This is the most imortant and influential publication on molluscs by the zoologist and palaeontologist Cuvier. Cuvier was one of the first to describe in detail the soft parts and anatomy of molluscs and used this as a basis for the systematics of the group. This publication was originally published in a series of 23 separately paginated issues in the Annales du Museum de Histoire Naturelle, Paris. This is the second edition which appears to be scarcer than the first edition and has 5 more plates. Of the second edition there are two issues: one with 37 plates, and one with 3 extra plates and 14 extra pages of text. These are titled ''Coquilles très rare'' and are described in the Apendice. This expanded issue is offered here. Discussing the names given to shells by the English and Dutch d'Argenville writes: ''Mais en vérité après une recherche exacte, les noms Hollandois ne sont pas meilleurs que les nôtres: is ne sont fondés que sur le caprice & la Bisarrerie''.
