rivière et de terre. Ouvrage dans lequel on trouve une nouvelle méthode Latine et Françoise de les diviser: augmenté de la<br />

zoomorphose ou représentation des animaux à coquilles, avec leurs explications; xxii, 394, 84, cvii, [1] p., 28, 9, 3 pls,<br />

frontispiece, contemporary hcalf (extremeties and marbled paper covering somewhat worn). Old Ex libris on free end paper,<br />

another ex libris removed. A few pages with some faint foxing, but the great majority (and all the plates) clean.<br />

This is the second edition which appears to be scarcer than the first edition and has 5 more plates. Of the second edition<br />

there are two issues: one with 37 plates, and one with 3 extra plates and 14 extra pages of text. These are titled ''Coquilles très<br />

rare'' and are described in the Apendice. This expanded issue is offered here.<br />

Discussing the names given to shells by the English and Dutch d'Argenville writes: ''Mais en vérité après une recherche<br />

exacte, les noms Hollandois ne sont pas meilleurs que les nôtres: is ne sont fondés que sur le caprice & la Bisarrerie''.<br />
