Twenty six girls from 30 girl
guide companies last weekend
set up camp along-side the
Quesnel River.
Each of the 12-to-13-year-old
guides represented one company
from the Lions Area
encompassing North Vancouver
to Pemberton.
Their trip into the Cariboo
country had been planned for
more than half a year and it was
the girls themselves who did
most of the planning, said Fran
Ruegg, guider in charge.
"We had written to (local
guiders) around Christmas time
and through Mrs. Klassen and
Mrs. Brodie we chose to stay
here rather than any other
camp site," she said.
"When we started talking
about it we asked the girls
where they wanted to go and
they sort of planned three
different trips," said Mrs.
Ruegg.
Rather than going to Vancouver
Island or doing a
southern B.C. circle tour, the
girls decided to experience the
famous gold rush country.
BUDGET
"Basically speaking they
planned what we are going to
do and they also had a part in
the budget," said Mrs. Ruegg.
Each girl pays $100 for the 10
day journey.
They all decided what cost
should be considered, how
much time to spend at each of
the locations in their Guiding on
the Move project and what to
astarea
see during the week and a half.
When deciding which age
group to deal with this summer,
guiders in the Lions Area
(named after the Lions-the
name of a picturesque coastal
mountain) "thought these 12-to-
13-year-oIds need a lot of
attention," said Mrs. Ruegg.
"If we keep them past their
13th year we keep them in for
the Ranger program and we've
got them for the rest of their
lives."
The greatest drop-out rate is
in that age group, Mrs. Ruegg
said.
Apart from that, all older
girls often have provincial,
national and even international
meets they can attend, she
added.
After only four days on tour,
the 26 girl guides and their five
leaders already had two experiences
to test their ingenuity
and courage.
On their first night out in
Pemberton they had "thunder
and lightning that was just
unbelievable and the rain last
night (Sunday in Quesnel) was
a good test for them, whether
they go willy-nilly or whether
they could make themselves
comfortable," said Mrs. Ruegg.
Sunday's thunderstorm
meant the girls had to go to bed
without the usual girl guide
camp fire.
On Saturday, when Richbar
guide Debbie Klassen joined
the westcoast girls they did an
old-fashioned melodrama called
The Tomato Man
Whenever I met the Tomato Man,
I took to my heels and away I ran.
He used to stand at his cottage door
Oozing tomatoes from every pore.
I always felt that the back of his head
Was like a tomato-his cheeks were red,
And he smoked a pipe, when I stopped to talk,
That was rather like a tomato stalk.
Tomato Men are the same to-day;
You can always tell them a mile away:
They lean on the fence, they smoke a pipe
And are just a little bit over-ripe.
ENTERTAIN
"It's a time where they learn
to entertain themselves," said
Mrs, Ruegg.
"They discover that they
have their own resources without
having to rely on radio and
TV, " she said.
From their Quesnel Campsite,
the "Lion" group of girl
guides took the train to Prince
George.
Later this week they will
spend a few days at a guest
ranch in the 70 Mile area.
Except for their Barkerville
excursion the group is travelling
by train.
It has been an adventure for
the girls to travel by rail and
schedules had to be arranged
around times and places available
to rail servicing, said Mrs.
Ruegg.
Going by rail has been an
The second front pane
adventure in itself for most of
the girls.
On the other hand, having to
follow schedules and limiting
locations of travel to areas
serviced by rail, has helped the
girls in planning their trip well
in advance.
In order to qualify for the
coveted provincial commissioner's
challenge award, the
planning of their trip is just as
important as its execution.
"They either stay with the
plan or must have a good
reason to change it," said Mrs.
Ruegg.
• The challenge award has to
be an adventurous journey of
more than five days and it has
to be planned by the girls, she
explained.
Part of the award is a daily
log book.
Two scouts and leader
off to intl Jamboree
Two local scouts and their
leader are off to Scandinavia
to take part in the 14th World
Scout Jamboree July 29 to Aug.
7.
Brad Morrow, Rick Fuller
and troup scouter Martin
Reeve are scheduled to leave
Quesnel Saturday to join the
whole Canadian contingent for
three days of pre-Jamboree
conference in Copenhagen.
After a briefing on the
jamboree, the trio will tour the
capital of Denmark and visit
local attractions, including the
world-famous Tivoli Gardens
amusement park, Mr. Reeve
said.
From Denmark the Canadian
scouts will travel to Gothenburg
where during five days of
home hospitality they will be
offered an experience in the
Nordic way of living as they
stay in homes of Swedish scouts
just previous to going to camp.
Nordjamb '75 is being held
near Lillehammer, Norway,
about 120 miles'north of the
Norwegian capital of Oslo.
Hosted by Denmark, Finland,
Iceland, Norway and
Sweden, about 15,000 scouts
from over 90 countries are
expected to attend the giant
10-day camp.
One of the main objectives of
the jamboree is to decentralize
programs with activities circulated
in sub-camps.
HIGHLIGHT
Highlight of the jamboree is
to be 24- hour expeditions
through unknown territory.
International patrols of eight
boys each, led by experienced
native mountain hikers, will
spend the night in the open
without tent and with as little
equipment as possible.
Purpose of this hike is to
train scouts to explore unknown
ground and to develop
resourcefulness.
Nordjamb hikes are also
aimed at developing international
understanding and personal
friendships, organizers say.
After completion of the
camp, the two Quesnel boys
and their leader plan to go on a
post-jamboree bicycle tour
through parts of Denmark.
Then it's back to Canada.
The whole one-month trip
cost the boys $930 each plus
spending money, said Mr. and Rick had to earn them-
CAMP'S AIM
"The idea is to keep the
kids active all the time,"; said
Rev. Robert Delgatty, director
of the Pentecostal Cariboo
Camp.
For one week over 60 children
from 100 Mile House,
Williams Lake, Quesnel and
Hixon lived in the relatively
secluded Chubb Lake camp.
There were always enough
things to do, it seemed.
Treasure hunts, ball games,
races and-to cool off-lots of
swimming.
• One day, the children held a
kangaroo court.
One of the camp leaders, for
example, was charged with
murdering five mice.
The court came to an untimely
end when a bear unexpectedly
dropped into camp and a
mob of children chased the
animal.
Apart from all the outdoor
fun, a large portion of the
emphasis was placed on spiritual
activities.
Island Mountain Mines at Wells,
which operated profitably
for over 30 years.
Mosquito Creek Mine is a
lode gold mine property on
which the present company has
already driven a 500-foot deep
shaft, installed large hoisting
machinery, driven over 2,000
feet of drifts and cross-cuts, and
over 6,000 feet of diamond
drilling.
The Home Oil Company
participated in this early phase
of development, but did not
wish to_ continue, in part,
because of the unfavourable
political atmosphere of both
provincial and federal governments
regarding gold mine
taxation and imposed restrictions.
"We made a deal with Home
Oilahd bought out their entire
interest in the mine and now we
again have full control of the
mine" said Mr. Jukes.
"At no time had we thought
of abandoning the mine."
"We closed it after comple-.
tion of this first stage or phase
of the work, because of many
problems, including further financing,
meeting with Home Oil
and other interests, trying to
decide how to approach further
development.
"Now having full control of
the property, I fully intend to
reopen the mine early this fall.
"Just last Friday the paper
work was completed with
Home Oil Company.
"Also we've just received the '
completed reports of development
and located ore zones,
etc., from Mr. Marcel Guiguet
our former geologist and mine
manager, and until this week,
we could not plan further.
"It is the intention of our
company to develop Mosquito
Creek .Mine into a productive
QUESNEL CARIBOO OBSERVER WEDNESDAY, JULY 16, 1975-21
Debates over B.C.R. and hydro
considered session highlights
Debate over the financial
state of the B.C. Railway and
the increased borrowing power
for B.C. Hydro were what
Cariboo MLA Alex Fraser felt
to be the highlights of the
recently adjourned Spring session
of the provincial legislature.
The debate on B.C. Hydro
which increased its borrowing
power from $2 billion to $3
billion resulted in a close look
being taken at the future of
hydro in B.C.
"It is estimated the hydro
debt is going to hit $6 billion by
1982 and we had to start
looking at just what direction
B.C. Hydro was going to go
from here," said Mr. Fraser.
Of particular interest, he
said, was the debate on the
fiscal setup of the province,
especially that of the B.C.
Railway.
The bill introduced by the
government requested an increase
in the borrowing power
for B.C.R. from $440 million to
$650 million, but; debate didn't
start until the first week of
June because no operating
financial statement had been
submitted, he said.
A scandal arose over the $32
million 1974 operating deficit of
B.C.R., he added, and questions
were asked.on what is
going to be done to correct the
situation.
DIRTY
Asked about media comments
that the Spring session
was marked - by considerable
dirty politicking, Mr. Fraser
said, "I admit that the debates
on regional boards and municipal
councils look like ladies'aid
parties in comparison to the
legislature.
"The B.C. Legislature though
is renowned for its rough and
tumble atmosphere and is known
for its harsh debates," he
said.
The Spring session fell about
two weeks short of the 1974
session, which was a record
sitting time, he added.
The session began Feb. 18
and ended June 26.
"There were three weeks of
wasted debate caused by the
closure motion limiting debate
on the estimates to 135 hours,"
said the Socred MLA.
After three weeks of procedural
debate, "which got us
nowhere," they "finally gave
in," but the time had been lost,
he said.
Mr. Fraser said it was
"ridiculous" to limit budget
debate now, pointing out that
the$3.2 billion 1975 budget
represents a tripling of the
provincial budget in the last
three years.
This warranted at least a
doubling of the debating time
as there are more funds and
more public business involved.
Mr. Fraser said he doubted
there would be another attempt
to limit debate on the estimates.
He added he would like to see
the throne debate cut from two
weeks to three days and a
broad debate on the budget for
two weeks instead.
El When you complain about improper advertising,
we do something about it. Fast. For example:
From the files of the Advertising Standards Council
One day a consumer sent us a "Magic Mouse" toy. She complained that the ,
television advertising had exaggerated the quality and performance of the product.
And after examining the product and the advertising, we agreed.
This is the advertising rule that was broken:
"No advertisement shall be prepared, or be knowingly accepted, which
contains false, misleading, unwarranted or exaggerated claims - either directly
or by implication. Advertisers and' advertising agencies must be prepared to
substantiate their claims."
Here's what we did about it, immediately.
t First we phoned.the television station that had run the "Magic Mouse"
. commercial. They told us they had already cancelled the commercial because
of similar complaints. Since the advertiser (isU.S. company) did not reply to
our inquiry, we issued an 'urgent' bulletin requesting all stations to contact us
before accepting advertising from this company. The "Magic Mouse" is no
longer advertised.
Keep this complaint notice. If you see dishonest or unfair advertising, send it to us.
