Overfeed<strong>in</strong>g is as dangerous as<br />
deficient lubrication!<br />
Possibilities : reduced <strong>in</strong>tervals<br />
additional lubricat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>tervals<br />

Advantages: Deficient and overfeed<strong>in</strong>g lubrication can be avoided<br />
<strong>the</strong> correct lubricant is guaranteed<br />
contam<strong>in</strong>ation is nearly impossible<br />
lubrication <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> runn<strong>in</strong>g bear<strong>in</strong>g is possible<br />
lubrication <strong>in</strong>tervals are automatically secured<br />
reliable lubrication also at difficult accessible po<strong>in</strong>ts<br />

Bear<strong>in</strong>g Failure at Electric Motors – Ma<strong>in</strong> Reasons<br />
Lubrication / Relubrication<br />
wrong grease, deficient lubrication, overfeed<strong>in</strong>g lubrication<br />
Too high prim<strong>in</strong>g force caused by <strong>the</strong> belt<br />

Brac<strong>in</strong>g caused by <strong>the</strong> coupl<strong>in</strong>gs / cardan shaft<br />
additional dynamic forces, <strong>in</strong>creased loads<br />
Current transfer dur<strong>in</strong>g operation with FU<br />
Contam<strong>in</strong>ation<br />

3<br />
Bear<strong>in</strong>g is no longer regreasable ( 1+2 )<br />
Grease residues are sticked so much onto <strong>the</strong><br />
slideway that <strong>the</strong>y cannot be wiped away. ( 3 )<br />
Cause: Despite of correct lubricat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>tervals,<br />
it is not possible to re-lubricate <strong>the</strong> bear<strong>in</strong>gs<br />
with a sufficient quantity of fresh grease !<br />
Cause : wrong <strong>in</strong>itial greas<strong>in</strong>g !<br />

Bear<strong>in</strong>g Failure – Lubrication – Deficient lubrication (1)<br />
1 2<br />
3<br />
Cause: Exceed<strong>in</strong>g of service life, no relubrication.<br />
This bear<strong>in</strong>g showed deficient grease lubrication at<br />
first delivery (1). The extracted grease sample is<br />
dry, mixed with particles and has no lubricity (2).<br />
The raceways are partly polished and changed.<br />
On <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>ner r<strong>in</strong>g a typical spall<strong>in</strong>g is visible (3).<br />

3<br />
At delivery <strong>the</strong> bear<strong>in</strong>g kept brown grease<br />
residues <strong>in</strong>capable of lubricat<strong>in</strong>g (1).<br />
On <strong>the</strong> raceways (2) and <strong>the</strong> lateral bear<strong>in</strong>g<br />
surfaces (3) material spall<strong>in</strong>g was visible, which is<br />
typical for deficient lubrication.<br />
Cause: Grease contam<strong>in</strong>ation dur<strong>in</strong>g operation, no relubrication was effected<br />

Bear<strong>in</strong>g Failure – Lubrication – Overfeed<strong>in</strong>g lubrication<br />
1 2<br />
This motor showed grease <strong>in</strong> good quality <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g (1) <strong>the</strong> bear<strong>in</strong>g<br />
and <strong>the</strong> clearance around <strong>the</strong> bear<strong>in</strong>g were completely filled (2).<br />
The bear<strong>in</strong>g was overheated, <strong>the</strong> additional lubrication caused a fur<strong>the</strong>r<br />
temperature <strong>in</strong>crease (grease-worked friction).<br />
Cause: Overfeed<strong>in</strong>g lubrication with an automatical lubricator<br />

The damage of this deep groove ball bear<strong>in</strong>g is very advanced and is clearly<br />
visible. The outer r<strong>in</strong>g shows <strong>the</strong> typical groov<strong>in</strong>g and also <strong>the</strong> grey colour of <strong>the</strong><br />
raceway is visible. (1).<br />
All balls are equally grey discoloured (2).<br />
Reason: cont<strong>in</strong>ious, relative strong current flow<br />

Survey<br />
-Damages on roll<strong>in</strong>g bear<strong>in</strong>gs caused by current passage <strong>in</strong> electrical mach<strong>in</strong>es<br />
will play a larger role <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> future, when up-dated revolutionary controll<strong>in</strong>g<br />
devices will be used.<br />
-High frequency current passage reduces <strong>the</strong> grease life-time.<br />
-The <strong>in</strong>sulat<strong>in</strong>g measures decided by <strong>the</strong> manufacturer of electrical mach<strong>in</strong>es are<br />
successful.<br />
-A cont<strong>in</strong>ous relubrication of <strong>the</strong> bear<strong>in</strong>gs with grease is a successful measure to<br />
a pla<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>crease of <strong>the</strong> life time.<br />
-The usage of electrical conductive greases causes an advantageous reduction of<br />
<strong>the</strong> voltage potential between <strong>the</strong> bear<strong>in</strong>g r<strong>in</strong>gs.<br />
-By now <strong>the</strong>re are exist<strong>in</strong>g permanent lubrication devices on <strong>the</strong> market, which<br />
secure an extremely long runn<strong>in</strong>g-time with m<strong>in</strong>imum grease quantity.<br />
