Letters and Opinions A “sign” of the times Ever heard the phrase, “The sign says it all?” Well, this one says it all, and I’d like to add more. We as Americans will be faced with an important decision on November 6th, one that may have ramifications felt for years to come. We will elect to change the way the direction our country’s going or, God forbid, we will continue to have four more years of the current system. Is this what our founding fathers envisioned over two centuries ago? Our country was based on “In God We Trust”, and now ‘that has changed’. Look what’s happening! No prayers in schools or football games, speeches, or town hall meetings, etc. etc. Wake up people! There’s no room for complacency. It’s happening every day! On another note, this country was based on Capitalism and free enterprise. This country was founded and grew with people of all nationalities, with all races and creeds. That’s what made this country great as it is. And now it’s crumbling before our very eyes. Big and small businesses employ many people, and they pay taxes. You can’t discourage, you have to encourage. I don’t mean to be impolite with this next statement but how many poor people employ 5000 people? NONE! Everyone makes their own destiny, either you take a chance and make it, or you choose not to and work for someone else. Remember John F. Kennedy’s words, “Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country.” When did our country’s citizens become dependant and expect our government to support them? Whatever happened to working for what you have instead of expecting to get what you want? When you go to the polls on November 6th, remember, it’s not about party affiliation, but about 4 more years of the current administration. We cannot be complacent any longer. This Judicial elections important: Don’t let someone else speak for you on Election Day Elections have consequences, for better or for worse. And while most voters are focusing on the Presidential election this November, there is another political battle brewing that has the potential to dramatically impact the state of Louisiana’s legal climate. With Louisiana Supreme Court Justice Kitty Kimball retiring at the end of the year, the balance of our state’s highest court is in jeopardy. Several Appellate Court Judges around the state are also up for election or reelection, so there’s a lot at stake. Government handouts hurt everyone! I’m all for helping people who need help, but not helping people who can help themselves but refuse to do so. My father, who was a bricklayer, thought me how to work and I will always be grateful for that. I believe in teaching a person how to fish instead of feeding him fish forever. The Bible says in (#2 Thessalonians 3:10), “If a man will not work he shall not eat.” The late Nikita Khrushchev, first secretary of the Russian Communist Party, once said that communism will take over without firing a shot. And it will happen in this country if people don’t or refuse to wake up. Our country’s national debt has grown significantly in recent years due to rising annual deficits which means our government spends more money than it takes in. Our deficit now stands at over $16 trillion. Four more years of this current administration will bankrupt this country. When will our so-called “leaders” in Washington realize that they work for us, “we the people”? It seems our country is now being run as a dictatorship instead of a democracy. Why should our congressmen have separate retirement systems and health care systems? They should be made to use the same systems we, their constituents, have to use. If we have to worry because our Social Security retirement system is going broke, they should, too. May God Bless our veterans. If this administration repeals the Second Amendment, the right to bear arms, it will only be the criminals who’ll have guns, not law-abiding citizens who have the right to protect themselves and their families. Election day is November 6th and Veterans Day is power that is largely unchallenged. They make critical decisions that affect our economy, our health care and our environment. They also have the ability to provide justice for those who have been wronged, and they are responsible for protecting our courts from lawsuit abuse. That’s why it is imperative that voters get to know all the candidates before they head to the polls on November 6th. Numerous national studies have shown most judicial races tend to be “low-information elections” that don’t draw a lot of attention from voters. We need to reverse that trend. The impact of judges can be felt on our lives everyday. Take, for example, the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling earlier this year that upheld the constitutionality of President Barrack Obama’s controversial healthcare plan, best known as Obamacare. Or the case they’ll be taking up soon to determine the legality of same-sex marriages. Their decisions impact everything we do, so don’t take your vote for granted. See Opinion 5-A November 11th. Do the veterans a favor and go to the polls and vote to uphold the freedoms and rights they so valiantly fought to protect. Some may call me a fanatic, but I call myself a concerned tax-paying citizen, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who fear that the freedoms we enjoy today won’t be around tomorrow for my grandchildren. This is not about Democrats or Republicans, it’s about Socialism and Ideaology that goes along with it … or Free Enterprise, freedom of choice, freedom of speech, our Second Amendment Right to Bear Arms, capitalism – all which this country was founded, in and on the Constitution. Please, I encourage you to vote and help change the way things are going in this country and do research on the candidates’ background. I think that people in this country are tired of the lies, cover-ups and deception. Whatever is in darkness will come to light.
