Mass Medical Society calls attention to concussions<br />

WALTHAM, Mass. – This month’s<br />

health tip from the Massachusetts Medical<br />

Society, the statewide association of<br />

physicians, covers concussions.<br />

A concussion is a traumatic bra<strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>jury caused by a blow to the head that<br />

jars the bra<strong>in</strong>’s soft tissue. The tissue<br />

then hits the hard skull, result<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the<br />

bra<strong>in</strong> malfunction<strong>in</strong>g. A concussion can<br />

WILBRAHAM - Marlene A. (Wilder)<br />

Boynton of <strong>Wilbraham</strong> passed away<br />

April 8, 2012. She was born <strong>in</strong> Brattleboro,<br />

Vt. on Sept. 16, 1936 to Elmer<br />

Wilder and Mildred (Neilson) Snow. She<br />

lived <strong>in</strong> the Bondsville section of Palmer<br />

for many years, until 1983 when she relocated<br />

to <strong>Wilbraham</strong>. Until her retirement<br />

<strong>in</strong> 1991, she operated her own clean<strong>in</strong>g<br />

service. Marlene enjoyed work<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> her<br />

garden and took great pride <strong>in</strong> her flower<br />

beds, which came up every year with great<br />

beauty. She loved cook<strong>in</strong>g and could be<br />

found more often than not, near her stove.<br />

She also enjoyed her occasional trips to<br />

Mohegan Sun. She was predeceased by<br />

her daughter, Brenda K<strong>in</strong>g, her brothers,<br />

Greg Wilder and Brian Wilder, her parents<br />

and her stepson Richard Boynton, II.<br />

Marlene will be immensely missed by her<br />

husband of 38 years, Richard Boynton I,<br />

her daughter Cheryl K<strong>in</strong>g, her son Larry<br />

K<strong>in</strong>g and her step-children; Daniel Boynton,<br />

Deanne Sidur and Natasha Bourdeau,<br />

and 10 grandchildren and a great-grandson.<br />

Memorial Service will be Friday,<br />

April 13 at 7 p.m. at <strong>Wilbraham</strong> Funeral<br />

Home, 2551 Boston Road, <strong>Wilbraham</strong>.<br />

Younger athletes, <strong>in</strong> fact, can be more<br />

susceptible to <strong>in</strong>jury and take longer to<br />

heal.<br />

Concussions aren’t just conf<strong>in</strong>ed to<br />

organized sports. The Centers for Disease<br />

Control lists the five lead<strong>in</strong>g causes<br />

of concussions as bicycl<strong>in</strong>g, football,<br />

basketball, playground activities, and<br />

was active <strong>in</strong> the Women’s Christian Fellowship.<br />

Eleanor enjoyed square danc<strong>in</strong>g<br />

and was an active member of the “Wheel<br />

C” club and also enjoyed bowl<strong>in</strong>g, travel<strong>in</strong>g<br />

and play<strong>in</strong>g cards. Eleanor will<br />

be deeply missed by her husband of 61<br />

years Thomas Gernux. She also leaves<br />

three sons; Richard and his wife Ela<strong>in</strong>e of<br />

<strong>Hampden</strong>, David and his wife Joanne of<br />

<strong>Hampden</strong> and Tom and his wife Carolyn<br />

of Enfield, Conn., and six grandchildren<br />

Eleanor was predeceased by her son John<br />

<strong>in</strong> 1974 and her brother George K<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong><br />

2009. Funeral Service was April 11 at<br />

Grace Union Church. A reception <strong>in</strong> Fellowship<br />

Hall was held follow<strong>in</strong>g the Service.<br />

Burial was at the convenience of the<br />

family. Eleanor’s family is grateful for the<br />

compassionate care she received from the<br />

staff at Palmer Healthcare Center. Memorial<br />

James McMaster<br />

SPRINGFIELD - James<br />

“Kev<strong>in</strong>” McMaster, 64 of<br />

Spr<strong>in</strong>gfield died April 1, 2012<br />

<strong>in</strong> Baystate Medical Center, Spr<strong>in</strong>gfield.<br />

Kev<strong>in</strong>, a son of the late James T. and<br />

Kather<strong>in</strong>e (Sheip) McMaster was born <strong>in</strong><br />

Spr<strong>in</strong>gfield on March 22, 1948. Raised<br />

<strong>in</strong> Spr<strong>in</strong>gfield he graduated from Spr<strong>in</strong>gfield<br />

Trade High School and was on the<br />

school’s swim team. In his youth, Kev<strong>in</strong><br />

was a member and enjoyed go<strong>in</strong>g to the<br />

Spr<strong>in</strong>gfield Boys Club. He was employed<br />

for the past six years as a customer service<br />

representative at Penske Truck Rental <strong>in</strong><br />

Chicopee. He previously worked as office<br />

supervisor for 25 years with Solar Truck<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

served as shop steward at AMI Truck<br />

Leas<strong>in</strong>g, and was a limous<strong>in</strong>e driver for<br />

the Limo Connection. Kev<strong>in</strong> served his<br />

country with the United States Army dur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

the Vietnam War. He was a member<br />

and Past Commander of American Legion<br />

Gunther-Rowley Post 293 of East<br />

Longmeadow. Kev<strong>in</strong> was a little league<br />

coach and also coached the Interstate 91<br />

Hockey league. He was a lifelong resident<br />

of Spr<strong>in</strong>gfield and a communicant of<br />

St. Patrick’s Church and was head usher<br />

at the 4 p.m. Mass. Kev<strong>in</strong> is survived by<br />

his wife of 34 years, Kathleen M. (Paxton)<br />

McMaster; two sons, Daniel K. Mc-<br />

Master of San Diego, Calif. and Craig C.<br />

McMaster and his fiancée Ashley of <strong>Wilbraham</strong>;<br />

four brothers, William McMaster<br />

of Albuquerque, N.M., Michael McMaster<br />

and of Williamsburg, Mass., Patrick<br />

McMaster of Southwick, and Thomas<br />

McMaster of Salado, Texas; a sister, Peggy<br />

Halstead of Summerville, S.C.; and a<br />

grandson. His funeral was held April 6 at<br />

Sampsons Chapel <strong>in</strong> the Acres followed<br />

by the Liturgy of the Word St. Patrick’s<br />

Church, Spr<strong>in</strong>gfield. Rites of Committal<br />

and Interment with Military Honors followed<br />

<strong>in</strong> the Chapel of the Massachusetts<br />

Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Agawam.<br />

Contributions <strong>in</strong> Kev<strong>in</strong>’s memory may<br />

be made to St. Patrick’ Church and or to<br />

soccer. Falls are a lead<strong>in</strong>g cause among<br />

Loretta Szmyt<br />

WILBRAHAM - Loretta (Krzesik)<br />

Szmyt 79 of <strong>Wilbraham</strong> died Good Friday,<br />

April 6, 2012, <strong>in</strong> Baystate Medical<br />

Center. Born <strong>in</strong> <strong>Wilbraham</strong> Dec. 27, 1932,<br />

daughter of the late Stanley and Fanny<br />

(Kasa) Krzesik. Educated <strong>in</strong> local schools<br />

she was a graduate of Bay Path College.<br />

Loretta had worked as an executive secretary<br />

for Meyers Brothers, had worked for<br />

Ray-Joe Enterprises, and as a legal secretary<br />

for her daughter Pamela Szmyt. She<br />

was also the owner operator of Loretts<br />

Coiffeurs of Indian Orchard. She was also<br />

a member of the Junior League of Spr<strong>in</strong>gfield,<br />

and the Massachusetts Dental Women’s<br />

Association. She was a Communicant<br />

of Christ the K<strong>in</strong>g Church. She was the<br />

widow of Dr. Joseph W. Szmyt who died<br />

March 16, 2008. She is survived by her<br />

lov<strong>in</strong>g children, sons Kenneth J. Szmyt of<br />

Indian Orchard, James J. Szmyt, and his<br />

wife Anne-Marie of <strong>Wilbraham</strong>, and her<br />

daughter Pamela “Pam” Szmyt-Hast<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

and her husband Scott of Ludlow. She<br />

leaves seven grandchildren. Sadly she was<br />

predeceased by her brother Stanley Krzesik.<br />

Funeral services celebrat<strong>in</strong>g her life<br />

were April 11 with family and friends<br />

gather<strong>in</strong>g at the Kap<strong>in</strong>os-Mazur Funeral<br />

Home 64 Sewall St. Ludlow followed by<br />

a Liturgy of Christian Burial <strong>in</strong> Christ The<br />

K<strong>in</strong>g Church, Ludlow. Rites of Committal<br />

followed <strong>in</strong> St. Aloysius Cemetery. For<br />

Charles O. Wills<br />

HOLYOKE - Charles O. Wills, 87,<br />

passed away peacefully <strong>in</strong> his sleep at the<br />

Holyoke Soldiers’ Home. Son of the late<br />

John and Esther (Hoover) Wills, Charles<br />

was born and raised <strong>in</strong> New Jersey where<br />

he spent most of his life with his beloved<br />

wife Cather<strong>in</strong>e Wills, who predeceased<br />

him <strong>in</strong> 2001. Charles moved to Massachusetts<br />

<strong>in</strong> 2004 and resided at Keystone<br />

Woods for many years prior to mov<strong>in</strong>g<br />

to the Soldiers’ Home. A World War II<br />

Army Veteran, Charles was a lifetime<br />

member of the Federal Order of Eagles<br />

and the American Legion. He is survived<br />

by his lov<strong>in</strong>g daughter Sharon Tellier<br />

and her husband Keith of <strong>Wilbraham</strong>,<br />

his son James Wills of V<strong>in</strong>eland, N.J., a<br />

sister, Betty Smith of Millville, N.J. and<br />

brother-<strong>in</strong>-law and sister-<strong>in</strong>-law Donald<br />

and Esther Ridgway of South Hadley.<br />

Memorial Service IS Thursday April 12,<br />

at 2 p.m. at <strong>Wilbraham</strong> Funeral Home,<br />

2551 Boston Road. Visitation will be<br />

held one hour prior to the Service, from 1<br />

-2 p.m. Burial will be at the convenience<br />
