First edition. - The main body of the work is an account of Earl Macartney's Embassy<br />

to China (1792-95). The embassy created great interest and excitement in Britain,<br />

resulting in a number of different accounts being published, but despite collecting<br />

much information, permission to have a British minister resident in China was declined.<br />

Second edition, first printed at Rome in 1672. - 'Vincenzo Maria was a Carmelite<br />

missionary whose name was Antonio Murchio. He went to India as a missionary in<br />

1656. Amat di San Flippo regards his relation as perhaps the most important of the<br />

17th century Italian travellers' (Atabey p.689). He journeyed through Turkey,<br />

Lebanon, Syria, Persia before he finally arrived in India. He had a keen eye and has<br />

much of interest to record about manners, customs, costumes, natural history, etc. He<br />

returned to his homeland via Muscat which he describes over a chapter. 'The present<br />

account is much more detailed than the usual contemporary reports and thus of particular<br />

interest to the study of the history of coffee (Hünersdorff, Coffee, p 1045) .-<br />
