I am writing this after dancing the night away at the St. Paul's Annual LUV Gala -
"All You Need is LUV!" On September 26th, supporters of St. Paul's came together
at the Omni Hotel dressed to celebrate the 60's, "LUV," the Beatles, our Seniors and
two very special people, Lois and Bill Kolender.
My personal thank you's go to the Gala Chairs, Patti Roscoe & Jim Tiffany and
the LUV Gala Committee. Your untiring efforts resulted in a fabulously successful
event that will enable us to further the mission of St. Paul's Senior Homes &
Services. To our Gala underwriters, sponsors, donors and guests - thank you. We
can serve because of you.

St. Paul's Celebrates the Summer...
The St. Paul's Childcare Program proudly saluted
the graduating Mighty Hornets Class (pictured at
right) who left to attend Kindergarten in the fall.
The annual event is always a favorite of parents
and staff as the children prepare to start the next
exciting chapter in their lives.

St. Paul's Manor held a variety of events during the warm summer months. From a farmer's market
(pictured below at left) with fresh produce and baked goods to the LUV Ice Cream Social (pictured below
in the middle) and a barbecue just for the men of the community (pictured below at right), something
seemed to be happening just about all the time.
McColl Health Care Center Residents put on their leis, drank
pina coladas and relaxed in an island state-of-mind during
their summer luau. The event featured Hawaiian music,
tropical food and drinks, bright island colors and a dance
performance by the Rhinestone Grannies (pictured at right).
"It was wonderful to have a taste of the islands brought to us,"
said Resident Helen Dick. "From the food and drinks to the
dancing, the event pleased all of our senses."
Villa Residents beat the summer heat by staying in
the cool air conditioning and participating in some
new programs offered in the community. They have
particularly enjoyed the new computer classes and
competition on the Nintendo Wii. They play everything
from bowling (pictured at left) to golf, all from the
comfort of the Villa Living Room. The friendly
competition has created new friendships and allowed
Residents to challenge themselves to improve every time
they play.

St. Paul's Hosts Senior Resource Fair
The senior services industry is expansive and covers a variety of information and services. St. Paul's is
contacted daily by companies that offer everything from memory testing to selling customized telephones
for seniors. To allow our Residents to have access to these companies without bombarding them with
presentation after presentation, St. Paul's decided to bring them all together at one time and host its first
ever Senior Resource Fair.
Held at the Villa in June, the Senior Resource Fair
featured speakers every 30 minutes on topics ranging
from heart health to fall prevention. More than 35
vendors filled the Waterman Ballroom and performed
health screenings, passed out a variety of information
pertinent to seniors and explained the products they
offer. There was also a blood drive by the American
Red Cross, an opportunity drawing featuring a host of
donated items and tours of the community.
"It was great having so many products and services
presented to us," said Manor Resident Eileen Jaffola. I
particularly enjoyed the speaker on memory testing. He
gave some helpful tips and very useful information."
Fun in the Sun
Remembering September 11th
On September 11 th , St. Paul’s staff took a moment (pictured at
right) to remember those who lost their lives in the 911 terrorist
attacks. Led by Volunteer Coordinator Stewart Gaddy, the
ceremony included an invocation from PACE Chaplain Cari
Furr, followed by Senior Day Participant Lillian Atwood
leading the singing of “God Bless America.”
St. Paul's employees spend a lot of time together providing
outstanding service and care to the seniors they serve. To
show appreciation and provide an opportunity for staff to get
together outside of work and meet each other's families,
St. Paul's held an employee picnic at Balboa Park. Employees
ate delicious barbecue prepared and served by volunteers from
the Marine Corps, played a variety of games (pictured at left),
relaxed and simply enjoyed each other's company. "It was great
to get together and see everyone in comfy clothes outside of
the office setting," said Manor Administrative Assistant Linda
Redenbaugh. "I think we all enjoyed the good food and some
time together to just relax."

All You Need is LUV
On September 26 th , St. Paul’s hosted its 26th
Annual LUV Gala at the Omni San Diego Hotel.
Many prominent San Diegans came out to support
the organization and honor former San Diego
County Sheriff, Bill and Mrs. Lois Kolender.
The theme for this year’s Gala was “All You Need
is LUV” in reference to the Beatles, 1960’s music
and Love Uniting Volunteers (LUV) the volunteer
auxiliary of St. Paul’s.
The guest list was filled with many prominent
people from throughout San Diego County.
Congressman Brian Bilbray, Assemblymember
Marty Block, Mayors Jerry Sanders, Mary
Sessom and Cheryl Cox, City Councilmember
Kevin Faulconer and many more attended.

Guests enjoyed silent and live auctions, a tribute
to the Kolenders, dinner and dancing to the local
band Rockola who played a variety of Beatles’
tunes and other hits from the 1960’s. Carol
LeBeau served as the Master of Ceremonies and
proceeds from the event benefitted the programs
and services of St. Paul’s.
"We wanted to take everyone back to the fun and
fabulous Sixties, raise much needed funds for
St. Paul's and honor Lois and Bill Kolender for
their years of community service," said Gala Chair
Patti Roscoe. "We've since received so many
enthusiastic emails, calls and letters about the
wonderful time everyone had, we know we hit the
mark."

Highschoolers Visit St. Paul's to Share Music
The Villa boasts a robust activities calendar that normally features live music several times a week.
However, Villa Residents received a special treat when visiting students from the Richfield Senior High
School Band (pictured below at left) performed as part of their tour of Southern California. The full
ensemble, including a brass section and drums filled the Waterman Ballroom with beautiful sounds.
Meanwhile, PACE Participants welcomed visiting students from Chosen Generation High School in
Fresno, California (pictured below at right) who entertained them with gospel songs. Led by Pastor Mike
Bohr, the students stopped by PACE as part of their week-long tour.
Sunset Party Celebrates Years of Contributions
On June 4th, St. Paul’s celebrated and thanked the women of the Young
& Restless/Team St. Paul’s subcommittee with a sunset party. Held
at the beautiful home of Dr. William and Barbara McColl, the ladies
were thanked for their years of volunteer service and commitment to
the mission of St. Paul's.

Manor Residents Have a New Fitness Routine for Their Mind
Technology can be a beautiful thing. Manor
Residents have recently added a unique fitness
program to their already full activities calendar.
While it can be both stimulating and exhilarating, it
is also done while sitting down.
As part of St. Paul's annual support campaign,
funding was raised to purchase a Dakim Brain
Fitness Station for the Manor. In the short time
since the station was installed, it has gotten quite
a workout as Residents often have it reserved for
individual sessions for most of the day.
Researchers are now starting to understand that
regular mental exercise helps maintain crucial
cognitive reserves that promote brain health. In
addition to physical exercise and good nutrition,
seniors can best maintain their cognitive abilities
by engaging in stimulating leisure activities such as
50 th Anniversary Celebration
Starting in January and continuing throughout
2010, St. Paul's Senior Homes & Services is
celebrating 50 years of service to the San Diego
community.
To honor and celebrate the "golden anniversary,"
St. Paul's is planning a special event for each month
in 2010. The signature event for the year will of
course be the annual LUV Gala, which is already
scheduled for August 28, 2010.
The list of events currently planned for the
upcoming year is shown to the right. Any ideas on
encouraging community involvement are welcome.
We are also looking for funding for some of the
events and all contributions will go towards the
year-long celebration.

To exercise areas of people's memory, the system
uses "era appropriate subjects" in games like
trying to remember the words to a song, names
of movie stars, types of cars, etc. It uses touch
screen navigation so the user does not need to use
a mouse. Because the exercises are fun and the
system is so easy to use, St. Paul’s raised enough
funds to purchase units for our other communities.

Love Uniting Volunteers (LUV),
St. Paul’s volunteer auxiliary for
over 20 years, had a fun summer
and early fall season and is now
gearing up for the holidays.
LUV hosted its annual Independence Day Ice
Cream Social at St. Paul’s Manor, which included
a live band and cool treats. We then focused on
preparations for the LUV Gala and everyone had a
great time raising money for the essential services
of St. Paul's.
Now, we're looking forward to the holiday season
and our annual Christmas lunch on December
11 th . We'll also be helping stuff the holiday gift
bags for Residents, which always warms our
hearts. If you would like to become a member
of LUV and help with our various events, please

Charitable Giving Can be More Than Just Giving Cash
Just a reminder that IRA owners age 70 ½ or older may gift up to $100,000 from their IRA or Roth IRA
to a qualified charity with no tax consequences through 2009. If this appeals to you, please contact
Foundation Director Todd Kaprielian and he will work with you and your custodian to transfer funds.
In order to qualify, Charitable IRA Rollover donors must direct their IRA custodian to transfer funds
directly to St. Paul's. Donor-advised funds and supporting organizations are not eligible.
Many donors have already made gifts using this new opportunity. Although there is no charitable income
tax deduction, the amount you transfer will not incur any income tax. It is simply a very convenient way
to make a gift. Additionally, if you are an IRA owner who does not itemize, this rollover will allow you to
reduce your taxable income and save on current taxes.
If you have a substantial amount in your IRA, this may be the best way to make a charitable gift this year
– especially if you are already giving to the 50% of adjusted gross income level, which is the maximum
permissible level for cash gifts each year. This new law now allows giving to 50% of adjusted gross income
from regular assets and “over and above” gifts from IRAs. Since the IRA gift is not included in taxable
income, it will have no impact on your regular income and other charitable gifts.
