush and forest fires extremely 

high. Wilbraham alone has seen quite 

a few brush fires over the past few weeks. The last few 

weeks of March experienced fires almost every day and 

as many as three in one day March 23. They ranged from 

Three Rivers Road to Boston Road and Maynard Road. 

Recently the National Weather Service issued a fire 

weather warning and raised a red flag for much of Southern 

New England. The warning was in effect throughout 

the entire day and into the evening hours on several days 

last week. The Wilbraham Fire Department has been 

closely monitoring conditions. 

Do not throw caution to the wind…instead take extreme 

caution of the wind. The extremely dry air combined 

with gusty northwest winds and little rainfall over 

the recent weeks raised the red flag for any outdoor burning 

– meaning it is not permitted. Wilbraham Fire officials 

have advised that any fires that develop will have 

the potential to spread rapidly and get out of control, posing 

a threat to whatever surrounds the area, whether it be 

more forest or a home. Fire can spread faster than you 

can run in these conditions – do not risk having a fire 

getting out of control. 

In a typical season burning is permitted through May 

1, but more people do not start burning brush until mid 

April, when the weather is nice and yard work is being 

done. But, because we found ourselves with little snow 

and are not waiting on snow banks to melt, we are out in 

our yards earlier ready to get rid of all those limbs left 

behind by October’s devastating snowstorm. The conditions 

have lined up just perfectly to cause extremely

Following up last week’s review of research 

about community newspapers conducted by 

the research arm of the Missouri School of 

Journalism here are more facts about readers 

of community newspapers: 74 percent of those surveyed 

read a local newspaper each week. They spend 

about 38.95 minutes reading it and 73 percent said 

they read most or all of it. Forty-eight percent said 

they never read news online. 

Congratulations to the Wilbraham Raptors basketball 

team who went 17-1 to win the Atlantic 

Division Championship. As part of their celebration 

they rode in a limo to the Basketball 

Hall of Fame recently. The Raptors are 

Coaches Beauchamp, Gougeon and 

Poisson, Anthony Paulo, Tyler Poisson, 

Jack Normoyle, Kareen Hakim, 

Rob Koziol, Noah Gougeon, Chase 

Beauchamp and Joshua Willis. 

In last week’s Times we ran a photo 

of the Senior High Youth Fellowship 

group at Wilbraham United Church who 

took part in a demonstration against hunger 

overnight March 31 at the church. We 

want to expand on the efforts of Lindsey 

Bernard, one of the participants. Lindsey 

joined the 30-hour famine but she had 

to leave and wasn’t in the photo because 

she had to work a shift at Friendly’s where she maintained 

her fast, going above and beyond. The project 

was coordinated by Jeanne Westcott, Christian 

Education Director at the church. 

Don’t forget to stop in at the Wilbraham Library 

Brooks Room to see the work of the late artist Vickie 

Fritz, a member of the Wilbraham Art League and 

St. Cecilia’s Catholic Women’s Club. Her beautiful 

art will be on display until April 21. A reception will 

be held April 14 from 1 to 4 p.m. 

Dr. Melanie Van Amsterdam was featured in 

a December story in the Albuquerque Journal for 

her efforts in the Presbyterian Hospital at Home 

project there. In the program doctors and nurses visit 

patients at home throughout the day to give medication, 

adjust equipment and assess patients’ progress. 

Melanie is the lead physician. She says part of what 

she loves most about the work is seeing where her 

patients live. “Any time you go to somebody’s house, 

(to treat them) it’s hugely different than the hospital 

setting,” she says. Dr. Van Amsterdam is the daughter 

of Adrienne and John Van Amsterdam of West 

Colonial Road in Wilbraham.

Trinity is an average 6-year-old girl, 

who loves to play with her many friends 

from school. She’s in Kindergarten at 

Mile Tree School. She loves her class and 

teachers. Her support team is wonderful 

and is planning Trinity’s Wishing Star 

Ride and Benefit. Everyone has been such 

a blessing to Trinity. 

As a mother, when your child starts 

Kindergarten you get the butterflies and 

we probably worry more than our kids. 

Trinity was a trooper, always have been 

and always will be. She is an absolute inspiration 

to many. 

Trinity was born with a spinal cord 

tumor that was undetected until just before 

her 5th birthday. Due to the tumor, 

Trinity suffered from extremely painful 

seizures. The tumor was extracted at Boston 

Children’s on Dec. 14, 2010. She went

Debris removal a 

matter of civic pride 

How about a “Thorn” for the Wilbraham 

Selectmen who have failed to clean 

up the tornado tree and brush storm debris 

in the wooded areas in Wilbraham. The 

recent fire in Brimfield should serve as 

a wake-up call to the Selectmen that this 

debris is a fire hazard and a fire waiting 

to happen. 

The Selectmen made a major mistake 

last fall when they chose not to remove 

all the debris. Monson and Springfield 

are cleaning up their storm damaged 

woods; Wilbraham is not. I call it lack of 

civic pride. A prominent politician stated 

to me when we first moved here that 

Wilbraham lacks vision, that the leaders 

live in the past and never look to the 

future. Looking at this fire hazard, I sort 

of agree with him.

Scantic Valley YMCA schedules family events 

WILBRAHAM – The Scantic Valley 

YMCA Family Center will be starting 

several new programs during the month 

of April. Starting Saturday, April 7 and 

again on May 5 and June 2 the YMCA 

will be holding a “Youth Night Out” for 

children ages 4 to 11 from 6 to 8 p.m. 

Activities will include a movie, 

snacks, games, and activities, including 

swimming. The cost of the event is $12 

for members and $20 for non members. 

Pre-register by calling 596-2749. 

The YMCA will also be holding 

an “Overnight Extravaganza”. Children 

will be dropped off at 8 p.m. on Saturday, 

April 14 and will enjoy night swimming, 

flashlight tag gym games and 

more. Snacks and drinks will be provided 

in addition to a breakfast served 

before the 10 a.m. pick up on Sunday, 

however no dinner will be served. 

Forms must be signed by a parent 

of guardian at the time of registration.

The promise of Spring

Exciting news: After weeks of 

saying it was too soon, finally it 

came time to start the tomatoes! 

My five-year-old’s tiny fingers 

carefully dropped one seed at a time into 

the furrows I had made in the soil. 

The younger sister gave them each a 

squirt from the mister bottle. Now, all we 

have to do is provide some bottom heat 

and wait a few days for a miracle to happen. 

After 20-plus years of watching this 

process, I am still excited to witness it 

each and every time. You can too! Here 

are a few tips to get you started. 

Choose and sterilize your pots: I 

select an open container or shallow pot 

to start my seedlings, a different one for 

each vegetable or flower I want to grow. 

You can use one large flat for different tomato 

varieties, labeling as you go, since 

they will sprout about the same time. It 

is unwise to mix lettuce with peppers, for 

example, since germination times and requirements 

likely differ. If you reuse pots 

from year to year it is wise to wash them 

well first with soap and water, then a 10 

percent bleach solution. Square half-gallon 

containers, yogurt cups etc. all make 

great containers for seed-starting, just be 

sure to poke a few drainage holes in the

bottom of each one before use. 

Purchase seed-starting mix: I always 

buy a small bag of growing medium 

especially suited to seed starting. 

The ingredients will be finely milled - 

just perfect for covering small seed ever 

so lightly. You probably won’t see soil on 

the list of ingredients - too heavy and unless 

sterilized is potentially contaminated 

with weed seeds and disease organisms. 

For bulk, the soil in growing medium 

is replaced with “essentially sterile” ingredients 

like peat moss or coir, with 

vermiculite to hold water and perlite to 

drain readily, plus starter fertilizer. 

To cover or not to cover: Barring a 

few exceptions, determine whether your 

seeds need a covering of “soil” after 

planting by their size. Seeds large enough 

to be handled should be planted in shallow 

furrows and then covered with the 

surrounding soil. Tiny seed can be surface 

sown and gently pressed into the soil with 

the flat edge of a label or the bottom of 

another pot. 

Search out bottom heat: If you 

think that indoor seed-starting might become 

a regular spring activity at your 

house, invest in some cables to generate 

bottom heat. Seeds will sprout faster 

and more consistently by using them. For 

those of you who will start a flat or two 

of plants, find a spot in your house that 

maintains 70 degrees. I have set plants on 

a shelf above the radiator, on top of the 

freezer, and even close to the woodstove. 

All will work. 

Provide supplemental light: Once 

seeds have germinated it is time to provide 

the seedlings with direct light for 14 

hours a day. The easiest way to achieve 

this is purchase a shop light with two 

fluorescent bulbs. Position the plants just 

inches away from the lights to produce 

the stockiest seedlings possible. Bottom 

heat is not necessary for growing on except 

for in the coldest locations, otherwise 

average household temperatures are 

just fine.

the seed unfurling two large cotyledon 

leaves. Soon after that true leaves grow. 

Transplant at this stage - roots will be 

sized right and not intertwined with those 

of their neighbor. Remember the mantra 

“two leaves but only one stem” and hold 

the seedling by a leaf when inserting it 

into its individual cell or pot. If it should 

tear you have another; tear the stem and 

the plant is kaput. 

Don’t skimp on the last step: Fast 

forward to May. Your transplants look 

great. They have received ample light, 

water and even a splash or two of liquid 

fertilizer. Don’t forget to gradually acclimatize 

them to the outdoors before planting 

them in the garden. It is a whole new 

world out there with bright sun, strong 

winds and heavy downpours! Prepare 

your plants by first setting them out in a 

sheltered spot for just a few hours a day. 

Over the course of the next several days 

work up to full sun all day long; leave 

them out at night as well. Care taken here 

will guarantee all your hard work (fun!) 

was not for naught.

Blending flavors at a Westfield bistro

My faithful culinary companion was otherwise 

committed so I made a quick call to 

a close friend who had been pleading with 

me to allow her to tag along on one of my 

epicurean excursions. Considering she grew up in the 

greater Boston area and was very accustomed to dining 

at upscale and often elegant venues, I thought why not. 

It never hurts to judge a meal through another’s palate. 

With another accomplice in dining detection, we were 

off to School Street Bistro in Westfield. 

We were seated promptly and, after our server’s tantalizing 

presentation of the day’s specials, we ordered 

drinks, a soft drink for my companion and martini for 

me. The drinks were served with warm, sliced French 

bread, accompanied by a tasty dill and garlic spread and 

a salad of baby greens, shredded carrots and red cabbage 

for color – both included with our meal. 

Salad 

We both chose the tomato vinaigrette dressing for 

our salad. As, I’m sure, you know, while healthy, salad 

can be a bit bland and the dressing can make or break it. 

This dressing needed to be bold and it wasn’t. I borrowed 

the lemon slice from my friend’s soda, squeezed some of 

the juice into the dressing and…Voila! A dressing with a 

little punch. 

I selected the Apple Spiced Gingertini ($7.50) from 

the Bistro Specialty Cocktail menu. A blend of Grey 

Goose Vodka, Apple Liquor, Cointreau, Cranberry and 

lime juice made for a decadent drink meant to be sipped 

slowly and savored throughout the meal which is just 

what I did. 

My companion also ordered the Soup of the Day ($5), 

a mix of chicken, tomato, rice, carrots, onion and a hint

meat partnered with the crunchy texture of cashews. The 

pièce de résistance was the apple cider demi-glace topping, 

a delectably sweet finish to each tasty bite. The pork 

was accompanied by roasted new potatoes seasoned with 

garlic, parsley and a touch of salt along side a mixture of 

broccoli, cauliflower and sliced carrots cooked al dente. 

My companion opted for one of the specials 

– Drunkin’ Scallops ($26). She said it was because she 

loved scallops, but I think the name intrigued her. The 

scallops were pan-seared with Scotch and presented over 

black pepper fettuccine with Alfredo sauce and parmesan 

cheese. Pairing scallops with fettuccine never occurred 

to her, but she was very pleased with the result adding, 

“The pepper gives it a pop in your mouth.” This is a good 

thing. 

School Street Bistro’s interior mixes brick and what 

appeared to be the building’s original wood floor with a 

cozy, rich tavern-style bar and a dining room with ceiling-high 

arch windows that allowed the evening’s fading 

sun to shed a soft light that warmed the room.

Local artists do well at Spring Art Exhibition 

Christina Mastrangelo honored 

for her oil on canvas

Much like they have for the previous 18 years, 

this year’s Monson’s Annual Spring Exhibition 

and Sale painted a picture of success. 

“I know I say this a lot, but this year 

truly produced the best quality of work ever,” said longtime 

Monson Art Show Committee member Maureen 

Solomon. “All of the work that was accepted and even 

some that weren’t, were truly exceptional.” 

This year’s juried show – hosted by the Monson Arts 

Council –“Imagine That!” brought artists from throughout 

the Northeast to compete for the cash awards totaling 

$4,000. 

The Best of Show $1,000 prize went to Christina 

Mastrangelo of Wilbraham for her oil on canvas, “Alexandra 

in Profile.” 

“I went to high school with Alexandria and have always 

admired her unique beauty,” she said. 

Mastrangelo perfected her technique in Italy and has 

been painting professionally for the past three years. 

“Her silhouette is similar to that of those painted 

during the Renaissance,” she said. 

Jurors were unanimous in their decision, adding that 

they applauded Mastrangelo’s skill and vision. 

“This portrait is a beautiful example of using the Renaissance 

sfumato technique of modulating tone to define 

volume, as opposed to line and edge,” said judge Sue 

Katz. “More importantly, the mood of quiet and calm and 

even a self-confident presence engages the viewer.” 

President of Monson Savings Bank, Steven Lowell, 

also found himself returning to Mastrangelo’s piece and 

noted that it was too, the “best of show,” and offered up 

the President’s Award to the piece as well.

WILBRAHAM – A new play, “Falkland 

Road” written by local playwright Colin Tracy, 

will be staged at Evangel Assembly of God on 

Stony Hill Road in Wilbraham on Saturday, April 

21 at 7 p.m. for a special performance. 

A cast of 10 from the University of Massachusetts 

at Amherst will be coming to Evangel 

to perform this play as part of an effort to raise 

money for Project Rescue, an organization that 

works to rescue women from the sex trade across 

the world. 

“Falkland Road” is a play that focuses on the 

international sex trade as it exists in the United 

States. It focuses on those people who work in 

the industry as traffickers and is a story of one 

man’s journey from complacency to struggle to 

redemption. 

There is no cost to attend this performance, 

and a freewill offering will be taken afterwards to 

benefit Project Rescue. Due to the nature of the

Problems in Afghanistan are complex

of nearly 30 years of war is still evident, 

Furst said. 

“Kabul is on the mend, but it’s not 

pretty. At first I thought there were no traffic 

signals. Then, I saw that they were there, 

but not working.” On the street, among the 

automobile traffic were donkey-pulled 

carts and vendors pushing banana-laden 

wheelbarrows. Threading through the traffic 

were children begging. “I saw a thousand 

possible accidents a day, and none of 

them happened,” Furst said. 

Bullet-Proof SUV’s 

The six World Affairs Council members 

met with students, women activists, 

members of the Afghanistan Parliament, 

business people, and individuals. They 

stayed in the American Embassy compound 

and traveled to various spots in Kabul 

in bullet-proof SUVs with a speciallytrained 

driver at the wheel. “Our cars were 

monitored the whole time,” Furst said. “It 

is a war zone.” The Americans felt safe, 

however. “I had to believe that Ambassador 

Crocker would not have us come if he 

felt we would be in danger,” he said. They 

traveled to a bazaar, two schools, and five 

government ministries.

was a private meeting with President Karzai, 

something few American civilians

that the problems in Afghanistan are complex. 

“All these different elements touch 

each other. There’s on singular solution. 

It’s like trying to solve a Rubik’s cube,” 

Furst said. Still, he said he is optimistic 

that, if the international community stays 

the course, the outcome will be positive 

and long-lasting. 

“Our government has some really 

good people there,” Furst said.

Library alters return 

policy for media 

WILBRAHAM - Beginning April 

1, Wilbraham Public Library users will 

be able to return DVDs, music CDs, and 

audiobooks in the aluminum book drop 

located on the side of the building. 

Improvements to media cases have 

made them sturdier and better able to resist 

damage than in past years according 

to Library Director Karen Demers. Additionally, 

materials returned after hours 

will be counted as returned on that day. 

“For example, if a DVD is due back on 

a Thursday, and you aren’t able to get to 

the library before we close at 5 p.m., but 

put it in the book drop before we open on 

Friday morning, that DVD will be considered 

returned on time,” said Demers. 

“Since the library is only open three 

evenings a week, we hope that this new 

return policy will be more convenient

offering a free E-Reader Workshop on Saturday, April 14

readers get acquainted with their e-reader (Nooks and 

Kindles) or to simply offer an opportunity to try one before

your personal e-reader. Bring your own e-reader device 

or try the devices she has available for class use. Keech 

will show where to find digital literature online – to borrow 

or keep. She will also show how to download and 

transfer content as well as how to digitally manage all 

downloads. Also, she will cover e-reader basics such as 

changing fonts, bookmarking and deleting text.

250 Committee looking for Student Ambassadors

The program, said Albano, “Is an involvement, and 

not a contest” and is open to any high school student 

who is a resident of Wilbraham or Hampden, including 

those who are home-schooled. 

The vision is for students to join in the community 

spirit and history making by designing, creating, and 

implementing a town history project that will be presented 

at one of the town celebration events. 

“We want the kids to do whatever comes from 

their passion or talent, and we want them to have ownership,” 

says O’Connor. For instance, someone who is 

involved in drama might write a play about the history 

of the town, or a musician might write a song. Other 

potential mediums might be print, video/technology, 

art, live performance or community service. 

“We don’t know where or when the projects will 

be showcased – that will be driven by the projects 

themselves,” said Albano. 

May 25 Deadline 

Some of the events planned for the year include 

the kick-off First Night celebration on New Year’s Eve 

2012, as well as a parade, ball, road race, and community 

picnic with the Air Force Band at Fountain Park. 

Albano and O’Connor have already made a presentation 

to the Minnechaug Student Council, have reached 

out to Wilbraham & Monson Academy, and intend to 

contact Cathedral High School. The two emphasize that 

the program is also open to home-schooled students. 

In order to apply for the program, students must 

fill out a brief application and submit it by May 25. The 

applications are available at the Wilbraham Town Hall, 

the Wilbraham Public Library, Minnechaug, and online 

at www.hwrsd.org, under the Minnechaug student/parent 

page or www.wilbraham-ma.gov. 

The application indicates that “Your project should 

reflect some facet of Wilbraham history during the last 

250 years or the last 50 years since the 1963 Bicentennial 

celebration.” Students also need to provide brief descriptions 

of their ideas or projects and what medium they 

intend to use. In addition, ambassadors must be willing 

to attend some events during the town celebration. 

Albano and O’Connor also hope that teachers in 

town will encourage their students to participate, and 

they would love to see high school students working on 

projects with younger students. As part of the celebration, 

at a date to be determined in June 2013 all schools 

in town will have a celebratory day. 

If you are a high school student in Wilbraham or 

Hampden, consider applying for the ambassador program 

and participating in the 250 th celebration. It’s 

your chance to be a part of history in the making, and 

perhaps you’ll be able to look back during the 300 th 

year celebration and tell your children and grandchildren, 

“That was my project!”

Falcons fly high over Agawam

It was definitely the start to the regular 

season that the Minnechaug boys 

lacrosse team was looking for when 

they took the field for the first time 

in the regular season at Agawam High 

last Thursday afternoon. 

Minnechaug’s huge scoring attack 

pummeled the Agawam goal during the 

first quarter and the Falcons did not look 

back as they left Harmon A. Smith Field 

with a 16-0 drubbing of the Brownies. 

Agawam was a formidable opponent 

last season for several teams as they rode 

a wave of experience and momentum to a 

10-2 start and a 12-8 season that included 

their first playoff appearance in several 

years. 

But the Falcons did not see a trace of 

that team on Thursday afternoon as they 

had five players score multiple goals in 

the game. 

Just a few minutes into the game, 

Minnechaug had built a 3-0 lead and 

started getting creative with their goal 

scoring. 

One thing plaguing Agawam during 

the early going of the game was the 

stacking penalties they were suffering. 

Minnechaug took advantage of nearly every 

power play the Brownies gave them. 

With 5:11 left in the first quarter, the Falcons 

went on another man-advantage. 

They moved the ball around the goal 

several times before Reed McLean made 

a side-armed shot, a line drive that went 

into the upper part of the goal to make 

it 4-0. 

This time they did not waste very 

many seconds and scored almost immediately 

after the next faceoff. Frank Kochanowski 

scored the next goal, running 

a circle around the goal and shooting on 

the run to make it 5-0. 

Agawam suffered another penalty a 

short time later and Kochanowski scored 

again just seconds after the advantage 

started for the Falcons. 

It was Kochanowski’s second goal of 

his hat trick day. Other players scoring 

hat tricks were McLean and Conor Murphy. 

Seconds after Kochanowski’s second 

goal of the game, a long pass off the 

faceoff went all to near the Agawam goal 

and a waiting Joe Christman, who shot 

low to make it 7-0. 

Nick Abbott finished off the eight 

goal first quarter with a score with 30 

seconds remaining.

WILBRAHAM – The spring seasons 

began in full force. Here is a roundup of 

Minnechaug sports. 

BASEBALL 

The defending Western Mass champs 

remained undefeated with a pair of wins, 

3-2 over Holyoke and 11-2 against Pittsfield. 

Kevin White was the hero in the Holyoke 

win with a two-run double in the top 

of the seventh to put the Falcons ahead, 

after Holyoke had taken a lead in sixth. 

Greg Heineman was superb over six innings 

allowing just one run and striking 

out eight. Jason Erhardt got the save. 

They did not need any late game 

heroics against Pittsfield. They spotted 

the Generals a run in the top of the first 

and tied it up in the bottom of the inning. 

After scoring single runs in the third and 

fourth, Minnechaug broke the game open 

with a six spot in the fifth. The threesome 

of Bryan Goossens, Tim Cebula and Erhardt 

allowed just three hits. Heineman 

had two hits, while White and Kevin Baker 

each drove in a pair of runs. 

The Falcons are 3-0 overall and 2-0 

in Valley Wheel play. 

VOLLEYBALL 

The volleyball team actually got underway 

two weeks ago with the Falcons 

beating the Northfield Mount Hermon 

School in a tight 3-2 match. This was a 

tight affair, with Minnechaug dropping 

the first set 25-21. Winning the next two 

25-17 and 27-25, they had a 2-1 lead. 

Northfield tied them with another 25-21 

game, sending the match into a tiebreaker. 

The Falcons won that 15-11. Cameron 

Hirose and Zack Poremba led the Falcons 

with 12 and 10 kills respectively. Mitchell 

Keegan had 17 assists. 

They went the distance in a 3-2 loss 

to Putnam. The scores went 17-21, 25- 

18, 19-25, 25-19 setting up the tiebreaker 

that went 6-15 with Putnam in control. 

Brendon Gilmour led Minnechaug with 

10 kills.

beat Northampton in a Saturday morning 

matinee. They spotted the Blue 

Devils a run in the top of the first and 

then answered with four in the bottom 

of the inning. A six-run third effectively 

put the game away. 

A hit by pitch, a double and a wild 

pitch got Northampton the quick lead 

in the top of the first inning, but Minnechaug 

did not take any time to respond. 

Sam Mariani led off with a 

single; then with one out, Erika Gouin 

and Vicki Beaulieu also singled, the latter 

driving in Mariani to tie the game. 

The next batter, Taylor Krol then untied 

it with a drive to center. By the time the 

ball got even back to the infield, Krol 

was crossing the plate with a home run. 

The Minnechaug lead was now 4-1 and 

it would get considerably larger. 

But before that happened the Blue 

Devils did put together a couple of 

threats. In the second, they looked as 

though they would right back in the 

game, when they led off the inning with 

two singles. But Gouin struck out the 

next two hitters and got the third out 

on a grounder to get out of the inning 

unscathed. In the third a single and 

an error brought up the tying run with 

two outs, but once again Gouin had the 

strikeout pitch going.

Pete Chapman, PGA professional from 

the Country Club of Wilbraham to offer 

junior golf clinics over April vacation for 

ages 7-16 of varying skill levels. 

The clinics will be held at the Country 

Club of Wilbraham and limited to 10 

participants. The one-hour clinics will be 

held April 17-20, with a cost of $60.

Falcons looking to spike competition

WILBRAHAM – The Minnechaug 

volleyball has been one of a handful of 

teams at the top of the competition over the 

past few years. After a semifinal and two 

finals appearances, the Falcons fell off a bit 

in 2011, making it as far as the quarterfinals. 

This year they hope to get back. 

They will do so with less experience 

than they have had in the pat. There are 

three seniors, two of which are returnees: 

Matthew Budrow and Cameron Hirose, 

both outside hitters. Mike Forest, also an 

outside hitter is a newcomer to the team

Falcons look for another strong season

WILBRAHAM - The Minnechaug 

boys’ lacrosse team had been one of the 

best in Western Mass for some time. They 

have consistently been a force in the regular 

season as well as in the tournament. 

But it has been five years since their last 

finals appearance in 2007. This year they 

are aiming to get back. In 2011, they were 

12-6 and garnered the fourth seed. 

The Falcons will enter the 2012 season 

with a largely veteran team, consisting 

of 13 seniors and six juniors. That is a 

lot of experience. 

The offense will be headed by attackers, 

seniors Jesse Vieira and Anthony 

Masi, along with juniors Joe Christman, 

Nick Borysyk and Frank Kochanowksi. 

Sophomore Nick Beauchamp may also 

see time in the attack role. 

There are senior midfielders, Conor 

Murphy, Samuel Spencer, Reed McLean, 

Chris Kwiatkowski and Nick Abbott as 

well as juniors Kevin Collins, Nick Dailey, 

Ty Trebbe and on occasion Borysyk. 

Beauchamp is also pegged to play some 

midfield, as is freshman Josh Henry. 

The seniors on defense are Thomas 

Charette, Drew Trebbe and Tony Barrett 

along with sophomore, Sam Bianco. Another 

sophomore for added depth is Ryan 

Mack. The back end will also be secured 

with senior Josh Dusel and Sam Wheaton, 

a junior. Russell Mooney returns as the 

coach.

ing the third 25-10. Athol finished off the match at 3-1 

with a 25-14 score in the fourth set. 

LACROSSE 

The boys team began the season with three wins in 

three tries. They topped Agawam 16-0 in their opener. 

They jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the first quarter and 

never looked back. Conor Murphy, Frank Kochanowksi 

and Reed McLean had three goals apiece to led 

the way. John Dusel with eight saves and Sam Wheaton 

with 2 preserved the shutout. 

Four goals in the first and four in the second gave 

the Falcons an 8-1 halftime lead over Westfield on the 

way to an 11-5 win. McLean tallied four times, while 

Nicholas Beauchamp found the net for three goals. 

It was a bit closer in their 10-7 win over Conard. 

The Falcons led 4-1 after the first and maintained the 

three goal edge at the half at 6-3. Conard cut it to two 

at 6-4 after three, but the Falcons kept them at arms 

length the rest of the way. McLean had five of the 

Falcons’ goals, while Dusel stopped 17 shots. 

TRACK 

The boys beat Longmeadow 79-66 with Jack 

O’Keefe (100-meter dash), Andrew Ward (110-meter 

hurdles), Sam Fisher (1 mile), Jordan Leckey (2 mile), 

Peter Schultz (long jump) and Jacob Clements (high 

jump) each winning one event. 

The girls dropped their meet to East Longmeadow, 

82-58. They did get a pair of first from Abigail 

Boyd in the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes. 

TENNIS 

The boys swept past their first two opponents 

Central and Cathedral with 5-0 victories. Over Central 

Patrick, O’Shea, Brian Gurski and Alex Smith 

each won in straight sets, while the doubles winners 

were Naveed Cheraghi/Tom Sullivan and Alex Reed/ 

Christopher Weyant, also in staright sets. 

With Cathedral, it was O’Shea, Gurski and a forfeit 

in the singles. Doubles winners were Tom Knight/ 

Smith and Rob Knight/Alex Manzi. No Falcon lost 

even a set. 

The girls split their two matches. They started the 

season losing 3-2 to Agawam. The wins came in the 

first and third singles from Eve Sullivan and Eve Falk. 

They rebounded nicely with a 4-1 win over Northampton. 

Sullivan had a pair of shutouts in the first singles, 

while Jaclyn Mercadante won the second singles. 

In the doubles it was Falk/Rosa Contrino and Kylie 

Eisenberg/Katherine Weyant.

of reach with a six-run third. With one out, Beaulieu 

doubled, she moved to third on a groundout and then 

came home when Lauren Chapin reached on a dropped 

third strike. Chapin moved to third on a Katie Patterson 

base hit and scored when the pitcher dropped a toss back 

from the catcher. A triple by Madison Babula plated Patterson. 

Paulina Modestow singled in Babula and then 

she went to second when Mariani reached on an error. 

A wild pitch moved both runners into scoring position 

where they scored when Dani Torchia reached on the 

fifth Northampton error of the inning. When the third 

out was finally made 10 batters had come to the plate and 

the score was 10-1. 

Minnechaug got single runs in the fourth and fifth, as 

Beaulieu tripled and scored on a wild pitch in the fourth, 

while Mariani who had singled came home on a another 

wild pitch. Meanwhile Gouin set down six of seven batters 

in those two innings. 

The Blue Devils finally put something together in 

the sixth as they loaded the bases with no outs. A two -un

saw the lead off hitter reach on an error, but then she retired 

the next three to end the game. 

Gouin went the distance, allowing just six hits in the 

game. She struck out seven and walked two along the 

hit batsman. Beaulieu went three for three and scored 

three times, while Mariani was two for four, also scoring 

three runs. Gouin helped her cause with two hits and 

Modestow chipped in with a pair from the ninth spot. 

Krol had just one hit, but it was a big as it gave Minnechaug 

a lead they would not relinquish. 

The Falcons lost a game earlier in the week, 7-5 to 

Ludlow. They fell behind quickly as the Lions scored 

five times before Minnechaug even got up. The Falcons 

got one back in the bottom of the inning and by the fifth 

inning had closed to 5-4. A two run Ludlow seventh was 

met by one run for Minnechaug in their final at-bat. The 

Falcons had only four hits, two of which were by Beaulieu. 

Torchia had a home run in the game as well. The 

Falcons record is now 2-1.

What better way for kids to 

work off that winter energy 

then by signing up 

for the Track and Field 

program? Since it began, 

the track and field program 

has been a huge success 

and continues to grow. 

This is a great way 

for boys and girls in 

grades two - eight to take 

part in multiple athletic 

events, while still being 

on a team. With all the 

events that this program 

offers, every child is sure 

to find one they enjoy. 

Twice Per Week 

A big change to the 

program this year is for the 

younger age group. Children 

in grades 2 - 4 will now practice 

twice per week. The events offered to 

the younger age group will be geared 

towards their skill level, and will allow 

them to grow into these events. It is a 

fantastic sport which allows younger 

children to be committed to a sport, 

without a large financial obligation.

The older group will continue as 

it has in past years. They will have the 

opportunity to try a number of different 

events on the track and in the field. 

These events include sprinting, distance 

running, hurdling, jumping, and 

throwing. Most track and field athletes 

try a new event each year which keeps

track and field is a great 

sport to meet new people 

and socialize with your 

friends, while still getting 

a great workout.

Spring meeting of Wilbraham Community 

Gardens to sprout on Earth Day 

WILBRAHAM - The annual spring 

meeting for the Wilbraham Community 

Gardens will be held at the Wilbraham 

Town Hall on Sunday, April 22, Earth 

Day at noon in the Selectmen’s Meeting 

Room. 

Naturalist and Landscaper John Root 

will be a guest speaker at this meeting. 

His presentation will include “Edible Perennial 

Gardening and Landscaping”. 

Gardens coordinator Melissa Graves 

of the Conservation Commission is urging 

people to attend because there are many 

activities involved with the project this 

season. 

The Wilbraham Community Gardens 

is located on Monson Road in Wilbraham 

and is available to residents and nonresidents 

for a fee of $25 per 25 x 50 plot. 

The plots are on a “first come, first serve” 

basis with returning gardeners having seniority 

on location. 

Graves said she has already received 

close to 50 percent of renewals already 

so interested gardeners should attend the 

April 22 meeting to get more details and

Red Sox off to rough start

gentlemen boys 

and girls and 

welcome to the 

Beanepot. Uh-oh, there 

is fear in Red Sox Nation 

that things haven’t changed 

at all in the Red Sox clubhouse. 

Boston has begun 

the season 0-3 it should be 

noted that by the time you read this 

perhaps they have righted themselves 

in Toronto. 

If they have then ok, but, if not, 

they will come home with a losing 

record and many questions about the 

make up of their team. Let me remind 

you the Yankees have also started 0-3 

as well. Let’s examine what’s going 

on with the Sox shall we? 

First as far as I can tell the clubhouse 

is fine, but the pitching has been 

a disaster. Being swept by the Tigers 

is not horrible in fact I’ve picked them 

to win the World Series. Jon Lester 

pitched very well, but Josh Beckett 

was beyond awful as was Clay Buchholz. 

Then there is the issue of the 

closer. The injury to Andrew Bailey 

caught everybody by surprise so 

Bobby V. decided that Mark Melanson 

and Alfredo Aceves would fill in. Bad 

move because Alfredo is not a closer, 

he’s either a long relief or should be in 

the rotation. To me Daniel Bard belongs 

in the bullpen somewhere and 

Vicente Padilla should be 

the closer. 

Pitching isn’t the only 

issue, Jacoby Ellsbury is off 

to a slow start, and Kevin 

Youkilis has been worse 

and was benched on Sunday. 

If this keeps up Bobby 

may ask Terry Francona if 

he wants his old job back! 

A couple of victories in Toronto will 

quiet the fans and get them in a festive 

atmosphere for the home opener 

on Friday, if they don’t they will be 

booing everybody including me. I’m 

confident this team will find its rhythm 

and right the ship. 

Congratulations are in order to the 

Boston Bruins on fixing their issues 

and finishing strong and now will defend 

the Stanley Cup with an opening 

series against the Washington Capitals. 

Everyone is rested and ready and 

yes, they do have a chance to repeat, 

it will be tough but doable. A tip of 

the helmet to Boston College for again 

winning the national championship in 

the NCAA Tournament. A great job 

again turned in by coach Jerry York 

and his players. The Eagles end the 

season with 19 straight wins, amazing.

Regional Student Council has announced 

that at the Massachusetts Association 

of Student Councils (MASC) 

Annual State Conference on March 

9 the Student Council received the 

Massachusetts Association of Student 

Councils Silver Council of Excellence 

Award. 

The award is given to those student 

councils who complete various 

school and community activities and 

events throughout the year. This is the 

third consecutive year that Minnechaug 

has received a Council of Excellence 

Award. 

Minnechaug also received a Top 

Ten Project Award for MASC. In the 

fall, the Student Council collected almost 

1,200 pounds of food from neighbors 

to restock the local food banks 

after the October Halloween Weekend 

Nor’easter. The project was chosen by 

the MASC executive board as one of 

the top projects in the state. 

Minnechaug also has three Commonwealth 

Award recipients. The 

awards are given to students who are 

highly active in Student Council, volunteer 

to chair committees, and often 

do not receive recognition for their outstanding 

efforts. The Commonwealth 

recipients’ names are: Brandon Gilmour, 

Drew Mapplethorpe, and Amanda 

Robinson. 

The Five-Star Council Award was 

also awarded to the high school. The 

Five–Star award is given to student 

councils who attend all five major leadership 

training opportunities throughout 

the year, including the MASC Summer 

Conference.

Academy students travel far and 

wide during school vacation 

WILBRAHAM – Students from the Wilbraham & 

Monson Academy had the opportunity to travel on school 

sponsored trips during their March break that included 

India, England and Italy. “The program was designed to 

give students a deeper understanding of the places, people 

and culture they study at the school,” said Academy 

spokesperson Meghan Rothschild. 

Rothschild said, Wilbraham residents, Andrew 

Faultisch and Heather Little were amongst a group who 

traveled to India and learned about the economic shifts 

within the world’s largest democracy. Students who 

toured England spent time in the historical sites of London 

and the students who traveled to Italy explored the 

Italian art which ranged from the Ancient Romans to 

modern designers. 

The Academy’s varsity baseball team and softball 

team also had the opportunity to participate in a spring 

training program in Orlando, Fla. where they prepared 

for their spring season.

(Editor’s note: The TIMES spotlights the intern program at Minnechaug Regional High School. This 

is the next in a series on interns in the Career Education Program at Minnechaug advised by coordinator 

Paula Talmadge.) 

For the love of Espanol 

Riley Brennan’s internship in the Foreign 

Language Department developed because 

of her ongoing interest in the Spanish language. 

After taking all the Spanish courses 

offered at Minnechaug, she still wanted more as she 

prepared to major in Spanish in college. 

Now after just a few months working with the 

foreign language teachers, Riley has changed her 

major to Education and wants to be a teacher. She 

appreciates that her mentor, Andrea Tarczynski, has 

introduced her to every aspect of a teacher’s job 

– from administrative tasks to the classroom. Riley 

has experienced the rewarding career of teaching by 

living it every day. 

One task that Riley enjoys is working in the faculty 

copy room. Not only has she gotten to know 

teachers that she had never met before but she also 

feels great knowing that her assistance with clerical 

duties allows the classroom teachers to focus more 

on their lessons and their students. Another highlight 

for Riley was planning and implementing Foreign 

Language Week – especially the culminating 

activity when delicious foods from all over the world 

are enjoyed by all. 

Mrs. Tarczynski describes Riley as a conscientious, 

self-reliant and independent worker – a great 

asset to the department and a pleasure to work with.

Mass Medical Society calls attention to concussions 

WALTHAM, Mass. – This month’s 

health tip from the Massachusetts Medical 

Society, the statewide association of 

physicians, covers concussions. 

A concussion is a traumatic brain 

injury caused by a blow to the head that 

jars the brain’s soft tissue. The tissue 

then hits the hard skull, resulting in the 

brain malfunctioning. A concussion can

WILBRAHAM - Marlene A. (Wilder) 

Boynton of Wilbraham passed away 

April 8, 2012. She was born in Brattleboro, 

Vt. on Sept. 16, 1936 to Elmer 

Wilder and Mildred (Neilson) Snow. She 

lived in the Bondsville section of Palmer 

for many years, until 1983 when she relocated 

to Wilbraham. Until her retirement 

in 1991, she operated her own cleaning 

service. Marlene enjoyed working in her 

garden and took great pride in her flower 

beds, which came up every year with great 

beauty. She loved cooking and could be 

found more often than not, near her stove. 

She also enjoyed her occasional trips to 

Mohegan Sun. She was predeceased by 

her daughter, Brenda King, her brothers, 

Greg Wilder and Brian Wilder, her parents 

and her stepson Richard Boynton, II. 

Marlene will be immensely missed by her 

husband of 38 years, Richard Boynton I, 

her daughter Cheryl King, her son Larry 

King and her step-children; Daniel Boynton, 

Deanne Sidur and Natasha Bourdeau, 

and 10 grandchildren and a great-grandson. 

Memorial Service will be Friday, 

April 13 at 7 p.m. at Wilbraham Funeral

heal. 

Concussions aren’t just confined to 

organized sports. The Centers for Disease 

Control lists the five leading causes 

of concussions as bicycling, football, 

basketball, playground activities, and 

was active in the Women’s Christian Fellowship. 

Eleanor enjoyed square dancing 

and was an active member of the “Wheel 

C” club and also enjoyed bowling, traveling 

and playing cards. Eleanor will 

be deeply missed by her husband of 61 

years Thomas Gernux. She also leaves 

three sons; Richard and his wife Elaine of 

Hampden, David and his wife Joanne of 

Hampden and Tom and his wife Carolyn 

of Enfield, Conn., and six grandchildren 

Eleanor was predeceased by her son John 

in 1974 and her brother George King in 

2009. Funeral Service was April 11 at 

Grace Union Church. A reception in Fellowship 

Hall was held following the Service. 

Burial was at the convenience of the 

family. Eleanor’s family is grateful for the 

compassionate care she received from the 

staff at Palmer Healthcare Center. Memorial

James McMaster 

SPRINGFIELD - James 

“Kevin” McMaster, 64 of 

Springfield died April 1, 2012 

in Baystate Medical Center, Springfield. 

Kevin, a son of the late James T. and 

Katherine (Sheip) McMaster was born in 

Springfield on March 22, 1948. Raised 

in Springfield he graduated from Springfield 

Trade High School and was on the 

school’s swim team. In his youth, Kevin 

was a member and enjoyed going to the 

Springfield Boys Club. He was employed 

for the past six years as a customer service 

representative at Penske Truck Rental in 

Chicopee. He previously worked as office 

supervisor for 25 years with Solar Trucking, 

served as shop steward at AMI Truck 

Leasing, and was a limousine driver for 

the Limo Connection. Kevin served his 

country with the United States Army during 

the Vietnam War. He was a member 

and Past Commander of American Legion 

Gunther-Rowley Post 293 of East 

Longmeadow. Kevin was a little league 

coach and also coached the Interstate 91 

Hockey league. He was a lifelong resident 

of Springfield and a communicant of 

St. Patrick’s Church and was head usher 

at the 4 p.m. Mass. Kevin is survived by 

his wife of 34 years, Kathleen M. (Paxton) 

McMaster; two sons, Daniel K. Mc- 

Master of San Diego, Calif. and Craig C. 

McMaster and his fiancée Ashley of Wilbraham; 

four brothers, William McMaster 

of Albuquerque, N.M., Michael McMaster 

and of Williamsburg, Mass., Patrick 

McMaster of Southwick, and Thomas 

McMaster of Salado, Texas; a sister, Peggy 

Halstead of Summerville, S.C.; and a 

grandson. His funeral was held April 6 at 

Sampsons Chapel in the Acres followed 

by the Liturgy of the Word St. Patrick’s

Szmyt 79 of Wilbraham died Good Friday, 

April 6, 2012, in Baystate Medical 

Center. Born in Wilbraham Dec. 27, 1932, 

daughter of the late Stanley and Fanny 

(Kasa) Krzesik. Educated in local schools 

she was a graduate of Bay Path College. 

Loretta had worked as an executive secretary 

for Meyers Brothers, had worked for 

Ray-Joe Enterprises, and as a legal secretary 

for her daughter Pamela Szmyt. She 

was also the owner operator of Loretts 

Coiffeurs of Indian Orchard. She was also 

a member of the Junior League of Springfield, 

and the Massachusetts Dental Women’s 

Association. She was a Communicant 

of Christ the King Church. She was the 

widow of Dr. Joseph W. Szmyt who died 

March 16, 2008. She is survived by her 

loving children, sons Kenneth J. Szmyt of 

Indian Orchard, James J. Szmyt, and his 

wife Anne-Marie of Wilbraham, and her 

daughter Pamela “Pam” Szmyt-Hastings 

and her husband Scott of Ludlow. She 

leaves seven grandchildren. Sadly she was 

predeceased by her brother Stanley Krzesik. 

Funeral services celebrating her life 

were April 11 with family and friends 

gathering at the Kapinos-Mazur Funeral

a Liturgy of Christian Burial in Christ The

Charles O. Wills 

HOLYOKE - Charles O. Wills, 87, 

passed away peacefully in his sleep at the 

Holyoke Soldiers’ Home. Son of the late 

John and Esther (Hoover) Wills, Charles 

was born and raised in New Jersey where 

he spent most of his life with his beloved 

wife Catherine Wills, who predeceased 

him in 2001. Charles moved to Massachusetts 

in 2004 and resided at Keystone 

Woods for many years prior to moving 

to the Soldiers’ Home. A World War II 

Army Veteran, Charles was a lifetime 

member of the Federal Order of Eagles 

and the American Legion. He is survived 

by his loving daughter Sharon Tellier 

and her husband Keith of Wilbraham, 

his son James Wills of Vineland, N.J., a 

sister, Betty Smith of Millville, N.J. and 

brother-in-law and sister-in-law Donald 

and Esther Ridgway of South Hadley. 

Memorial Service IS Thursday April 12, 

at 2 p.m. at Wilbraham Funeral Home,

Trees Bring Hope volunteers present skit to Mile Tree School 

WILBRAHAM – The Wilbraham-based 

Trees Bring Hope project, led by Meri Blanchard, 

presented a skit to children at Mile Tree School 

last week based on the children’s book “Our 

Tree Named Steve” by Alan Zweibel. 

It is a story about a family and the beloved 

tree they named “Steve” that grew in their backyard 

for years, becoming the focal point of all 

their family celebrations; that is, until a storm 

took Steve down. As sad as it was, Dad built a 

tree house made from the wood that Steve provided, 

making for a very happy ending to the 

story. 

The skit was designed to inspire children to 

play a role in another happy ending — this time 

to Wilbraham’s story by taking part in a fundraiser 

designed to raise money to gift trees to 

14 families of Mile Tree School who suffered 

property damage due to the storms of June and 

July 2011. 

Green receptacles now reside in each classroom 

to collect donations for trees. The trees 

will be planted on the residents’ private properties 

by volunteers of Trees Bring Hope on Saturday, 

April 28. Blanchard informed the children 

that the trees they are gifting are the same 

age as they are now: 4 – 5 years old and stand 

over 10 feet tall: “Much taller than our Steve, 

Mr. Jacobson!” Blanchard asked them to think 

about how wonderful it will be to watch the trees 

grow and mature right along with them. “Yes, 

things look different now, but we can all play a 

part in helping Wilbraham be better,” Blanchard 

told the young students. 

A festival is being planned for Sunday, June 

3 from noon till 4 p.m. on the grounds of the 

Christ the King Lutheran Church, 758 Main 

Street to celebrate the new trees. The public is 

invited to attend. There will be fun, food, and 

games for “kids” of all ages will be featured, 

said Blanchard. “This will be yet another opportunity 

to purchase trees,” she said. More information
