How to Choose the Right Carwash:
Not all carwashes are created equal, says Tehrani, President of Drive & Shine chain of locally
owned carwashes.
“Most carwashes are less than 80 feet long and have $100,000 worth of wash equipment. Our
carwashes are 200 feet long and include up to $1 million dollars in wash equipment alone,” he says.
“What that means for the customer is a non-compromising carwash that cleans every corner of the
vehicle to perfection and bone-dries the car.”
Smaller carwash tunnels rely on aggressive cloth material to create extra friction for cleaning, which
will leave small swirl-type scratches on the car’s painted surface.
“These washes also use strong acids as soap to compensate for lack of necessary wash equipment
needed to get the car washed safely,” Tehrani says. “These acids are so strong that they gradually
remove the clear coat off the paint, making your car dull forever.”
The acids also etch the windshield, decay rubber components of the vehicle and are dangerous to
breathe. Hydrofluoric acid (HF) is most commonly used in small carwash tunnels. The Material
Safety Data Sheet lists HF as poisonous and corrosive. The sad thing is that this acid makes its way
back to our natural resources.
Instead choose a carwash that has long tunnels with lots of equipment and that uses no cloth on any
of the rotational cleaning unit.
“At Drive & Shine, we use as much as four times the amount of carwash equipment compared to the
shorter carwash tunnels, making it unnecessary to rely on strong acids such as HF or aggressive
cloth to clean cars,” Tehrani says.
“We got into the carwash business because we love cars and we wanted a safe place to clean our
own cars,” he says. “To make the wash much safer, Drive & Shine uses a foam-like material instead
of cloth. It is so soft that it cannot ever scratch a car.”
Protect your vehicle by detailing the inside of your car at least once a year and waxing the
outside every three months. Wax acts as a barrier to the harsh elements your car comes in contact
with.
