AT THE annual
Bouchie Lake Recreation
Commission's Dinner for
Seniors, there were 300 in
attendance.^ This was.
much different than the
one the first BLRC had in
1953, with only 15
present.
At that time we used
the small hall (of the old
small and big hall
complex which later
burned down).
After the dinner, Sue
Ward Speare led us in a
sing-song and some table
games.
The big hall held
many memories, too. The
Christmas concerts, with
Santa's visit and the
spring shows put on by
the Bouchie Lake
Sue's direction, with Bill
as Master of Ceremonies.
We had skits and
songs in all the oldfashioned
costumes made
by the W.L We even got
the men involved. They
were the miners in the
Barkerville concert. Joe
Bouchie was on stage
beside the painting Bill
had done of him. What
fun we had!
Now those of us who
were movers and shakers
with the Fraser Village
Home Society, Dunrovin
and so on are getting old
and all these places are
full. Who is going to build
a place for us.'
THE ARTS
BC needs
to develop
cultural
tourism
DO TOURISTS buy
art? This was one of
many questions Steven
Thorne addressed in
Barkerville at the recent
Annual General Meeting
of the Cariboo Chilcotin
Coast Tourism
Association.
His keynote speech
on "cultural tourism
traced how he developed
an arts infrastructure
in Kelowna as the
city's Arts Development
Officer. By making personal
contacts and sharing
information, he was
able to win business allies
for arts policies that
have put Kelowna at the
forefront of this tourism
sector.
Steven can grab
anyone's attention when
he talks about how
much money cultural
tourism generates. Most
already know that Europe
is the world's largest
tourism destination
largely due to its rich
cultural heritage and diversity.
New York City's
museums and galleries
draw more visitors than
all sports events combined,
and in Toronto,
the Barnes exhibit at the
Ontario Art Gallery
jrought $38 million
into the local economy.
BC has been slow to
develop its cultural
tourism potential, in
3art because we are
jlessed with an environment
that draws visitors
rom all over the world.
But this is changing.
Demographic shifts
are now leading people
towards "enrichment"
and away from
escapism."
When the Baby
Joom generation
reaches retirement age,
there wilLJ)e 75 million
jeople iri^he US alone
who will be more interested
in this kind of vacation
than outdoor recreation.
This is a huge
new market that we
can't ignore.
Our current government
never understood
this; would a Liberal
government invest ih
cultujral tourism?
By ANNIE GALUINT
Observer Reporter
A SMALL, but
appreciative crowd
gathered in the QSS
gymnasium for the grade
12 production Happily
Ever Once Upon.
Directed by grade 12
student, Ian Hart, this
play took the Cinderella
story 20 years past the
glass slipper incident.
Still very important to
her life, Cinderella played
by Lauren Allen, was
constantly visited by her
fairy godmother (played
by Nicole Moorhead)
who had changed careers.
She was staging one
western movie failure
after another and
dependent on Cinderella
to provide the financialbacking.
This was bankrupting
the magic kingdom and
Prince Charming (Sid
Leblanc) was at his wits
end trying to refill the
castle's coffers.
A steady stream of
family fairy tale
characters made up the
cast, bringing strange
variations to the
commonly told tales.
Under the guidance of
drama -teacher, Earl
Tourangeau, two casts
performed on June 7th
and 8th.
A vivid pageantry of
costumes and dialogue
paraded across the stage
in the enchanting hour
and a half production.
The audience was
entertained by the
author's concept of how
fairy tales were written.
The actors brought to life
such characters as Little
Red Riding Hood (Maria
Geiger), A.E.
Rumplestilskin (Bob
Wurm) and Rapunzel
played by Crystal
Madland.
Gavin Lalte Forestiy Camp has been a favourite yearend field trip for the grade 4/5 French emersion class led by their teacher Selena Melk During one
of the many planned activities Janet MacDonald (left) and Samantha Comeau (right) competed for the biggest bubble. Annie Gallant photos
Proud pf their tidy turtle award from top left are Jonathan
Sirnpson, Sean Duggan, George Coleman, Tommy Gallant,
Tyler Kelly and Cody Maurice.
Laura Coleman found dinner a little difficult when she pulled a whip from the bag and
realized she would eating with it. But she managed as did the other campers duringr their
bowUe dinnier at Gavin Lake Grade 4/5 class camp.
Annie tiallant
IT'S MY DIME
To camp or
not to camp
MAYBE IT'S a BC
tradition or possibly a
trend begun after I left
elementary school, but
classroom field trips
loom large in today's
schools.
There seems to bq,
from my vantage point,
two types of field trip
parents.
There are parents
who endure camp food
(sometimes they even
have to prepare it),
comfort homesick
children, teach nature
crafts, suffer millions of
bug bites and in the
worst possible scenerio,
ride a school bus for
untold, gruelling hours,
sometimes days.
Now the other type,
I've noticed, take a
totally different tack.
They have trusted their
offspring to school staff
all year long and gladly
wave goodbye to the bus
from the comfort of the
school yard.
They have packed
their child's bags for
every possible
eventuality. They have
assured their child they
will be there instantly
should anything happen,
but nothing, short of
that, could lure them to
a camp full of kids.
I straddled the fence
on this whole issue by
taking my own vehicle
and staying overnight on
the last full day oi my
son's camp.
Now, having chosen
to only be there one
night, I did, in faa, miss
being there when he
stabbed himself in the
arm with his knife. But I
was front and centre
when he fell victim to a
blinding headache. I
en)oyed our bow tie
dinner and watching
skits by the campfire.
I think I chose
wisely.
