First Dutch edition. - 'The object of this voyage was to take reinforcements to<br />

Kamchatka, but exploration was also intended, and a number of scientists were on<br />

board, including the physicist H.F.E. Lenny and the physician and naturalist Johann F.<br />

Eschscholtz. The expedition sailed to Brazil, then went by way of Cape Horn to<br />

Chile, Tahiti, Pitcairn Island, Tonga, Navigator's Islans, Radack, and thence to<br />

Kamchatka. The voyage also visited California, with its new Russian settlement; the<br />

Marianas; and the Philippines. With the completion of Kotzebue's explorations, the<br />

main features of the northwest coastline of America were fairly well established. This<br />

work was originally published in Russian at St. Petersburg, 1828' (Hill 946). - Rare<br />

standing a French lady holding a bottle. 'Kunihisa (1852-91), ukiyo-e printmaker.<br />

Lived in Yokohama. Pupil and son-in-law of Kunisada; collaborated with him, doing<br />

the landscape background for his master's figures. An early member of the Yokohama<br />

school, specializing in landscape' (Roberts, A dictionary of Japanese artists, p.95). -<br />
