Recreation Dept. to offer April golf lessons WILBRAHAM - The Wilbraham Recreation Department is partnering with Pete Chapman, PGA professional from the Country Club of Wilbraham to offer junior golf clinics over April vacation for ages 7-16 of varying skill levels. The clinics will be held at the Country Club of Wilbraham and limited to 10 participants. The one-hour clinics will be held April 17-20, with a cost of $60. After a semifinal and two finals appearances, the Falcons fell off a bit in 2011, making it as far as the quarterfinals. This year they hope to get back. They will do so with less experience than they have had in the pat. There are three seniors, two of which are returnees: Matthew Budrow and Cameron Hirose, both outside hitters. Their junior class is large, with eight players. Returning is libero, Joseph Beaupre and outside hitters, Brandon Gilmour, Zackery Poremba and Jackie Zheng. Also returning is sophomore setter Jack DeVine. The newcomers are juniors Mitchell Keegan, a setter, Christopher Diaz and Christopher Steil, both middle hitters, Kyle Page, an outside hitter, along with sophomore Christopher Spock, also an outside hitter. Falcons look for another strong season By Nate Rosenthal Turley Publications Sports Correspondent WILBRAHAM - The Minnechaug boys’ lacrosse team had been one of the best in Western Mass for some time. They have consistently been a force in the regular season as well as in the tournament. But it has been five years since their last finals appearance in 2007. This year they are aiming to get back. In 2011, they were 12-6 and garnered the fourth seed. The Falcons will enter the 2012 season with a largely veteran team, consisting of 13 seniors and six juniors. That is a lot of experience. The offense will be headed by attackers, seniors Jesse Vieira and Anthony Masi, along with juniors Joe Christman, Nick Borysyk and Frank Kochanowksi. Sophomore Nick Beauchamp may also see time in the attack role. There are senior midfielders, Conor Murphy, Samuel Spencer, Reed McLean, Chris Kwiatkowski and Nick Abbott as well as juniors Kevin Collins, Nick Dailey, Ty Trebbe and on occasion Borysyk. Beauchamp is also pegged to play some midfield, as is freshman Josh Henry. The seniors on defense are Thomas Charette, Drew Trebbe and Tony Barrett along with sophomore, Sam Bianco. Another sophomore for added depth is Ryan Mack. The back end will also be secured with senior Josh Dusel and Sam Wheaton, a junior. Russell Mooney returns as the coach. LACROSSE The boys team began the season with three wins in three tries. They topped Agawam 16-0 in their opener. They jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the first quarter and never looked back. Conor Murphy, Frank Kochanowksi and Reed McLean had three goals apiece to led the way. John Dusel with eight saves and Sam Wheaton with 2 preserved the shutout. Four goals in the first and four in the second gave the Falcons an 8-1 halftime lead over Westfield on the way to an 11-5 win. McLean tallied four times, while Nicholas Beauchamp found the net for three goals. It was a bit closer in their 10-7 win over Conard. The Falcons led 4-1 after the first and maintained the three goal edge at the half at 6-3. Conard cut it to two at 6-4 after three, but the Falcons kept them at arms length the rest of the way. McLean had five of the Falcons’ goals, while Dusel stopped 17 shots. TRACK The boys beat Longmeadow 79-66 with Jack O’Keefe (100-meter dash), Andrew Ward (110-meter hurdles), Sam Fisher (1 mile), Jordan Leckey (2 mile), Peter Schultz (long jump) and Jacob Clements (high jump) each winning one event. The girls dropped their meet to East Longmeadow, 82-58. They did get a pair of first from Abigail Boyd in the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes. TENNIS The boys swept past their first two opponents Central and Cathedral with 5-0 victories. Over Central Patrick, O’Shea, Brian Gurski and Alex Smith each won in straight sets, while the doubles winners were Naveed Cheraghi/Tom Sullivan and Alex Reed/ Christopher Weyant, also in staright sets. With Cathedral, it was O’Shea, Gurski and a forfeit in the singles. Doubles winners were Tom Knight/ Smith and Rob Knight/Alex Manzi. No Falcon lost even a set. The girls split their two matches. They started the season losing 3-2 to Agawam. The wins came in the first and third singles from Eve Sullivan and Eve Falk. They rebounded nicely with a 4-1 win over Northampton. Sullivan had a pair of shutouts in the first singles, while Jaclyn Mercadante won the second singles. In the doubles it was Falk/Rosa Contrino and Kylie Eisenberg/Katherine Weyant. Chris Mensing to be honored April 25 WILBRAHAM – Patriots star Vince Wilfork will be guest speaker at the Awards Dinner for Chris Mensing of Wilbraham, president and CEO of AAA Pioneer Valley who has been named as the 2012 recipient of the Distinguished Citizen Award, sponsored by the Western Mass. With one out, Beaulieu doubled, she moved to third on a groundout and then came home when Lauren Chapin reached on a dropped third strike. Chapin moved to third on a Katie Patterson base hit and scored when the pitcher dropped a toss back from the catcher. A triple by Madison Babula plated Patterson. Paulina Modestow singled in Babula and then she went to second when Mariani reached on an error. A wild pitch moved both runners into scoring position where they scored when Dani Torchia reached on the fifth Northampton error of the inning. When the third out was finally made 10 batters had come to the plate and the score was 10-1. Minnechaug got single runs in the fourth and fifth, as Beaulieu tripled and scored on a wild pitch in the fourth, while Mariani who had singled came home on a another wild pitch. Meanwhile Gouin set down six of seven batters in those two innings. The Blue Devils finally put something together in the sixth as they loaded the bases with no outs. Gouin saw the lead off hitter reach on an error, but then she retired the next three to end the game. Gouin went the distance, allowing just six hits in the game. She struck out seven and walked two along the hit batsman. Beaulieu went three for three and scored three times, while Mariani was two for four, also scoring three runs. Gouin helped her cause with two hits and Modestow chipped in with a pair from the ninth spot. Krol had just one hit, but it was a big as it gave Minnechaug a lead they would not relinquish. The Falcons lost a game earlier in the week, 7-5 to Ludlow. They fell behind quickly as the Lions scored five times before Minnechaug even got up. The Falcons got one back in the bottom of the inning and by the fifth inning had closed to 5-4. A two run Ludlow seventh was met by one run for Minnechaug in their final at-bat. The Falcons had only four hits, two of which were by Beaulieu. Torchia had a home run in the game as well. The Falcons record is now 2-1.
