First book with coloured plates of Indonesia. - Volume I gives an ample description
of the voyage to Indonesia, with detailed accounts on Africa. Volume II deals for a
great part with Batavia and surroundings, also Cheribon, Samarang, Djokjokarta,
Soerakarta and other places were visited and described. Among the fine coloured lithographed
plates are those representing Dipanagara and his followers. 'The author,
Jean Baptist van Doren, served in Indonesia in the Oost Indische Kavallerie between
1821 and 1839, and his knowledge of the country provided him with material for a
whole string of books which were published during the 1850s and 1860s' (Bastin-
Brommer p.142). - A fine copy.
