The Caribbean cruise market is growing at a phenomenal rate. Those owners reacting fast enough will end up with a big slice of the cake. Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) did this. At the beginning of the nineties they or - dered two new vessels in France and one in Finland. The new ships provided the ideal conditions for providing more passenger capacity. NCL had already been working successfully with the Lloyd Werft, which had Longer, bigger, better: “Norwegian Wind”, “Norwegi and “Norwegian Majesty made its name with unconventional and success oriented conversions, and in particular with ship’s lengthenings. The yard promised NCL that within 60 days they would have each of their three ships back, to a new standard: Longer, bigger, better. The “Windward” marked the beginning. On 14 th January, 1998 she arrived in Bremerhaven and on 14 th March, 1998 she left the Longer, bigger, better. yard as the “Norwegian Wind” – lengthened by a complete midship section of 39.8 metres that provided additional accomodation for 500 passengers and 100 crew. Following on almost immediately was her sistership “Dreamward” which left the Lloyd Werft as the “Norwegian Dream” after 60 days and as good as a “new” ship. The third ship, the finnish built “Royal Majesty” was lengthened by 33.6 metres and re named “Norwegian Majesty”. All three ships were 1 2 an immediate hit and achieved market advantages for NCL while setting new standards in the competitive cruise market. The tasks of planning and completing the lengthenings were complicated and de - manding and attracted worldwide atten tion. To the exact millimetre the ships were cut down the middle, from the upper deck down the the bilge. Barges fore and aft and a specially designed float assured the stability of both sections when they were afloat, during which time the preconstructed mid ship section was floated into the drydock.

Within 60 days new interna - tional standards were created in the cabins, salons, restaurants and bars. This double success was made possible by the Lloyd Werft’s modern prefabrication methods and its solid experience with demanding ship conversions. 1 The “Norwegian Dream” (ex “Dreamward”) had to pass under this 40 metre bridge of the Kiel-canal.
