GUITAR
HEROES
THE 25-YEAR-OLD sparkle-bedecked
blonde onstage in Michael Jackson’s This
Is It isn’t there to sing or dance. She’s
there to wail on an equally sparkly
guitar. And the King of Pop is taking
notice. Watching the fi lm, you will too.
The one-named Orianthi, featured
prominently in the documentary, isn’t
the only guitarist to have recently lit
up the big screen. In It Might Get Loud,
legends Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin,
The Edge of U2 and Jack White of the
White Stripes meet up to discuss their
six-stringed muse.
The electric guitar is defi nitely
enjoying a moment—screeching riff s
can be heard in singles by artists
ranging from Jay-Z and Rihanna to
Carrie Underwood; a new Broadway
Hollywood’s got an axe to grind: Two new documentaries,
It Might Get Loud and Michael Jackson’s This Is It give
the electric guitar its due // BY PATRICK HUGUENIN
musical has the axe cast as leading lady;
and videogames Guitar Hero and Rock
Band have earned billions.
It’s been a long, strange trip for the
instrument that gave birth to rock ‘n’
roll. It fi rst appeared more than 75 years
ago to help guitars in swing bands be
heard. In the 1940s, Les Paul came out
with a solid-bodied model, and Leo
Fender’s Fender Telecaster made it
aff ordable. In the mid-’50s, the
slightly more tricked out Fender
Stratocaster captured the hearts of
musicians—many of whom played
around with the mechanics to get
sounds unlike anything ever heard.
At the time, the electric guitar was an
instrument of rebellion. Now Hannah
Montana plays one.
OPPOSITE PAGE, FROM LEFT, JACK WHITE, THE EDGE, JIMMY PAGE AND ORIANTHI
05
The guitar’s heyday was arguably
in the ’80s, when hair bands with
serious solos burnt up the charts.
“Van Halen was on top of the heap,”
says Jennifer Batten, who toured with
Michael Jackson in the ’80s and ’90s.
“And it seemed like everybody and their
brother was really into guitar.”
Then, as is wont to happen, pop
culture took a turn. The emergence of
synthesizers and hip-hop made electric
guitars less relevant. Even when they
could be heard, notes Batten, such as in
the music of Nirvana, the emphasis was
on vocals and the songs themselves, not
ornate, fi nger-tapping solos.
Joel Hoekstra, the lead guitarist in
the Broadway musical Rock of Ages, says
he had mixed emotions about the shift.

A member of the band Night Ranger,
Hoekstra has toured with Styx and
REO Speedwagon, and he now plays
hits by Poison, Journey and Bon Jovi
during his eight shows a week in the
Great White Way’s latest jukebox hit.
His career has been based on a guitar
sound that made hair stand on end, but
he understands why it temporarily fell
out of favor.
“There needed to be a scene that
rebelled against the eighties because
it was so intense at the time,” he says.
“The hair was big. The pants were tight.
The guitars kept getting faster.”
Although electric guitars receded
from the spotlight, they never
disappeared. They have an enduring
quality. “If someone can hit a note like
B.B. King hit it thirty years ago, people
still feel it the same way today,” says
Jude Gold, the director of the Guitar
Institute of Technology at Musicians
Institute in Hollywood, where
enrollment is at an all-time high.
Guitar Hero and Rock Band deserve
some of the credit for that. The games’
popularity introduced a new generation
to the screeching sounds of classic
rock. When the Aerosmith edition of
Guitar Hero debuted in June 2008, the
band’s catalog sales increased by more
than 40 percent.
THE ELECTRIC THEATER
The four greatest fi ctional rock bands were almost
as important as their real-life counterparts in
establishing the guitar’s pop culture dominance.
STEEL DRAGON
The band in Rock Star
(2001), led by Chris Cole
(Mark Wahlberg), takes us
back to the wild rise—and
the less glamorous fall—
of the hair band.
Gold calls Guitar Hero a “gateway
toy” that perks curiosity, leading
the most interested players to go out
and buy the real instrument. Almost
every player traces his or her interest
to an urge to recreate beloved songs.
When budding musicians fi rst hear
that inspirational riff , it can seem
superhuman. Hoekstra laughingly
remembers the fi rst time he saw a nonrock
star—his sister’s boyfriend—play
the Van Halen solo “Eruption.” “It
literally could not have been more
impressive if the clouds had parted
and God came into my room,” he says.
CRUCIAL TAUNT
When Cassandra (Tia
Carrere) rocks out on bass
and vocals in Wayne’s
World (1992), she causes
a rift between friends and
inspires female rockers.
SPINAL TAP
The eponymous band
from This Is Spinal Tap
(1984) is among the most
famous heavy metal
groups ever—even though
it never really existed.
AEROSMITH, IN GUITAR HERO FORM
While imitation may be what draws
guitarists in, the ability to create new
sounds is what creates legends, such as
those depicted in It Might Get Loud. “You
have people who innovate—like Page,
the master of layers and open tuning
and big recorded sounds; the Edge, the
fi rst guy to really play digital delays and
other guitar eff ects in a musical way;
and Jack White, who brought the rawest
sound to a mainstream level,” Gold
says. “People appreciate the rawness of
the real thing.”
The fi lm gives a little insight into
what drew these innovators to their
STILLWATER
“I am a golden god,”
declares Russell Hammond
guitarist of the hair band in
instrument: White discusses his love of
diffi cult guitars—old ones, plastic ones,
bent ones —that challenge him to evolve
his voice. Page—against the backdrop
of old concert footage—gives a more
cryptic explanation for his passion.
“Every night that we went on the stage,”
he says, “it was living. Totally living.”
cast. Indeed, it’s hard to imagine
Jackson songs such as “Black and
White,” “Smooth Criminal” and “Beat
It” without their guitar solos, which
are some of the most memorable riff s
in pop history.
Jennifer Batten, who performed on
Jackson’s Bad, Dangerous and History
“Every night that we went on the
stage, it was living. Totally living,”
says Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin.
That the electric guitar means
diff erent things to diff erent people and
is both familiar and unpredictable
means, as of yet, there is no substitute.
And, according to the players, that’s
how it should be.
This Is It is fi rst and foremost a
posthumous tribute to Jackson. The
documentary consists of rehearsal
footage leading up to what would
have been his comeback. The concerts
never happened, but the fi lm has been
incredibly successful. Orianthi and her
guitar are part of a massive supporting
tours, as well as during his 1993 Super
Bowl half-time commercial, is glad to see
another edgy young woman, Orianthi,
bring new life to the songs in This Is It.
“It’s kind of like a sisterhood,” Batten
says. “As far as her presence on the
planet, all I can say is it’s about time.”
Indeed, women famous for playing
electric guitar have been few and
far between. But Orianthi has been
undeterred. She’s a prodigy, having
fi rst picked up guitar at age six to
strum along to the classics in her
father’s record collection: Elvis, Roy
JACK WHITE PLAYS AROUND TO CREATE NEW SOUNDS IN IT MIGHT GET LOUD.
Orbison, The Beatles. At 11, she saw
Carlos Santana, begged for an electric
guitar and wore out her VHS tape of
the guitarist’s “Sacred Fire” concert by
pausing it to learn the solos.
Her love of rock music made her
something of an outsider in the
synthetic pop world of the ’90s.
When Santana’s “Smooth,” with Rob
Thomas, became a massive hit in 1999,
she felt vindicated.
“Everyone in my class got to hear him
play,” she says. “I was like, ‘See, I was
telling you guys, he’s awesome.’”Her
skill and obsessive devotion got her
gigs opening for Steve Vai, playing
onstage at the Grammys with Carrie
Underwood and in a jam session with
Santana himself. Then came an invite
from Jackson. He had seen video of her
playing on YouTube and wanted her
to audition for the comeback concert
series he had planned for London’s O2
Arena. She had the gig after playing the
solo from “Beat It.” While the shows
never took place, Orianthi’s identity as
rocker babe had been forged.
As she makes her way, the rest of us
wait to hear what those six strings will
put forth next.
