TUNE UP Jeff Bridges as Bad Blake in Crazy Heart

LAWRENCE HO/LA TIMES/CONTOUR PHOTOS
WRONG
The common conception of a Hollywood hero is handsome,
strong and stoic. But many of the most beloved leading men
have been down-and-out, fragile and damaged. What is it
about these guys that audiences love so much? // BY PATRICK HUGUENIN
Jean Craddock: Where do all those
songs come from?
Bad Blake: Life, unfortunately.
—Crazy Heart
A GRIZZLED COUNTRY SINGER pulls into the
dusty parking lot of a bowling alley in
his battered 1978 Chevy Suburban. So
this is the gig he’s driven 350 miles for.
Such is the kind of unfortunate turn that
captivates us. Our hearts go out to Bad
Blake (played by Jeff Bridges) in Crazy
Heart, a guy at the tail end of a career
that’s gone to pieces. As with so many
big-screen love interests, Bad is a witch’s
brew of calamity: He’s an alcoholic. He’s
lovelorn. He’s broke. And somehow
he’s one of the most romantic fi gures in
recent cinema, because he inspires the
audience to actually care about him.
“If we didn’t care that he’s lived
through peaks and valleys, then we
| UNITED.COM
05
wouldn’t follow him through the story,”
said Crazy Heart writer and director
Scott Cooper. “Bad Blake is a national
treasure, a legendary musician who
is addicted to troubled women and
alcohol.” And so the audience gets
pulled in, following Bad to concerts
good and awful, through physical
illness, through terse skirmishes with
his manager.
And there’s a pay-off . Bad fi nds love

and is inspired to get his life together.
It starts as fl irtation when he fi nds a
sympathetic listener in Jean Craddock
(Maggie Gyllenhaal), a reporter sent
to interview him for a newspaper
article. Jean sees Bad plainly, sees his
drinking and the way his recklessness
can sabotage his career, but she decides
not to turn away. “I knew what the risks
were with you, and I took ’em,” she
tells him as their relationship deepens.
It’s a subtly moving statement of
unconditional love that’s enough to pull
anyone out of self-pity.
“Jean accepts a lot of these things
in Bad because she herself is kind of
drunk on love for him,” said Gyllenhaal.
“She’s a really emotional person,
and there are parts of Bad that are so
wonderful, the way he cares for her
son Buddy, which really moves her, the
way he’s so loving with her, even when
he’s drunk.”
It’s ironic that as the James Bonds
become even more relentlessly elegant,
and the G.I. Joes become brawnier
and more fearless, audiences can’t
get enough of the down-and-out Mr.
Wrong. He can pine for a second
chance, the right business deal or the
right girl, and we pull for him all the
way. While the latest Nicholas Sparks
hunk might look great surfi ng in the
sunset, a guy like Bad appeals to the
human impulse to rescue someone.
“That’s a characteristic of these movies,”
SWEET SCENES
Some of the most romantic moments
in fi lm have featured Mr. Wrong.
CASABLANCA
1942
Humphrey Bogart’s cynical
con-artist character kisses
Ingrid Bergman goodbye
before she gets on a plane.
CRAZY IN LOVE Bad Blake and Jean in Crazy Heart
about Mr. Wrong, says Chuck Walton,
editor of Fandango.com. “It’s the guy’s
last chance and he’s trying not to blow
it ... The strong female characters help
pull these underdogs out of the hole.”
It’s an old trope, the fl ipside of the
knight on the white horse saving the
princess. The long-suff ering woman
saves the deadbeat from himself,
in exchange for nothing but love.
“When I meet that hero with the dark
wounded soul, my initial reaction is not
sadistic delight in his pain,” says Beth
Cornelison, an author of Harlequin
LADY AND THE TRAMP
1955
Perhaps the defi nition of
Mr. Wrong, the streetwise
mutt shares a meatball with
the pedigreed Lady.
WEST SIDE STORY
1961
Tony, a member of the Jets,
prepares to leave gang life
behind for Maria in the
moments before his death.
Romantic Suspense novels. “But rather
a sympathetic ache, a burning desire to
help, to heal, and to ease his suff ering.”
Walton points to three distinct
types of Mr. Wrong. There’s the urban
persona: nebbishy, wise though clumsy,
honed to bumbling imperfection by
Woody Allen and, more recently, Hugh
Grant in Did You Hear About the Morgans?
or Robert Downey Jr. in Sherlock Holmes.
Then there’s the country incarnation:
the cowboy who drowns his sorrows
through drinking, such as Bad, or
engaging in criminal behavior, such
WHEN HARRY MET SALLY
1989
After years of on-again,
off-again romance, Billy
Crystal and Meg Ryan share
a binding New Year’s kiss.

Johnny Depp’s John Dillinger in Public
Enemies. Finally, there’s the Average Joe,
suburban iteration of Mr. Wrong. He’s
a schlubby, romantic funnyman. You
get the sense that his running jump at
love might permanently demolish his
spirit. He’s Zac Efron as a lovestruck
young actor in Me and Orson Welles, or
Alec Baldwin in It’s Complicated, whose
poor choices leave him longing for his
ex-wife, despite the consequences in
his carefully manufactured new life
with a younger wife. “All the characters
are extremely fl awed,” says Walton.
“They’re a lot easier to relate to than a
Brad Pitt. I think especially nowadays,
audiences would rather see somebody
more realistic than the superfi cial
Hollywood version of what’s beautiful.
They like a character they could run
into in real life.”
That’s the thing about the Mr.
Wrongs of the big screen: They tend
to be a little more nuanced than their
James Bond or G.I. Joe counterparts.
as philandering movie director Guido
Contini in Nine), or unexpected devotion
to the woman he loves (Bad in Crazy
“It’s the guy’s last chance,” says
Fandango.com editor Chuck Walton.
“He’s trying not to blow it.”
They have redeeming qualities that
draw their saviors-to-be in. It may be
humor (Baldwin in It’s Complicated),
outsize creativity (Daniel Day Lewis
TIES THAT BIND Alec Baldwin as Jake in It’s Complicated
Heart). Even in those situations when
the good is not enough to outweigh the
bad, and he drives the woman away,
it doesn’t mean Mr. Wrong has failed
| UNITED.COM
07
MOONLIGHT ROMANCE Meryl and Paul Morgan in Did You Hear About the Morgans?
completely. For Bad, falling in love
kick-starts a reevaluation of his life
and leads him to better himself. For
Efron as Richard Samuels, it helps
him come out of his shell and blossom
as an actor. For the widower played
by Colin Firth in A Single Man, it’s not
romantic love that saves him so much
as a profound friendship with Julianne
Moore’s character and the promise of a
student played by Nicholas Hoult. His
revelation is that there’s life after love.
“At the end, you get that eventual
rise out of the hole,” says Walton. “You
get that in Sideways, where Virginia
Madsen is going to be the catalyst to
push Paul Giamatti to a better station
in life.” Ultimately, for the audience,
part of the draw is to just to see the guy
try. With Crazy Heart and A Single Man,
he’s introduced when he’s crushed,
when he’s walking like a zombie, going
through the motions of his life. We wait
for him to grab hold of life again, no
matter how it’s going to make him feel.
When done right, that process is as
wrenching for the actor as it is for his
character and the audience. “Part of
me says ‘I don’t want to cry harder, or
laugh harder, or be more real than the
last one.’” Bridges said of playing Bad
Blake. “The other side of me says, ‘Yeah,
but that’s where the groove is. There’s
wonderful gold in them there hills.’
That’s where all the good stuff is.”
When Bad sobers up and performs
like he used to, it’s just what we’ve been
digging for.

Cops and robbers. This classic adventure is based on the real-life Hole-in-the-Wall Gang. The two title bandits, masterfully portrayed by Paul Newman
and Robert Redford, try to make the switch from robbing banks to robbing trains in Wyoming. When all does not go as planned, they decide to fl ee to
Bolivia via New York. Slapstick at times, the fi lm was cinematically advanced for its time and effectively launched Redford’s career—which is why he
named the famed fi lm festival after it.
Our best headphones. Since we introduced the world’s
first noise cancelling headphones over 20 years ago, we
have conducted continuous research to improve this technology.
Now, we have engineered significant advances
in noise reduction to make the QC ® 15 headphones our
quietest ever. Exclusive Bose technologies electronically
sense more of the sounds around you, reducing more
noise across a wider range of frequencies. And we didn’t
stop there. We developed a new ear cushion that further
reduces unwanted noise and helps create an extremely
comfortable fit. It works in harmony with the electronics
to deliver a better listening experience. Mark A. Kellner
