NEWS RELEASE
FIRST SWISS ENERGY PANEL IN ZURICH
Zurich, Switzerland, 5 September 2011: The Advisory House, a leading management consultancy to the
European energy industry and the Swiss business magazine BILANZ together put up the first Energy
Panel in Zurich at the end of August. Tagged “Who generates – who pays?”, a panel discussion was held
in Zurich bringing together important representatives of the utility and finance industry.
Debate around questions and challenges concerning energy turnaround
On the podium, Giovanni Leonardi (CEO, Alpiq Holding), Suzanne Thoma (Member of the Corporate
Board, BKW FMB AG), Michael Barben (Head of Private Infrastructure, Partners Group AG), as well as
Michael Herrmann (Head Commodity Management, RWE AG) were led by Stefan Barmettler, Debuty
Chief Editor, BILANZ in their discussion around current challenges, future potentials and risks for the
utility business.
The trigger concerning an enormous change for the energy industry in Switzerland was the Federal
Council´s decision on 25 May 2011 regarding a nuclear power phase-out. Certainly, this will pose
tremendous challenges to the utilities in this country. The panel debated initial thoughts and
assessments with regard to implementing political guidelines. The discussion covered topics such as
nuclear power phase-out, achieving the set carbon goals, present and future possibilities of renewable
energies and energy efficiency measures. Upcoming massive investments into power plants and grid
infrastructure were questioned with regard to appropriate financing models (incl. institutional investors)
and policy stability.
Impressive interest
Following the panel discussion, the approximately 120 invited delegates from the utility industry
engaged in lively exchanges. “We are very pleased to have helped stage this event as a platform for the
industry,” explained Roland Dörig, Partner, The Advisory House AG. “Our industry is undergoing massive
changes and The Advisory House strongly believes in finding constructive solutions together.”
