First book with coloured plates of Indonesia. - Volume I gives an ample description<br />

of the voyage to Indonesia, with detailed accounts on Africa. Volume II deals for a<br />

great part with Batavia and surroundings, also Cheribon, Samarang, Djokjokarta,<br />

Soerakarta and other places were visited and described. Among the fine coloured lithographed<br />

plates are those representing Dipanagara and his followers. 'The author,<br />

Jean Baptist van Doren, served in Indonesia in the Oost Indische Kavallerie between<br />

1821 and 1839, and his knowledge of the country provided him with material for a<br />

whole string of books which were published during the 1850s and 1860s' (Bastin-<br />

Brommer p.142). - A fine copy.<br />
