Trans-50 se finansiële jaar het op 30
Junie 2010 geëindig. Dit was ʼn jaar vol
vreugde en ook ʼn laagtepunt of twee. Ek
sal kortliks wil terugvoer gee oor twee
gebeure gedurende die jaar.
Daar was vir ʼn geruime tyd ʼn vakature
op die Direksie van Trans-50. Mev.
Ntombi Sixaba, ʼn interne ouditeur van
die Departement van Finansies in
Gauteng is aangestel. Sy het dadelik
betrokke geraak by die analise van
Trans-50 se risiko’s. Trans-50 is
Hierdie mening is
selfs gehuldig deur inwoners wat
ontevrede was omtrent sekere situasies
by die oorde.
Daar is strukture in plek waarmee die
deelnemers tevrede is. Trans-50 word
goed bestuur. Kommunikasiekanale is in
verbeter.
Die grootste besorgdheid van alle
deelnemers is van ʼn finansiële aard. Die
raad van direkteure is besorg oor die
ELIXIR
Potensiaal, vooruitsige & verwagtinge
finansiële volhoubaarheid van die
maatskappy en die bekostigbaarheid
van dienste. Inwoners sowel as hulle
familie is besorg oor voortgesette
beskikbaarheid van aftreefondse en
die bekostigbaarheid van versorging.
Die genoegsame voorsiening van
personeel en dienste is die
bekommernis van die Raad,
personeel, inwoners en hulle
familie.
Alhoewel strukture vir kommunikasie
binne die maatskappy en op oordvlak
bestaan, is daar ʼn besorgdheid oor
die voortdurende gebrek aan
kommunikasie.
Daar word spesifiek verwys na die
wyse waarop belangrike sake vanaf
hoofkantoor na almal vanaf die
personeel by hoofkantoor tot
kort skiet.
ʼn Groot dankie aan almal wat
deelgeneem het en veral ook aan
Elna Gross wat die navorsingsprojek
onderneem het.
Potential, prospects & expectations
Trans-50’s financial year ended on 30 June 2010. It’s been a year with many ups and
downs. I would like to touch on two major events during the year.
The Board of Trans-50 had a vacancy for quite some time. Mrs Ntombi Sixaba, an internal
auditor of the Department of Finance in Gauteng was appointed. She immediately got
involved by assisting us with our risk analysis. Trans-50 is fortunate to have such a
competent director on board.
The second major event was a research project which was undertaken to determine how
residents, board members, staff members and family members experienced Trans-50.
The participants expressed their satisfaction that offices, centres and gardens are
generally tidy, clean and well kept.
The participants, staff as well as residents, feel part of a big family. They are happy and
enjoy their work or they enjoy living in the centres. This view was even expressed by
residents who were unhappy about some other issues.
There are structures in place that satisfy participants. Trans-50 is well managed.
Communication channels are in place and there are high standards of care. Resident
empowerment structures are in place although utilisation of the structures should improve.
The major concern of all participating groups was of a financial nature. The board of
directors are concerned about the sustainability of the company and affordability of
services. Residents as well as family members are concerned about retirement finances
and the affordability of care.
Adequate provision of staff and services is the concern of the board, staff members as well
as residents and family members.
Although structures for communication within the company and at centre level presently
exist, there is concern about regular breakdown in communication, specifically the way in
which important aspects are communicated from head office to everyone. This includes
staff at head office to staff at centres and to residents and family members.
These aspects are all being investigated and ways and means will have to be found to
improve our service delivery where we were previously found wanting.
A big thank you to all those who participated in the research programme and especially to
Elna Gross who conducted the research for and on behalf of Trans-50.
ALIDA SWART—"Ouma gaan drink Koffie in Australia"
dieselfde kamer was.
buite Bloemfontein.
was.

almal heeltyd gelag.
Ek moes sowaar ‘n oop koffie plek
gaan soek daardie tyd van die aand. Al plek waar die ligte nog aan
was, was by Steers maar hul deure was eintlik al toe.
hart! Ek geniet elke oomblik met hulle. Die heel besonderste is dié
wat so graag hul geheime resepte of breipatrone vir my gee. Ek
Aftree Oord kom bly.
Dis ‘n voorreg

na 18 maande as bestuurder by Acaciapark.
Christa Pretorius is dieselfde oggend verwelkom as
verversings. Ons vertrou dat Christa vir baie
gelukkige jare die leisels by Acaciapark sal vashou.
Poeding in ‘n Koppie
1 poedinglepel (halfrond) bruismeel
1 poedinglepel (halfrond) kakao
1 poedinglepel (halfrond)suiker
Roer deurmekaar in ‘n koppie
Voeg by en roer weer:
1 poedinglepel olie
1 poedinglepel melk
4 poedinglepels geklitste eier
so lekker!
Mev. Rheeders speel op haar eie
“klavier” terwyl ‘n vrywilliger in
dieselfde vertrek op ‘n klawerbord
musiek maak. Die foto kom op die
kamermuur want geen foto van haar
vroeër jare se klavierspel is
beskikbaar nie. Haar man kyk toe en
wie weet watter mooi herinneringe roep
dit nie op nie.
Hierdie tafelversierings uit
Acaciapark se wintertuin was
genoeg om enige inwoner
welkom te laat voel by hierdie
jaar se Vadersdagete. Dit is met
baie sorg deur mev. Martha
Lippens, een van ons kunstige
vrywilligers, gemaak.
Terwyl die ander spanlede toekyk,
gooi mev. Lippens’n 4 met ‘n maxidobbelsteen
om ‘n punt te kry vir die
voltooiing van hul span se
kewertjie-prent. Twee spanne
verswakte inwoners in rolstoele
speel die kewer-spel met groot
dobbelstene wat gemaak is uit twee
melk-kartonne.
Die kolle daarop is uitgesny uit
“foamelite” bakkies. Iets uit niets
kan word vir ‘n
ACACIA
hoofgebou.
Sommige van die sokkerspan en ondersteuners was
geklee in regte sokkerhemde. Kinders en kleinkinders is
opgekommandeer ivir die Sokkerwedstryd van alle
Sokkerwedstryde.
lekker blyplek!
bedien.
Dit
het hulle egter nie afgeskrik nie en
na baie sweet en blaas kon ons
uiteindelik ‘n Vuvuzela koning en
koningin kroon.
voortdurende proesbuie uiteindelik
worsbroodjies geniet want ‘n
lafenissie was behoorlik nodig na
soveel opwinding. Daar wys ons
toe weer ‘n mens is NOOIT TE
OUD OM TE LEER OF OM PRET
TE HE NIE!!!!
JAKARANDA
Ouma Malie Meyer se verbasing was groot toe sy by die
troon sou wees tydens haar verjaarsdagviering.
Bestuurder, Iris.
On the 11th of May 2010, five
residents from Jakaranda
Park took a kombi ride to
Pretoria Zoo. It was Free
Senior Citizen Day. Jacob took
them at 09:00 and went to
fetch them again from the zoo
at 14:00. On their return I was
ready with the camera. So
much was seen and their feet
were tired from all the
walking. Aunty Babs Enslin
and Aunty Lena van der
Waltsleben even took a cable
car ride with a very scared
man.
Fun was had by all, but there
is no place like home. I am
sure they rushed home to kick
off their shoes and enjoy a
nice cup of tea after all the
excitement of the day.
On 29 May Outspan celebrated its 21st
Birthday. Resident's family and friends were
invited to join in the celebration and they
were treated to a delicious two course meal
and entertainment provided by Outspan's
manager, Lorna and her husband Reg
Stuart.
Muriel Sanders and Sybil Atkinson together
with our longest serving staff member
Marlene Saunders, all of whom have been
at the Outspan for 21 years had the honour
of cutting the cake and popping the
Champaign.
The party ended with guests and residents
taking to the dance floor to show off some of
their dance moves.
On May 13 residents went on an excursion to
the Moses Mabida Stadium and thereafter for a
buffet lunch to Centre Court, at the Sun Coast
Casino. 5 of our residents braved the courage
to take the Sky Cart all the way to the top of the
arch across the stadium. Their words, when
they joined the rest of us again, were "the view
is utterly amazing, and Durban is a
beautiful city". At the buffet lunch, residents
indulged in a variety of mouth watering dishes
and desserts. On our way back home we took a
drive along the golden mile to view all the upgrades
made to the beach front area for the
Soccer World Cup.
OUTSPAN
For the past year, members of the Yellowwood Park Evening WI
have been visiting residents at the Outspan Residential Home in
Durban.
We arrive once a month, on the third Monday, and with the
assistance of our very extraordinary crafty member, Jean Ball,
we set the residents a task.
What have we done, something for each season, Christmas,
Easter, Mother's Day or whatever event we can think of for that
month.
Of course everything is very simple so that some with arthritic
hands can manage everything and nobody is left out. We have
made birthday cards, bracelets by threading beads, teddy bears
with pipe cleaners, fluffy dogs stuck over part of an egg box, the
eyes and ears sometimes end up a bit lob-sided, but who cares.
The residents really enjoy themselves and it has now got to the
stage where they are sitting at the big table in their wheelchairs
or with their simmers next to them, waiting for our arrival.
This month we are colouring in flags of all the nations at the
World Cup and they will be strung around the lounge. It is quite
amazing how a couple of hours of your time once a month can
give such enjoyment to these Senior Citizens.
PANORAMA
Daar was operasangers, minnesangers,
‘n minnaar sing. Dames wat “dance in
the rain” met sambreeltjies en eina
uitrustings en vele meer. Die inwoners
het die optrede terdeë geniet en gevra
dat die Palms meer van hierdie tipe
konserte reël.
At the Palms we believe that we need to
celebrate special days like Mother’s &
Father’s day. On the Friday, bookmarks
with a special quotation, were given out
at the library. On the Sunday we usually
invite the family to join their mother or
father on this special occasion. We
spoiled the mothers with Turkish delight
and our fathers with biltong. Our frail
care residents were also spoilt with
bags of pink or yellow & green
marshmallows. It is important that our
residents feel loved and cherished.
Alwena van der Vyfer wou ‘n
kleedrepetisie iewers hou om te
verseker dat die kwaliteit van
haar kabaret op standaard is. Sy
was so dierbaar om die kabaret
gratis vir die inwoners aan te
bied en het ons dit ook adverteer
as ons Moederdag “special”.
Haar kabaret sou in dieselfde
eetsaal staangemaak is. Die wenners van die
Paashoed parade was, Mev Nienaber, Mev
Niemann, Mev Geldenhuys, Mev Lotter en Me
Naude.
ander, troospryse. By ontvangs het ons hierdie
jaar ons draadkruis op ‘n besonderse simboliese
wyse uitgebeeld.
Hom.
Ons het ‘n skenking van paasbolletjies vanaf
Pick n Pay ontvang wat inwoners by die
Sondagete geniet het en Paaseiers met ‘n
paasboodskap is die Donderdag aan die
inwoners gegee.
Ons inwoners in die Versorgingsafdeling is ook
met Paaseiers en ‘n paasboodskap bederf terwyl
daar gesing is “Want so lief het God die wêreld
gehad.”
On 26 April 2010 our residents visited the
SA Cheese festival at Bien Donne. They
were very excited not having visited a
festival in ages! Residents could stop at
different stalls to taste cheese and even
some wine.
Mrs Reynolds mentioned that she
thoroughly enjoyed Zamar’s performance
and the music had them on their
feet ......dancing.
Some of the residents even had the
privilege of watching Nataniel in action; a
demonstration sponsored by Checkers
Cheese World. There was enough
comfortable seating to enable the
residents to enjoy the festival at their
leisure.
Soccer Nostalgia .. that is what we experienced the
past few days at Trans50 Panorama Palms Retirement
Village. Of course our GEES started WAY before the
actual start of the World Cup.
The preparation for this World Cup was a true team
effort from staff as well as residents. Six South African
flags were hoisted at the entrance to show where our
loyalty lies. we were backing our Bafana team all the
way.
The flags of the different qualifying countries were
strung together at reception, with flying paper soccer
balls for a bit of variation on the theme. Even our
“Ouma & Oupa” dolls at reception hung on to their own
South African flag, showing their patriotism!
Different posters in the dining hall explained the origin
of Zakumi, & posters with the words of our country’s
anthem. There was even a step-by-step guide on how
to do the Diski dance! This was to enable our residents
to be knowledgeable when the soccer-theme pops up
in conversation they had to know the lingo!
The hall was colourfully decorated with the Fifa
emblem, South African flags, Zakumi’s portrait and
flying soccer balls. We even showed our support by
putting the flags on our own kombis.
The residents had the same enthusiasm and displayed
the flags on their cars. Although Cape Town was
slower by showing their support when the Soccer
fever hit Cape Town we were unstoppable!! With the
visitors hitting our shores & the songs over the radio
we started to feel the build up to the opening of the
Soccer World Cup.

PANORAMA
On 2 June 2010 we combined a
welcome and a volunteer tea. It was
heart warming to see how many of our
residents were involved in the
programme as well as rendering a
service to their fellow residents.
We invited 42 individuals to attend the
tea. Trans50 Panorama Palms wants to
thank our volunteers from the bottom of
our hearts; for hard work and
dedication which make the Palms a
unique place to stay.
To management & staff
What a glorious treat you all gave us yesterday.
The braying and buzzing of vuvuzelas and the
cheers and shouts brought us out of our homes to
view the teams and “coaches” marching by. Lots
of us would have loved to march along with you!
At the field the natural grandstand was impossible
for us to climb, but you thoughtfully provided
shelter from the icy cold wind, chairs to sit on and
refreshment stands.
The vuvus and whistles which were blown
throughout the game, and the cheers and laughter
made a deafening noise, but it was all part of the
fun, how we laughed at the antics of the players- it
looked as though they were really enjoying themselves.
I felt sorry for Shaun for trying to discipline
the teams and the endeavours with the red and
yellow cards were quite comical. And as for
Annemarie with her vivid blue wig, I didn’t
recognise her until half time!!
The diski dancers and the warriors war dance
were a treat to watch. And the final Victory parade
with the trophy held high and led by our flag
waving manager brought cheers and applause
from everyone.
I’m sure we all enjoyed it much more than if we
had gone to the great Cape Town Stadium – there
was no distance to travel, no transport problems or
traffic jams, and we felt so safe in our own dear
Panorama Palms village. A huge thank you to you
all. We really do appreciate all you do for us. Roll
on the next event!!!
From a great fan
Rita Erasmus (E48)
Dear Annemarie
Never, in almost 3 years I’ve been at the Palms,
have I enjoyed anything as much as the Soccer
match on Wednesday afternoon. It was amazing!!
All the trouble and organisation you all went
to was unbelievable. Thank you to ALL of you for
giving so much cheer to us oldies. We even forgot
the cold for an hour or two.
Sincerely
Ann Krause (D26)
Dear Mrs Buys
Will you please convey my sincere appreciation
to whoever was responsible for organising the
soccer match. All the spectators appeared to
have enjoyed themselves judging by their comments,
as the teams displayed their skills (pity
there were not World Cup scouts present as
there may have been a couple of signings).
Apart from enjoyment it was an opportunity to
meet fellow residents that we had not met before.
The cherry on the cake was that the
“Panorama Rovers” made us proud by giving the
opposition a soccer lesson.
Wat ‘n wonderlike spel gespeel deur oud
en jonk. Dit was fantasties en kleurvol.
Rooi en geel kaarte is regverdig
uitgedeel. Jolyt en gil kom van
toeskouers en spelers... daarom sê ek en
my man, Panorama Palms is ‘n vyfster
hotel, met al sy wonderlike personeel en
wil ons net hier bly met al sy prêt en
plesier, waar ‘n bleskop se hare gekam
word.
Groot, Groot dankie Palms Warriors,
Geratec, die Bestuur en personeel
Baie, baie geluk Palms Warriors met
julle oorwinning. Ek het lanklaas so
PANORAMA SOCCER FEVER 1 7
The real festivities started on Friday, 11 June 2010. The Palms hosted a Bafana bafana lunch
for our residents. The staff dressed appropriately in their Bafana t-shirts. The tables were
decorated with flowers, serviettes & overlays inspired by the colours of our country’s flag.
Small leaflets on the table explained the different ways of greeting the visitors from the
different countries. Residents even rocked up with their own soccer themed clothing,
vuvuzelas & headgear. Music was provided on the stoep contributing to the excitement we
were all feeling. At 12h00 vuvuzelas were blown instead of the usual dining hall bell, to show
its kickoff time for the World Cup and time for an AYOBA scrumptious meal. Our Head
Office even agreed that some of the staff could go home to watch the opening of the World
Cup. During this month, all that staff & residents could talk about was World Cup Soccer..
but also about our own upcoming soccer match.
7 July 2010 the day our residents anticipated our own soccer match at the Palms.
Everything was planned to the T. Our Maintenance team was our Waka Waka Warriors, who
did their own Haka version inspired by the Wimpy advert. The Care Team, our nurses, were
our very own cheerleaders and our Shakira inspired Waka dancers. During their tea breaks
& lunch hours they were at it perfecting their steps. Special t-shirts in our Company’s
colours and with “Ayoba Palms Warriors” on the back were made for all the staff members.
We were so ready to make mince meat out of our competitors.
On the morning of 7 July, the White Marquee tent rose to be our own Soccer City Stadium. It
was decorated with balloons in the colours of our South African flag. Residents could
comfortably sit under shelter and watch the soccer match.
The First Aid tent was also our designated DJ station! Geratec provided boerewors rolls,
cool drinks & chips for sale to spectators. At 13h30 the coach, but also the manager of the
village, PRIMADONNA (not Maradona) led the way from the reception area.
The whole parade followed the coach and they walked through the village showing off our
Palms Warriors GEES! The song in the background, “Waving flag..As we go to the
beautiful game.. when I get older, I will be stronger, they will call me freedom just like a
waving flag Staying forever young!” The residents cheered with excitement.
The match was nerve wrecking. Our referee even gave a red card to a spectator who dared
to kick the ball back on to the field. Our linesmen, our own residents, were very good at
showing us where the ball left the field. The Palms Warriors were victorious with the
scoreboard showing. We won 5 to 2 against Geratec Magic!
There were prizes for the best goalie, player of the match, a second prize, but when we
received the trophy, a vase with a small soccer ball, the Palms Warriors just went mad. The
Palm Warriors did our victory walk on the field, flying the South African flag but also our
own Palms flags.. the song of R Kelly..”A Sign of a Victory” played while our hearts
burst with pride & joy, our eyes teary. We felt so proud to be South African and to be part
of the nation’s success with the World Cup.

WITFIELD
Investec Money sponsored our Bingo open
day which Witfield Park hosted. Several
other centres attended the afternoon. It was
a most enjoyable afternoon and
everybody were surprised about the
Lindt chocolate Easter Bunnies they
received and the snacks was very
tasty.
A Witfield Park resident, Mr Lesley Bullock (94),
loves building sail ships. He started this hobby
after moving to Witfield Park during 2004. Seen
here is Les with the 9 th ship that he has completed.
It took him approximately six weeks to
build this ship. Four of the boats are in Australia
where his one daughter resides; one is in East
London; three are in Gauteng and one in his
own room. Les has severe Rheumatoid Athritis
in both hands. The kits are also very expensive
(between R2000 and R4000 each) as all the tiny
parts are imported from Spain. Because of these
reasons he says he will not be able to build another
boat again.
The Christian Seamen
Organization recently
brought Rina Hugo &
Jammies Jamneck to
Witfield Park for a show.
The concert was free of
charge and donations were
collected for the
Organization.

verwag.
Our Mother & Daughter Tea was
once again a wonderful event.
The renowned singer, Rouel
daughters planned and worked
together!
Incapacity, disability and future planning
The number of persons suffering from diminished capacity is not just increasing worldwide
but also in South Africa due to the aging population which in South Africa, currently consists
of about 7% of the total population.
Unfortunately, as much as we would like to avoid growing older it is part of life and gradually
with age and declining health we will all at some stage, possibly lose the ability to administer
our assets, make financial decisions and care for ourselves adequately.
In our industry we are often confronted by spouses, family or children of residents who are
at their titter’s end as their loved one has become so frail or has severe diminished cognitive
capacity and are unable to make decisions regarding their financial and or physical well
being. Often the family is so overwhelmed with the physical and emotional components
surrounding the affected person that the management of financial affairs are the last thing
on their mind.
Since incapacity can result from unexpected acute illness, injury or long-term degenerative
conditions, every individual is to some degree vulnerable to possibly becoming incapable
whether it is mental or physical incapacity. Although competency is ill-defined, physicians,
psychiatrist and other health care professionals have various tools which they use to assess
competency.
People with Alzheimer’s disease should discuss their financial and health related concerns
with their family and decide who will make decisions on their behalf when they are no longer
able to do so themselves. Once Alzheimer symptoms become serious, the affected person
will no longer have the ability to make these decisions for him/herself.
What is the solution? An individual can allow another person to act on his/her behalf through
a power of attorney. A power of attorney is a formal legal document in terms of which one
person (the agent) concludes a juristic act (an act which creates a legal relationship and
which has legal consequences) on behalf of another person (the principal) e.g. an elderly
parent granting a child the power of attorney to transact on his/her behalf. There are two
types of power of attorney:
1. A general power of attorney is granted when the principal provides a general
authorisation for the nominated person to transact on his/her behalf. It need not be for
all transactions in general but may be to act generally relating to certain types of
transactions or in specific business dealings.
2. A special power of attorney differs from general power of attorney in that the principal
only authorises the agent to enter into a specific transaction. This special power of
attorney terminates when the authorised transactions have been completed.
The Mental Health Care Act provides a cost effective solution where a person who is
“mentally ill” or has a severe or profound intellectual disability in that an administrator can be
appointed for such a person. A person, who is unable to manage their own affairs due to
old age, is however excluded from this act unless they also suffer from a mental illness.
A mental illness refers to a mental health related illness which has been diagnosed by an
authorised practitioner. In the event where an elderly person is mentally incapacitated but
has not been diagnosed with a mental health related illness the only solution is to apply for
the appointment of a curator bonis. This is however a lengthy and costly exercise as it
involves an application to the high court. Continued on page 23..
2 2
Incapacity, disability and future planning continued from previous
page
Some disadvantages of curatorship are the lack of measures to safeguard and control the
principal’s finances as the potential for abuse, neglect or maladministration remains. In spite
of the curator bonis being limited to administering the property of the incapable person, he/
she does become involved in the day-to-day needs of the principal which is time-consuming.
In a Discussion Paper published for comment in 2004 the law commission proposed that a
change to the law is necessary to provide for the following:
2 3
• An alternative to the curatorship system which consist of a multiple system which
includes a default arrangement, short-term and longer-term measures. The proposed
alternative provides for assisted decision-making with regard to financial affairs as well
as personal welfare.
• Introduction into our law of the concepts of the enduring power of attorney and the
conditional power of attorney. The enduring power of attorney endures the subsequent
incapacity of the person who granted it, while a conditional power of attorney comes
into effect only on incapacity. The Commission suggests that it should be possible to
grant enduring and conditional powers of attorney in respect of financial affairs as well
as personal welfare.
It is for the above reasons that one should consider an advance directive or a living will
which will outline your wishes for treatment and care if you are no longer able to make these
decisions yourself.
An advance directive enables the individual to:
Give their consent to particular forms of treatment;
Refuse certain treatments e.g. life-sustaining or life-prolonging procedures;
Choose someone who will make decisions about care and treatment on their behalf;
(The incapable adult will have the peace of mind knowing that the person he/she has
selected will be making decisions on his/her behalf, and it could provide certainty – third
parties will know what wishes have been expressed and that a representative has been
selected to act when it becomes necessary;
The ability to make one’s own choices does not have to be restricted by infirmity or
incapacity; it is purely a matter of planning ahead for the unforeseen to ensure that we have
a voice, and we are heard, until the end.
Keep safe & well until next month!
Urinary tract infection in the elderly.
An overgrowth of germs in the urinary tract can cause significant discomfort such as painful
urination, lower abdominal pain, back ache and loin pain, an urgent and frequent need to
urinate even when there is very little or no urine in the bladder.
Urinary tract infections commonly start of as an inflammation of the urethra (urethritis). It may
spread to the bladder (cystitis) and further to the kidneys causing pylonephritis which may
lead to kidney damage. At worst the germs may spread to the blood stream (bacteremia)
and may ultimately cause death.
One of the common risks for urinary tract infection in the elderly is use of a catheter.
Long-term urinary catheterization encourages growth of bacteria in the urinary tract. Most
people will have an overgrowth of bacteria in the urinary system by about 30 days when
catheterized. This makes urinary tract infection a very likely infection for the elderly in care
facilities.
The risk for urinary tract infection may be increased by presence of other diseases such as
diabetes mellitus, because high urine glucose levels are favourable for bacterial growth.
Obstructions caused by kidney stones, or enlarged prostate gland can predispose an
individual to urinary tract infection.
Proximity between the urethra and the anus makes Ecoli, bacteria normally found in the
intestines, a common culprit in urinary tract infections. However other bacteria, fungi, and
viruses, may cause urinary tract infection.
Urinary tract infections are largely preventable by following the following practices: Pass
urine when you feel the urge, don’t delay it. Drinking plenty of water (6-8) glasses helps to
cleanse the urinary tract and discourages overgrowth of the germs.
For ladies it is advisable to use showers rather than baths, especially if the facilities are
shared. Drinking a glass of cranberry juice a day has been recommended to prevent urinary
tract infection.
