FUNNY
BUSINESS
Paul Rudd got his start as a Hollywood heartthrob,
but after leading roles in comedies like The 40 Year
Old Virgin and Dinner for Schmucks, he’s proven he’s
more than a pretty face. BY ROD O’CONNOR
PAUL RUDD IS LAUGHING. And not just because he
can't decide whether he’d cast Fabio or Heidi
Montag in a real-life version of Dinner for Schmucks
(he ends up deciding it's too mean to choose).
He’s also laughing because he fi nds it endlessly
amusing that he’s become a bona fi de comedy star.
Between playing the straight man for the likes of
Steve Carell and cashing checks from some of the
biggest comedies in Hollywood, he fi nds himself
laughing a lot these days. So do audiences, which
helped Schmucks gross $24 million in its opening
weekend. The whole thing just cracks him up.

When Paul Rudd burst onto
the Hollywood scene as a doodle in
Alicia Silverstone’s notebook in 1995’s
Clueless, his career trajectory seemed
pretty obvious: He would play the cute,
harmless guy in a string of broad romcoms
(The Object of My Aff ection, Overnight
Delivery), then move into a major
romantic role as Lisa Kudrow’s sweetas-pie
boyfriend on the smash TV show
Friends. At the time, it was just the kind
of thing that male actors with shaggy
hair and lovable personalities did, and
he did it well. But somewhere along
the way, Rudd took a clever detour,
morphing into one of Hollywood’s
reliable funnymen and helping to
launch the comedy subgenre of the
moment: the “bromance.”
Rudd’s fi rst comic movie role was in
the 2001 summer camp send-up Wet Hot
American Summer, but it was 2004’s Will
Ferrell vehicle, Anchorman: The Legend of
Ron Burgundy, that really put him on the
comedy map. Next, supporting parts in
Judd Apatow-directed hits The 40 Year
Old Virgin and Knocked Up showcased his
sardonic wit and average, middle-class
charm, paving the way for comedic
turns as a buttoned-up Everyman.
Since 2008, Rudd has played the
comic straight man opposite Seann
William Scott in Role Models, Jason Segel
in I Love You, Man, and in this month’s
new release, opposite Steve Carell for
the third time, in Dinner for Schmucks.
But the bromance comes with a twist
this time: Rudd plays Tim, a fi nancial
analyst clawing for a promotion to
impress his girlfriend. But before he
can earn the new job, his boss asks him
to participate in a top-secret corporate
dinner where each executive brings
a “schmuck,” or idiot, as a guest. The
event is staged to impress an important
client, and the schmuckiest dinner
guest is crowned the evening’s winner.
Loosely based on the 1997 French
fi lm, Le Diner de Cons, Dinner for Schmucks
(which also stars Galifi anakis and
Jemaine Clement from HBO’s Flight of
FRIENDS IN NEED Rudd and Jason Segel get chummy in I Love You, Man.
DUMB LUCK Paul Rudd happens upon the perfect guest in Dinner for Schmucks.
the Conchords) isn’t quite as edgy as the
somewhat sadistic original—Tim and
his chosen schmuck, roadkill mouse
taxidermist Barry (Carell) become
fast friends—but Tim is still probably
the least likable character Rudd has
ever played. He is, at times, dishonest,
manipulative and overly ambitious. It
doesn’t seem to make audiences dislike
Rudd though—as Schmucks director Jay
Roach has said, “Paul is a guy you never
lose sympathy for. He has the ability
to keep audiences rooting for him, no
matter how big of a jerk he plays.”
And he does play jerks. One thing
that connects Rudd’s comedy roles is
the tension between his character’s
romantic relationships and his
“bromantic” relationships. Simply
put, he gets along better with his guy
friends than his girlfriends. Pete, his
character in Knocked Up, fi nds himself
having to sneak away from a controlling
wife to attend a fantasy baseball draft,
and Peter, whom Rudd plays in I Love
You, Man, retreats to his new friend’s
man cave to jam out to Rush songs.
He's a guy trying and failing at both
friendships and relationships—a
problem he once told ABC News
made the new genre of the bromance
relatable. “I think most of these
comedies could be dramas,” Rudd has
said. “As a kid I know that [my parents
met] most of their friends because my

WAX OFF The 40 Year Old Virgin’s Steve Carell learns that beauty is pain.
mom made friends with them and my
Dad went along. I know a lot of dads
who do that. I think it just starts to
happen with guys.”
In real-life, Rudd has far less
trouble striking a balance between
male bonding and time with his wife.
He and Julie Yaeger, whom he married
in 2003 and had a son with, get along
about as well as a couple can. But he
still sees the value in male bonding
sessions. “My social circle has gotten
the pedigree of Steve Carell, an alum
of The Daily Show and Chicago’s famed
Second City comedy theater. Yet he has
consistently shown the improvisational
chops to go line-for-line with all of
the above. This year, GQ magazine put
Rudd (along with Tracy Morgan and
Zach Galifi anakis) on the cover of its
comedy issue, and the actor recently
wrote and executive produced the
original comedy series Party Down—
about a group Hollywood hopefuls
“Guys understand guys. We do not
understand women too well.”
smaller since I got married,” he admits.
“Now I have one night a week where I
play cards and I really treasure it. We
are not like cavemen. We talk about
all sorts of things. But there is that
male kind of dynamic that is specifi c
and necessary. You just need to hang...
there is no pressure there,” he says,
perhaps explaining the popularity of
so many of his movies that explore male
friendships. “Guys can understand
guys. We do not understand women
too well.”
Rudd does understand comedy. He
might not share the same training as
younger, Apatow-groomed stars like
Seth Rogan and Jason Segel; or have
who are stuck serving industry bigwigs
for a catering company—for the cable
network Starz.
The Starz series strikes awfully close
to Rudd’s actual career. Like many
actors, before he made it onscreen, he
held his share of undistinguished jobs,
working at a Bennigan’s, and DJing
birthdays and bar mitzvahs on the
side. A lot of actors like to forget that
they were ever little people—hardly
mentioning the dishes they washed
or pizzas they delivered, let alone
producing a show about them, but
Rudd doesn’t mind being the butt of a
few jokes. It’s all part of an easygoing
personality that makes him a natural fi t
| UNITED.COM
07
for both romances and comedy.
Much of his humor, he says, can
be traced to his upbringing. Born in
Passaic, New Jersey to two English
parents, Rudd moved a lot, making it
hard for him to keep a close circle of
friends. Instead, he spent a lot of time
studying his father, an airline salesman
and a natural comedian. He watched
Monty Python and George Carlin specials
for hours and wore down the grooves
of his Steve Martin and Mel Brooks
records in his room.
When Rudd was 10, his family
settled in Lenexa, Kansas. He and his
nonreligious parents were suddenly
surrounded by predominantly
Christian, Midwestern families, but
Rudd says he had little trouble making
friends. He found common ground
through humor. “I was probably trying
to fi t in with diff erent new groups of
kids,” he says. “I was pretty extroverted
and I think it gave the appearance
of some kind of confi dence. False
confi dence. But around my senior year
in high school I started feeling a little
more comfortable. Puberty just hit me
like a brick wall—my hair overnight
turned into… I had coily, curly hair—it
wasn’t a good look.”
Maybe that awkwardness was how
the actor related to his character’s
eventual appreciation of Barry in Dinner
for Schmucks, someone whom others
might mock. “I’ve always taken to
eccentricity,” he says. “I’m really drawn
to people who are uniquely themselves
and [who] go through life unaff ected by
trends. I’ve also really liked people who,
you just know the road will be a little
tougher for them. I think they’re the
most interesting people.”
Is Rudd eccentric enough to get an
invite to a dinner like the one in Dinner
for Schmucks? “Yes,” he says. “I love
Legos and I still play with them too
much. I think I love it more than [my
son]. Honestly, I look at some of the
stuff they build at Lego Land, or even
Toys R Us in New York City, where they
have a giant Lego Chrysler Building,
and I’m more amazed by the stuff
people build out of Legos than I am by
the actual Chrysler Building. It’s like,
‘Ok, we get it, that’s amazing, beautiful
architecture, but look at this! This is a
dinosaur made out of Legos! ’”

As acerbic doctor Gregory House, actor Hugh
Laurie gets to show off many of his copious
talents, not least of which is a near perfect
American accent. But in a new project, the
British actor will be taking on a greater symbol
of America: the blues. The self-taught musician
often plays both guitar and piano on the show,
but many fans of House are still surprised
to learn that TV’s most sarcastic medicine
man has a soulful side. Whether the album
is Grammy-worthy is yet to be seen, but as
Laurie said recently, ““I promise no one will
get hurt.” Catch Laurie playing House in this
month’s “Guardian Angels.”
