CEO Perspective – Cheryl Wilson
The 50 th Anniversary LUV Gala is but a wonderful memory, and it exceeded any
previous events in both attendance and donations for which we are so grateful to
you all. St. Paul’s can do the good works we are called to because of community
people who walk with us in our mission to serve the seniors of San Diego.
In these uncertain times of Health Care Reform, reduced State and Federal
budgets for health care payments, and the continuing decline of our economy,
your support continues to lift us up and sustain us.
But we have much more to do. Many social changes lie ahead of us. A new
generation of seniors are starting to retire. They have a different set of expectations and needs as to what
it means to be independent at all stages of life. How Baby Boomers plan to pay for their retirement is
changing too. We no longer talk about pensions, but rather 401Ks.
As we move to close out our 50th Anniversary year we hope you will join us in our remaining events, and
keep us in your thoughts and prayers as we enter our next 50 years.
LUV Gala Celebrates 50 Years of Serving San Diego Seniors
St. Paul's held the annual LUV Gala on August 28 th at
the historic Hotel del Coronado as the major event of its
50 th Anniversary celebration. The evening drew a crowd
of more than 400 people who enjoyed a reception and
silent auction in the beautiful patio garden. More than
$112,000 was raised to benefit the new Memory Care
Program at St. Paul's Villa.
After the reception, guests moved into the Seaside
Ballroom for the dinner, program and dancing.
Honorees Marie Robinson, widow of Founder, Father
Harold Robinson, and Revs. Canon Andrew Rank
and Barnabas Hunt were honored for their respective
contributions to St. Paul's Senior Homes & Services. "It was a special night that allowed me to reconnect
with so many people in the San Diego community" said Marie Robinson. "It’s so nice to see how Harold’s
vision of caring for seniors has evolved over the last 50 years."
Donors sponsored seats for residents and volunteers this year. One recipient was first-time LUV Gala
attendee and volunteer, Harold Wachs. He knows first-hand how St. Paul’s helps seniors and children.
Harold’s wife, who passed away in 2009, was a member of the Senior Day program. It was during his
weekly visits to the program that he began volunteering to read books to children in St. Paul’s Childcare
program. He continues to volunteer weekly reading to the children who get very excited about his visits.
“I was fortunate to be one of the volunteers invited to attend the 50th Anniversary gala," said Harold.
"St. Paul’s will always have a special place in my heart since my wife, Mary, spent many comforting years
at the Senior Day program and the last years of her life at PACE. Spending the evening with the wonderful
people at the LUV Gala was much appreciated.”
The night had a somber note when CEO Cheryl Wilson announced the passing of long-time supporter,
Kaye Woltman. Many in the audience knew Kaye and were both saddened and inspired by Cheryl’s
testimony of Kaye’s support of St. Paul’s Senior Homes & Services through the years. In her honor,
$29,000 was raised to provide new chairs and tables in the Memory Care Program dining room and to
name the room in her honor.
Please visit the St. Paul’s website to view a number of delightful photos from the wonderful evening. The
2011 St. Paul’s LUV Gala is right around the corner! If you’d like to get involved with planning next year’s
extravaganza, please call Liam in the Foundation at (619) 239-6900.

Summer Happenings at St. Paul's
Ice Cream Socials at Manor and Villa
Thanks to Love Uniting Volunteers (LUV), St. Paul’s has
hosted Ice Cream Socials for over 10 years. This summer,
Morgan Stanley and Union Bank joined in the fun by
volunteering at these highly anticipated events. Ice Cream
Socials were held at both the Manor and Villa as volunteers
served cool treats to Residents who also enjoyed live music and
dancing. “I enjoyed every minute of this," said Villa Resident
John Ellis. "These kinds of events give us a nice break in life."
Mighty Hornets Graduation
Children from the Mighty Hornets class celebrated their
graduation from the St. Paul's Childcare Program in June. The
students moved on to Kindergarten and a new class of Mighty
Hornets started the school year in September. "It's one of the
best times of year at St. Paul's," said Master Teacher Grace
Scully. "What a proud moment to see children, some who
have been here since they were infants, take the next steps in
their lives."
Staff, Residents and Participants Pay Tribute
Staff, Residents and Intergenerational Participants gathered to
honor various American heroes during Memorial Day and 911
Remembrance events. "With so many veterans living in our
communities and participating in our programs, it's essential that
we remember their service and honor the sacrifice of those who gave
their lives in defense of our freedom," said Volunteer Coordinator
Stewart Gaddy. As speaker Mitch Mendler recounted, "it's also
important we never forget to honor the lives we lost in the terrorist
attacks."
McColl Room Renovations
The McColl Health Center recently completed a major room
renovation project. The 20 updated rooms feature brighter
colors on the walls and carpet to go with the new furniture
and beds that were donated within the last year. New flat
screen televisions were also installed on the walls and the
bathrooms received upgrades as well. "The rooms are bright
and feel peaceful," said McColl Resident Eleanor Santee. "It's a
comfortable place to live and relax."
McColl Earns Five Star Rating
Once a year the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services
release their new ratings for skilled nursing communities
nationwide. St. Paul's McColl Health Center received five stars,
the highest rating given. The five star rating is a testament to the quality, loving care provided by staff.
"We are extremely proud to be recognized as a five star community," said Administrator Alan Shigley.
"This confirms what we've always believed, which is that the care St. Paul's provides is second to none."
When Meals-on-Wheels, Greater San Diego, Inc. first
began delivering meals to needy seniors in 1960, it used
the kitchen at St. Paul's Manor to prepare the food.
Over the last 50 years, both organizations have served
thousands of San Diego seniors and continue to work
together to support the independence and well-being of
seniors.
While both nonprofit organizations each planned events
to celebrate their 50 th Anniversaries, the idea of a joint
community Street Fair came about. So, on June 26 th , the
Generations Together Street Fair was held on Third Avenue
between Maple and Nutmeg Streets as well as in the St.
Paul's Community Care Center parking lot.
The Street Fair featured a variety of food and
merchandise vendors selling items ranging from calzones
to necklaces. Attendees also enjoyed a wide offering of
entertainment - everything from magicians to a creole
band and stomp crew. The highlight of the event was a
dog costume contest that drew over 30 participants in
various categories. Meals-on-Wheels even chose the
winning dog to be the face of their new Waggin' Wheels
pet food program.
of St. Paul's and Meals-on-Wheels
50 th Anniversary Celebration Continues
St. Paul’s continues to celebrate its Golden Anniversary and has a few more events planned in the
final months of 2010. On October 19 th , we celebrated a Day of Prayer in conjunction with our annual
Clergy Appreciation Luncheon. In November, we will give thanks for the past 50 years through photos
taken throughout the organization's history. The celebration will wrap up in December when the
Intergenerational Program recreates holiday decorations from the 1960's, which will then be used to
decorate our communities.
Please don't forget to bring in your pennies for the penny drive we kicked off in January. The goal is
to collect one million pennies to represent the number of people in San Diego County in 1960. Half
of the proceeds will be donated to Meals-on-Wheels and half will go to our Employee Appreciation
Fund.
PACE Launches No Coat Left Behind Campaign
With Sadness Comes Joy
We all know a loving companion brings great joy to our
lives. Recently a lucky “Lady” found herself gifted to
PACE Participant Mr. Campbell, bringing with her
insurmountable joy.
Mr. Campbell was at the local library when his dog was
stolen. After police exhausted their search, Mr. Campbell
was left deeply depressed. “I didn’t know how I would get
through each day without him,” Campbell stated. Several
weeks later, a senior working with PACE Enrollment staff
had to give up his dog due to housing circumstances and
asked PACE to help him find a good home for his beloved
companion. Mr. Campbell came immediately to mind,
and within days “Lady” was introduced to her new owner.
Today, rather than discussing Mr. Campbell’s sadness, the
PACE team shares “Lady” stories and marvel and how
happy Mr. Campbell is.
St. Paul's PACE is conducting a drive to
encourage the community to donate warm
winter wear to its Participants. “Seniors need
gloves, scarves, coats, sweaters, anything that
will keep them warm this winter” encourages,
Executive Director Carol Hubbard. “We just feel
so sad when we pick Participants up on a cold
morning and they are not appropriately dressed
for the cooler weather. We know the community
will respond to our plea."
If you have any warm weather gear you would
like to donate, please bring it to the PACE Center
at 111 Elm Street, San Diego, CA 92101.
PACE Welcomes New Leadership
St. Paul’s is proud to announce that Carol Hubbard was
recently promoted to Executive Director of St. Paul's PACE.
Carol was Center Director of the PACE program for two
years and staff is thrilled to have her as Executive Director,
replacing Alan Allgood who moved back to Louisiana to
be closer to his family. PACE has also hired a new Center
Director, Kimberly Thorp. Kimberly is from Alaska where
she managed her own assisted living community.

St. Paul's Community Connection · Fall 2010 · 7
Volunteers from the TRACE Program, an outreach
of young adults with disabilities through the San
Diego Unified School District, assist in a variety of
projects at St. Paul’s Villa. In June 2010, a partnership
agreement was signed to continue their volunteer
support at St. Paul’s Villa, as well as extend their
services to our other communities.
The TRACE volunteers are a tremendous help to the
Villa's Dietary staff. They help bus tables and set up
the dining room for the Residents, as well as prepare
the menus. They’ve also given the garden patio area a
complete makeover by caring for the variety of plants. “Our patio looks beautiful due to the work of our
TRACE volunteers and the Residents really appreciate it,” said Villa Activities Coordinator Linda Elliott.
Not only does the Villa benefit from the partnership, but the TRACE volunteers get a lot out of their work
at the Villa as well. “When they’re assigned a job and they put on their name tags, they get a big boost
to their self esteem just by being involved” said Shirley Hesche, Education Specialist for the TRACE
Charitable Gift Annuity Recap
Did you know that you can earn a higher rate of return on your money by making a charitable gift
annuity? Right now, a typical Certificate of Deposit (CD) is paying 1% - 2% interest and a savings account
is paying even less. A charitable gift annuity is offering 7% for someone 79 years old!
On September 12 th , St. Paul’s Manor Residents gathered to hear a brief presentation about how a
charitable gift annuity is a compelling way to invest your money. In addition to a higher interest rate on
your investment, there are three other distinct advantages that charitable annuities offer:
1. Guaranteed income for life;
2. Tax deduction that can be spread out over several years; and
3. You help ensure the future of St. Paul’s Senior Homes & Service for years to come.
Please join us for our next Charitable Gift Annuity presentation on Sunday, January 23 rd at 4:30pm to
learn more about charitable gift annuities. You can RSVP to Liam Dunfey at (619) 239-6900. For more
information about charitable gift annuities or making a planned gift to St. Paul’s, please contact
Todd Kaprielian at (619) 239-6900.
LUV Update
LUV helped plan the historic LUV Gala which raised over $112,000 for the
St. Paul’s Villa Memory Care Program! We’re now gearing up for the holiday
season and the joy that it brings to our seniors.
LUV also hosted two Ice Cream Socials over the past few months, most
recently at St. Paul’s Villa. They are always a great way to connect with
St. Paul’s Residents and have fun volunteering.
Our annual Christmas lunch is on December 10 th at the Imperial House. In
December, we’ll also help stuff holiday gift bags for Residents and Participants in St. Paul’s programs,
which always warms our hearts. If you would like to join us for our December Luncheon, become a
member of LUV, are interested in donating an item(s) or money for the gift bags, or would like to help
with our events, please contact Joyce Frye at (619) 298-9011 or e-mail jfrye@cox.net.
Dr. Bill Creasy Presentation: Paul, From Sinner to Saint
Continuing our year-long celebration of St. Paul’s 50 th golden anniversary, we
invite you to a delightful evening with noted Bible teacher Dr. Bill Creasy as
he presents a talk on the life of the apostle, St. Paul.
Of all the personalities we meet in the Bible, Paul is among the most
interesting – and the most enigmatic. Learn how he moves from being the
great persecutor of the Church to being one of its greatest saints.
Dr. Creasy served on the English faculty at UCLA for more than 20 years and
taught Bible classes in California and Arizona for decades. Come see why the
San Diego Union-Tribune calls him “the Garrison Keillor” of Bible teachers.
is a tri-annual publication of St. Paul’s Senior Homes & Services,
a nonprofit corporation serving the Manor, Villa, John A. McColl
Family Health Center, Community Care Center, Retirement Homes
Foundation and St. Paul’s PACE.
On July 15 th , St. Paul's welcomed San Diego County Supervisor
Ron Roberts and other distinguished donors, guests, family
members and staff as they cut the ribbon and opened the new
secure Memory Care Program at St. Paul's Villa.
The Memory Care Program was created to meet an increasing
community need and provide caring support for seniors with
varying stages of Alzheimer's and dementia.
The Program consists of 64 private studio and one bedroom
apartments on the secure first floor of the Villa. A higher
staffing ratio on that floor allows staff to create a home-like
environment through a Resident-centered, individualized approach to care and living.
With proceeds from St. Paul's LUV Gala (see page two), more than $410,000 was raised through generous
donations, which allowed St. Paul's to make the adjustments needed to the building to allow the Program
to open quickly.
