ANNUAL REPORT 1 JULY 2010 – 30 JUNE 2011
John Wilkinson
During the past month, annual general meetings were held at all Trans-50 centres.
The annual reports and the audited financial statements of each centre and Trans-50 are
available at your reception.
Herewith a brief summary:
The slowdown in the economy had an effect on the residents and their children. The
finances of Trans-50 were well controlled and expenses were monitored.
At the Head Office, Faan Schoeman’s sudden death was like a bolt out of the blue. He was
an accountant who knew only two colours, namely black and white. Grey did not exist. We
salute an honourable man.
Care, Ethics and Lifestyle:
All the necessary checks and balances are in place to ensure that the residents receive
quality care. The care audits done at the centres enabled the staff to identify gaps in the service
delivery. The final results were very good.
A big thank you is extended to residents who completed the anonymous Care surveys.
Congratulations to the Care staff who received positive feedback.
More emphasis was placed on person centred care. This approach enables the staff to deal
with residents as individuals with their own needs.
The Ombudsman received very few requests. The major problem seems to be the financial
abuse by children of their parents. Statistically the incidences were very low.
The budget for the financial year 2011/2012 made provision for the appointment of lifestyle
assistants at Panorama Palms and Witfield Park as it is impossible for one person to assist
all the residents.
Finance and Audit:
Trans-50 was exempted from paying tax by SARS. The capital expenditure amounted to
R7,86 million. The bulk of the money was spent on the addition of bathrooms to bedrooms
and for the upgrade of cottages.
The financial results were negative. Trans-50 anticipated the loss as money was utilized
from reserves to fund capital expenditure. The loss amounted to R969 650.
As far as the outlook for the next financial year is concerned, Trans-50 will continue to
upgrade cottages. Closed circuit television cameras will be installed in frail care units and
fire detection equipment will be installed in all main buildings. We are concerned about the
steep increase in electrical expenses.
Property:
An amount of R3,02 million was spent on the maintenance of the properties. Thirty seven life
right units were sold. An anonymous survey conducted amongst the residents to determine
the level of satisfaction, indicated that the residents are satisfied with the service received
from this division.
Trans-50 is fortunate to have capable property managers. They attended a workshop at
Trans-50 which was conducted by Ruan de Wet, Trans-50’s finance and property director.
Human Resources:
On 30 June 2011 we had a staff complement of two hundred and sixty four. The major
challenge that we experience is the appointment of registered nurses. There is a huge
shortage in the country.
The labour turnover was 10,2% in comparison with the labour turnover of 6,4% for the 2009-
2010 financial year. Salary increases were 6%. All staff received some or other training.
Absenteeism dropped from 1,67% to 1,65%.
ANNUAL REPORT
1 JULY 2010 – 30 JUNE 2011
Marketing:
The bed occupancy of the combined centres was 94,5% in comparison with 97% for
2009-2010. Seminars were held at centres, adverts were placed in newspapers, talks
were given on the radio and numerous projects were undertaken at centre level to
market the services of each centre.
Corporate issues:
Trans-50 admits all South Africans at our centres. The Committee drew up a
transformation policy to have an official document on the matter. We are also
appointing staff of all races into more senior positions.
Board members were given the option of which centre they would like to visit. This
gave everyone the opportunity to experience what happens at centre level. The visits
were productive and positive feedback was received by the staff.
Research:
Dr Sanet du Toit started with a research project to conduct Dementia Care mapping
at all our centres. The results assisted staff to improve our service rendering in the
dementia units. Questionnaires were completed on the quality of life of residents for a
doctoral thesis. The results will also be used to improve our service to our residents.
Expression of thanks:
A big thank you is extended to all our residents for their friendliness during the year.
Thanks to our management committees who really assisted our centre managers.
Some of our staff get up early in the morning to be in time for work. We want to thank
all our staff from the bottom of our hearts for your dedication, passion and
commitment. We do appreciate you.
The buck stops with the centre managers who carry a huge responsibility, a big thank
you as well. We realise that your jobs are not always easy.
To the Lord, who guided us during the year, all the praise.
May all of you, residents as well as staff, experience a blessed Christmas and may
2012 be a year of health and happiness.
Care & Lifestyle 2011
Close circuit television in frail care
I’m sure you can all remember the surveys that were conducted regarding the installation of
CCTV cameras in the frail care units? The majority of our employees, residents and their families
have welcomed this idea which has now been approved by the board of Trans-50. The aim of the
cameras is to protect our clients as well as our employees.
This system is being used by most big facilities and old age homes. We have currently started
with the installations at Panorama Palms and Fichardt Park and hope to have all the centres up
and running by June 2012.
Trans-50 Accreditation
As you are aware by now, Trans-50 has finally been accredited as a training provider to present
the community health work diploma.
Some of you have started the training and although it seems quite difficult, you can be assured
that your CCM will assist and support you during your training. Once you have obtained your
final results, the PoE will be moderated. Once the moderator is satisfied that the correct process
has been followed, your results will be sent to the HWSETA. The HWSETA will then conduct a
verification visit to ensure that the assessor and moderator has followed the correct steps during
the training and final assessment. You will then be listed on the national learner database and receive
the 140 credits for the training.
This training is part of the conditions of your employment as the organisation is responsible to
comply with legislation. The Department of Social development will have a register containing the
names of all carers who have completed training. If your name is not entered into the register,
you are by law not allowed to work in any organisation that provides care or services to older
persons.
I hope you enjoy your training and good luck!
Dementia care mapping and person centred care
Dr. Sanet du Toit has conducted dementia care mapping at Witfield Park, Fichardt Park, and
Panorama Palms. Acacia Park will take part in the mapping during December. Although there is
room for improvement, the general feedback from Dr. Du Toit has been positive. Her study looks
at the interaction between care staff and residents who have Alzheimer’s disease. She will now
compile reports on each centre and you will receive feedback from the CCM on the way forward.
I would like to thank all of you for putting your heart and soul into the care you render to our
residents. Trans-50 is truly blessed with dedicated employees who are committed in making a
significant difference in the lives of residents. Keep it up!
Trans-50 Seminar
During November, Trans-50 hosted its first national seminar in partnership with GCI managers on
“Taking charge of your retirement”. The event was held at the Wanderers Club in Johannesburg.
The seminar was aimed at people over the age of 50 who are still planning for retirement and
focussed on the emotional and financial preparedness for retirement. Both John Wilkinson and
Rae Labuschagne were speakers at the event.
Unfortunately we did not reach the number of attendees as anticipated, but still made it a
success. We have received positive feedback from the attendees and will consider doing this on
a bigger scale in the near future. Thank you to the team at head office and especially to Teresa
who assisted. A big thanks to Marinda and her team from Witfield Park who donated water for the
tables, shopping bags and lip balm – this was a great hit with the attendees.
SANC annual fees
Please remember to pay your annual nursing council fees in full. Trans-50 cannot by law, employ
any professional nurse who is not paid up with the nursing council and employees who fail to
comply with this condition of employment will not be allowed to work or be paid until such time
that proof has been received of your registration with the nursing council. Herewith is some information
from the council as well as the fees for the different categories for 2012:
For the calendar year 2012, the Council will permit practitioners who are 60 years of age or older
on 1 January 2012 a discount on the Annual Fees. This is intended to permit practitioners who
may have retired to keep their name on the register should they wish. Having their name on the
register will enable such practitioners to work on a part-time basis or to assist with local or national
needs or programmes in a temporary capacity if called upon to do so. Please note that
Council has decided to grant discount based on the ages indicated rather than retirement status
because there is not a standard retirement age in South Africa.
The amounts for the different categories are set out in the table below.
Category Annual Fee 25% Discount 50% Discount
Registered Nurses and Midwives R460,00 R345,00 R230,00
Enrolled Nurses and Midwives R290,00 R217,50 R145,00
Enrolled Nursing Auxiliaries R200,00 R150,00 R100,00
To qualify for the 25% discount, the practitioner must be 60-64 years of age on 1 January 2012.
To qualify for the 50% discount, the practitioner must be 65 years of age or older on 1 January
2012. The annual fees for 2012 must be paid by 31 December 2011.
Please pay as soon as possible to avoid the last minute rush. The above amounts include VAT.
Restoration fees effective from 1 January 2012
The restoration fees will increase on 1 January 2012. The amounts for the different categories
are set out in the table below.
Category
Christi’s column
Normal
Restoration Fee
Reduced
Restoration Fee
Registered Nurses and Midwives R1380,00 R90,00
Enrolled Nurses and Midwives R870,00 R90,00
Enrolled Nursing Auxiliaries R600,00 R90,00
The increased fees apply to restorations that are EFFECTIVE from a date after 31 December
2011 - no matter when the fee is paid. In other words, if you meet all the requirements for
restoration after 31 December 2011 OR if you request restoration with effect from a date after 31
December 2011. The reduced restoration fee will only apply if your name was removed from the
register at your own request - this must be confirmed with the Council before paying the reduced
amount. The above amounts all include 14% VAT.
Thank you to every employee, care practitioner, supervisor, enrolled nurse, registered nurse,
CCM, lifestyle consultant and lifestyle assistant for making a difference during this year. Thank
you for the passion, enthusiasm and creativity you bring to the centre and for taking care of
residents because it is a calling and not “just your job”.
The year has had many challenges for some. Thank you for persevering and finding the silver
lining on every dark cloud.
May you have a blessed Christmas with family and friends and a very prosperous 2012.
Take care!
OUTSPAN OUTSPAN OUTSPAN OUTLOOK
OUTLOOK
A range of new activities were introduced for residents in the frail
section of Outspan.
The sensory aprons were made by one of healthy residents. Used
for promoting use of the hands, provides items to interact with and
for residents with repetitive sensory movements.
Canvas painting - created by a local school, is used to create theme activities e.g day at the
beach. The students seen in the picture holding the canvas up completed this painting overnight.
Tac-Tile wall hung activity
panel - Consist of an exciting
range of visual, tactile and auditory
features to activate and stimulate
our frail residents senses.
The letter below was forwarded by Outspan Management Committee Chairperson Rev
Mike Heppes
Dear Lorna
Letter of Thanks and Appreciation
Our sincere thanks to you and the Outspan, for the wonderful donation of the Yamaha
Electric Organ. What an amazing gift, and we look forward to making a “joyful noise” as we
sing our songs of worship and praise.
We are sad to hear that you will be moving to Bloemfontein early next year, because you
have been such a blessing to us and a joy to work with. We take this opportunity to thank
you for all your kind assistance, and we pray that the Lord will bless you richly.
In His precious Name
Jenny Caldwell
Secretary/Treasure
Students from a local beauty college treated our care staff to a day of
pampering. Staff enjoyed two 2 hour treatments
each, they could choose between a pedicure &
manicure, deep
cleansing facial make up treatment or a full
body massage. They truly enjoyed the
pampering as they returned back to the centre
revitalized and beaming.
OUTSPAN OUTSPAN OUTLOOK
OUTLOOK
The World Cup fever was full upon our residents and staff. The dining room was decorated
with all the participant countries flags. Feedem prepared a special lunch to celebrate the
start of the games on 9 th September. Staff used their Supporter t- shirts to show support for
our national team and country, whilst residents decorated their walkers and wheelchairs. A
TV was placed in the dining room, allowing residents the opportunity to view the games dur-
ing meal times. Residents unite together in the TV lounge to support the Boks on days
when our boys played. The early exit of the Spring Bok didn’t discourage residents from
watching the games, it made a little more interesting with residents supporting opposing
teams.
Outspan’s catering contractors Feedem held its annual KZN culinary competition in
September.
Seen in the photo below is the Outspan team who achieved 3 rd place in the competition.
The 1 st and 2 nd place winners went on to compete in a regional culinary competion held in
Teresa’s tale
Getting to Zero
World Aids Day this year is about “Getting to Zero” Zero New HIV Infections. Zero Discrimination
and Zero Aids related deaths.
Backed by the United Nations the “Getting to Zero” campaign runs until 2015. The World AIDS
Campaign focus on “Zero Aids Related Deaths” which signifies a push towards greater access to
treatment for all.
ATTITUDE
BEHAVIOUR
COMMITMENT
[Published by Ripple Effect and written by Alan Brand]
What is your Attitude to HIV? Do you believe you could get HIV? If you believe this is someone
else’s problem and not yours, you will never take action to protect yourself from getting HIV.
The environment can also influence a person’s attitude to HIV. People living in a country at war
would worry about being killed by snipers than HIV. What is your attitude to other people with HIV?
These are all important to your decisions to protect yourself.
If you have the right attitude to HIV and believe that this could happen to you then you need to
consider your Behaviour. Evaluating your sexual behaviour would mean considering your
behaviour could put you at risk of getting HIV. If you behaviour is such that you have many sexual
partners then you need to consider whether you have the ability to practice safe sex. If you are
faithful to one partner then you would need to discuss their attitude and behaviour with them to
ensure that you are not at risk of being infected with HIV by your partner.
Finally, your Commitment in all of these discussions about safer sex is the key to remaining HIV
negative. If you are committed to not getting the HIV virus then you will take HIV infection seriously
and you will take action to ensure that you do not get the virus. Safer sex is not only about not
having sex it is about what you believe about life and how much you value that life.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS – by Dr Allison Glass
My HIV test result came back positive what now?
Infection with HIV has many serious implications including the need for lifelong medical care. For
this reason every diagnosis of HIV should be confirmed with repeat testing on a second blood
sample. Once the diagnosis is confirmed a baseline HIV viral load and CD4+ count should be done
to determine the level of viral activity and the amount of damage already done to the immune
system.
What is a CD4+ count?
The CD4+ cells are the part of the immune system infected and destroyed by HIV. They are the
cells that co-ordinate the immune system’s response to infection and cancer. A CD4+ count is a
measure of the number of CD4+ cells present I the blood. As the CD4+ count drops, you become
more prone to developing infections and certain types of cancer. A person is considered to have
AIDS once the CD4+ count is less than 200 cells. The WHO recommends that everyone with a
CD4+ count less than 350 cells should be started on ART. Your doctor may recommend starting
treatment at higher CD4+ counts. After starting treatment the CD4+ count should go up. The
amount and rate at which the CD4+ count goes up on ART varies from person to person.
Many factors affect the CD4+ count including other infections, cancer and stress.
PALMs PRET !
Wêreldbeker koors loop hoog in Boktober-maand
sing! Ons is mos Patrioties.
Daar is ook ‘n touchies wedstryd gehou, waar Geratec teen The Champs (Panorama Palms)
skare begroet.
Hierdie onderskeie Haka’s is in ontsettende geheimhouding geoefen. Veral Peter Herbert,
Shaun was weer
se sokkerwedstryd so geniet het.
spelers so begeesterd, hul het by tye mekaar ge”tackle”!!! Ons het oplaas gelykop gespeel
en is die keuse gestel of ons so uit die stryd tree en of daar “Sudden death” gespeel sal
word.
Touchies by verre nog lekkerder was as die sokker!
Die sprekers was
genooi om op 25-26 Oktober by
Dementia SA se konferensie op te tree. Ons oord is as Suid-Afrikaanse voorbeeld voorgehou
ten opsigte van ander
aftree-oorde.
To all the Staff at Panorama Palms
We, as a family, would like to thank you all
for your kindness, love and care shown to
‘n pragtige babaseun, Caylem ryker
eregaste gestuur. Oorde soos Huis Stillerwëe, Minerva Gardens, Ons Huis, Resthaven en
Boshof se Aftree-Oord is genooi.
Elke pakkie was
Me
So gesê, so gedaan.
GO BOKKE
Die atmosfeer was gelaai
HAVING FUN WITH TERESA
In other words – attending a workshop presented by her. The “Managing Conflict Module 1”
workshop was presented at Jakaranda Park on 30 September. Interesting indeed, with lots of
laughs and discoveries about ourselves. Owl/Foxes, teddy bears and turtles all came to light. This
was really an example of how our value “Teamwork through unity in diversity” becomes a reality.
The differences in personalities, character and temperament can be used as an excellent tool to
strengthen rather than weaken a team. Thanks Teresa for once again improving not only our
individual performance but also our team performance.
HUWELIKSKLOKKIES VIR
JAN SE DOGTER
Hoe trots kan ouers nou wees.
Jan – onderhoudsbestuurder
by Jakaranda Park – en sy
vrou Alet se pragtige dogter
Janine het op Saterdag 29
Oktober in die huwelik getree
met haar verloofde, Donald.
Vir weke het ons elke oggend
‘n vinnige “update” gekry van
hoe die reëlings vorder. Die
dames by die kantoor het egter
maar bietjie afgehaal gevoel
want ongelukkig kon Jan –
tipies man – nie vir ons die
presiese ‘detail’ gee van hoe
die rok, blomme en troukoek
sou lyk nie. Toemaar Jan ons
sal dit ook maar aan senuwees
toeskryf.
Baie geluk aan julle almal.
Mag dit die begin van vele
vreugdevolle familiefeeste
wees.
CELEBRATING SPECIAL DAYS
Here at Jakaranda Park, Secretaries and Bosses day are
regarded as a very big deal. Not because we want to be
lazy and get away from the office but because we really
appreciate the difference that every person makes in the
team.
This year Marna took me for a breakfast at House of
Coffees in Woodlands. Afterwards we went “shoe
shopping”. We needed just the right shoes to compliment
our stylish uniforms and managed to do just that. What
more can a woman ask for!?!
Like every year , Bosses Day happens to coincide with
the Exco and results in Marna not being here on the
actual day. This year Jan and I surprised her by taking her
for a “Boere Breakfast” at Oppiplaas in Waverley, the day
before. A great time was had by all, but boy was it difficult
to work afterwards. Our tummies were just too full.
Special days are made to be celebrated and we did just
that in grand style!
TOTSIENS AAN BOSSIE
Totsiens gaan maar meestal met hartseer gepaard.
Veral as iemand weggaan wat ‘n groot bydrae gelewer
aantal termyne as voorsitter van Jakaranda Park se
Bestuurskomitee moes Bossie (Samuel Boshoff) bedank
Soos almal
weet was die tema hierdie jaar “rock and roll”.
verhuis. Sy en haar man ry
graag fiets en het sowaar die
OFM CLASSIC fiets wedren
gery van 36 km. Die opdraandes in die
platteland is natuurlik heeltemaal anders as
Warm Words from Witfield
Luckily the obstacles in the photos are not a ‘usual’ face at Witfield Park. It
formed part of the recent Health & Safety Committee’s Awareness Day. After
Marita gave the staff a brief overlview of the committee’s responibilities, the
staff members were divided in groups to identify all the different obstacles
that Rohan displayed. There were yummy prizes for the group with the
correct answers.
After the exercise Rohan showed interesting video
clips. The morning concluded with the Health &
Safety Committee doing a dance on the Hill Billy
Rock song.
Warm Words from Witfield
TEAMBUILDING @ Witfield Park: The employees recently held a concert to show off
their talents. This was a joint venture with Geratec employees and was thoroughly enjoyed
by all.
Seen here are Willie Knoetze, Catering
Manager (a ball room dancer), with
Gugulethu Maebela & Rejoice
Mhlongo, care practitioners and both
taking ball room dancing classes. Their
performances were excellent.
Seen here are our three male care practitioners. They
are all just as good actors as they are care givers and
are loved by all. They are Eliot Makema, Goodwell Sabani
(student) and Johannes Merahe. Thanks for sharing
your talents with us.
Ruwayda Adonis and Willie Knoetze
shared their singing talents with us.
During September Teresa Barnard was the speaker at a breakfast seminar with the topic “Care
for the Carer” hosted at Witfield Park. Seen here are some of the attendees, both from Witfield
Park and other retirement homes in the area. After the scrumptious breakfast we were all
inspired by Teresa’s talk.
Warm Words from Witfield
Haar seun skryf:
Dear Marinda & Staff
