Lady Capulet: <strong>Juliet</strong>’s mother. She was married young<br />

at about <strong>Juliet</strong>’s age, <strong>and</strong> is eager to have <strong>Juliet</strong> make a<br />

good match with someone from a wealthy, noble family.<br />

Friar Lawrence: A monk who is a friend to both <strong>Romeo</strong><br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>Juliet</strong>, <strong>and</strong> secretly marries them with the hope that<br />

their union will bring peace between their families. He is<br />

also expert in the art of herbal medicine <strong>and</strong> potions.<br />

Prince: The Prince of Verona wants to establish peace<br />

in the city, <strong>and</strong> punishes those who break his law against<br />

fighting in the streets. He banishes <strong>Romeo</strong> for defending<br />

Mercutio, which leads to <strong>Romeo</strong>’s separation from <strong>Juliet</strong>.<br />

Tybalt: <strong>Juliet</strong>’s Capulet cousin, nephew of Lady Capulet.<br />

He defends the Capulets against any insult from the<br />

Montagues, imagined or real. He is hot-tempered <strong>and</strong><br />

quick to avenge the family honor.<br />
